About the event[edit]

With 47 million articles in 229 different languages, Wikipedia is now both a well-established force for the democratisation of knowledge, and a key outreach tool, with one recent study showing that the encyclopedia shapes, as well as reflects, scientific thought. However, Wikipedia has many gaps and under-represented areas, one of which is Scottish culture.

One of the objectives of the SLIC Wikimedian in Residence post is to help address some of the under-represented areas of Scottish Culture with the help of public libraries. 2018 marks the 350th anniversary of the town of Girvan and Girvan Library are hosting a series of events to celebrate. Using the resources available at the Girvan Library and with the help of the Girvan local history group, we will work on improving the existing page for the town of Girvan, adding information about its history and its local area.
