Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Wikipooba! Your additions to Tom Hearden have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. All other images must be made available under a free and open license that allows commercial and derivative reuse to be used on Wikipedia.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 13:01, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:04, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations, and thank you for helping expand the scope of Wikipedia! We hope you will continue making quality contributions.

Stop icon
You have been blocked indefinitely from editing certain namespaces ((Article), File, and Draft) for copyright violations.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  MoneytreesTalk🏝️CCI guide 02:26, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've blocked you per this CCI request. If you want to be unblocked, you must commit to no longer copying text from other sources- all content you add to Wikipedia must be in your own words. MoneytreesTalk🏝️CCI guide 02:28, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
I did not clearly understand the policy, and now I do. I will commit to not copying text or images from other sources. Thank you for your consideration! Wikipooba (talk) 22:05, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
First, it's a good to use this template when requesting an unblock: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}. Second, while it isn't that I don't believe you, being more specific with what you will do differently moving forward would help you further. Moneytrees🏝️Talk 03:14, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

When I added the copywritten material, I was unaware of the guidelines and thought that it was okay to add. I was new to creating and editing pages and in the future I will make sure that anything that is added falls under the guidelines. I am still learning and can guarantee that it was not intentional. Thanks!

Decline reason:

In order to lift the block, we need to be certain that you understand how copyright works on Wikipedia. To allow the reviewing administrator to assess your understanding, please respond to the following questions in your next unblock appeal, explaining in your own words:

  • What is copyright?
  • How is Wikipedia licenced?
  • Why is copyrighted content not allowed on Wikipedia?
  • Under what circumstances can we use copyrighted content?
  • How do you intend to avoid violating the copyright policy in the future?

Your answers will enable us to establish whether or not you should be unblocked. Yamla (talk) 15:00, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

  • Copywright is a law that protects original works of authorship from being reproduced by anyone other than the author.

  • To use copywritten material, the owner of the material must grant written permission or it must exist in the public domain.
  • I intend to avoid violating the policy by properly quoting, citing, and referencing text and properly detailing the origin and copywrite status of multimedia on its file page.
