Vandalism?
Hello. I noticed the level 4 vandalism template you left for 43.248.55.145 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). I don't think that these changes fit the Wikipedia definition of vandalism at all. It's curious, as the same IP received an accidental level 4 warning for some completely acceptable edits only yesterday. Might this be a mistake, too? BlackcurrantTea (talk) 09:07, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
- BlackcurrantTea You might be right, it might not be vandalism. The reason I reverted and warned them is because the article is on my watchlist and the edit appeared to be malicious. I wasn't sure, though, so I looked at the IP's talk page and found this. - ZLEA T\C 11:58, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

(Perhaps I'm too lenient.) I'd put that particular change and many of their other edits I looked at in the fidgety gnome category: not terribly important, not very noticeable, and the editor may have had a few too many cups of coffee. Recent changes
- You can now write all special letters in all African Wikipedia languages. This works in the desktop version. [1]
- There is now a field called
depictson Commons. This is a way to show what is in a picture with the help of Wikidata. It is still in development. [2] - Some tools on Toolforge may break on or after 3 June because of database changes. Maintainers should update their tools to use the new schema. [3][4]
Problems
- You will be able to read but not to edit Wikimedia Commons for 30 minutes on 19 June at 05:00 (UTC). This is to fix a hardware problem. [5]
Changes later this week
- Some wikis have one tab for the visual editor and one tab for a wikitext editor. Others wikis just have one tab. If your wiki has two tabs, clicking a link to create a new page has always opened a wikitext editor. It will now open the editor you used the last time you edited. [6]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 May. It will be on all wikis from 6 May (calendar).

US Commemorative Coins Articles
Hi @ZLEA:
I am interested in learning your work about commemorative coins. I have two questions for you:
1. How do you determine 1954 vs 1980 to be the split point of "Early" and "Modern". I ask this because I think it's interesting and important, but I like to learn your thinking process. What I would guess is the dissolution of Brettonwood System happens in the 70s marks the different meaning of US dollars (anchored to the metal gold) before and after(not anchored to the metal gold)~. Is that the main reason?
2. Why there is a gap between 1954 and 1980?

- Xinbenlv, president Eisenhower had ended the US Mint's commemorative coin program in 1954 for several reasons, with the most important being lack of interest from coin collectors, which meant that the mint was losing money. The program was continued in 1982, with no "traditional" commemoratives being issued in between (coins commemorating the bicentennial of the United States were produced in 1975 and 1976, but these are not considered traditional commemoratives as they were released into circulation).
- The removal of the gold standard had nothing to do with the end of the early series or the start of the new series. However, it did allow for gold commemoratives to be minted again. The mintage of gold commemorative coins was prohibited after president Roosevelt ordered the recall of federal gold in 1933. This order was reversed in 1974 with the passage of Pub. - @ZLEA: that's good to know. Since you mentioned in the Modern article that 1982 resumes mintage of commemorative coin, maybe it's also a good idea to mention in the "Early" article the fact that US ceased to mintage commemorative coin in 1954, in the "Early" article so readers could better understand the end of an era? - Xinbenlv That is a good idea, but when I split both the early and modern articles by decade, there will be no need, as the new articles will be lists. The main article will be United States commemorative coin, which will contain all that information.

Guideline and policy news
- An RfC seeks to clarify whether WP:OUTING should include information on just the English Wikipedia or any Wikimedia project.
- An RfC on WT:RfA concluded that Requests for adminship and bureaucratship are discussions seeking to build consensus.
- An RfC proposal to make the templates for discussion (TfD) process more like the requested moves (RM) process, i.e. "as a clearinghouse of template discussions", was closed as successful.
Technical news
- The CSD feature of Twinkle now allows admins to notify page creators of deletion if the page had not been tagged. The default behavior matches that of tagging notifications, and replaces the ability to open the user talk page upon deletion. You can customize which criteria receive notifications in your Twinkle preferences: look for Notify page creator when deleting under these criteria.
- Twinkle's d-batch (batch delete) feature now supports deleting subpages (and related redirects and talk pages) of each page. The pages will be listed first but use with caution! The und-batch (batch undelete) option can now also restore talk pages.
Miscellaneous
- The previously discussed unblocking of IP addresses indefinitely-blocked before 2009 was approved and has taken place.
- The 2019 talk pages consultation produced a report for Phase 1 and has entered Phase 2.

Recent changes
- When you create a PDF from a page on the wiki this is now done by Proton. Before this we used Electron. It should look the same but work better. Both use Chromium. This is a different system from when you collect several articles into a book and make a PDF from them. [7][8]
- The Flagged Revisions extension now uses the standard OOUI icons. There will be additional minor fixes for positioning in the next deployment. [9]
- Bots and other scripts that do not set an identifiable User-Agent may find their requests strictly rate-limited until they identify themselves properly. [10]

- Please check if the Flagged Revisions configuration on your wiki is as you expect (or as it was a few weeks ago). If not, please report it. [11]

Wow. What a great job of putting these together. Came to heap thanks on you, and to mention I've added the autocollapse code on the templates, have put all of them on United States commemorative coins, and that the 1970s-1980s template isn't linked. 2000 dollar coin mule error article
I suggest renaming the 2000 dollar coin mule error article to 2000 Sacagawea dollar – Washington quarter dollar mule (similar to the name used in this source). I find the current title confusing, as it appears to describe a coin with a denomination of 2000 dollars. —BarrelProof (talk) 19:46, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

- Although many people aren't so familiar with it, Wikipedia's Manual of Style prescribes the WP:ENDASH when appropriate. A redirect can be used from the form with a hyphen, but a hyphen seems incorrect to me. I also changed "quarter dollar" to "quarter" to be more concise. I also edited a related template and a related article. I hope you don't mind these changes – I understand that your opinion on some of this probably differs from mine. —BarrelProof (talk) 20:29, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
Washington quarters
I saw that you did not like my change of Template:Coinage (United States) to describe the newer quarters series as different obverse designs of Washington quarters (although that is how they are described in that article). But would you mind if I changed the date range of Washington quarters from "1932–1998" to "1932–present"? The article about them says that the current quarters are Washington quarters, which matches the common sense of anyone who looks at them. —BarrelProof (talk) 23:04, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
- BarrelProof Something you might want to think about is that if all Washington quarter reverse series' are placed into parentheses, half of the links to quarter articles would be in parentheses. In 2 years, the current program will end, and the mint will adopt a new design (that is if a new commemorative program isn't launched). I would suggest changing the "Washington quarter" link label to "Washington Eagle-reverse quarter" (or something similar) with the current date range. - ZLEA T\C 23:37, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

[[File:Filename.midi]]. Lateroverride_midiandoverride_audiowill stop working. Instead you will need to add the MIDI file below the music score. - The new version of MediaWiki for last week was not fully released due to issues. It was removed from most wikis on Tuesday and from test wikis on Thursday. [16]
- Most wikis were slow and then briefly read-only last week due to one of the database servers having a problem. It is now replaced. [17]

Guideline and policy news
- A request for comment seeking to alleviate pressures on the request an account (ACC) process proposes either raising the account creation limit for extended confirmed editors or granting the account creator permission on request to new ACC tool users.
- In a related matter, the account throttle has been restored to six creations per day as the mitigation activity completed.
- The scope of CSD criterion G8 has been tightened such that the only redirects that it now applies to are those which target non-existent pages.
- The scope of CSD criterion G14 has been expanded slightly to include orphan "Foo (disambiguation)" redirects that target pages that are not disambiguation pages or pages that perform a disambiguation-like function (such as set index articles or lists).
- A request for comment seeks to determine whether Wikipedia:Office actions should be a policy page or an information page.
Technical news
- The Wikimedia Foundation's Community health initiative plans to design and build a new user reporting system to make it easier for people experiencing harassment and other forms of abuse to provide accurate information to the appropriate channel for action to be taken. Community feedback is invited.
Miscellaneous
- In February 2019, the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) changed its office actions policy to include temporary and project-specific bans. The WMF exercised this new ability for the first time on the English Wikipedia on 10 June 2019 to temporarily ban and desysop Fram. This action has resulted in significant community discussion, a request for arbitration (permalink), and, either directly or indirectly, the resignations of numerous administrators and functionaries. The WMF Board of Trustees is aware of the situation, and discussions continue on a statement and a way forward. The Arbitration Committee has sent an open letter to the WMF Board.

- For event organizers, if you request a temporary lift of the IP cap for mass account creation, this will now also raise the edit rate limit for those new accounts at the event, which will prevent another bottleneck. [22]
- Administrators at all Wiktionary, Wikivoyage, and Wikisource wikis are now able to use the new partial blocks feature. [23]

Recent changes
- The mobile web will get more advanced editing tools. Seven more Wikipedias can use them now. This works for Arabic, Indonesian, Italian, Persian, Japanese, Spanish and Thai Wikipedia. You can try the tools on the mobile web and give feedback. [27]
Changes later this week
- The abuse filter system user will soon do maintenance edits on broken abuse filters. This user is called
Edit filterand has administrator rights. This is meant to fix technical problems. It will not do any other changes. You can read more. - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 July. It will be on all wikis from 18 July (calendar).

Future changes
- The Wikipedia app for Android will invite users to add image captions to images on Commons. It will only invite users who have added a number of edits in the app without being reverted. This is to avoid spam and bad edits. You can read more and leave feedback. [28]

Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.
Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:

Recent releases
The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:
- Section editing
- The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
- The team studied this with an A/B test. This test showed that contributors who could use section editing were 1% more likely to publish the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
- Loading overlay
- The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.
Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.
New and active projects
This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.
- Edit cards: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. Go here to see how: 📲Try Edit Cards.
- Mobile toolbar refresh: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
- Mobile visual editor availability: This A/B test asks: Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor? We are collaborating with 20 Wikipedias to answer this question.
- Usability improvements: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use. The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.
Looking ahead
- Wikimania: Several members of the Editing Team will be attending Wikimania in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the Community Growth space. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
- Talk Pages: In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin improving talk pages and communication on the wikis.
Learning more
The VisualEditor on mobile is a good place to learn more about the projects we are working on. The team wants to talk with you about anything related to editing. If you have something to say or ask, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

- Communities interested by easing newcomers' first steps can now benefit from the Growth team experiments on their wikis. Check the conditions and the request process.

- The release of the last version of MediaWiki (1.34.0-wmf.14) has been blocked for groups 1 and 2. [30]
Changes later this week
- Phabricator database will be moved to a different server. Writes will be blocked on Thursday 25 July, between 05:30 and 06:00 AM UTC. Reads will remain unaffected. [31]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 July. It will be on all wikis from 25 July (calendar).

Future changes
- Some items in the visual editor will change later this week. This will make it easier to edit links, citations, and templates on both desktop and mobile. [32][33]
- With advanced search turned on you will be able to choose the sorting order of the search results when you do a search. [34][35]
- Users who edit from IP addresses whitelisted on a request for temporary lift of the IP cap for mass account creation will bypass CAPTCHAs. This will happen in August. If you think this should not happen for some reason, please let us know.
- The variable
user_wpzerowill be removed from AbuseFilter. A list of filters needing a fix is provided.

Guideline and policy news
- Following a request for comment, the page Wikipedia:Office actions has been changed from a policy page to an information page.
- A request for comment (permalink) is in progress regarding the administrator inactivity policy.
Arbitration
- Editors may now use the template {{Ds/aware}} to indicate that they are aware that discretionary sanctions are in force for a topic area, so it is unnecessary to alert them.
Miscellaneous
- Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
- The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.
Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

Tech News
- There will be no Tech News issue next week. The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 2 September 2019.
Problems
- Some abuse filters stopped working because of a code change. Only variables for the current action will work. Variables defined inside a branch may not work outside of that branch. You can read more to see how to fix the filters.
- Only six accounts can be created from one IP address per day. Between 12 August and August 15 this was two accounts per day. This was because of a security issue. It is now six accounts per day again. [42]
Changes later this week
- Only a limited number of accounts can be created from one IP address. An IP address can be whitelisted so that it can create as many accounts as needed. This is useful at events where many new persons learn to edit. IP addresses that are whitelisted for this reason will also not show CAPTCHAs when you create accounts. This will happen on Wednesday. - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 20 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 21 August. It will be on all wikis from 22 August (calendar).

An infobox for historical currencies
Could you purpose for the creation of an infobox for historical currencies to the WikiProject Numismatics? It already exists on many other Wikipedia's and it would allow for more parameters to be created for obsolete currencies which the current currency infobox doesn't provide for. --Donald Trung (talk) 08:33, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

- My bad, I just looked at "w:nl:Vietnamese văn" and "w:nl:Nederlandse gulden" and they use the standard infobox for all currencies. However, the Dutch infobox has way more parameters for historical currencies such as preceding and succeeding currencies (something which is currently often done at the bottom of pages here, but could be used in the main "top infobox"). Plus the current infobox has a date of introduction but no parameter for a date of abolition. I think that the lack of these parameters is the main reason why many historical currencies don't have infoboxes. And those that do like "Reichsmark" or "Soviet ruble" don't show reasons for their abolition or the exact date.

Recent changes
- You can use the new termbox interface if you edit Wikidata on a mobile device. This is to edit labels, descriptions and aliases easier on the mobile pages. [45]
- The new version of MediaWiki has been deployed during the last week.
- The previously announced change of positions of the "Wikidata item" link on all wikis has been rollbacked due to unexpected cache issues. [46]
- The limit for rollbacks has been increased from 10 to 100 rollbacks per minute. [47]
- The advanced version of the edit review pages (Recent Changes, Watchlist, and Related Changes) now include two new filters. These filters are for "All contents" and "All discussions". They will filter the view to just those namespaces. However the "All discussions" filter does not include pseudo talk pages, like discussions that are in the Project: or Wikipedia: namespaces. But it will include changes happening on Project talk: or the Wikipedia talk:. [48]

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 September. It will be on all wikis from 5 September (calendar).
- When you log in, the software checks your password to see if it follows the Password policy. From this week, it will also complain if your password is one of the most common passwords in the world. If your password is not strong enough, please consider to change your password for a stronger password. [49]

Technical news
- Editors using the mobile website on Wikipedia can opt-in to new advanced features via your settings page. This will give access to more interface links, special pages, and tools.
- The advanced version of the edit review pages (recent changes, watchlist, and related changes) now includes two new filters. These filters are for "All contents" and "All discussions". They will filter the view to just those namespaces.
Arbitration
- A request for comment is open to provide an opportunity to amend the structure, rules, and procedures of the 2019 English Wikipedia Arbitration Committee election and to resolve any issues not covered by existing rules.
Miscellaneous
- A global request for comment is in progress regarding whether a user group should be created that could modify edit filters across all public Wikimedia wikis.

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 15
A final update, for now:
The third grant-funded round of WikiProject X has been completed. Unfortunately, while this round has not resulted in a deployed product, I am not planning to resume working on the project for the foreseeable future. Please see the final report for more information.
