Cat[edit]
Hi, WW. I see some of the campaign articles are showing up in a new category. If you look in Category:Military operations of the American Civil War I think you'll find that you're duplicating categories. Hal Jespersen (talk) 00:51, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
- The Campaigns and theaters of the ACW category was created back in May 2007 by Roger Davies. I thought that this category was for campaign articles (such as Maryland Campaign) while the Campaigns category was for the campaign battles categories (such as the Battles of the Gettysburg Campaign category). If these categories are duplicates, should the campaigns and theaters category be nominated for deletion? Wild Wolf (talk) 12:30, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
I apologize for mentioning it. I do not normally worry about these categories because I have a feeling that nobody really uses them for anything. So I do not really know the background of the category, which I had assumed you created because you are adding articles to it. I do not want to get involved with any official discussions about deletions. My personal opinion is that the three categories have names that are confusingly similar and that the campaign articles could easily be put into the same categories as the constituent battle articles. 83rd Pennsylvania[edit]
Saw that you reverted some vandalism on the Battle of Olustee page today. Thanks. I am on the Board of directors for the Olustee Battlefield Historic Site Citizens Support Organization and am Webmaster for our Battle of Olustee Web site at http://battleofolustee.org/.
I see you are interested in Pennsylvania regiments and looked over your list. Why not create a page on the 83rd Pennsylvania in the future? 1st Lt. Oliver Willcox Norton was a private in the 83rd when he and General Dan Butterfield rewrote Tattoo into Taps during the Seven Days Battles in 1862. Norton was in most of the battles in the Eastern theater up to and including Gettysburg, where he was the standard bearer for Col. Vincent and was beside him when he was killed. Years after the war Norton wrote "Attack and Defense of Little Round Top," and a compilation of his war letters, "Army Letters." The latter is hard to find but I have both books. Norton left the regiment in the summer of 1863 to become an officer in the 8th USCT. This regiment fought at the Battle of Olustee and I do an impression of Norton for living history there and at other places.
Our site has a number of pages devoted to Norton (http://battleofolustee.org/8th_usct.html) and I have a history of the Norton family someone sent me.
In Florida, you spend the late Fall, "Winter," and early Spring doing stuff outside. When it gets hot, as it is now, then you do stuff inside. I plan to spend more time on WP now that it is hot. I also plan to do more work on the Battle of Olustee site. I think my first chore will be to rework the Foods of the Civil War page in WP. I have a couple of books here to cite and that article is too scant as it is. Take care and thanks for looking out for the Battle of Olustee page. Obviously, it is on my watchlist and I have heavily edited it as well as the Olustee State Park page.

Battles in New Mexico and Arizona[edit]
Sorry, but I must continue to remove the useles "Confederate Occupation of New Mexico" template. There are at least four different templates all for the battles in New Mexico and Arizona during the American Civil War, another is not nesseccary. The Conederates did not occupy southern Arizona, it was their own territory which had it's beginning before the Civil War. Later the Southern Arizonans and Southern New Mexicans joined the Confederacy and became a Confederate territory. The only engagements in New Mexico that can be considered part of an occupation are the ones above the 34th parallel, the battles in the New Mexico Campaign and the battles involving native Americans. The occupation of Santa Fe and Albuquerque would be examples of a Confederate occupation of New Mexico.
The occupation of Mesilla, below the 34 parallel, first Arizonan militia of Confederate Arizona and the town of Mesilla, aided John R. Baylor's army, defeated the Union garrison of Fort Filmore and basically liberated the Confederates living in the town, they did not occupy Mesilla, they were welcomed by the rebel Arizonans who requested their aid. What I am trying to say is the Confederates did not occupy southern Arizona and southern New Mexico like the Allies did Germany during and after World War 2. The campaign was simply fought between rebel Arizona militia of Confederate Arizona, with aid from John R. Baylor's Texas cavalry and later Henry Sibley's army, against the Union Army and northern New Mexican militia.
The New Mexico campaign already has a template so the only one left is a template such as "Battles in Union New Mexico", for engagements such as the Navaho expedition in 1864 in northern Arizona and for battles involving Union and Confederate forces above the 34th parallel in Northern New Mexico. (there were skirmishes between New Mexican insurgents and Union forces in northern New Mexico, those engagements should have some light shown on them.) Please give me a response and do not re-add the template, it has no use, especially when half the battles are excluded from the "Confederate Occupation of New Mexico" template, which is something you must explain to me. Many thanks for rating Targeted killing. A quick question. The "start" rating makes it appear as though you have reviewed it, and it is start quality. In fact, I gather that you have only rated it start quality because one of the various rating aspects (citations) has not yet been engaged in (and the others are "B" quality). I wonder whether that does not, however, make it appear to the reader as though the article is start quality -- a conclusion that has not been reached (and may well not be the case). Given that, if you agree, does it not perhaps make more sense to leave it as unrated for mil his purposes, rather than make it appear to be of that lower quality? Thanks for the WPMILHIST class review. It looks like the only area keeping The Peacemakers from being a B-class article is "B-Class-1. It is suitably referenced, and all major points have appropriate inline citations." From my limited wikipedia experience, it appears that the major points do have citations. Can you please advise? Hi mate, when you assessed this for MilHist you made all criteria "yes" but left Class as "Start" -- although the code treats it as an overall B, could I get you to confirm that's what you meant? Jackson's Valley Campaign articles[edit]
Hi. Yesterday, I was enthused that someone was finally starting to clean up the Jackson's Valley Campaign articles. I corrected a few typos and then moved on, without recalling that the primary problem with some of these articles is that they are word for word copies from National Park Service articles. The NPS articles are in the public domain and therefore it is legal to copy the text, but over the years Wikipedia has determined that this is plagiarism and now deprecates the practice. I was the original creator of these articles with this text copying, but I have never found the time to go back and rewrite them (and I am quite busy with other projects, so that time will not be available in the near future). I simply added the NPS citations and a note in the talk page that this was a problem. It is not appropriate to remove the NPS citations and simply replace them with other books unless the text is rewritten to remove the plagiarism. - Thanks. No hurry on my behalf (obviously :-)), although it would be nice to have these corrected by 2012 for the sesquicentennial. Monmouth OOB[edit]
I rewrote the Monmouth order of battle with much more comprehensive data. At first I hesitated to do it, but I finally removed the Dr. Jeff Glasco order of battle. The 2-5 and the SK notations are fine for a war game but they just didn't look right in an article. Also, it was uncited, or at least it was not cited in the normal way to a book, magazine or internet article. If the professor wants to add his strength information back in, he can do so and I hope he will cite it. Ironically, much of my information also comes from a war game (cited), which however gave an order of battle down to regimental level. I submitted it for B-class review.
