No sense in doing so when that user has already been blocked. IanDBeacon (talk) 17:35, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh... more fun I guess...

It's pretty much at the point where I can't even understand what the edits are even saying anymore..... lol ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:03, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It makes you wonder if oversight should be used. Or lengthy protection. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:09, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh, I know... there's unfortunately no silver bullet right now that will both stop the abuse completely and let all other anonymous users contribute to these reference desk pages as usual. The AbuseFilter is doing very well at dragging the rate of attacks down with the throttle currently set. The unfortunate part is that each disallowed edit generates an AbuseFilter log each time it happens, and there's no tool to suppress multiple abuse filter logs like we can when we rev del multiple edits and logs. We get to suppress each filter.... one.... by.... one. My thumb and pinky finger is getting tired with all of the tabbing and hotkeys I'm using to try and get them done in a somewhat trot-like pace... haha ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:16, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps it's not necessary to delete the ones which don't even make sense. And edits like this. -- zzuuzz (talk) 13:22, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I guess it's probably already know by those dealing with it since as you would expect, they've made sure to tell us, but at least some of their edits which look to be a nonsense jumble of letters are ROT13. Nil Einne (talk) 17:25, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked proxies

Sorry for what is no doubt a stupid question, but after making that reversion on Wikipedia:Reference desk/Mathematics, where should I have reported it? "Blocked Proxy" doesn't seem to fall under either AIV or SPI. Thegreatluigi (talk) 06:19, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As it's a long term repeat vandal on a rampage, AIV (without warnings) would be appropriate. However for a slower more nuanced block, WP:OP can be used for open proxies. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:27, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I'm definitely hitting them with open proxy blocks just as you are. I'm just trying to keep up with all of the edits and abuse filter logs that need suppression and what-not... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:32, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, okay. Thank you. I just wasn't sure AIV was suitable since none of the four "reasons" you can give for the report quite seemed to fit. Thegreatluigi (talk) 06:36, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unprotected talk page

I see the Nazi troll has struck again. Thank you for removing. But I'm curious to know if the garbage was directed at me, or at other users? Or both? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots13:01, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ISTR it was mostly random, but you'd need to ask an oversighter for more info. -- zzuuzz (talk) 13:20, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Not worth the trouble. Sometimes I catch some of that stuff before it gets deleted. It's definitely worth deleting. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots13:45, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Baseball Bugs: I don't have access to such material but I know that some of the people named on my page were not me. I don't know if I was named there since I didn't see all of it, but I know I have been named in other sprees of theirs. I think pretty much anyone who regularly contributes to the RD has been named somewhere and actually they've gone further as one of their recent target's sole contribution was a reversal of their nonsense so I'm guessing they're now just farming the name of any contributors to any of the desks. Bad image list

You can take File:Tc.png off the list; Commons erased it and I had the local shadow deleted. Was this the goatse vandal again? Home Lander (talk) 02:10, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It was, and after factoring in the file name I defer this until later. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:44, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There have been a few more of these lately; I take it from the above Tc.png wasn't the first. zzuuzz, do you have any info on any of those accounts? Just noticed that the two I took care of were from somewhat dormant accounts, with seemingly fine enough histories. Seemed weird. ~ Amory (utc) 18:24, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I noticed that too with User:Nyllo. Are they compromised accounts? Or have they just existed this long without any LTA-like behavior?--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 18:27, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Been pinging commons sysops on IRC... ~ Amory (utc) 18:41, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I had a discussion about this recently here. I'll take a look at the latest lot, but there's probably not much to go on. On a side note, I recently blocked Abubakaraltholib and others for very similar behaviour. I think they might be different users. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:08, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So, based on the very limited hard information recently available, almost certainly compromised. @Nyttend, Favonian, and MusikAnimal: -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:49, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No block yet, for safety — I want to be really sure I know who you mean. Could you tell me which users, or otherwise show me where to find a comprehensive list of users, that should be blocked? I trust your analysis; I just want to be sure to avoid a {{unblock|I got blocked as a sock by mistake}} situation. And on second thought: as you saying that they're all socks, or all compromised, or some of each? If necessary, I can block someone with a rationale of "sockpuppet of blocked user or compromised by a blocked user", just to cover both options. Nyttend (talk) 21:59, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I can give you a (probably partial) list of accounts showing signs of compromise today. They're all blocked, but have been appearing fairly regularly: Mr-Thomas, FritzSolms, Jchahin13, Sporkot, Asenine, GrantyO, SeveredSpirit, Laghlagh, Nyllo. So, no action is currently required, just FYI. This is the porn (main page) vandal. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:06, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Got most of them. Nyllo already got blocked by someone else, and FritzSolms and Sporkot don't exist on Commons, but I blcoked the rest. Nyttend (talk) 00:34, 22 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Are you still doing some form of tracking on the compromised accounts? Just blocked another, Tbone55. -- ferret (talk) 15:50, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ferret: Thanks, yep same vandal. Keep an eye out for others :/ -- zzuuzz (talk) 16:10, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I'm up to 6-7 of them myself.. La buff was just hit, already blocked by Fav. Chatters in WP:Discord have noticed a bunch of these quickly and Ajraddatz has gotten them locked. -- ferret (talk) 17:04, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A serious matter...

I'd like to take the Standard Offer but could wave the six month rule? In return I promise to edit constructively, give up my entire sockfarm for blocking, and turn off the bot. What do you say, do we have a deal? Oh and btw contrary to what TonyBallioni thinks I really do have meticulous records of all my account creations going back to 2007. 187.109.80.62 (talk) 13:32, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

176.98.76.210 (talk) 13:41, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Patience. I do other stuff. I thought you were shuffling off this mortal coil? Trust is obviously an issue then, and obviously the first thing to do is stop the vandalism. But I can't make any promises about what the community will have to say, especially given your latest moment. I think it will take a little more than blackmail and asking for an immediate unblock. -- zzuuzz (talk) 13:44, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Alright I turned off the bot. Now, regarding my unbanning; since I never had a main account to begin with should I just start editing constructively under a new ip? But this is going to take some restraint on your part too. If you hit me with bans even when I ask and answer questions legitimately on the RD I will have to reconsider our arrangement here. 91.214.240.19 (talk) 13:57, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You should read what I wrote again. You are community banned, and will require a consensus at WP:AN to lift your ban. That's why I said it will take a little more. That's a British understatement. I mean of course a lot more. -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:02, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well I'm going to give editing constructively a go anyway and hope our informal accord holds. 91.214.240.19 (talk) 14:09, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So let's be clear with one another. Unless your ban gets lifted (see above) you're going to get blocked again. It is not within any single admin's capabilities to lift the ban. -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:12, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I get that, but the WMF can't punish you for not taking action. If another admin blocks me I won't take that as an offense. But if you follow me around on RD blocking me every time I edit constructively for being a proxy that would be unfortunate. It's up to you. 91.214.240.19 (talk) 14:22, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Fyi, it's definitely him, also on 159.8.170.10 yesterday. Changing every instance of "Swaziland" to "Eswatini" is a new special interest of his, mixed in with repeating his standard old chestnuts, from various proxies... --IamNotU (talk) 16:40, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, is there a sock investigation that I can reference on the many "[something something] avant gout d'été" accounts that have sprung up recently? Another two popped up a few minutes ago and I don't want to report them with the statement of "Ends in avant gout d'été and Zzuuzz blocked 10+ of these for account abuse yesterday".

This one and this one are the most recent.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Zzuuzz. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well, most days for the past four months or so (more so recently) so I'd recommend watchlisting to everyone. What typically happens is that a bad image gets added, and then it's quickly deleted or blacklisted, so revdel not always strictly necessary. It's more a temporary solution and often a case of WP:DENYing pure disruption. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:24, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

IMO, unmistakable. Done. -- zzuuzz (talk) 15:47, 1 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Purely disruptive material"

You really should be more careful about calling "material" "purely disruptive". - Nunh-huh 22:09, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Would you like to provide some context please? -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:23, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK Nunh-huh, I've had a look and I assume you're referring to these edits. The revision you edited contained this vandalism, and that's why the content was deleted. It may look like gibberish but it's not really. I'm sorry your contribution in the middle of the vandalism attack was removed by another editor[2] but if you want to put it back please do so. If there's anything else just let me know. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:38, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I was more upset at being labeled purely disruptive than at the loss of the opportunity for Guy to correct his malapropism (anathematized for anesthetized). But I do thank you for your most courteous explanation. - Nunh-huh 23:33, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summary vandalism

Hello, you recently handled vandalism on my talk page, and now a IP user 172.56.36.16 has also vandalized my talk page. I was wondering if you could deal with this appropriately as well? You need to read the edit summary to fully understand what they did. Thank you for any help you can give in this matter. Newshunter12 (talk) 00:42, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

zombie proxie

Thanks for looking into that and taking appropriate measures--I wanted to ask someone about that after I saw the earlier block and rationale but had to run off. Drmies (talk) 21:48, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any time. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:08, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Murder victim

Hello. I see that you changed the visibility of revisions on a murder victim article. There seems to be a revert by User:331dot at 02:08 on 11 December that you missed (I'm assuming that it falls into the same category as the ones you changed). Perhaps you could change visibility on this one too. Akld guy (talk) 20:59, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This was deliberate. The deletion should be considered a courtesy to a fellow Wikipedian who made a personal mistake, and not a means to suppress the name (the policy on this is explained on the article's talk page). I'm assuming, based on previous statements, that User:331dot is aware of the edit that remains and that they're OK with it remaining. -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:04, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand. You yourself posted on the article's talk page that WP:BLP was the primary consideration for withholding the accused's name, rather than a suppression order by an NZ court, but you allowed the revert by 331dot (which again named the accused) to stand. I don't understand your refusal to change the visibility of that revert. Akld guy (talk) 23:07, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's a subtle difference between removal from the article and removal from the history. And in fact it's an arguable point whether it should also be removed from the history. Personally I'm not persuaded about the need. However if you wish to pursue it you could ask either 331dot (or any other admin for that matter), or email WP:OVERSIGHT for a second opinion. -- zzuuzz (talk) 23:14, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Admin change visibility feature

94.102.124.207 for instance. I noticed you can mass change visibility on problem edits by editors. Can you please tell me what tool/how you do that? Once in a while, I run across mass vandalism like the one linked, and I'd like to be able to do what you did. Please advise. — Maile (talk) 16:58, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, highly recommended: User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/massRevdel.js. -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:02, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, let me ask...

Regarding WP:AN#Reduce a block I placed, what is the preferred method for determining whether an IP is being used by a proxy? I've reported some that are obvious - such as the ref-desk troll or the derp-vandal, but never found a definitive solution otherwise. Home Lander (talk) 21:56, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried this page? It covers a whole lot of it. There's a lot of variations, DUCKs, guilt by association, experience, and mistakes involved. Take the ref desk troll for example (pick an IP), we know they use open proxies so that's a yes. But also, you can put the IP address in your browser address bar, and see that it's a piece of hardware which you can guess is compromised. For example, this is not normal, well it's quite common for proxies. And then you can search for the IP and find it on proxy lists. If you see non-standard port numbers (look it up) you can guess it's compromised and probably difficult to confirm. But if necessary you can then confirm it using the aforementioned instructions. Now consider the IP mentioned at WP:AN. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:10, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Zzuuzz, just what I was looking for, will review. Thanks. Home Lander (talk) 22:15, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected proxy

Hello. Special:Contributions/185.25.51.135 seems to have been used by Shingling334, but geolocates to France (and I don't think he has used it because of being in France since he seems to have used this IP both today and a few days ago, but was blocked as an Essex TalkTalk IP yesterday...), so could you please check if it's a proxy? Sockpuppetry is happening again on this page, and another proxy is involved, likely the same guy who disrupted this page on October 20. Seems they’ve expanded to the related page. Would it also be possible to protect the template as well? Thanks! 66.87.149.161 (talk) 02:42, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello Zzuuzz,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 23:06, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

proxy block

Hi Zzuuzz, if you or someone is around, could you maybe see about blocking 185.117.89.70 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) and 185.117.88.250 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log), both being used by Shingling334, as proxies? I've already reported the first to WP:OP, but there seems to be a long backlog there. The second is already temporarily blocked for vandalism just now. Thanks! --IamNotU (talk) 22:17, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Shingling334 is currently back up on proxy 199.247.11.161 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) again. He's been using it on and off since October. It was blocked a few weeks ago for vandalism. There's still a backlog at wp:op - would appreciate a check, thanks! --IamNotU (talk) 23:52, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also 199.247.15.29 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) --IamNotU (talk) 00:13, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

new editor blocked

I noticed a new editor earlier today and left User:JasonMD123 a welcome (which added him to my watchlist), and just saw that he'd been blocked indefinitely. I looked at his edits and couldn't find anything inappropriate, other than misspelling "knighted" in his edit summary. I also saw there was an IP user going nuts on that page, so I was wondering if JasonMD123 had maybe gotten caught in the blocking actions inadvertently? Schazjmd (talk) 23:49, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The user can be found at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Shingling334. Policy won't allow me to disclose the exact evidence at play, but I can say there is definitely no doubt, no confusion, nor anything inadvertent. If you look through the SPI archives or the article histories you'll probably see the pattern. -- zzuuzz (talk) 00:03, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, zzuuzz, I appreciate you taking the time to explain. Schazjmd (talk) 00:37, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You need to look at this

[4] I've deleted pages created by "likely" socks of Diabedia, but this appears to confirm that they are socks and give other information that we might want to note. Doug Weller talk 15:47, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Remind me to CU block that IP. Diabedia is one of the messiest people I have ever come across, and the disinformation is always on another level. I'm struggling to see any connection to the Chinese flag vandal ("may potentially be related to" wtf?). Saying that, some of those Chinese IPs may yet be interesting. -- zzuuzz (talk) 16:41, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
