Merge accounts[edit]

Why would I want to merge my accounts? Can I merge an account that has a different name on a different language Wikipedia? Can I still change my username after merging accounts? Thanks. Yoshiroshin (talk) 00:37, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

template[edit]

i am trying to create a page and i was wounering if there is a template that i can just fill in the information and pictures it would be for Dr. Jeffery Carbeck PhD. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mazieblue (talkcontribs) 13:07, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the information can be placed in {{Infobox Scientist}} (assuming it's a scientist) or {{Infobox academic}}, but you also have to make a normal article text. Note Wikipedia:Notability (academics). PrimeHunter (talk) 13:32, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

new wikiprojects[edit]

Can anyone start a new wikiproject? If so, I may be interested in creating one for Berks County, Pennsylvania. I've created a lot of articles about unincorporated communities in the county, and I'd like to have a place to work with other editors on the topic. What to do when reference in Wikipedia article links to site with a Trojan ?[edit]

In the article Śāntarakṣita the reference for the sentence "In the common accounts the local Bön tradition saw him as a threat and demanded he leave Tibet. He then advised the King to invite Padmasambhava to overcome the Bön resistance." links to a site ie: theosophytrust.org/tlodocs/articlesTeacher.php?d=Shantarakshita.htm&p=114 which contains a Trojan (JS Redirector).

Not sure what to do about this. I'm inclined to delete the whole sentence reference and all since the statement is not all that important and the referenced site seems a fairly poor quality source. I'd appreciate some advice about this. I've also added a note on the discussion page of the article. Chris Fynn (talk) 14:19, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find anything malicious in that page. What antivirus software are you using? --grawity 14:24, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Avast Antivirus - This gives a message that the site contains malware JS-Redirector B:Trj. About a second later I get another warning that a copy of the same Trojan is in my cache (using Firefox 3.0.1 browser). Chris Fynn (talk) 14:35, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In [theosophytrust.org/tlodocs/articlesTeacher.php?d=Shantarakshita.htm&p=114], I've only found one interesting snippet in files [1] and [2], but it doesn't seem to do anything malicious - it only loads a completely blank page in the background. --grawity 15:01, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I have the sensitivity of my Virus scanner set to High. I'm particularly cautious since I live in an Asian country where almost every PC is crawling with 100's of examples of malware. I can't put a USB drive from someone else in my computer that doesn't try to infect my machine. Generally I've found Avast catches lots of stuff Mc Afee & Norton miss (these are running on computers at work) - and when I encounter something new it misses and send an example to them they update their scanner very quickly.
Anyway I've found lots of other sources on Śāntarakṣita - As a precaution I'll try to find something similar in another source and change the article to reference that instead of the theosophytrust.org site.
If there isn't one already it might be nice to have a bot that scans new external links for malware. Chris Fynn (talk) 15:31, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay to create template for prominent family?[edit]

I'm wondering about the advisability of creating templates for some prominent families. This came up when I realized that the family of Mario Andretti and his twin brother Aldo Andretti had maybe 8 or 9 notable race car drivers, and the family runs several racing and non-racing enterprises, some of which are notable. This particular family is probably notable in its own right but it would be a lot of work to create an article. In any event most of the family members have an "Andretti Family" subsection to help people keep things straight. I looked in the relevant project space, Wikipedia:WikiProject American Open Wheel Racing, and there's nothing for or against creating templates for racing families. For comparison I see some families have their own article (e.g. Rockefeller family), some have a category (e.g. Category:Rockefeller family), some have templates (e.g. Template:Bush family - which is in a category of Category:Family templates), and a few have family trees using some software (e.g. Obama family). I was going to just get started, but thought I should doublecheck to see if there's any rule on this or if it's really a good idea. Also, is this the right forum? It didn't quite seem to fit village pump. Thanks, Wikidemo (talk) 16:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An Andretti family template or article sounds like a good idea to me. You could also post to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject American Open Wheel Racing. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:02, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Enniskillen bombimg[edit]

I wish to print off information relating to the Eniskillen Bombing + history of how troubles impacted on Enniskillen. Can you advise me how to do this as I do not appear to see it on my Computer which is Vista. Thank you. Contact email address is <email removed> —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.145.40.71 (talk) 17:49, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See Enniskillen bombing. Please do not provide contact information as this page is highly viewed across the internet. Also, please sign your posts by placing four tildes (~~~~) after your comment/question on talk pages. Thanks, Scottydude talk 18:47, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you know how to get to the page but not how to print it. When on the page, click "Printable version" in the toolbox to the left to get a printer friendly page. How to start printing depends on your browser. Look for a printer icon near the top of the window. If you still cannot print then which browser are you using? Username doesn't work.[edit]

I've logged in but my username won't come up as a page and is highlighted in red. How can I fix this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Blackbook668 (talkcontribs) 18:21, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A redlinked page means the page has not been created yet. User pages are not created automatically. Just click your user name, write something and save it. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:39, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading an image[edit]

Hi. I'm trying my hand at uploading an image, but it says that "The action you have requested is limited to Autoconfirmed users, Administrators." I thought that I was an autoconfirmed user. Any chance in getting this fixed? Thanks. Suntag (talk) 18:23, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You will become autoconfirmed 4 days after you registered, which will be today at 20:18 (UTC). —teb728 t c 18:34, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, Thanks. I'll try an upload at that time. Suntag (talk) 18:47, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is it not also required to make 10 edits before autoconfirmation? Mjpresson (talk) 19:11, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but Suntag has already done that and I guess TEB728 saw this before replying. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:48, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How did you do that?[edit]

this. do other people see it or am I going crazy? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.112.45.122 (talk) 18:59, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to the redlink. That indicates that the sleep deprivation does not exist. —teb728 t c 19:02, 26 July 2008 (UTC) Oh, it does; it went away when I purged the cache. —teb728 t c 19:04, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) sleep deprivation does exist now, but it was recently deleted and restored. The version of Randy Gardner (record holder) which had a redlink to sleep deprivation must have been built while the latter was deleted. Things like that can be fixed by purging. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:08, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
why does the purge page tell me to go to the sandbox? I don't want to purge that —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.112.45.122 (talk) 19:23, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just guessing here, but maybe the author worried that people would add unneeded permanent purge links to pages instead of using one of the other methods when they are more appropriate (which is most of the time), so the sandbox was used as an example in the only method which changes the page source. If you want to discuss it then you can post to Wikipedia talk:Purge. If you only want to purge a page then use one of the other methods. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:45, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage help[edit]

I'm trying to work on my userpage, but it dosen't do what i want.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Maddiekate/sandbox/userpage

1. How do i center my barnstars? 2. Why does "userboxes" look squished?

Maddie talk 19:11, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In answer to the second question, it's because there's a line in the code which sets the width of the userbox image to 300 pixels. Because the image is larger than 300 pixels, it therefore gets squashed. Remove "|300px" so the line looks like :

[[Image:userboxes403.png|center]]<br />

and it'll be fine. GBT/C 19:42, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For your first problem, use the <center> </center> tags around the barnstars. —D. Monack talk 19:45, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can override the default Wikipedia fonts. There are settings in your browser (Internet Explorer, FireFox, etc) but it will override it for every web site. If you create an account, we can help you with a setting with Wikipedia. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 21:20, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you create an account here, you can customize your wikipedia appearance. Mjpresson (talk) 23:43, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to take a screenshot and put it on the web somewhere, as I don't think we understand exactly what you mean. That would help us to figure out the problem. --tiny plastic Grey Knight 10:24, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
