WikiCup 2012 August newsletter

The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
  2. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
  3. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
  6. New York City Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
  7. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
  8. Canada Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: Russia GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), England Ealdgyth (submissions), England Calvin999 (submissions), Poland Piotrus (submissions), North Carolina Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), Cherokee Nation The Bushranger (submissions) and North Macedonia 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.

This brainstorming will go on for some time before more focused discussions/polls are opened. Hey there! I presume that it's still being developed, but I want to raise a few points: 1)the novel, of course, is the main work. I don't understand why the title leads to the film series. 2)The 1967 film is the film series. I saw someone's response to your request in WP:REFUND. To help clarify (quote from WP:NFCR):

Right now, I don't think either would qualify; the images are not difficult to envision from a text description (two men arguing; a row of bound and gagged hostages in a liquor store) so they would technically fail on NFCC#1. Again, if either of those dramatic scenes - or any other scene in the show - was critically commented on, that may be a better image (for example, as the article is written, they describe the shooting of two officers at the (apparent) end of the episode that was highlighted by critics. There may be smething there.)

After considering it, I believe we'll either have to make some monster-template for all topics related (which would be quite redundant, since most articles are rather insufficient) or just forgo the idea for a while. The coverage of the topic is very poor and probably does not merit a template. But OK, I suppose it can be expanded in the future. However, I will remove it from the history articles, where it is a bit out of place, and retain it only in those directly related to the novel. Cheers! bro, I think I could use a small quick solid over by the edit war notice board. got into a little kerfuffle over keeping it real w/ someone from Berrios' office, got stuck in a revert loop, my bad of course, of course - anyway if you could testify I'm not a monster or whatever else you see fit, thanks. one small part of my problem is out of towner editors reading a perfectly neutral well-sourced article on Joe Berrios and recoiling in horror - it MUST be blp violation! Tony, I strongly believe that article was BLP-problematic when I first flagged it. At the same time, I also believe it was 95% good and Hugh had done a lot of good work on it. HughD is trying to make a case for some of his proposed edits on the article talk page at Talk:Joseph Berrios‎; I think it would be helpful to get a neutral, 3rd-party, Chicago-savvy person such as yourself chipping in there. I want to avoid Hugh-and-Tony vs BLP-worrier factions, but some diplomacy on your part could go a long way towards taking Hugh's original massive effort to a really high -- and BLP-compliant -- level.

sry to bother. here's AB being diplomatic User_talk:Orlady#Paging_Orlady_-_stat.21 AB's fav blp clean-up specialist can't believe what she's reading, has limit access to online databases, and is rallying the troops to a project to roll back several years of hard labor on the Chicago project. Berrios is protected so she's engaging in massive section blanking and rs deleting on Edward_M._Burke to trap me into a revert loop which show everyone i am a problem child, meanwhile she declines repeated requests to get down to the hard work of specifics in talk space. She's tried several angles with various degrees of traction, too much detail, sources are tabloids, bias of editor (me), but has settled on leaning heavily not so much on blp as much as undue in particular. She seems convinced there must be rafts of pro-subject rs out there i am blowing past and her being unable to check is very frustrating for her, so she deletes neutral content and rs waving the blp flag, then apparently I am to prove a negative, that the favorable rs does not exist, or else i am being ask to find some pleasant rs to offset what she perceives as un, and until i can do so best say nothing at all. I'm trying to help her thru a thorough understanding of the full implications of the critical role of rs in weight disputes and how good access to quality rs is something of a pre-req to undue claims, but she seems to be clinging to a notion of balance as 50/50 nice/not so nice. I'm relatively unfamiliar with navigating the politics on wp. I'd like to get back to work in content space Hugh (talk) 13:38, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
out-of-state: Berrios's race for assessor was covered by the NYT, the Burkes' custody battle was covered nationally & internationally; at issue is hard to say since i have been largely unsuccessful in trying to focus our attention on specifics. i will learn more about the specific Berrios issues once the prot expires. the Burke editor has tried justifying section blanking and rs deletion with "sources are not rs", "editor is biased", "article is non-neutral", but the very most recent tack is a geeeral reference to tone. thanks i think getting down to specifics is exactly what is needed. I know you fought hard for the Toni P & Sandy J articles, as you know they were a huge early influence on my contributions and they rely heavily on the Trib, s/t, and Chicago mag. Fairy tale templates

Tony, I don't have time at the moment to go into this, but the Perrault templates you're adding aren't really accurate. Almost all of Perrault's tales existed before he wrote them - they weren't original. If we have to have all those templates on each page, then it would be better to simply refer to the name of the tale and not the author. I can explain much more later when I'm off wiki-break if you're interested. Also some if it is explained in Histoires ou contes du temps passé - but that page isn't yet finished. Still a lot to be added in regards to the fact that the tales were adaptions and about the origins. These templates are simply erroneous and contain stuff that has nothing to do with Perrault. Hi, thanks for changing these. One more thing: for {{Little Red Riding Hood}} we need to verify the information about The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck. It's probably correct but almost certainly placed there by a ItsLassieTime sock and I try to scrub material from that user/s (or verify it) whenever I come across it. WP:TFL reboot

Hello TonyTheTiger. I just wanted to thank you for selecting submissions for TFL. Recently, at WT:TFL, there's been a lot of concern that the system has become stuck, that new nominations are being discouraged by the lengthy queues in place, and that my selections for TFL haven't been diverse enough. To that end, I've rebooted the system. In short, we will no longer have a submissions and prep page, just a submissions page. We'll limit the number of submissions to ten. The community can comment on, support, oppose etc the inclusion of any of the submissions. Directors will have final say on what goes on main page when. I've deleted all selections made from mid-October to Christmas to give others the opportunity to get involved. I'm sorry that so much of your efforts now have been, well, delayed I guess, and hope that you'll continue to support our process, as we try to improve and ultimately get more main page exposure. Ambassador Inquiry

Hello Tony the Tiger. I'm the instructor for a section of students at Ball State University in Indiana USA who are beginning a collaborative research project on Wikipedia for our Introduction to Digital Literacies class. I've been teaching with WP since Spring 2011; from my user page you can see a few example projects highlighted. We are currently in need of an online ambassador to advise five class groups on selecting topics and putting articles together: this means there will be five topics for an ambassador to assist with. Might you be interested in helping us? You can see the project timeline in my user area project subpage.

I have gone through the appropriate channels and application documents with the Wikimedia folks in charge of education programs, but have not heard back in nearly two weeks (I've emailed Jamie Mathewson twice).
