Biography entry[edit]

How should I create a proper biographical entry of a living poet? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mukeshwilliams (talkcontribs) 06:06, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A Wizard is available to walk you through these steps. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

Before creating an article, please search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject. Please also review a few of our relevant policies and guidelines with which all articles should comply. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, articles must not contain original research, must be written from a neutral point of view, should cite reliable sources which verify their content and must not contain unsourced, negative content about living people.
Articles must also demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please see our subject specific guidelines for poets and other creative professionals at at people. Please note that if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends against you creating the article. Also, please closely follow our guidelines on biographies of living people, as Wikipedia articles may impact their public images. liquidlucktalk 06:16, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How to install and operate User:Lupin/Anti-vandal tool[edit]

Hello, can anyone tell me what I need to do to install and operate the programme mentioned above? Any contributions will be appreciated. I have set up my page @ User:Sp33dyphil/monobook.js Thanks Sp33dyphil (Talk) (Contributions) 07:47, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think you've done it right. You should see "filter recent changes" etc. on the left of the page under "toolbox". Deagle_AP (talk) 08:05, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Missing references in "Emma Willard" need help[edit]

I recently added a series of references to "Emma Willard." Previously there were no references. The reference numbers appeared in the final article, but the references themselves are not visable. The full text of all references are present on the edit page. I would appreciate it if someone could lend a hand on this page. Thanks. Elkmilok (talk) 10:07, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Elkmilok - the article was missing the {{reflist}} component, which I added in a new section titled References. This element is needed to make your references show up. Does that solve the issue? Gonzonoir (talk) 10:15, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You might like to read Wikipedia:Citing sources for a lot of information, some of which might help for next time.--BelovedFreak 10:23, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

can a company have an article?[edit]

Hi!

We are a Word of Mouth and Social Media company. We were wondering whether or not we are allowed to create an article concerning our company. We do not want to be mistaken - we are not seeking to advertise ourselves or our services. We would like to have a presence with an article on Wikipedia. Is that possible?

Thank you!

We are awaiting your reply! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.72.237.57 (talk) 10:58, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Two points. First, your company would need to meet the general notability requirements. Have you received substantial coverage in more than one reliable source (do read the link pages). Second, it is normally considered a conflict of interest to write an article about yourself or your company. If you pass the notability test, you could at most create a short stub article (just a few sentences) with purely factual details, including references to the coverage that makes you notable. Elen of the Roads (talk) 11:02, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Writing about yourself or your company is generally discouraged because it's a conflict of interest, as Elen says. (see Wikipedia:Autobiography) If you are sure that your company meets our guidelines for inclusion, you'd be better off making a request at Wikipedia:Requested articles. If your company is really that notable, then someone will get around to writing about it anyway. It's commendable that you're not here to advertise yourselves, but Wikipedia isn't really about "having a presence" as such either. Please also read Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations before you go any further, and feel free to ask any more questions here. --BelovedFreak 11:13, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia: Images[edit]

Is there any Wikipedia total image download tool for Wikipedia for windows? How to run wikix in windows?: Is there Wikipedia images for word/OO.O? Is there any websites providing Wikipedia images? I need whole images of wikipedia in above all questions. (please do not say I can't) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rishikeshan (talkcontribs) 12:44, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, you can't. That's not what we're for. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:57, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And Wikix can only be used if you have a database download, which is a very big file. --Mysdaao talk 13:01, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New article - Copyright issue[edit]

I'm attempting to set up an article for the Western Swing Society, a non-profit organization established to preserve and perpetuate western swing music. Apparently because our organization has a website (www.westernswingsociety.org) my article was stopped for copyright issues.

I established the website in the late 1990s. The site has never contained any copyrighted material, nor is any of it's contents copyrighted.

I'm bewildered by your battery of copyright legalese and hope someone will accept my testimony that there are no copyright issues related to the Western Swing Society article I'm hoping to set up on Wikipedia. I would also like to have an article labeled Western Swing Hall of Fame, but expect to run into this same issue.

1. Under American law, the website is copyrighted by the Society.
2. You have a severe conflict of interest here, and should not be trying to create an article about the Society. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:49, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you think you can satisfy Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) (most organizations cannot) then you can create a draft at User:Chhull/Sandbox and ask for a review. The first article you created had no independent sources and could also have been speedily deleted per Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#A7. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:03, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Notwithstanding the above, if you believe the society has attained notability, and know of independent reliable sources that support that idea, feel free to request an article, then leave it up to others to write it.User:LeadSongDog come howl 16:46, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thre is a double mess with the table near the bottom. I think it occurred by the edit [1]. Kittybrewster 15:59, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That edit changed the name of the template {{end box}} to use {{endbox}}, which does not exist. I have changed the name back. --Mysdaao talk 16:06, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

table borders[edit]

How do I make a table only have a borer on the outside, but still be divided into rows and columns on the inside? If I use border="1", every row and column gets a border. Thank you. --198.103.172.9 (talk) 17:49, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Try putting a table inside a table:
like this and this

There might be a more correct way, but this way is pretty simple. –Turian (talk) 17:52, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
style="border: 1px solid darkgray;" works for me:

Facebook and the usage of Wikipedia to validate a group, cause, business, etc...[edit]

Recently(today, 23Apr2010) Facebook made some changes to the user profiles that would allow for the profiles to link to 'pages' of similar interested individuals. They offer a form of 'validation' for these pages to be Wikipedia. I wanted to create a Wikipedia article referencing my startup business, for the only purposes of validating my existence to Facebook, I suppose. However, the article wizard clearly states this to be a conflict of interest... Am I reading the wizard correctly? I didn't just want to create the page but would perfer the discussion first. Thanx! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Freelanceg33k (talkcontribs) 19:03, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, someone asked this today already.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Help_desk#can_a_company_have_an_article.3F Freelanceg33k (talk) 19:05, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm curious. Did Facebook explicitly mention Wikipedia? If so, this may merit wider attention. TNXMan 19:06, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
this implies that Facebook and Wikipedia have an agreement. I'm not yet convinced, but we need to learn more.--SPhilbrickT 20:14, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is very cryptic "There is also a link to a Wikipedia article on the subject. Users can't yet add any content to these pages, but that ability will come soon."--SPhilbrickT 20:19, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So they're basically copying Wikipedia content to their pages? OK in theory I guess, but I can't imagine it remaining in any sort of coherent state for long. TNXMan 20:30, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The third reference seems to refer to simply scraping WP content - they don't need our permission for that, as long as they properly attribute it - however, the two cites I added imply that there is an agreement with WP, and hint at the ability to modify WP entries. There's no need for an an agreement if they simply scrape, so I'm wondering if there's more to it.--SPhilbrickT 20:41, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think Facebook is setting up a community page (say, for Boston) to which any one can add content (good places to eat, movie theaters, etc.). The base content will be a copy of the Wikipedia page on Boston. However, these community pages aren't editable yet, hence the comment from the article. TNXMan 20:47, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I even checked out the Signpost recently, but missed the announcement regarding Facebook there.--SPhilbrickT 13:00, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

orphan / wikify[edit]

Re: Midmark page

What do I need to do to remove the following from a page. I can add more internal links although it looks like it has a lot (to me). Not sure what it means about the layout?

This article is an orphan, as few or no other articles link to it. Please introduce links to this page from related articles; suggestions are available. (August 2009)

his article may need to be wikified to meet Wikipedia's quality standards. Please help by adding relevant internal links, or by improving the article's layout. (August 2009)

Thank you! Susan —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkaiser45331 (talkcontribs) 19:47, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The orphan tag means that the other articles do not link to the Midmark article. If you look at this link, Special:WhatLinksHere/Midmark you can see that no articles link to this article. The only pages that link to the Midmark article are talk pages and project pages. The wikified tag means that the layout does not conform to the manual of style. The first thing I see is the History section with all of the single sentence paragraphs. The section should be rewritten in actual paragraphs rather than standalone sentences. There are probably other items taht do not conform to the manual of style also. I have also added a tag stating that the references should be improved. There are only references for the last quarter or so of the article. Hopes this helps, if you have any additional questions let me know. ~~ GB fan ~~ talk 19:56, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(ec)Yes, the article has many wikilinks which are link from Midmark to other articles in Wikipedia. The reference to "orphan" means that very few other articles have any links to this article. None, in fact. Are there any other article in Wikipedia that could be improved with a wikilink to this article?
As for the layout comment, click on the word "layout" to see the guideline on how articles should be organized. The Midmark article has a long string of "paragraphs" made up of a single sentence each, which is usually a sign of poor writing style.
The article has very few references, and none of them are formed in a desirable way. The layout article mentions this, but you can read WP:CITE and footnotes for more information.--SPhilbrickT 20:06, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
