The Resysop RfC
Hi Valereee. I know you've been around for ages, a few months longer than i, and that seems almost forever, but i confess i don't recall running across you till your RfA a bit ago. Regardless, i just wanted to say that i appreciate your participation in the current RfC on the resysop process and requirements. There are all sorts of people there i admire, arguing both for and against proposals and, indeed, the very RfC itself; i really admire the stand you are taking, that the previous RfC has thrown up a clear perception of an issue among non-admins, and that in itself becomes a problem requiring some sort of solution. - LindsayH, thanks for the kind words! I respect and admire the people there, too, and I'm finding it just puzzling that anyone would think a problem perceived primarily by one group could be considered not a problem because another group doesn't see it as a problem, especially when the group perceiving the problem is seen by many as the lower-power group. New Page Review newsletter November 2019
Hello Valereee,
This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.
- Getting the queue to 0
There are now 816 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

- Coordinator
Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.
- This month's refresher course
Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.
- Tools
- It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
- It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
- Reviewer Feedback
Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.
- Second set of eyes
- Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
- Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
- Arbitration Committee
The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.
- Community Wish list
There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

I've been a pretty vocal advocate, especially in the past year, of seeking out and encouraging a much wider variety of Wikipedians to run for the Arbitration Committee. I'd like to encourage you to think about running this year. Arbcom benefits greatly from having a wide diversity of voices, especially those who are able to articulate well. You have solid experience in working in challenging areas, and with difficult editors, both of which are also helpful in handling the sometimes complex matters that come before Arbcom. To be clear, this isn't an endorsement for anything other than hoping that you'll consider becoming a candidate. If you decide this isn't for you, that's fine too. - Valereee, fwiw I had considered coming here a few times to make the same pitch. While this year's arbcom has been crazy I don't think people stepping up to tackle challenging problems on behalf of the community are crazy (at least not the good ones), I think they're committed to service. - This reverse bandy is actually why I hadn't come. In response I'll point out that you have 2.5x the administrative experience of me and would bring a kind of diversity to the committee I would not. I will also point out that it's felt, outside of Risker, that the bandying has just been people being polite and that no one has shown up to my talk page - let alone TWO people. I would also point out that your leadership in the resysop criteria shows just how ready and how good you would be. We have 11 open seats. If we're to have good people on ArbCom - and I really want us to - we need some number of people who think "not me" to step up. I think we need at least 15 good candidates to make sure that the overwhelming number of empty seats goes to the right kind of person rather than how many ever "fair" or "unsuited for ArbCom" or "in it for the power" candidates step-up. - Well, I'll just add here that I think *both* of you would be good candidates. The Arbitration Committee needs a good dose of renewed energy with people who are willing and able to help the committee re-orient itself. I think back to when I first ran for arbcom back in 2008 (appointed in 2009), which was a very similar situation. The majority of the committee that year was new to the role; we made a rather remarkable number of changes in the direction of the committee. Some of them worked well (the rewriting of the Arbcom policy and its acceptance by the community), some were good interim measures (Audit subcommittee, to review CU/OS activities, and BASC to review unblock requests), and some didn't work out quite as well as we'd hoped (community selection of new CU/OS, which worked okay when it was an open vote, but failed when we tried to use SecurePoll). We also put a LOT of pressure on the WMF to take over roles that weren't suitable for volunteers (dealing with paedophile advocates, global bans) or supported volunteers doing difficult jobs (LFAP). There aren't nearly the number of actual cases that there used to be. Both of you could handle all of these sorts of things. Risker (talk) 15:29, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

I saw your notice at Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship. I know that once I got "the bit" I was pinged a few times at DYK to promote hooks but I had absolutely no idea how to do so. If things are really that dire, I do not mind lending my little mouse to help out but, as with anyone new, it would likely be very slow. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 22:10, 13 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hey, HickoryOughtShirt?4, thanks for reaching out! There's actually only a very minor thing to learn to do (2.2 here), the issue is that to move a prep > queue, you're basically doing 8 re-reviews of DYK hooks/articles, as you're re-checking the entire set. It can take (if I'm any example) a couple of hours, depending on whether you run into something that requires a lot of work. The move itself only takes a couple minutes, it's the checking of everything that is the time issue. I'm happy to do it once a week, twice when there's a temporary shortage of admins due to everyone going on vacation or whatever. :) But if I regularly do it more than once a week or so, I'm not in a good frame of mind and I start feeling kind of snippy, miss things, etc. --valereee (talk) 22:39, 13 November 2019 (UTC)
Pinging Vanamonde93, too. Valereee, I hope the discussion at Talk:Main Page today was helpful. Regarding the proposed RfC on a new user-right for the Main Page: I have no problem at all with more people getting involved with TFA, in any capacity. The problem is that TFA is a relatively small part of what happens on the Main Page ... so I wouldn't want to give a special TFA badge to someone who's mainly interested in and knowledgeable about, say, DYK. They might not know where to look to figure out what to do (and what not to do!) about a TFA complaint. Also, instead of creating a new user-right to make it easier for people who like to lodge complaints at the last minute (I'm not pointing a finger, but it happens), I'd really rather we encourage people to either speak up sooner or to post in the subsection WP:ERRORS#Day-after-tomorrow's FA (new since September). The blurb isn't protected on that day, so everyone can participate, and we need 24 to 48 hours' notice if we're going to ping the people who worked on the article at FAC. (Needless to say, I'm not opposed to any new user-right that doesn't involve the TFA section of ERRORS ... that's above my pay grade.) - Dank (push to talk) 19:25, 15 November 2019 (UTC)
- Dank, we didn't see the new right as a special TFA badge -- it's more a special main page badge, and just like I don't want to interfere in main page spaces I don't understand (like yesterday), we'd only give this right to people who we trusted to not interfere where they didn't have familiarity. And also not to those who are familiar with a section but wouldn't be trusted not to edit without consensus. But I don't know what to think. Maybe put in an alt proposal that is same, but sections may opt out by consensus at that section's talk page. In short, I don't see why your objection doesn't also apply to every single new administrator; and conversely, if it doesn't, I don't see the basis for your objection. Finally; the intended users are not those who carp on ERRORS, but those who've had previous experience fixing those issues, by preparing and curating articles for the main page. - And in fact, removal of this right is MUCH MUCH MUCH easier than removal of admin rights. Template on Scott Jurek article

- Hey, XRENEGADEx! Yes, phrases like "was one of the most dominant ultramarathon runners in the world" are a problem. Unless someone else is saying them -- and then we should be using a quote and attributing that quote -- then it's just the editor's opinion. We WP editors don't insert our own opinions into articles. :) The entire article has problems like that, plus a lot of unsourced material. Anything we can't find a source for doesn't belong in the article, even if it's demonstrably true, because if no one else is talking about it anywhere, it's not important enough to include in a WP article. For instance that he was valedictorian of his hs class. Or the list of accomplishments, almost all of which are unsourced. Someone else should be talking abou this stuff, or we don't include it.

Hi val! BTW I noticed you added the Cincy cat to your user page. I've never been but I once drove down Rt. 24 from Ft. Wayne to Detroit. Northwest Ohio was the flattest and emptiest place I've ever been to in my life. I remember about halfway through the drive, I came across the biggest Wal-mart I'd ever seen. It was like finding an oasis in the desert. Anyway I digress. I came here to ask you: when you figured out the admin/non-admin !vote counts for the activity requirements RfA, did you do that by hand, or is there some script that helps? - Levivich, I did it by hand. If you find some script that would do similar, I'd love to hear about it, but I suspect it would be seen as potentially divisive to make looking at those stats so easy that people would be tempted to do it for every question ever asked anywhere. And yes, northwest OH is basically prairie scraped by glaciers. Cinci is SW, which was formed by river action through the stuff the glaciers scraped off northwest OH, then dumped here as moraines when they melted, so we have actual hills. --valereee (talk) 19:05, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
