Pakistan categories

Hello VasuVR! While you were tagging categories into WikiProject India, you have, I believe by mistake, tagged some Pakistani categories and templates under the project too. I have compiled a list of some of these:

In addition to these, some Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan user location templates were also tagged. If you could please do a clean-up of this as soon as possible (and possibly other Pakistan-related pages that may have been tagged in the process, which I have missed), that would be great. Thanks in advance and all the best, Mar4d (talk) 09:15, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Could you do something about it soon? Mar4d (talk) 15:19, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

RE:Fresh Tagging

Thanks buddy, yes Im interested in Mumbai - Iv been speaking to bot operators on ways to get more articles tagged WP Mumbai since a lot of articles from the city have not been tagged by the project. In the last week Iv manually tagged articles that were earlier not tagged. Cheers, Around The Globeसत्यमेव जयते 09:38, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Some articles in Gujarati links are about people whose ethnicity is Gujarat but they're born in Pakistan, so i guess they don't matter to WikiProject India so I'm not tagging them for now. Any suggestions? --kondi talk/contribs 14:27, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
Yes, you may drop those false positives (my term for want of a better term), where you do not think it will be of interest to WP India. They need not be tagged. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 14:54, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
Cool thanks. --kondi talk/contribs 21:52, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

India Assessment 2012 and AWB

hi, can you please tell me how to load pages from [1] into AWB, i can load the categories into AWB but this one is not. as you had made this Page so thought of asking you. thanks-- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 23:11, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

For those using AWB, I had given separate page with just list of articles. For example, see Jharkhand List. You can directly go to edit the list, copy the content into your Notepad (assuming you use Windows operating system) and save it as a text file. Then in AWB, you can also load from a Text file, where you would choose the saved file. The list is now in your AWB to process. Hope this helps. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:33, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
sorry, some more details please. i use win7 . Following you i will have txt file containing lines such as "# Sadni Falls" now how to load this as a list in AWB, ? -- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 01:37, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Copy that full list from the editor into a text file. For example, open Notepad, paste the content from the list and save it as, say, Jharkhand.txt in your computer. Then open AWB. In the Source drop down list there are options to load Text File (UTF-8) and Text File (Windows 1252/ANSI). You can choose either of them and press "Make List". At that time AWB will ask for the local file name. Choose the Jharkhand.txt from wherever you had saved it. Now AWB would have loaded the list from the text file. Hope this is sufficient for you to take up further. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:42, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
  • looks clearer now , i will try this and trouble you again if this doesnt work , actually i am an AWB newbie and i am still learning my way to control this useful monster, thanks -- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 01:47, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Correction

Hi Vasu! I noticed you while tagging a User Template, and noticed an error when you assessed Template talk:User Mumbai University. Thank you Yash. I have learnt a bit from the various articles that were assessed. One comes across some interesting information and some useful information. This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of List of compositions by Muthuswami Dikshitar, and it appears to be a substantial copy of http://carrot.dreab.com/p-Muthuswami_Dikshitar.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. Thank you. It is just that analysis of lists, comparing them, trimming and then finally assessing with a tool like AWB helps in doing a stream-lined process in quick time. Would love to see the ZERO that everyone wants to see... :) --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:25, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
I alos have the same motivation to get to the zero mark, qualitatively. With consistent contributors like you, it is just a matter of time. Thanks again. Ssriram mt (talk) 01:31, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Hey, I just completed the Assam links. There were only a few false positives. The list begins with an article Haat Bihu. So, the list begins with the alphabet "H". I wonder whether there are eligible articles from "A" to "G"? They were not listed?--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:40, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

The history is this. First I started with Andhra on my own and there were some 3000 articles. After a few hundred, I wanted a change. So, next I took up Assam. After going through the initial articles, I started wondering how much would be there in all other states. When I compiled the lists, I was overwhelmed. I could not think of doing all the states on my own. So, at that time, I brought it up to Sriram for collaboration and coordination guidance. Hence you will see that Andhra list also starts somewhere in H and same with Assam. Hope this clarifies. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 00:43, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Yes, that is ok. So, after most of the states in that list (as it is) are done, the same mechanism may need to be done again, to cover articles that were not included (by that time, some of those remaining articles may automatically be coveted by others). --Dwaipayan (talk) 00:54, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Yes, ideally another round would be useful, but there would be higher percentage of false-positives (as same would turn up again - that is articles in India related categories, either by mistake or by fringe relationship). Also, have to cover the non-state based categories, like literature, geography, history, politics, etc. I will keep the board posted on what I find - this may be in early May only, as I think it is better to complete the existing tasks first and then do a full sweep. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:05, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited List of compositions by Muthuswami Dikshitar, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Adi, Tala and Kalyani (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Fresh WP India tagging

Hi Vasu, Can you please update the TN list, TN links. Ssriram mt (talk) 01:23, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

I did not understand the request. Is it to reduce false positives and negatives? Or is it to update based on progress already made? --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 02:15, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
Yes - reduce the false ones. I need it to be made up-to-date. I am not sure how you go about doing it - can you please update?Ssriram mt (talk) 02:30, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
OK. Here goes some history. The process of getting the lists are as follows: (a) Get list of all articles under state category (say, Category:West Bengal), with full recursive fetches. (b) Get all articles within WP India by looking up all the quality and importance categories (25000 limit on AWB list, hence the separate processing). (c) Use AWB List comparer to remove all articles from (a) which are already in (b). This forms the list for the state.
Now coming to individual cases, West Bengal shared lot of articles with Bangladesh, J&K with Pakistan, Punjab with Pakistan, TN with Sri Lanka. So, then I started digging around the categories manually and in case of WB found that some Bangladesh categories were wrongly included into WB hierarchy. By reorganizing the categories, I reduced the Bangladesh articles. Then I went about (a), (b) and (c) again for WB. I was successful in this case, because of the wrong categorization in the first place.
In the other cases, like J&K, Punjab & TN, I was not able to find any incorrect categorizations. That is, some Sri Lankan articles are bound to come up because of the sharing of Tamil Culture, Tamil Language, etc. In all 3 cases these are the master lists and one has to manually eliminate whatever is not of interest to WP India. I am sorry I cannot help further, at this point of time. If I was not on vacation, I may have done some manual elimination of SL categories from the list itself (step a) before continuing further, but it is a tedious and long process. That is, either way it is a tedious manual process only. So, as of now, kindly continue with the list I have provided. Sorry about that. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 05:29, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Another wiki

Hey, I am developing a wiki specifically for Carnatic Music and related topics at http://rasikas.org/wiki as I realized wikipedia will not specifically suit CM & India related topics as it is somewhat like the internet itself (a mix of everything under the sun). I see you contribute extensively on CM on wikipedia and guess you may like to continue doing that... but with your experience on wiki formatting etc, I think I can draw your help if you'd not mind contributing to Rasikas.org's wiki as well. As it is, it's now a blank slate and I am just importing the trinity's compositions one by one. The bio pages of the musicians and composers, raga articles etc is what I think I can take other people's help from. You can reach me by gmail on the same id as WP if you are interested. Either way, even if you are not interested, please let me know, no worries. Thanks Srkris (talk)

Hello. Thank you for the invite. As I am quite busy with my work and personal side, I have not been able to contribute much to Wikipedia, including Carnatic music articles. It will be difficult to get time to do that, or to do the similar task in Rasikas.org. With respect to raga articles, I am not sure I can add much more than what is in Wikipedia, including the images for the scales of the ragas. Hope you can take that and move forward. In case the situation changes, I will get in touch with you - either here or at rasikas.org and we can work out appropriate plans. Thanks and Regards. You can do it yourself. Click "Move" at the top of the page, and opposite "To new title" take care to select "(Article)" from the drop-down list in the left-hand box, and enter "Kirwani" in the right-hand box. You are NOT alone! :)

Hi Vasu,

To aid you in your lonely vigil, I've sort of initiated a mini-drive for assess & tag. With the community pitching in, perhaps we can get it done in a month. However, a coordination page (much simpler than 2012) would be required & we'd also need a volunteer coordinator. Considering that you have been championing this cause when all were hibernating & given your past track record, it seemed just to approach you first & foremost to ask whether you'd like to be the volunteer coordinator. Please give me your answer soon. Either way its okay. Happy assessing, AshLin (talk) 14:41, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

Honoured by the request. Thank you for the kind words. Coordination means a lot of things, including time, planning, interactions, productivity, etc. The main reason for my earlier contributions have been only that last one - productivity - by using a combination of tools to improve that for me as well as other participants. And of course, timing - that in those times I had some spare time which somehow I decided to give to Wikiproject India (those 2-3 months). I am not sure I will be able to dedicate much time & it could be in such random spurts, unpredictable. Hence, would like you to consider another candidate to coordinate.
On the curiosity side of what kind of tag-and-assess you have in mind, I would like to know your thoughts. That can help me think again - but otherwise, I will have to decline the role of coordinator.
VasuVR (talk, contribs) 14:49, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
Briefly...
  • Create a bare-bones Tag & Assess page 2014 by reusing the 2012 page text & cutting down extra stuff.
  • Daily status needs to be monitored & a screen capture of the WikiProject India Article table done each morning. I used to load it to webcite so that Commons neednt be cluttered up.
  • Update user totals periodically (you can ask them to do it themselves or do it yourself).
  • When completed, shout with joy & award Barnstars to those over 250 assessed articles.

WP 1.0 Article Summary Table for WikiProject India - two versions?

Hi,

It appears that the summary tables for WikiProject India, shown in our Project pages, differs greatly from the actual state.

The WikiProject India Main Page shows a view (supposedly updated each night at 0300 hours UTC). It shows 69 FAs, 41 FLs, 281 GAs & 131,775 articles totally.

On the other hand if you click on any of these numbers in the table, say the FA page, it takes you to a page where the total number of FAs shown are as 72, not 69. And so it is with each category of articles summarised in the table on WikiProject India.

On each of these WP 1.0 project pages. there is a link for summary table. Clicking it takes you to this page. Here the summary table appears to be updated and shows 72 FAs, 45 FLs, 292 GAs & 135,143 articles totally. Any idea why this discrepancy exists? AshLin (talk) 14:00, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Statistics on Wikiproject India pages come indirectly from the User:WP 1.0 bot's sub-page. The history of India sub page clearly shows that after 12th June 2014, it was not updated until 14th (my manual update) and then followed by 16th Nov 2014 bot update.
NOTE: The bot update has reverted my Template class related update as shown in the diff here - search for football. What the Hell! Anyway, it is some basic problem in WMF Labs. I will wait and then raise it to some one else if nothing moves forward on this!

need apihighlimits right

{{admin help}} I use Autowikibrowser, especially for Wikiproject India related work. Requesting for "apihighlimits" rights to extract 2 or 3 lists in total, so that our "Tag and assess" drives can be made more efficient and productive, while saving a lot of time. I plan to take these lists and work with them on Excel to come up with "action plans / action lists".

Kindly provide the "apihighlimits" right to my ID. I will use this with No limits plugin of the Autowikibrowser.

Thanks in advance. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:19, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Apihighlimits is not included in the list of user rights in the administrators' tool for changing user rights. In a default mediawiki installation, only bureaucrats have apihighlimits right. I have searched, and failed to find any documentation anywhere about anyone other than bureaucrats being given the right on Wikipedia. My guess is that if the right is available for editors other than bureaucrats, you will at the least need to consult a bureaucrat about receiving the right. However, I am leaving this help request open, in case another administrator who knows more about the issue than I do can help you. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 20:16, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
@JamesBWatson:. I am striking out the request for apihighlimits rights. I checked Autowikibrowser tool and whoever has an admin / bot rights can also run the no limit queries. Can an admin/ bot please get me the list of pages placed in the category Category:WikiProject India articles - using the No Limits plugin within Autowikibrowser? The results can be put into a subpage of my user page, say User:VasuVR/WPIndiaArticles.
That will be sufficient for now. Thank you in advance. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:54, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Weird edit-summaries

I agree with assessments and tagging, but [2] seems to have nothing to do with WP:EL. Is this spill-over from what was supposed to be happening in article-space rather than article-talk? DMacks (talk) 18:35, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

@DMacks: my mistake in using wrong edit summary - it should have been "Wikiproject India Banner addition", instead of the "WP:EL" summary - did not notice the earlier summary continuing for these (about 15) edits that followed my earlier removal of links from Article space. I will ensure the further work gets edit summary of "Wikiproject India Banner addition". VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:56, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for checking it out. And thanks for your on-going tagging and other work! DMacks (talk) 02:09, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

Indian biography articles

Hello! Just FYI, {{WikiProject Film}} does not cover biography articles such as actors and filmmakers, those articles are covered by adding |filmbio-work-group=yes to {{WikiProject Biography}} instead. This applies to all of the film task forces as well. The Indian cinema task force specifically states that it is about "domestic films, films made by Indian filmmakers abroad, films produced or co-produced by Indian companies, and foreign films shooting in India". Those are all articles about films, and should include the |cinema=yes parameter. However, it does not include articles about Indian actors, directors and filmmakers, because those articles should NOT have the {{WikiProject Film}} banner on their talk pages, and consequently should not have the |cinema=yes parameter on the {{WikiProject India}} banner. Thanks! Fortdj33 (talk) 02:33, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

@Fortdj33: I am aware of the guidelines and I thought I had diligently followed them. I had tagged cinema=yes only for films and not for the "people". If there is a slip in one or two articles, kindly correct them - I am not planning to go through my 1000+ tags to figure out which 1 or 2 has been missed. Thanks. T. S. Nandakumar

Hello VasuVR!
"Hobbies being Carnatic music ..." Eh? Great! Please, if possible, take a look at the new T. S. Nandakumar BLP where I have been 'chasing' after new editor AkhilHulk (talk · contribs) (for ≈4.5 hours just today!!) . I have been trying to advise them about normal WP editing practices after they started off with copying text from a website. Unfortunately, after leaving them seven message I haven't got any response in return other than my edits being undone without explanation, and a few edits that seem in response to my templated messages (with a few personal custom ones/ template additions thrown in).

  • Let me know if you think I have been too 'harsh' on a newby editor.

If you can help, please chime in! Regards, 220 of Borg 06:35, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

@220 of Borg: editors and edits like these really make me crawl back under the blanket and hope the power will go out from the world because it is dark around me! Peacock terms, promoting the article, etc., is difficult to teach the newbie, where possibly Shri T S Nandakumar may be related or the guru of this editor. The article may be about a person who has reached a professional level, but I need time to figure out how much of the claims can be substantiated. I will try to do something during this weekend. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 07:24, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
I feel much the same way! I have ≈1.5 Gb of Internet usage to use up in <5 hours now, (end of my monthly 'usage' period). and instead of downloading useful stuff/ updates/ watching er .... 'naughty' videos or Youtube I've been reverting poor edits and trying to get their attention! Most annoying was their linking to Kerela (which is in Mali, Africa; instead of Kerala) and their reverting of that when I fixed it.
Thanks for your reply, I too am wondering about Nandakumars notability. From past experience it seems the more extravagant the claims, the more likely they are to be bogus!
• The use of such 'flowery' or laudatory language (and over-use of titles and similar) seems to be either an Indian 'cultural' thing, or the way they are taught English perhaps. I've been meaning to ask 'someone' about this. --220 of Borg 08:29, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

Assessment using AWB

I have been using AWB for some time, mainly for diffusing Category:Indian politicians. I wanted to know how one can add assessment tags to talk pages of articles. Thanks.--Skr15081997 (talk) 06:23, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

@Skr15081997: first I make a list of articles I am interested in using AWB's variety of options to create a list. Then I use Excel / MS Word / NotePad / vi/ vim (tools / editors) to manipulate the list and also add the talk (if list had articles) or articles (if list had talk) to the list. Now, I have a bigger list (double) with the Article followed by its Talk page, then next article, followed by its talk page, etc. Now I run through AWB with Skip option "don't care" and no other criteria. In this way I review the article and skip it - then automatically the Talk page is presented. I add assessment parameters according what I saw in the review and save it. Then it presents the next one!
Basically, it is a matter of thinking outside the box of AWB and trying to use other tools in combination with AWB to come up with a master list and then running through them using AWB. Hope this helps.
Specifically, right now, I used the Category:Unknown-importance India articles as the list and am running through it to set the class (mostly stub / start) and the importance (mostly low or mid).
Earlier, in 2012 and also a few days ago, I had taken the master list of India articles from admin and compare it with the AWB category lists (full recursion) on various topics (using AWB lists comparer tool). It gives list of articles that are not in India articles list but is in a category of Interest to India (for example, an article created under Buldings and Structures of Delhi, but not yet tagged with WP India banner in talk). NOTE: We are comparing Talk list of India articles with Articles list of categories. Hence you have to flip them using AWB before compare.
With inclusion of other tools, the utility of AWB to productively "organize" our work seems quite endless.

Hi,

I have youtube videos of Carnatic Music raga introductions taught by reputed teachers in music, which I wanted to add to the Wiki pages related to ragas. Can I add these links in the section on arohana/avorahana or only in external links? I am new to Wiki and not sure where to add external links. I also have small excerpts of lessons taught in various ragas. Can these be added also?

Thanks Sowmya Acharya — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sowacharya (talkcontribs) 05:37, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Sowacharya: It is not encyclopaedic to add a specific person's links to Wikipedia as per Wikipedia guidelines. Each link should have encyclopaedic content, which is accepted as adding value to the article and without such "unique" information it would seem to lack some material. Clearly this is not unique links that you are planning to include.
If that information is available in abundance, one cannot choose A vs B vs C. It has to be mentioned as important by reliable sources, and should be notable, etc. For example, if we take Mohanam, we will have 100s of renditions on You Tube. Which one is considered as the "right one" to link? And who considers this as "appropriate"? If we talk of teacher's rendition - which teacher is considered to bring out the "right" example of Mohanam?
Hence there will be contention and also it is against Wikipedia guidelines. Please read external links guidelines as well as reliable sources, verifiability and notability concerns. I would suggest do not add ANY of them. Thanks. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 06:11, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply. I understand your statement in that how do we know which is reputed and not? These videos are taught by acclaimed teachers who are well regarded in the field . They very clearly establish the rules of the raga and would be a great resource for students of music. Since these are music resources, audio and video would help people get a better idea. Is there a way that the background of the person teaching the video can be established as reputed and therefore there would be no issues differentiating this from thousands of other amateurs who start making videos without any substance?

Thanks Sowmya Acharya — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sowacharya (talkcontribs) 07:54, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

@Sowacharya: I think you do not understand the subtlety of the issue. The person can be acclaimed and notable. You will agree there are 1000s of acclaimed and notable teachers. For example, every top artiste who is a teacher in current scenario are notable - don't you agree. One person will say Shri P S Narayanaswami's rendition should be included, another will say Dr. Balamuralikrishna's is the right one, while a third person will say that Madurai T N Seshagopalan's is the right version. Now there is NO way we can stop edit wars when one starts plugging in personal preferences.
The problem is not with "acclaimed" - the requirement for an encyclopedia is that it should be a unique resource that adds value. No teacher can claim that they have the "right" and "unique" reason for their own rendition to be included in Wikipedia while there are 1000s should not qualify / be represented in Wikipedia. Do you agree?
For example, please go through Carnatic music page where we have wars about who should be included in the page and who should not. Who is considered the father of this music and how much relative importance should be given to other stalwarts? By including any You tube links you are only inviting edit wars.
Personally, if I notice such importance to one person out of 1000s of great people, I will "boldly" remove such material added to Ragam pages. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 09:29, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Undoing my edits on the articles of various ragas

Hello. Thanks for starting the Wikimusic project. I have noticed that you've been undoing my edits on all the Carnatic raga related articles. It seemed fair to me when you undid my first addition of a Thiruppugazh to the Hamsadhwani article, but your recent undoing of several of my edits seems unnecessary, especially considering that you have tagged it WP:UNDUE.

I notice that someone had a query regarding linking videos from youtube - possibly not CC-licensed and your reply to them, tells a lot about why you reverted my edits.

It is not encyclopaedic to add a specific person's links to Wikipedia as per Wikipedia guidelines.
Thanks.

In the above reply, while your point of uniqueness holds good, your opinion that links/music files don't have encyclopaedic content, and do not add value to an article if they are not unique seems flimsy, and is also detrimental to the progress of articles where audio files would be more useful than text. Carantic music can have no uniqueness, except for adherence to the underlying notation.

As far as I can see, WP:UNDUE is used to retain WP:NPOV. Can you please point out what is the minority view point I am trying to project when I link a music file that

  • Is not promoting anyone since it is picked randomly because it is CC-licensed, and it adheres to the unique notations that Carnatic music has in place?
  • Is not furthering or weakening any stance?
  • Is not representative of any view point at all?

Please also elaborate on why you think the weight added by the recordings is "undue", in your opinion? Personally, I would assume that someone interested in a composition by Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar would find a recording on the composition useful, especially when it adheres to the underlying notation. Such a recording would be of immense value especially in an article that mentions the varnam.

A varnam by Poochi Sreenivasa Iyengar in Mohanam is going to be largely the same, and resemble other recordings of the same varnam, and vary in small ways from other recordings of the same varnam, since the underlying notation satisfies your expectation of uniqueness. This is expected of any recording in Carnatic music, and is representative of such an aspect of Carnatic music. I want to emphasise once again that a recording of a certain composition adds more value to the article than simply naming the composition itself. - Aruna Sankaranarayanan 15:52, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

@Arunasank: - you have good arguments, but let us simply go by Wikipedia guidelines. True that when I kept the "summary" of my edit short I gave the wrong tag of WP:UNDUE, while actually all those that you have quoted are the actual objections.
To be specific, anything included in an article needs to be from a "reliable source" (WP:RS), "notable" (WP:N) and "verifiable" (WP:V). In this case, we should look at which sources in the outside world have noted that these particular recordings are notable recordings of these particular musical scales? These sources who find the recordings to be notable should have brought it out in notable form - not a blog or newspaper article (which is a point of view of the author) - it has to be a paper, research book, etc. I am sure you can read up the guidelines of Wikipedia further.
You have misread the context of links/music being not encyclopedic - I have not said that. Please read the full sentence and get the context - it is the unique resource, in combination with acknowledgement as a notable and verifiable resource that such link/music represents the particular article, and has been sourced from 3rd party reviews or similar guidelines that qualify for notable reliable sources.
Yes, there is so much value in lots of things - but Wikipedia also needs to maintain its own standards, integrity, verifiable reliable information, etc.
Kindly provide sources where these have been reviewed by notable people and recorded in 3rd party sources as representative of a very good rendition of the said musical scales and/or songs. Hope this answers your queries.
VasuVR (talk, contribs) 17:15, 7 July 2015 (UTC)
@VasuVR: Thank you for your reply. :) I am a little new to Wikipedia, so I hope you can clarify further.
To be specific, anything included in an article needs to be from a "reliable source" (WP:RS), "notable" (WP:N) and "verifiable" (WP:V).
What about photographs that are uploaded by amateurs to Commons then? How are they notable, reliable and not promoting a photographer's point of view? Do only famous photographers contribute to Commons? Why then do we have a different standard for musical recordings? Especially when the recording is of a good quality, and sticks to the underlying notation of the composition?
In this case, we should look at which sources in the outside world have noted that these particular recordings are notable recordings of these particular musical scales? These sources who find the recordings to be notable should have brought it out in notable form - not a blog or newspaper article (which is a point of view of the author) - it has to be a paper, research book, etc. I am sure you can read up the guidelines of Wikipedia further.
Earlier I have uploaded arohanams and avarohanams(Which I have since been reverting) - they are not notable(I am not notable) - but surprisingly none of them have been deleted so far. I have been deleting them myself as and when I find a suitable recording in that particular raga. I am assuming(and I may be wrong) that they weren't deleted because an arohanam/avarohanam is seen as being of unique, encyclopaedic value, while a composition is not.
Thanks for bringing up the point of the recordings having to be part of a research paper - most of my recordings were in fact part of a research publication. If you look at the source page of Mohanam varnam, you'll notice the following sentence:
"This recording is made publicly available as part of the Carnatic Varnam dataset, from CompMusic project. If you use it in your work, please cite the following publication:
Koduri, G. K., Ishwar, V., Serrà, J., & Serra, X. (2014). Intonation analysis of rāgas in Carnatic music. Journal of New Music Research, 43(01), 73–94."
Does that change your stance in any way?
Aruna Sankaranarayanan 12:28, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
@Arunasank:. You have valid points about media inclusions, with the comparison of photos to other media. Photos indeed are a bone of contention and people have edit wars over which photo should be used in the article. It is a pain and I have not participated in such edit wars to my knowledge. I have however removed audio/video links which most times were added by their related people (disciples, friends or sometimes the individuals themselves).
It is again to avoid the edit wars, from audio/video links perspective, that I have removed them in the past. With your citation mentioned above, I will have to change my stance to neutral. If no one reverts your addition, it would stay - we will have to try and see. If there are edit wars with others starting to proliferate additions without citations then we will have to address it at that time. Hope this clarifies my stance now. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 12:50, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

@VasuVR: oh yay! So, can I go ahead and fix up those articles and add the media to them? Would adding the media to the talk pages and discussing them, be a good idea? :) - Aruna Sankaranarayanan 17:48, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
@Arunasank: I am not the owner of wikipedia. I just happened to initiate the Indian music project and have some passion in adding information on Carnatic music, but I am not an authority. We will do by consensus.
I think it may be best to discuss in another single forum that may be watched by a few people, especially, talk page of Carnatic music page. After a few days, if there is no comment, then you can go ahead for those which you feel are not trivial renditions (like you mentioned raga scales - arohana, avarohana).
Just one minor comment on the arohana / avarohana - since just singing the musical scale up and down does not really represent the ragams and there are lot of nuances in the rendering itself, adding arohana/avarohana renditions are actually misrepresentation of ragams in my opinion. For example, even if Kalyani and Shankarabharanam have only the Madhyama different, the renditions of vadi, samvadi swaras and also how differently Rishabham and Gandharam are treated in them makes important effect and shape to the ragams. Hence I had not included my renditions on keyboard at all - it is very amateur work. However I have provided them on my personal website. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:20, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
@VasuVR: Sure, thanks for taking the time to tell me all of this. :) I also think adding arohanam avarohanam makes no sense, but adding recordings itself in a certain raga makes a lot of sense to me. Maybe an alapanai or an RTP makes more sense than a song for a ragam page and adding recordings of compositions makes more sense for the pages of composers.

Increasing carnatic music files on Commons

Hi again! :) There's some progress since we spoke last regarding increasing the audio files on Commons. One of the nicest things I found was the compmusic channel on youtube that has several files(audio, lec-dems etc) which are all CC-licensed. I'd love to upload all of them to Commons, but I am wondering if there's a way to automate this. Would you happen to know of any automation script - even one I can modify - that takes videos from youtube and uploads them on to Commons? Aruna Sankaranarayanan 16:33, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:53, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

List of rāgas in Indian classical music

You are right of course, my apologies for making this decision without first discussing it on the Talk page. I removed the category 'Carnatic Ragas', because the categories 'Jayna Ragas' and 'Melakarta Ragas' are already sub-categories of that Main category, so they appeared double and mixed. About the list, here also all ragas of the different categories were mixed up, making it hard to understand what belongs to what. I noticed that the Jayna ragas, Melakarta ragas and Sikh ragas already had their own lists on separate page, so to avoid duplications, my idea was to put only the ragas in Hindustani music on this page. This doesn't mean we can't put the rest back there of course. It also depends on if it is possible to determine if the ragas without their own page that I restored now under the header 'Other' can be categorized easily or not. Are they all Hindustani, or do they belong to different categories? Another idea I had was to change it to a sortable table, with one or more additional columns with some further classification (like morning, evening, associated deity etc.) Please let me know your thoughts. @Wiki-uk: Yes, you are right that many ragas belong in lists that are subsets of the Indian classical music list. They also have categories. On the top of my head, I can't answer how this list can be enhanced - but agree that it has to be enhanced. Table format is good along with the type and other information. However, I will need more time to think over it, look into other attributes, before I can give an answer with sufficient weightage to your question. Thank you for responding quickly.
