Excessive fair use?[edit]

I'm not sure if there's some action to be taken against this, but surely this user, Hotspot is uploading "fair use" images with abandon? There are 54 images on his talk page (apparently his "sandbox") uploaded under various licenses such as Video Game Screenshot and Copyrighted Character. First of all, according to the Fair use, an image is fair use when it serves to illustrate the subject itself. For example, if I had a fair use image for Bill Clinton, I can't add it to the Lewinsky scandal. Fair use images are booed on for userboxes, so you should drop him a line about it. Fair use images are only allowed in articles. We won't even use them on the main page. As he does not seem to be a regular contributor, I linked all the pictures, (ie [[:Image:whatever]]). Deleted image when I have permission to use[edit]

I have uploaded a picture of Terry Anderson (Politician) three times. I have his permission and I have indicated on the tag and in the text. The picture keeps getting deleted. (a) How do I find out the reason for deletion? and (b) What do I have to do to stay within the rules?

The article has been deleted because it was marked as being 'for non-commercial use' or for Wikipedia only. This is not allowable. Unless the image can be used under fair use or released under the GNU Free Documentation License (or other compatible license), then it cannot be included on Wikipedia. OK, here is the story and may be you can help me pick the appropriate license. Terry Anderson is a local politician in Hamilton. I asked him if I have permission to write an article in Wiki and he gave his permission. I asked for a photo and he send me the image that is under discussion. Wikipedia does not offer such an email service, but you can make a watchlist to follow edits to chosen articles. It's possible an external site can be used to get emails [1] but I don't know how/if it works or what they do with your mail address. PrimeHunter 11:16, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Hyderabad Stock Exchange article does not provide that information, nor does it provide a link to an external site which does. So you will have to try your luck with your favorite search engine, for example: google:Hyderabad stock exchange. verification, i need some sysops or admin to verify some webs and blog[edit]

here, i found some malaysian wikipedian use web like http://malaysiakini.com and http://malaysia-today.net as a source and some blogs which is in fact not reliable source, so im here voluunteer myself to clean up all this mess, but i need some verification from sysops and admin whether or not its notable and reliable as a sources. or do we acctually need Wikipedia:Ignore all rules, and takes all blogs and most of the unreliable source to wikipedia. --Towaru 11:20, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Malaysiakini is allegedly pro-opposition but it is also supposedly free of government regulations - I think it could be used as a reliable source, just as long as the blogs are avoided. In the light of these allegations, however, it might not be the most neutral source - it probably needs to be looked at case-by-case. The articles are fine. WP article in "summary format"[edit]

is there a way to link to an article on wikipedia such that you get only: 1) the title; and 2)the first 512 bytes from the introductory paragraph? Alternatively, is there a "feed" service or something close to what I am looking for? If not, are there any scripts out there that do this? This would be useful when creating bookmarks to articles. Problems editing page[edit]

For some reason I can no longer edit the Yue Fei page. I recently rewrote the entire page and have never had a problem with it before. Now when I try to edit any part of the page, it brings me here (It should say "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"). I even logged off and tried editing the page anonymously and it didn't work either. I can edit other pages, but not this one. There has to be a reason for it. It had some very weird formatting in which the entire article was squashed to the right; this was caused by a missing pipe in the infobox. I could edit it just fine, but it wouldn't save. I think the problem with that was that I edit conflicted with Adrian M. H., but since it is such a long page the diffs took a long time to load. The weird formatting was my fault. I couldn't edit the page with my active account, so I logged off and did a 'test' (deleted a chunk of the code) to see if I could do anything. Amazingly the edit was accepted, but I couldn't edit after that, even as anonymous. I tried fixing it, but no dice. (Ghostexorcist 17:31, 21 April 2007 (UTC))[reply]

I am tempted to say AfD. It sounds sort of like a neologism but it doesn't look like a new phrase. Also tempted to redirect it to sacrifice but something tells me it is too strong. How can I save a page that I thought was interesting so that I can go back and read it more closely. When I start to look at a page I see a link and say "wow, I would love to read that when I have time" Like a wish list... do the Wiki walk when I have more time.

There really is no "wishlist" on Wikipedia but there are two simple things to do. First, you can place the titles of these pages on your userpage. Secondly, you can click the watch tab at the top of the article, this will place the article on your watchlist (you can access this at the top of the page in your browser, next to your userfunctions). Whenever one of your watched pages are edited they show up on your watchlist page. From this page you can display and edit your entire watchlist regardless of recent edits. Hope this helps! See WP:NOT#MYSPACE; Wikipedia has more than one million articles that need work, and userpages are supposed to be just a means to the end of building an encyclopedia. (One interpretation might be that allowing people to make fancy user pages as they please is a way to reward them for the free labor they provide to the encyclopedia project. But remember, Wikipedia is supported by donations from ordinary people, so it would be best to respect that by trying to keep user page content at least peripherally related to the main purpose here.) Citing a textboox[edit]

The easy way (discouraged, but not wrong), Create a references section at the end of the article and use either a citation template (Template:cite book or Template:citation) or any citation style you choose (MLA, APA, etc.)
The preferred way, use an inline citation. Put:
<ref>{{cite book |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |editor= |others= |title= |origdate= |origyear= |origmonth= |url= |format= |accessdate= |accessyear= |accessmonth= |edition= |series= |date= |year= |month= |publisher= |location= |language= |isbn= |oclc= |doi= |id= |pages= |chapter= |chapterurl= |quote= }}</ref>
directly after what you are citing. Fill in all the relevant info, remove any field you don't use (only "title" is required, if its in English, you really don't need "language"). If you want to cite the same book in multiple places, use:

Withdrawing an Afd[edit]

I recently submitted an Afd and after discussions on the talk page, it was determined that redirecting the article was a better solution. How do I, as the originator of the Afd, submit a withdrawal of the Afd? Thanks pgillman 20:15, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but how does one close the AfD prematurely? The Afd notice on the article states clearly it is not to be removed and their are entries in multiple locations that probably are edit protected from editors other than admins. Letting time run its course and having a well documented consensus in the AfD comments would achieve the same result, but I was interested in knowing if there was any guideline short-cutting this process.   • If the AFD is still open you can leave a note saying you want to withdraw the nomination in favor of a redirect as discussed on the article talk page. Template use question: For2 with string containing multiple links[edit]

Please look at Roman_Catholic_Church#Worldwide_distribution. I noticed another editor trying to fix a problem and became intrigued. I can't figure out how to make the template work.

The intent is obvious, to get the see_also to say

For the Roman Catholic Church regionally and by country , see Roman Catholicism by country, Category:Roman Catholic Church by country, and Category:Roman Catholic Church by region.

But currently we end up with extra [[ and ]] pairs, like so

For the Roman Catholic Church regionally and by country , see [[ Roman Catholicism by country, Category:Roman Catholic Church by country, and Category:Roman Catholic Church by region]].

The use of the For2 template looks like this:

{{For2 | the Roman Catholic Church regionally and by country | [[Roman Catholicism by country]], [[:Category:Roman Catholic Church by country]], and [[:Category:Roman Catholic Church by region]]}}

Living persons' ages in infoboxes[edit]

I just corrected a minor factual error in the infobox of the article Danny Trejo. He was born in May, 1944, which would make him 62 now, not 63. His infobox didn't have any age at all, in fact, until someone added it incorrectly as 63 in March 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Danny_Trejo&diff=115067564&oldid=114995203). Since everyone's date of birth never changes, but their age changes every year, couldn't Wikipedia be set up so that once the DOB is entered, the age would be computed when you view it, without any further editing? WikiMediaPlayer for Wikimedia problem[edit]

Hello, I'm starting to develop the Wikipedia project for the Aymara language, so I started with the Wiktionary and I wanted to include on each word the audio file for the correct pronuntiation. For which I also created a Template called "Arsu" (Audio/sound) based on what I seen in the English and Spanish Wikipedias. The Template came out like this:

it looks fine but when I hit on "pututt'añana yaxaniri" (play in browser) it leads me to the link:

my problem is that "%E2%80%8E" which appear automaticaly at the end of the link. I tried using other audio files uploaded by other users and they work fine. That is a Unicode left-to-right mark. I've seen this happen on my company's corporate wiki occasionally. I think it happens when copying/pasting in Internet Explorer, but I'm not sure exactly why or when. Basically, there is a hidden character that needs to be deleted. How do I figure out how a featured article is being nominated for speedy deletion?[edit]

Bulbasaur a featured article is currently in the queue for speedy deletion. It seems that it has a template on it which is nominated for deletion and it is part of the collateral damage. Any ideas on how to fix it. Capitalistroadster 23:37, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can I upload these images to the Commons[edit]

I have a three images that I'd like to upload. I've been told in the past that I can't upload pictures of artwork to the Commons so I want to be sure that I can put these there before I do and then have to move them.

Two of the three are of buildings, one of Quincy Market (I think it's a better photo than one that is already in the article) and one of Custom House Tower (again, I feel my picture is of better quality because it shows the building better). According to the Commons upload page, I can't upload "Photographs of art, statues, commercial packaging and often toys." but I don't know if buildings are close enough to being art or statues to be considered verboten.

The third picture is of a pig scalder which I believe I can upload to Commons since the upload page specifies that "useful or non-artistic objects (tools, dinner plates, etc.)" are allowed.

(edit conflict) Buildings should be safe. The problem with photos of art, etc. is that the artist's copyright still applies. You can't get around a copyright on a picture by taking a picture of it. I'm pretty sure you can't copyright a building (don't upload a picture of a store sign though) so as long as you took the picture it should be fine.
