Proposed deletion of All Comers Track Meets

Hey Boss, why did you change the information Dave Grohl and high school? You don't know what you are talking about, ok? I went to high school with him and used to drive him home after school. Can you say the same? He attend Ireton as a freshmen -- I have the yearbook here in front of me to prove it. The wikipedia article is now wrong thanks to you. I'm tired of changing it.

Cleanup

I noticed you or your bot redirected categorization of an article I initiated. It moved Lloyd (Bud) Winter from "Category:Track and field athletics coaches" to "Category:American track and field coaches" which was, I guess, appropriate since the previous category only has other categories now (someone has altered it, perhaps your bot). The problem is, now in its new category, Winter is now not listed alphabetically by his last name W, but by his first L. Since this is an automatically generated page, there is no way to correct it. It appears to be the only such case on the page, but should be corrected by someone with that power, perhaps by you since you caused the change to that category in the first place. World record videos

The simplest and most straight forward idea would be to add an extra column on the record list (after "ref") and use a [bare] external link. A video icon might be nice, but then again it stops being so obvious that the link connects to something outside of wikipedia. Clearly, we won't ever have Wikipedia-friendly videos for this topic!

There seems to be a general dislike of external links mid-list, but I believe these types of video links would make a valuable exception. Indeed, without pictures or videos this is quite a dull, unattractive statistical list. I must say, however, that you should be keen to avoid linking to content of dubious legality. Also, just looking on your talk page you seem to have been knocked about quite a bit regarding various Wiki rules. I'm glad you've decided to keep editing (you've done a good job on United States Olympic Trials (track and field); an article I pointed out as missing!). In reference to your above "promotional" reprimand – I was also looking to create an article on Mondo at some point. The best defence tends to be good referencing.
If you do wish to make an article for Mondo (perhaps better named as Mondo (flooring)?) then you must choose your sources wisely – many editors are highly suspicious at even a whiff of a promotional tone, and rightly so. Look for articles in generally trustworthy and non-promotional publications. With Mondo, there are articles about their tracks from Slate, European Athletics, The Review and Speedendurance. A short article focused on their involvement with the Olympics (and track and field in general) is far more likely to stick than one which focuses on the qualities of their track surfaces.
Some editors are very keen to delete articles which are a bit unfocused and messy – even though Wikipedia:Articles for deletion claims that topics must be judged on notability alone, it has been proven time and time again that diligent referencing, solid writing and a neutral tone can make a largely unimportant article subject to less scrutiny than altogether more important subjects! What "ramifications?" Nothing here is ever lost. Mistakes can be made and thankfully can be reversed. Lots of new users ask why I deleted an article and I always respond in kind. Since I do a lot of new page patrolling, it's only natural that my talk page would have a history of inquiries into deletions. If I delete an article in error, I admit the mistake, restore the content and move on. Please explain in Colbert article Talk

Where, explicitly there is a citation giving the information that Colbert's tenure as host has ended. We know it is so, it simply has to be sourced. I also ask that the since the sentence regarding his hosting was made past tense, it also contain the dates he hosted: "was host from x to y", because to a casual, interested reader, the past tense begs the question "when". I am a fellow editor entitled to AGF, and would ask the tags not be removed before the issue is addressed (either in Talk, if I am missing the citation in the main body, or until the citation and date range is added to the text. I definitely agree with you that there are wider behavior problems, but I'm hoping we can just take small bites at a time right now to keep things very pointed in the process at ANI. Otherwise, I fear we'd risk derailing the discussion when new/old drama gets kicked up. I have a lot of confidence ROPE will see justice work here. My primary concern is the utter lack of interest on the part of the administrators. This ANI is about to fall off the main board and onto the archives, destined to be forgotten as so many are. Just letting it slide does not work here. Combine progressions

What do you think of this (incomplete at the moment): Masters_women_high_jump_world_record_progression It would make things easier to maintain, more information on one page, only one link per discipline. Weia (talk) 19:26, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

It might be easier to maintain. When I built the original pages per age group, it was easier for both me and I think the reader to stay with focused information. You are not the first to make such a suggestion, others with far less knowledge about the sport pushed the same thing. I argued against it, feeling it diminishes each age group achievement when lumped together onto a multiple page as you have constructed. But hey, I'm just one person, one vote. We go with the flow here. If you think it makes the presentation better, go ahead. Make it better. I also avoided red linked people unless I had plans and information to write an article about them. I think I have found most former Olympians and open world class people, but I don't know the rest of the players, particularly your expertise with European athletes. If you have the information about them and can write articles, or provide me information, we can always make it better by telling more of the story. By the way, one athlete I suspect you might know some information about, Weia Reinboud, might be a good place to start. Maybe it wouldn't be appropriate for you to write about her, but I can if I had "sources" to work with, I can. Point me in the right direction. Trackinfo (talk) 20:11, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
For a reader it is nice to see the same masters athlete in several age classes. For maintaining: I made several mistakes in updating the main page with too much or two few cells, throwing away the progression link and several other mistakes like the number of row spans. Redondo Loves Wikipedia (2/14), Wik-Ed Women (2/17), and Unforgetting LA at the Getty (2/21)!

The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending!

First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach!

Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists.

Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page).

I appreciate your extensive comment at Inquiry 2, but I do urge you to stick to the specifics of each inquiry. We will get to other issues as required, but often the application of Wikipedia policies and guidelines will help curtail excesses, which when curtailed can lead to a less POV article. Dealing with DRN personal statements

Trackinfo, I really appreciate your interest in the General Motors Streetcar Conspiracy article and support with the related DRN discussion. However, can I urge you to adapt your response to negative personal comments directed at you on the DRN board. For sure, do respond, but I suggest you take the same approach as I am doing now by simply responding along these lines: 'We are here to discuss the subject, not individual contributors or the contributions. Please remove the above reference to myself and refrain from making similar statements in future." What does not help is when we 'take the bait' and respond to the personal allegations made, which actually puts us in breach of the rules as well and probably encourages further similar comments. Athletics notability

I was wondering what would you think about changing the position on the IAAF toplist required to satisfy notability for national champions to an easier bar to meet than 60. I think 120 makes sense as that is about equal to how many athletes on average meet the WC/OLYMPICS B standard in a given year. Are there any national champions who were ranked top 120 in the world that would not satisfy WP:GNG (note that print sources do count for satisfying WP:GNG - if anyone states they don't count in an AFD they are wrong. A link to a facebook page that provides evidence that a prominent non routine print article on the subject exists, should suffice at AFD to keep the article. Also can you direct me to a link of the AFDs you are referring to, I'd love to take a look at them). Resurrection of Southern California Task Force

After moving from Los Angeles County to Kern County to San Luis Obispo County, I am finally realizing that there is life in California outside of L.A. and San Francisco, where I lived and grew up. Oh, I have also lived in San Diego, San Bernardino, San Joaquin, Yolo and Sacramento counties, and I earned my undergraduate degree in Riverside County. I am trying to breathe life into the Southern California Task Force, and I hope you will join me. 2003 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

This meet came before my interest in the sport, but after several hours work, just wow: talk about a national disgrace. It took me quite a long time to collate all the ins and outs of who-should-have-finish-where. How depressing! SFB 22:35, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for all your hard work on all those USA Outdoor Championships. All part of that huge backlog. We've got the History of the Olympic Trials, my favorite source, to someday translate into wiki. I just found the NCAA historical results like here which contain lots of history. I'm looking to see what OCR might be able to do for that mess. Since USATF has dropped the ball, for historical USA Outdoor (and indoor results--I don't work too hard on indoors usually) we will probably have to go into old newspaper agate. Great find. The Olympic Trials book certainly is a fine piece of work. It's something to aspire to. Good statistical analysis like that always inspires me to write more – the Ibero-American Championships in Athletics had a similarly good treatment. That said, the bonus with newspaper coverage though is that you get a better feel of expectations, the concerns of the time, and what the big stories were – things that can be easily lost with plain statistics.
I've always focused on international competitions, but I think that coverage is pretty good now so some of our most glaring gaps come at national and NCAA level. Seeing the French Wikipedia editors get ahead of us on the USA champs was certainly an incentive to some friendly competition I've had an ongoing aim to get full coverage of major events of this century, so I'll probably pause at the 2000 USA Championships. The Olympic record lists like the one I did for the 100 m are still on my mental to-do list! SFB 22:09, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your recent edit on Carl Lewis, which I'm trying to get passed to WP:GA. {{template:T&Fcalc2}} seems broken. It resolves {{T&Fcalc2|28}} to 28 ft 0 in (8.53 m). @Sillyfolkboy: This was the work of SFB. I have seen a few complaints about the precision but I'm so appreciative of his hard work to get these templates to exist that I'm reluctant to complain. 1 1/4" is a huge error. I saw this on my wathclist. Pings must be signed in the same edit so [2] doesn't work. The second parameter in {{T&Fcalc2}} is currently mandatory and is set to 1.34 if it's omitted, probably for test purposes. {{T&Fcalc2|28|0}}} gives 28 ft 0 in (8.53 m). @PrimeHunter and FunkyCanute: That figure was indeed for test purposes. I've removed it now so omitting inches means zero inches (logical!). The discrepancy with the little gold book is frustrating. Some have proved to have been rounded up instead of down, so I'm tempted to allow the discrepancy in those cases. That said, I think there is a difference in with display of longer distances where American standard, namely the distances are reduced to whole inches (search "hammer throw" for result conversions here). I think the template I made still does fractions at that point. Potentially some code tweaks could improve this further, but I'm unsure of what a reasonable cut-off for showing fractions would be. @Sillyfolkboy: The cut off would be about 76 feet, or a reasonable distance beyond the current world record in the shot put barring a Beamonesque improvement. That is the longest distance to use fractions of an inch and would be well below any discus mark we would bother to report here (Masters or youth results possibly excepted). That was exactly the point. Make positive contributions. Leaving complaining tags about an article being incomplete, two minutes after the article was started is unreasonable and unhelpful. Its actually an interruption, a block on the subsequent edit. In my comment I gave two very specific changes to this behavior that can be taken. 1) If you see a problem, fix it rather than complain about it. 2) Give new articles time to mature. 2 minutes is not reasonable. I don't disagree, but there's a correct and incorrect way to approach an editor with those suggestions. Calling someone a "complainer" and "lazy" is an easy way to ensure the editor doesn't listen to a word you say. LHSAA districts

Sorry, but Wikipedia does not expect to have articles about every organization that exists. The test for inclusion is called Wikipedia:Notability and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Youtube, Facebook, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones and anything based on press releases. The test is, have people not connected with the subject thought it significant enough to write substantial comment about? See also WP:Notability (summary).

Perhaps the article Louisiana High School Athletic Association could be expanded to include mention of these districts, or possibly the 5A Division may have attracted enough independent comment to be notable in Wikipedia's sense, but these individual districts do not need stand-alone articles. You have made a considerable effort to look at the Patagonia related articles. That had to take some time. It took me 5 seconds to find that source. It took you longer to make the edits to remove that content. If you (one small person) are going to make such a removal of content from the database the entire world can access, try to do it with a little knowledge to back you. In this specific case, that claim had been posted for about 6 years. No other editor chose to remove it in that time. Also no other editor chose to include a source. You could have looked before you leaped. Now that I have pointed you to the sources, you are diligently reading them and correcting the articles. That is what the process of editing is all about. Hi Trackinfo! I see you've added the pre-IAAF progression to the Women's vault record progression page. Since you added the info, I thought you'd like to amend the page as per the progression found in the IAAF list (page 324) - there are many additional records there, and the source is RS - which the blog you linked to isn't - as per wikipedia guidelines. There are a lot of records which weren't on that page you sourced to, something like TWELVE (!) set by Mildred Carl on one day in 1915, for example... And, I'll make the point I did on the high jump page - metric should be the main height followed by imperial, rather than the measurement used at the time of the marks. Maybe the link that reveals now is different from the exact one I read before. This site, by Becca Gillespie has repeatedly proven to be a valuable source of information. The list I quoted from was attributed to Roger Ruth, another expert in the field, though I cannot find the original list this quoted from. That said, it is an independent list of the IAAF. If IAAF kept a pre-ratification list, great. Here on wikipedia, we are subject to review and other people can find other sources, as you did. Point being, there was nothing at all posted on this subject before yesterday, now we have a structure to work with and improve upon. Eventually we will get a better list. I actually found this information while searching for another non-existent article Women's indoor pole vault world record progression that I have been researching. When I get time to post that, the source of the information I have is directly from the IAAF, but it is in such a convoluted form that I have had to reckon from their information rather than copy and paste an existing formal list. Maybe that information is contained in the document you linked to. If so, It might save me a lot of time and effort. Help on anything on wikipedia is always welcome. Hi Trackinfo. I, like you, want to keep the criteria for masters athletics as they were previously, if not wider. Actually, you were the first to remove that comment [4] before they re-inserted and retracted it. I stuck my nose into this to find a source to back up the original claim. We have one IP screaming that his source is superior to all others, now we have another IP screaming you can't trust all these sources. I don't know this subject well enough to express an opinion of my own, I searched and went with what a source said.[5] That's what I do when I see content being removed. I thought the source was informed on the subject and reliable. We have a discussion brewing and I don't know what the outcome will be or where it will take us. We have inexperienced IPs who do not know WP rules, but we as experienced, registered users shouldn't break the rules. So I'm going to stand back and watch to make sure this is a fair fight. AthAbbr needed

Hi Trackinfo, I created the {{AthAbbr needed}} template so that any pages that need converting can be tagged and followed up on, as there are thousands which were either created before or without the template. I'm sure you know the benefits of using AthAbbr as opposed to bare text. I was wondering (still being relatively new) where the best place to publicise the template would be so that it can be in use and allows me to begin clearing the backlog? I have posted on the WikiProject athletics talk page and on the proposals page, but ideally I would have lots of people aware of this tag and when to use it, so that I (and hopefully others) will work to make sure that pages get the AthAbbr template. Something is screwed up in that there are 9 teams listed. I wasn't counting specifically when I made the edit, but there were enough <br> slots apparently for 9. I based the entry on the 2016 list:

  • 3 38.21 PR of China (Germany already qualified)
  • 4 38.31 A Turkey (France already qualified)

Thanks for the info, normally South American tournaments only have the 10 main countries - in rare occasions they don't leave out Suriname and the Guyanas. And apparently Panama is on the South American Games too (along with Aruba and the Antilles). I'm just fine tuning the accolades for Braz. While I certainly admire Maurer for sticking it out and continuing to improve at 35, there is just too much competition on the women's side. Greetings. I've just removed all but two necessary references to Ms. Bartoletta's maiden name from her bio article. It's not the custom in any book, article, publication, etc, etc that I'm familiar with to refer to a woman's maiden name according to the time of events in her life, except as "then Jackson" for instance. You seem to have a problem with this article. You left a tag which, as I explain on my user page, effectively vandalizes the article. But you didn't have the courtesy to take your complaint to the talk page. So we have no idea what specifically you are complaining about. While I created it, there have been other editors. There was turmoil during the hours he won the silver medal, had it taken away and reinstated. The page required page protection during that period. You know this, you were involved. The last paragraph still needs some work. Still thats not enough of a problem, and a temporary problem at that, for you to leave a tag that you should be well aware most editors do not know what to do with and are at least fearful of removing. If you have a complaint, at least explain it. Preferably, make the complaint in the talk page and not on the main article where the entire world sees it, discrediting the article and wikipedia. No. Sorry, but from our previous dispute, I observed how you regularly delete and archive the numerous complaints against you as a technique (deliberately or possibly just my perception) to hide the cumulative mass. In the spirit of openness, I place my full record of interacting with other wikipedians, the good and the bad, on full public view. It's not entirely clear because WP:NTRACK number 8 says top 12 in the world in a calendar year in an event contested at IAAF world championships or Olympics, but not specifically IAAF world indoor championships. In USA, low hurdles 30" (76.2 cm) have been the standard for women's events, so there is no distinction. American high schools switched heights for men in the mid-1980's so the low hurdle marks do not conform with proper hurdle specifications.Trackinfo (talk) 17:57, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

Pro-life

On Cenk Uygar's bio page, I changed "pro-life" to "so-called pro-life." It was reverted with the comment that "we don't editorialize." However, "pro-life" is editorializing from an anti-abortion perspective. "So-called" indicates that that usage is not neutral. Whenever "pro-life" is used in Wikipedia, it should be made clear that it is not a neutral usage. Michtom (talk) 22:36, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

By inserting "so called" you are inserting an opinion into the statement, which is improper. It is clear you disagree with the terminology. I'm sure both sides disagree on the semantics of the terms the opposition uses. "Pro Life" and "Pro Choice" are the commonly understood terms for the two sides. Note that both terms work as wiki links. Wikipedia uses the terms that are reported, that the general public would understand, without expressing any derision toward one side's term or the other's.
