selamlar[edit]

Kolay gelsin--Ugur Basak 21:26, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Good day - Iyi günler - Konnichi wa
Sorry but I really havent mastered any language but english well enough to carry out a discussion with.
Category:Kurdistan was created recently on 1 Dec 2005 based on the history added by User:Diyako. The best way to get rid of that category is put it up for deletion arguing about inaproporatenes. Given it is a contraversial subject you really need to build a strong case. I am sorry but it is in your best interest if I do not get directly involved reasons being quite complicated. I simply do not want to risk further harrasment.
Anime is nice. I'd reccomend the ones listed on my userpage although there are perhaps thousands of different serries out there.
What do you think of the Turkish on my userpage, Mind if I ask if you can check for spelling and gramatical errors? :)
Do you guys in Tr.wiki suffering from vandalsim? If so you are welcome to use my bot in combating them. I can set it up if you guys are interested. You can observe its performence on irc.freenode.net in channel #wikipedia-en-vandalism
--Cool CatTalk|@ 22:06, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cool cat, i get it:) Naruto and Full Metal is my favorites. We can talk later about that bot. I guess you are from Cyprus. I edit some minor things on your page, later i will edit again. There is not so much vandalism, as you can see its still growing. We must stay in contact. Görüşürüz--Ugur Basak 22:30, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Never been to Cyprus. Although I hope to sometime. :) --Cool CatTalk|@ 22:52, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for fixing my userpage :) --Cool CatTalk|@ 22:58, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do some edits in a few days in your user pages Türkçe part. Anyway its nice to find you. An anime fan, also C programmer etc. etc. So you must born in USA. From which province do your parents come from. My home province Karabük, Safranbolu. Bye

I did some more edits to your page:)Bye for now--Ugur Basak 23:06, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I keep personal info a matter of out most confidentiality. Please dont take it personal, its just my personal policy :)
Actualy (if you dont mind my asking) can you translate everything in the Turkish section? I'll restructure the page a bit to make it easier. Also feel free to rewrite the section so it looks "better" making it mean more like the english section :) --Cool CatTalk|@ 23:28, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Food in Turkey[edit]

Selem Uğur Başak... Türkiyede türist 1980'da idim, Ístanbuldan Vana seyahat ettim. Çok az Türkçe biliyorum, fakat dil ilime (linguistics) merak edim. That's about it for Turkish -- did it make any sense? Anyway, I am trying to get together people from different parts of the world (starting with the Eastern Mediterranean) to learn more about foods and food traditions. Does that interest you? Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

I know that the Turks, the Armenians, the Greeks, and many others have a food (a sweet bread with eggs in the dough, like brioche) called çorek / tsoureki / choreg. In Greece, it is traditional to braid the dough; and it is eaten on Easter, but in Armenian stores I see they often have it as buns. What I am curious about is whether çorek is eaten in Turkey (for example in Safranbolu), and what associations it has. Is it traditional for some festivals? Is it considered a "Christian" food? Do people bake it at home, or only buy it from special bakeries? That kind of thing.

Of course, you may not be interested at all in food traditions... --Macrakis 18:56, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Selam Macrakis. Your knowledge on Turkish is good enough for me to understand:) About çörek, there is no association for it. At least it is not traditional in large festivals, but may be in local festivals. No it's not considered as Christian food, but it is not considered as Muslim food too. People generally prefer to bake it home, but there are lots of places for people to buy.
Do you have any historical roots on Turkey (especially Safranbolu). I hope i could answer your questions. Whenever you want to ask, at least i can try to answer.--Ugur Basak 20:13, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Ugur. I started writing you a long reply, then my computer crashed!!! Anyway, here's the summary. My family is Greek. My father's mother was from Smyrna (now İzmir) and left in 1922. Despite that, I have no bad feelings about Turks, though I find some of the Turkish government's policies very bad. I very much enjoyed travelling in Turkey by car in 1977 and 1983. In 1977, my itinerary was roughly: Edirne, İstanbul, Bursa, Kütahya, Afyon, Akşehir, Konya, Nevşehir, Kayseri, Malatya, Elâziğ, Bitlis, Van. The return trip was faster, because I had to get home! I took the northern route: Ağri, Erzurum, Erzincan, Sivas, Ankara, İstanbul. On my 1983 trip, I visited the coast from İzmir to Antalya, then in to Konya and back through Pamukkale, Efes, and Kuşadası. The Black Sea coast I am saving for a future visit! So, no, I have no connection to Safranbolu....

Tsoureki (çörek) in Greece was originally reserved for Easter, but now people eat it year-round. There is a very similar Jewish bread called challah, which is associated with the Sabbath, so I wonder if there is a connection. Here in Boston, Massachusetts, there is a neighborhood with many Armenian grocery-stores which sell çörek, lahmejun (pronounced laamecın, and similar to 'etli pide'), and other good things. Do you ever call 'etli pide' something like lahmejun? My guess is that this word comes from lahm-e-jun, where lahm is Arabic for 'meat', 'e' is a Persian izâfe (like Erzurum = erz-e-Rum = land-of-Rum), and jun, I don't know.

I'm also curious about the history of döner kebab in Turkey. You are young, so I am guessing that you've known it all your life in pide-sandviç with sauce (and what do you call the sauce?). But I would be curious to know if older people always had it that way, or if it was only served on a plate. Well, that's all for now. Are you curious about anything in Boston, in the US, or in Greece? --Macrakis 05:16, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cool Cat, i'm not so active for these days on en.wiki. Mostly spending my time for daily life and tr.wiki. I've seen xmas messages, Merry Christmas to you. Görüşmek üzere--Ugur Basak 20:01, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I know christmas isn't celebrated in Turkey though, I know you guys celebrate the New Year thing. Hence best wishes anyways. --Cool CatTalk|@ 20:06, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
That's POV sentence:)(just joke) In Turkey it's not celebrated among the muslims. But christians celebrate it, there are also some French, Austrian etc. schools, at least they make holiday in Christmas days. We celebrate New year on December 31, i dont celebrate it either:) don't like celebrations.--Ugur Basak 20:18, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ugur Basak,

I want to work on this article and get it upto the standard it deserves. But I want it to be collaborative effort, one, because I would not know too much about the club history and other details, and secondly, because, well, its always more fun to work as a team! You seem to have worked on the article before, so would you like to join in? -Aabha (talk) 13:40, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!
Its alright about contributing, thanks a lot for responding though. Yeah, User:Zbzdhbafr and User:CanbekEsen did some really good work on it, so we're progressing well. I'll definitely get back to you if we need some specific information. Maybe if the corresponding article on tr-wiki has something that the article here doesn't we could get someone to translate it. Do you think that is possible? -Aabha (talk) 19:27, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the translation. So, do you think what is there in the article now is complete enough? I mean, if somebody who doesn't have any idea about the club reads it, do you think the information is ample? By the way, that image on the Turkish article with the team from old looks quite good. we could use it here if you could help with the licensing and summary. -Aabha (talk) 20:20, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, sorry couldn't reply earlier, my internet connection was giving some trouble. Anyways, well, if you do manage to locate any details about the picture sometime, do let me know. Thanks a lot for all your help! -Aabha (talk) 18:00, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Turkish name[edit]

Hi. I noticed that you speak Turkish. Can you please add a Turkish name for this old Ottoman province into this article: Elayet of Temesvar. If you do not know this name, can you tell me who of the Wikipedia users might know? Thank you. PANONIAN (talk) 00:11, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

pop-up and problem on some characters[edit]

Hi Interiot, your editcount is really very useful. I want to report you a minor bug. For example in this in edits by namespace part Şablon or Kullanıcı can be seen correctly but on popup window, they are not ok. It must be about charsets.--Ugur Basak 12:37, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a known problem that I'm trying to solve. For some reason, in one setting I get Grön's bug, but if I fix it, then I get your bug. I'll have it fixed soon though. --Interiot 18:34, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, it should be fixed now. By the way, is "(main)" appropriate? There's no translation for the mainspace, of course, since it's a blank string. So most likely it has to be English? If so, is there a simpler word that would be better? --Interiot 22:22, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Interiot, you are doing really great job. I've checked it and see it's fixed, also you add a new feature, graph. In Turkish Wikipedia, we use the (ana) for (main). Whenever you want to change it you can change it to (ana). Thanks--Ugur Basak 22:44, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The issue is that I don't want to go to the trouble of translating it into all 216 languages (the other namespaces are already translated, and available via automatic means), so I wanted to pick something that would work for most people without having to do language-specific changes. Which probably means something in Basic English, unless some other creative solution can be arrived at. --Interiot 22:53, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So (main) can be the most proper word for it. Most of the peoples, who use your tool, are active on en:wiki. --Ugur Basak 22:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the other people should use it too, of course. :) --Interiot 05:47, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maintenance of AID[edit]

Hi there,

I see you have been updating votes on AID nominations. Maybe you will be interested in my proposal to coordinate such maintenance work on AID: Wikipedia:Article_Improvement_Drive/Maintenance. --Dijxtra 12:30, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes i've been updating since Ottoman Empire nominated. It can be a good idea. What is the difference of Checked the nominations subsection and Rollover--Ugur Basak 15:15, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Checked the nominations subsection is the thing you do now and then. Rollover is done once a week, on Sunday. That's when current AID article is elected, and everybody who voted for the article which was elected has to be informed about it. --Dijxtra 23:04, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I understand.--Ugur Basak 10:45, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RFA[edit]

Hi Ugur Basak/Archive1, thanks for participating in my RfA discussion. Unfortunately, my fellow Wikipedians have decided at this time that I am not suitable to take on this additional responsibility, as the RfA failed with a result of 66/27/5 (71.0% support). If you voted in support of my request, thank you! If you decided to oppose me at this time, then I hope that if I do choose to reapply in the future, the effort I will make in the meantime to improve and expand my contributions to Wikipedia may persuade you to reconsider your position. All the best, Proto t c 10:40, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

71.0% support is not so bad. May be you can reapply in 1-2 months time. Good luck--Ugur Basak 21:53, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA Thanks![edit]

Okay, this is perhaps a bit overdue, but thank-you for your support in my recent RfA! I passed with a final vote count consensus of (82/1/0), which was a lot of support that I really appreciate. I'll try to live up to the expectations; and on that note, if there's ever something I do wrong (or don't do right), please spit in my general direction. Cheers! --PeruvianLlama(spit) 05:31, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DNA haritaları ve etnik --TuzsuzDeliBekir 22:43, 4 February 2006 (UTC)kimlikler[edit]

Merhaba,

Birkaç kullanıcı etnik kimlik sayflarına zorla Dna haritaları koyarak, etnik kimlikleri tekrardan yazmaya çalışıyor. Hiç kimsenin saf kan olmadıgı günümüzde bu tip tavırlar cok saçma olmalı.

Etnik kimlik, kişinin kendisini nasıl tanımladıgına baglı oldugunu düşünüyorum. Örnegin, hiç kimse annemin ve babamın üyesi oldugu etnik grubun dna larının %... bilmem kaçı şurdan, bilmem kaçı burdan geliyor diyerek kendisini tanımlamıyor. Ben Türküm veya İngilizim diyor.

Sizin fikrinizi almak istedim, sizce haklımıyım haksızmıyım ?

Muhabbetle, --TuzsuzDeliBekir 11:06, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mesela Turkish People sayfasında gördüğüm bir araştırmayı okudum. Birkaç yerde daha geçiyor. Aklımda kaldıgı için yazıyorum linki. Araştırmada, bilim insanları Türkiyeden aldıkları 4 farklı denek üzerinde yapmılar deneyi. Deneklerden birisi Adanalı. Bende Adana da yaşıyorum. Adana da büyük cogunluk göçmendir. Kimisi Selanik, kimisi Bulgaristan, kimisi Suriye, kimisi Çerkezya ....

Merhaba[edit]

Merhaba, rica etsem burada benim resmime oy verirmisin 2? iyi günler... -Inanna-

Maalesef khoikhoi benim resmimi sildi.
-Inanna-

Şu an hala oy kullanabilirsin.Sadece iki resimden biri seçilecek(şu an)

My RFA[edit]

My admin request went up in flames. (But thanks anyways!)

Hey, Ugur Basak, I wanted to thank you for your support of my (unfortunately unsuccessful) request for adminship. The final tally was 37/16/5, which fell short of the needed 75-80% for "consensus". I don't know if or when I'll go up for nomination again, but even if I don't, I will try not to betray the trust that you and 36 others were willing to place in me. Thanks for taking the time to vote in my RfA, which passed with a final vote of 54/2/1 despite my obvious inadequacy for the job. I'll do my level best to use the mop and bucket — or, as I said in my RfA, plunger — responsibly. Of course, in the best tradition of politicans everywhere, I've already broken a campaign promise (I blocked a vandal last night despite having said "I don't anticipate using the blocking tool very often"). Help request[edit]

Hello, I've seen you've just marked a few orphan talkpages for speedy deletes that I had missed, thanks :) You've also reverted the same person as I have that's been inserting links to the same web site (e.g. in Çankırı Province) so I was hoping you might do me a favour and give me an idea of what the website it points to is about, as I don't know the language. It was suggested to me that if the user continues to insert the links (and it appears that every edit they make inserts it) that I could ask the sysops to blacklist it, stopping all future edits that contain a link to it. However, that's quite extreme, and I don't want to suggest that without knowing what the website says. Any help would be appreciated, Cheers, MartinRe 00:17, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. This user is also vandalizing tr: and az: wikis. I've encountered that link in several Turkey related provinces and cities articles. Most of them are faking, like [xxx.com About X province], actually its not about what it says. And i removed them all. About web site, i look it again. First of all, the sites heading is "Current Çankırı News", this looks like innocent, but firts of all its in Turkish and currently its now known even in Turkey. Currently, there are a few news about Çankırı. My opinion is, he is a guy trying to promote his web page also there is a link "Reklam ver" "Give advertisement". I hope this helps you. if you want ask any questions, i'll try to help you.--Ugur Basak 00:36, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Martin, now that spam site is in blacklist. But he can start using a new domain name for spamming.--Ugur Basak 09:19, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. Thanks for the note about the website being added to the black list. Yes I know he can add under a different domain, but hopefully having the main one blacklisted should be enough discouragement. We'll see. :) Cheers, MartinRe 09:42, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA[edit]

Thank you!
Thank you!
Hi Ugur Basak/Archive1. On behalf of my right eye, I'd like to thank you for giving me your support on my recent RfA. It ended with a final tally of (73/2/2) and therefore I have been installed as an administrator now, and I'm ready to serve Wikipedians all over the world with my newly acquired mop and bucket. If you have any questions, do not hestitate to forward them to my talkpage. Once again, thanks for your support. SoothingR 21:05, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VIP vs AIV[edit]

Hi Ugur Basak. I noticed you added an entry to Vandalism in Progress. That page is only for very specific cases, as described by the page's guidelines. Your alert would be better placed on Administrator intervention against vandalism (WP:AIV), where it will usually be processed within minutes. Many alerts that are incorrectly placed on Vandalism in Progress are never dealt with, simply because they become old before an administrator gets to them. Thanks for your efforts. :) --lightdarkness (talk) 00:37, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Lightdarkness. I was asking myself why noone block them:) I add it to my watchlist. Thanks for your help--Ugur Basak 00:58, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not the appropriate place for this but...[edit]

You seem to be a moderator? If so, what are the rules about REVERTING "discussion" pages? I wanted to omit things from the DISCUSSION portion that has nothing to do with the actual article but it was reverted twice, recently by you. My assumption is that I probably was not suppose to do that? Mamoahina 14:20, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:66.215.18.34 has removed some comments ([6]) without giving a reason, and i reverted them. Its better to give a reason in edit summary part. Cheers--Ugur Basak 14:42, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification. I didn't know it also applied to "discussions". I only felt that it was really unrelated to the topic in DISCUSSION, not the actual ARTICLE but for sake of argument I'll leave it as is. I just hope that the people whose names were mentioned don't decide to sue since their names were mentioned on here, although the intention was never to harm them. --Mamoahina 17:32, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually i didn't read. There are more than one users comments deleted without giving a proper reason. Actually after i read the discussion, it is not %100 related to article. But it's better to write a reason in Edit summary when removing comments or info from a page or discussion page. When we don't write somethin in Edit summary, other users can't understand why we do that action. Thank you for your positive reply.--Ugur Basak 22:27, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you![edit]

For reverting vandalism to my userpage [7]--MONGO 15:08, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings[edit]

Greetings! Fellow wikipedian. Let me introduce myself: I am a historian interested in Slavic history, and there is a problem that I must solve. It's regarding Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović. I noticed that you have been editing the rich Ottoman history articles, and I ask you can you confirm to me (and give a source => possibly a commendable Turksih historian?) who was Mehmed before he came to Istanbul and converted to Islam. Thank you very much in advance! Could you please respond to my talk page, if it's not a problem? Thanks again! --HolyRomanEmperor 21:10, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I couldn't find any good referance for you. But i have an Ottoman Historian friend when i see her online i will ask her for referances. These are my links, a book by Radovan SAMARCIC he said Bosnian and one more link [9] here it is Serbian. I will ask for real referances to my friend. Cheers--Ugur Basak 22:54, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! Please notify me when that historian arrives. Thanks again! --HolyRomanEmperor 10:32, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Any chance you heard of that Ottoman historian by now, Ugur? --HolyRomanEmperor 13:49, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to say thank you for voting for my RFA, of course if you ever need a hand, let me know :) - cohesiontalk 23:06, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I noticed you gave a test1 warning for this guy. He was given test3 a couple of days ago, so the next one should be test4, not test1. It looks like you're a long-serving vandal fighter, so I'm sure you're clued up about this, and that this was just a mistake, and that I've wasted the last five minutes typing this message to you. Oh well. Thanks for your time... =) -- gtdp (T)/(C) 00:36, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're correct:) That user has already given test3 9 hours ago. Does it really take 5 minutes to typing that message:) Thanks for noticing me.--Ugur Basak 00:41, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! To be honest, it's nice to see somebody else patrolling Special:Newpages for a change...and yeah, my typing's slow at the moment, it's almost 1:00am... need...sleep... -- gtdp (T)/(C) 00:44, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Its 02:46 here. i need a sleep too:)Cheers--Ugur Basak 00:47, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
