Copyright Violation Detection - EranBot Project[edit]

A new copy-paste detection bot is now in general use on English Wikipedia. Come check it out at the EranBot reporting page. This bot utilizes the Turnitin software (ithenticate), unlike User:CorenSearchBot that relies on a web search API from Yahoo. It checks individual edits rather than just new articles. Please take 15 seconds to visit the EranBot reporting page and check a few of the flagged concerns. Comments welcome regarding potential improvements. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. When using certain templates (such as welcome templates and user warnings) on talk pages, as you did to User talk:Ash12192, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. Copyright on Wikipedia[edit]

Investigating the copyright concerns flagged at Thomas Harrison (minister), I see your note at its talk page. The DNB can be used, as it is public domain. I'm afraid the material marked was not taken from the DNB, though, but rather too closely followed The Encyclopedia of Virginia. This content is not public domain by age, and we cannot retain material from that source without verification that it is public domain or compatibly licensed.

I realize that you cited your source, but unfortunately this alone does not permit us to copy or closely paraphrase it. We can use explicitly marked quotations from our sources, as long as we have good reason such as those set out at the non-free content policy and guideline, but aside from brief and clearly marked quotations used transformatively, all information we take from non-free sources must be put into our own words and structure.
