About editing

[edit]

Hello, sir/madam, I added an article Video Download Studio on wikipedia several days ago, and the admin notice me:

{It is proposed that this article be deleted because of the following concern:

       Non-notable shareware.

If you can address this concern by ''improving'', ''copyediting'', ''sourcing'', ''renaming'' or ''merging'' the page, please edit this page and do so.}

So, I want to rename''Wikipedia:Disambiguation'' it, change the Headline Name(Video Download Studio) as VDS, which is a three-letter abbreviation. So the question is how to rename Video Download Studio as VDS? I can't rename through "Edit" page. Thank you in advance! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Leftward (talkcontribs)

That notice is letting you know that the subject may not be notable enough for inclusion in Wikipedia. You can fix this by including reliable references. Dismas|(talk) 02:31, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also, you may want to read Wikipedia:Notability (software). It's not a policy but it does have some helpful advice. Dismas|(talk) 02:34, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's a standardised notice (added by a regular user, not an admin). Only autoconfirmed accounts can move (other word for rename) pages but renaming to VDS is not an option in this case. VDS already exists and should stay. I don't know your connection to the software but Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations may also be relevant. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:39, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict with above) Take a look at Help:Move; however, you will need to make 3 more edits and wait 2 more days before you can actually allowed to move anything.
I'm going to be blunt here -- the article has far, FAR worse problems than its title, which itself conforms to Wikipedia's naming guidelines and does not need to be changed. Changing the title will do absolutely nothing to help save the article. Instead you need to fix the problems that plague the article if you want any chance at survival. The main problems that I see are:
  • The article is an advertisement for its subject, and merely contains a list of features. Wikipedia is not a place to advertise. (There is a way to write about features and such without advertising, but this cannot be done without reliable sources; see below.)
  • You have absolutely no reliable sources. None of the facts in the article can be verified, and notability -- defined as "being mentioned in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" -- cannot be established. The links in "references" are merely appearances on random file-download websites. You could have written that descriptive text, or uploaded the file to the website; in any case they are not substantial mentions in reliable, independent sources, and therefore the links you provide are essentially useless. And no, reviews from random users on those websites are also not permissible. Reliable sources in this field are articles on tech news websites, not blogs or file download websites. If you had reliable sources, you could write about what the software could do in a more neutral manner, which is impossible to achieve using non-independent sources.
In short, unless you start finding reliable sources to verify facts in the article, it will be deleted because there is absolutely no way to establish notability, which goes hand-in-hand with verification. I probably come off as hostile, but I hope you realize now that you have your work cut out for you if you want this article to stick. Xenon54 (talk) 02:43, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Admiral Farragut2.jpg and File:Thomas Rowlandson - Vaux-Hall - Dr. Johnson, Oliver Goldsmith, Mary Robinson, et al.jpg (both hosted on Commons, but with local pages because they're FPs) are in the speedy deletion category, even though there's absolutely nothing on these file pages that should put them there. For example, the Rowlandson image has nothing except {{FeaturedPicture}}, which obviously isn't up for speedy, and that template transcludes only {{Imbox}}, which also isn't up for speedy. Farragut has these two templates plus {{Picture of the day}} and the transcluded {{POTDlink}}, neither of which are up for speedy either. Any idea what could be going on here? I've purged both files' caches, and there are no other images currently up for speedy. Nyttend (talk) 02:59, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think I figured it out. Both files are listed at CAT:CSD under their redirect names, File:Adm2.jpg and File:03193u Vauxhall Johnson, Mary Robinson, and so on 6.jpg. Both were marked as {{db-f2}}. Maybe some dummy edits to the redirects will fully purge.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:30, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, I was fooled: both redirects are still marked as db-f2 but only in edit mode. They appear as redirects until you click edit this page. Maybe that's because db-f2 is normally only placed in images, so when you place it on a redirect something about the code doesn't allow it to display as a normal speedy template?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:36, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I deleted the redirects and they disappeared from the category. I don't know why this happened but I don't think we needed the redirects and I didn't want someone to mistakenly delete the actual image pages. Rmhermen (talk) 06:23, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wierd - the redirect still functions but also claims to have been deleted. Hopefully it is a caching issue at this point. Rmhermen (talk) 06:25, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bot or not Bot?

[edit]

Can someone take a look at edits by 71.244.123.63 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). All the edits by this IP claim to be "...Bot edit" in their edit summaries. Can a bot appear as an IP user, or is this some funky vandalism? Astronaut (talk) 05:17, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Some Stupids are destroying my article

[edit]

I created one article about an industrial conglomerate in Bangladesh, and many users were developing the article, but one stupid person has semi protected my page, and other users are complaining to me that they cannot edit the article any more. Please Help me, I want the Wikipedia users to develop my article. Suggest me what can I do, to let other users access my article and keep that stupid person away from my article. Tahmid.zaman 06:41, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

User is probably referring to Zaman Group of Industries. -- wiooiw (talk) 06:35, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the reason, the decision to semi-protect the article is fair. I would recommend you urge the previous editors to register for Wikipedia so that their contributions could not only be attributed to them, but also so that any potential vandals could be kept in check. Also, please remember the following Wikipedia policies and reasoning: Assume good faith, overall Wikiquette, and a section on why articles are semi-protected, . Please do not refer to fellow editors as "stupids" because the decision to semiprotect the article was likely a good faith move to protect it against vandalism. - Ryankiefer (talk) 06:50, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
To edit the article you have to be auto-confirmed. All they need is an account about 4 days old and 10 edits. They can also request to be confirmed here which gives them all the abilities of a auto-comfirmed user just without the waiting period. It could be worse if the article was Fully protected so don't get too frustrated over this. wiooiw (talk) 07:00, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The article in question has no sources - excepting the promotional output of the subject of the article. No notability, or verifiability. Article should be deleted with haste. Weakopedia (talk) 09:20, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Need some help creating a new article

[edit]

Hello guys,

There is no article on distributed operating system on Wikipedia. Searching for an article on wikipedia for distributed operating system redirects to single system image which is totally irrelavent. So I took about two months to create this article on Distributed operating systems and finally published it(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_Operating_System). But still when I search for an article on distributed operating systems I am able to get the old one(http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Distributed_operating_system&redirect=no). Can some one help me in resolving this. The only difference is lower case O in Operating and lower case S in Systems. Can some one merge the old one with the new one please.

Also there are hundreds of links on wikipedia which need hyperlink to the article. If I am able to collect all those can someone edit those ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ksudhir01 (talkcontribs) 07:31, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I see that the article has been moved to Distributed operating system after you posted here.
The index used by the Wikipedia "Search" box is updated once a day (Help:Searching#Delay in updating the search index), so this will have sorted itself out by tomorrow.
To find articles that mention the phrase "Distributed operating system" use the "Search" box or click this link Search. I've looked at the first few, and they already had a link to the old redirect, so by magic they now link to the new article. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:38, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Missing information

[edit]

I would be glad to know how I can send you or incorporate a brief article about my school. Currently the schools name is mentioned on Wikipedia but the information is missing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anthony Muriithi (talkcontribs) 08:14, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Your first article. If you'd like help going through the steps below, try the Article Wizard.
  1. Ensure that you have an account and you are logged in. If you don't have an account, create one
  2. Make sure the subject is notable enough to have their own article
  3. Find references
  4. Make sure no article on the subject exists under a different title by typing the subject into the search box to the left (←) and clicking 'Search'
  5. Type the page name in the search box to the left (←) and click 'Go'
  6. Click 'Create this page'
  7. Create the article, including all your references, making sure you adhere to the Manual of Style and our article layout guidelines
  8. Be aware that Wikipedia deletes thousands of new articles for failing to adhere to our policies and guidelines. New articles by new users are at extra risk of deletion, due to new users' unfamiliarity with our rules. Consider gaining experience by editing existing articles before attempting to create new ones. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:20, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What John of Reading said is spot on. In the full email you can see that what appear to be Wikipedia links actually link to a different website. It's simply another form of spam, impersonating Wikipedia.
There are several threads that refer to this one, as John of Reading's reply dealt with the issue well. Could I suggest linking to this one using

Glossary of terms for ...

[edit]

I am new to Wikipedia. I want to set up a Glossary of Terms for our MachineControOnline section where we will build, via wiki open source, industry terms/jargon. I am not sure how to set this up and then ask our industry to contribute.

Thanks for any help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MachineControlOnline (talkcontribs) 11:38, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ouch. The OP's userpage says "MachineControlOnline is a reference website designed to promote the advancement of the positioning industry. This includes the collaboration and connection of land surveying, civil engineering, GIS, 3D Machine Control, Telematics that connect-manage and analyze in field processes. These include assets such as trucks, people, equipment, grade and utility machines and also the data flow that is imperative to this function. The positioning industry and its technology brings new terms and processes. We at MachineControlOnline.com have chose Wikipedia as a reference source for a glossary of terms and overview of procedures. Wikipedia format will open this development to the public." Is this a valid Wikipedia email?

[edit]

This seems very virus-slanted and would like to confirm. Not only did I receive this email, someone else in our department received the same email - but with my email address in the "To:" line. Explain that - short of this person being on a blind copy, but even that would have stripped my address. If this is valid, please advise and I'll proceed with canceling the confirmation steps.

I have received two of these emails today so I was glad to find this article. One was addressed to my correct email address, another was addressed to someone on a completely different address. But it was very difficult finding this page to confirm that this was a phishing email. Can Wikipedia not put up an easier contact system for people to confirm validity of messages? Not to do so makes your users vulnerable when they are targeted by criminals.

Report an user

[edit]

I wanted to report an user, who post his opnion on jews and immigrants into several articles where it does not belong to my mind. To give an example: In the article about the Six Families of Berlin gang he posted the statement: "44 percent of the migrants have no qualifications. 20 percent of their sons and daughters are unable to complete school. 80 percent of Berlin´s serial offender have a migration background. Germany´s average IQ of 104 declined to 99" (which has been deleted by me). In the article Antisemitism in Europe he posted the opinion that "The propaganda of Jewish groups, politicians, radical leftists, Muslims and the German media is overwhelming and throw all streams in one pot." and that "The greater danger is the growing group of migrants and their disaffected descendants" http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Antisemitism_in_Europe&action=historysubmit&diff=367679845&oldid=366244015 (which has not been deleted so far) To my mind this users edits are not a work of scholarship, but of advocacy. Where can I report him?-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 15:19, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, in dispute resolution, the first step is raising your concerns directly with the user. Have you asked them about their edits? TNXMan 15:24, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, I have not, because I do have a migration background and I really do not believe a person like this would pay attention to my opinion.-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 15:33, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What should I ask him anyway? "Why do you hold right wing opinions?", "Why do you post them in any article"?. The point is not one single article, but that he is doing it over and over again.-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 15:36, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You could ask him "do you have reliable texts which back up the statements you have added" or you could say "your statements appear to be based on opinion and as such, are likely inappropriate to a Wikipedia article". There are any number of ways to approach it. The first approach is to remind people of Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and to point out where their edits run contrary to those policies. If that doesn't work, there are other steps one could take. --Jayron32 15:40, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I really do not feel comfortable talking to people, who hate people like me just because of their ethnic origins. Couldn't somebody else do this? Most of his statements are not backed by the sources he gives (also his sorcus include a lot of tabloid papers).-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 15:43, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Geopolitical ethnic and religious conflicts#User:Kalt wie stahl and racial hatred in Germany. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:59, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I think I am not going to comment there (unless you want me to), because I think this user comments speak for themselves. Also I really feel uncomfortable talking with persons like him, who hate me. So I probably would not be able to meqaningful contribute to the argument anyway.-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 16:04, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's off topic but I have trouble taking off my teacher's hat, and once you know this, you'll know it forever. "An" goes before words that start with a vowel SOUND, not a vowel. So it is "a user," since "user" does not start with a vowel sound. An opposite example, it's "an hour," even though "hour" starts with a consonant, because it's pronounced as a vowel.--162.83.139.249 (talk) 03:33, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving

[edit]

How do you modify {{Talkarchivenav}} so that it fits on one of my archive pages? This is what it currently looks like. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 16:19, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

{{Talkarchivenav}} only works for archive pages called "Archive 1", "Archive 2", etc. (see the top of Talk:Anarchy/Archive 2 for its normal usage). For pages with a different numbering scheme like yours, you'll have to use a different template, such as {{Archive-nav}}. --Mysdaao talk 18:32, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but now this page is acting up; there's no archive 4 in sight. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 21:21, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
{{Archive-nav}} always displays a link to the next archive page, even if it doesn't exist. There's nothing you can do to prevent the template from displaying a redlink. You can add "next=3¢", so at least the redlink will point to the correct page. --Mysdaao talk 12:30, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have any other archive templates that solves this redlink problem? :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 15:52, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not that I know of. You have an unusual system for naming your archive pages, so I don't think you're going to find a template that works exactly how you want it. You could always create your own template, or simply create the links you want on the top of each of your archive pages. --Mysdaao talk 13:58, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to use wikipedia to browse art images, in near-full-screen size, in sequence?

The value in this is in being able to easily discover paintings I have not seen before....like going to an art gallery, virtually. I think this is a valid encylopedic usage of wikipedia.

For example, clicking on "French Post Impressionists (images)", the user would then be presented with a painting from this genre, almost full screen, and links for "previous" and "next" to get to the next image in sequence.

If wikipedia does not support this, and does not plan to in the future....is it permissible to download all art images from wikipedia, for personal use?

Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shuffledy (talkcontribs) 20:01, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting idea. This may be a more useful use of Wikipedia's sister site, Wikimedia Commons, which is more designed as an image resource than an encyclopedia. Perhaps you could propose this usage over there... --Jayron32 20:10, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I expect that they were telling the truth when they 'purported' to be a Wikipedia editor, but you should understand that all Wikipedia editors (including myself) are just volunteers and not officially associated with Wikipedia. If he told you his Wikipedia username you could contact him on his talk page which will be at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:USERNAME. If you are unable to contact them in this fashion, and the email address definitely doesn't work then there is nothing more we can do to help. Also, in future, please do not post other people's email addresses without their permission. AJCham 23:59, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.
