Redirects created -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:48, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

see all these red links? I wanna make em blue. Plz.

Thx. 128.59.181.17 (talk) 01:29, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why?
It seems the IP address wishes to create redirects for those pages. To create a redirect, you need to be registered. There are many benefits to creating an account, including the ability to "turn a red link blue". Intelligentsium 01:42, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I'm registered, I just locked myself out of my account during finals :( 128.59.181.17 (talk) 01:47, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what you mean by "locked myself out" (maybe just that you logged out), but if you refer to something like Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/WikiBreak Enforcer to prevent login for your account, then we can lift that. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:01, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Those links are still red ... This has got to be one of the most absurd experiences I've ever had on WP. 128.59.181.17 (talk) 15:37, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You could just use the shortcut WP:VPM, you know! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:44, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As a courtesy, I have created the redirects -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:48, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I never knew about WP:VPM ... :( ... thanks for letting me know 160.39.222.133 (talk) 16:48, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am trying to establish a subsection for history "Lexington, Illinois" but my edits do not appear[edit]

Is there some way to add history to the section on "Lexington, Illinois" ? I have tried several edits, but when I push "save page" rather than appearing, they vanish.

Second, are my edits gone for good or can I somehow find them again.

Elkmilok (talk) 01:33, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

see headlines.

?? You've made several edits, and they all appear in the article. Why do you think they are now there?--SPhilbrickT 01:41, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For example you added this bit:
Lexington was laid out on 4 January 1836 By Asahel Gridley and James Brown.
and it is now in the article. (It needs a reference).--SPhilbrickT 01:43, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Your second to last edit seems to have worked. In your last edit though, you have placed the information in the middle of a citation template, so the words are showing up in the References section at the bottom of the page. If you go to the page history for the article, you can see your edits. If you click on "undo" next to your last one, and then save, that will undo or "revert" your last edit. You can then put the sentence elsewhere. Make sure you don't put them in the middle of a cite news template, or in the middle of tags, as they'll show up in a strange place. Also, if you want to start off a new section, you can make a header like this: ==History== --BelovedFreak 01:44, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Click "my contributions" at top of any page to see Special:Contributions/Elkmilok which shows 5 edits to Lexington, Illinois. Or click the "history" tab at the article which also shows the 5 edits. Maybe you have to bypass your cache to see the most recent version of the page. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:47, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Forgot a shortcut to somewhere[edit]

What's the name of the article that guides users on how to use reviews in music articles? 24.189.90.68 (talk) 04:15, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WP:MUSTARD from "Music Standards" gives the general expected format for music-related articles. --Jayron32 04:36, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, but I'm talking about a guideline for music reviews. Like WP:SOURCES, but specific to music. I know it exists, but I can't remember the title or shortcut at all. 24.189.90.68 (talk) 04:49, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If it's not under WP:EIW#Music, it should be. --Teratornis (talk) 05:29, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe Wikipedia:Albums#Reception? --Teratornis (talk) 05:35, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's it, thank you. 24.189.90.68 (talk) 07:15, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject[edit]

What WikiProject would this fit into? I am trying to add a template to the article's discussion page. Chevymontecarlo. 05:48, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Games or Wikipedia:WikiProject Board and table games? I found those through google by the way. When I'm looking for a possible wikiproject, I find it easier just doing a google search or "Wikiproject" + whatever keyword is relevant. That usually works. There's also the project directory, but it takes a bit longer to search through that.--BelovedFreak 11:10, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

about seribu rupia[edit]

dear,

my question is that, the bank note 1000 seribu rupia which was made by central bank of indonesia in 1992 is valuable now or not?

Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. I hope this helps. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 10:31, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Phantomsteve is correct that this is a RefDesk question, but a quick Google offered an answer so I will give it here. If this this is the note in question, it is currently on sale for £3.50 $2. Karenjc 16:08, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, linked to the wrong note. Price and link corrected. Karenjc 16:12, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Redirecting to special pages[edit]

Is it possible to redirect an ordinary page to a special page using #Redirect Foo? 78.149.156.236 (talk) 12:41, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why would you want to do this? If you can be more precise, we can be more precise in our response -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 12:44, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the answer appears to be no... see User:Phantomsteve/test-special-redirect -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 12:47, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You can, of course, create a link - as here - but not a redirect -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 12:48, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I was really just wondering if you could. 78.149.156.236 (talk) 13:32, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An IP address[edit]

Hi. Since SineBot is currently not functioning, I am gladly taking the trouble of adding signatures after unsigned comments on the Refdesks until the bot is brought back to order. My question is: should I sign comments by 208.76.104.133 (please see the talk page)? All comments from that IP address are signed as

Anonymous, HH:MM UTC, Monthname DD, YYYY

and the edit summary is always !nosine!. Here's an example edit. Thanks. --Магьосник (talk) 13:35, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My suggestion would be not to sign the comments of 208.76.104.133. The editor clearly doesn't want his/her comments signed, and it's not a strict requirement. The edit summary "!nosine!" is done to opt out of SineBot's autosigning for that edit. --Mysdaao talk 15:00, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Losing my home[edit]

My name is Mrs. Susie Travis I have been trying to send an attachment with all the information needed to assist me. It's difficult to write the President and you, and you all are the only ones that can help. We've had our home for 10 years and were willing and able to pay the modification, but; Bank of America sat on our mortgage for 9 months now they say that they can't help us. We have been jacked from day one and need an email with attachments so I can send all the information.

Thank you Mrs. Susie Travis [details removed]

Please do not include contact details in your questions. We are unable to provide answers by any off-wiki medium and this page is highly visible across the internet. The details have been removed, but if you want them to be permanently removed from the page history, please email this address.
Hello. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our roughly three million articles, and thought that we were directly affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using the encyclopedia. Thus, we have no inside track on the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the left hand side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. --Mysdaao talk 14:54, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Since it appears that you're talking about a Foreclosure, please also note that Wikipedia cannot offer legal advice in any way, shape, or form. You'll want to secure the services of an attorney familiar with the laws in your jurisdiction. Google or your local bar association would be good places to start. Again, good luck. Locked out[edit]

I'm locked out. I've changed my password, so I know my username is right, and I've copied and pasted my new password, but that won't let me in.

Help?

Drg40

PS I've searched under "locked out", but get no answers.

See Help:Logging in. User accounts are never "locked", but there are a number of reasons why you are unable to log in. Usernames and password are case-sensitive, so make sure you are typing the correct capitalization. If you confirmed an e-mail address with your account, you can type in your username and click "E-mail new password" to receive a new password. --Mysdaao talk 14:48, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to get a new password sent to you, but one has already been sent in the last 24 hours, so hopefully you are now sorted! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:12, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see User:Drg40 has edited after the post here so I guess it's resolved. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:26, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Text to Speech[edit]

I have a learning disability, and often use text to speech to listen to articles. Is there a way to get extract text so it can be read in my text to speech program? For most new sites, I can use the print button and the text flows from begining to end. The way Wikipedia articles flow, I cannot see a way this can be done. I get the subtext from pictures mixed in and the word "edit", etc.

-Rob

In the column on the left-hand side of the screen there is a link to a printable version of the article you are looking at. That should get rid of some of the extra tags, although image alt-text will still be there. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 18:22, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Text to Speech (further comment)[edit]

Pertaining to the above question about text to speech, the printable version of the article still mixes up the picture subtitles with the text and does not flow logially. Is there any other facility to print just the text without the pictures and subtitles?

I have spent some time looking into this, and I don't think there is! I can't find any reference to a way to do this (even if you disabled images, the alt text would still be there!) - and even the mobile version and wapedia use images. The only page I can find that is text-only is Wikipedia:Main Page alternative (text only) - although the Wikipedia:Press releases tend to be text-only if they are held on Wikipedia.
I'm sorry, but I can't find a way to do this - I hope that someone can prove me wrong though! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 20:43, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What is your text to speech app? We should be able to come up with some custom CSS to ignore whatever you want to skip. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 22:53, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My addition removed without explanation, at least that I can find[edit]

I edited the Anne Murray page as seen at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Musicollector

However, someone has removed the item I added and I am not sure where to look for an explanation on why it was removed.

Please advise.

Thanks.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Musicollector (talkcontribs) 19:59, 28 April 2010

The place to look is the page history, which can be accessed by clicking "history" at the top of the page. In this case, several users have reverted your addition because it does not cite a reliable source, which is a requirement of virtually every fact that is inserted into a Wikipedia article. This is a core policy of Wikipedia, and not following it is especially bad in biographies of living persons because adding unsourced material can potentially get Wikipedia in legal trouble for defamation or libel -- although that chance is significantly smaller here because the material you added is not necessarily "contentious". Xenon54 / talk / 20:06, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi, the reason for the removal was shown in the edit summary as shown below (I've put it in bold):
 • 19:11, 28 April 2010 Musicollector (talk | contribs | block) (32,845 bytes) (→Success)
 • 18:31, 28 April 2010 Musicollector (talk | contribs | block) (32,908 bytes) (Added: She also happened to be Elvis Presley's favorite female singer.)
 • 14:02, 25 April 2010 Bovineboy2008 (talk | contribs | block) m (32,843 bytes) (remove peacock)
 • 19:32, 23 April 2010 C.Fred (talk | contribs | block) (32,867 bytes) (Revert to revision 355333258 dated 2010-04-11 13:43:45 by 77.165.232.135 using popups - unsourced claim re Presley
 • 18:58, 23 April 2010 Musicollector (talk | contribs | block) (32,932 bytes)
 • 18:57, 23 April 2010 Musicollector (talk | contribs | block) (32,932 bytes) (Added, "She also happened to be Elvis Presley's favorite female singer.")
As it says, the claim that she was Elvis' favourite female singer had no source to verify the information. I have also removed your latest edit for the same reason. If you want to add this information, you need to find a reliable and independent source that would verify it. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 20:07, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was curious, so I looked up this fact, and found an article in the Reading Eagle dated 24 October 1979 which mentions this, as well as a book ('The insider's country music handbook')! I have now re-inserted the information into the article, along with the sources (see diff). -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 20:26, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the clear explanation, for which I see the reason now. And, thank you for taking the interest and effort in investigating it further and reinstating my edit.

Have a great day.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Musicollector (talkcontribs) 20:31, 28 April 2010

Opening and Library and information science in Hebrew[edit]

Hello, My name is Y.Ouaknine and I would like to open a Library and Information Science Portal in Hebrew. The Main projects will be a translation in Hebrew of the English Content and The insertion of New content thru Professional network of Librarians and Information Science experts. Could you telle me what are the terms for opening this portal.

Best Regards, Y.Ouaknine

(BA - Information Studies, I will start MA - Information at Bar-Ilan University in October).

If you're referring to a Hebrew language Wikipedia, we already have one! Check out this page. TNXMan 20:12, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There's some information on the use and development of portals at Wikipedia:Portal. But please bear in mind that this is the English language Wikipedia, and content should be in English. Karenjc 23:09, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How can I add a new category?[edit]

For example I like to add a category to this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Software_companies_by_country I want to add new companies of a country which is not in the list currently.

Edit the article page: at the bottom add . Save the article. Now go to the bottom of the page, and find the category list. Click on the category you added. On the new page, just add , save - and you're done! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 20:29, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia use ontologies for manage the knowledge?[edit]

Wikipedia use ontologies for manage the knowledge and the relations between them?

Ontology is the philosophical study of the nature of being, existence or reality in general, as well as the basic categories of being and their relations - so I'm not too sure how you question should be answered! You might want to ask this at the Humanities Reference desk, as they will try to answer almost every question under the sun - apart from how to use Wikipedia, which is what this Help Desk is for! I hope you find an answer at the reference desk! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 21:30, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ontology is a term that arises in knowledge engineering - that is probably the sense the question refers to, what we might call "applied ontology". Computer scientists borrowed the term from philosophy, so you should specify when you mean the computer science usage of the term. See for example our article about the Cyc program. You may also like to read about semantic wikis, for example Semantic MediaWiki which might be the closest approximation to what the question seeks. --Teratornis (talk) 03:03, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you do refer to the computer science notion of ontology, better to ask at the Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing. The folks at the Humanities desk might not understand what you are asking. Incidentally, the Cyc article contains this somewhat vague sentence:
 • "In 2008, Cyc resources were mapped to many Wikipedia articles, potentially easing the connecting with other open datasets like DBpedia and Freebase."
--Teratornis (talk) 03:07, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, Teratornis - that makes sense now, and indeed if the questioner wants further information, the Computing reference desk would be the right one to go to! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 07:35, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notes vs References[edit]

Is there any general consensus on weather or not it is better to name sections containing reflist "References" over "Notes"? Immunize (talk) 21:47, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Have you looked at Wikipedia:CITESHORT? -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 21:50, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikipedia:Layout. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 22:09, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Notwithstanding, the weather, rain, snow, sleet or shine, whether or not it is better depends on the use to which you will put the section.--70.19.32.87 (talk) 00:42, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Where can I share my retail line, art gallery and my article..[edit]

I am confused. Requesting a links, please. Where can I share them? Thank you for your time, letsbef —Preceding unsigned comment added by Letsbefrienz (talkcontribs) Letsbefrienz (talkcontribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic.

It's an online encyclopedia. Something has to be noteworthy to warrant an article. When you say "share," do you basically mean advertise? Wikipedia really isn't for advertising. Bus stop (talk) 23:57, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
