I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:05, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Should publisher of a research paper be wikilinked in main text?[edit]

Hi,

In the biofield energy healing article there's the section "Theories about..." with the text "how Drew Leder hypothesises in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine[9] that" where there's a wikilik for the Journal. I think the wikilink for the journal should be in a footnote since the article is about healing and the journal only publishes papers rather doing healing research - what do you think?

Thanks,

Adrian-from-london (talk) 03:16, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. As a reader of the article, I might be interested in the Journal and want to know more about it, so a link is justified. It would help me know if it's a major journal or how reputable it is. If I were reading the article to find sources for a project that I was working on, it would help in my research. Also, it doesn't go against WP:OVERLINK. I see nothing wrong with it. Dismas|(talk) 03:32, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

TCP/IP & ISO/OSI Model or Protocol??[edit]

Hello Wikipedia, I was asked a question that why ISO/OSI is called a model but TCP/IP is not? I tried but could not satisfy my teacher. As far I know protocol is a set of rules and model is defined using layers. Both TCP/IP & ISO/OSI can be defined on the basis of protocols and layers. Kindly help me to get a precise answer. Thank You, Aditya —Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.227.241.123 (talk) 03:34, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried the computing section of Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in answering knowledge questions there; this help desk is only for questions about using Wikipedia. For your convenience, here is the link to post a question there: click here. I hope this helps.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:58, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Wikipedia BOOKS (WIKIBOOKS)[edit]

To, Whom so ever it may concern..

Sir / Ma'am...

I had seen the Engineering Section of WIKIBOOKS and found almost Zero quantity of books. The technical books related to their specific sections are having almost 1 or 2 completed books for the complete subject refrence. I had a quite good collection of Technical Books (in pdf format) and i am willing to share the books with WIKIBOOKS for the easy use of frequent WIKIBOOK USERS. As i am also a frequent user here so i want to be a part of users technical refrence.

Give me a possible solution so that i can share or send my books for building up the WIKIBOOKS Library. Please reply me on my email address if you think it is useful for you.

Yours

This help desk is generally for questions about using Wikipedia. We are a sister project to Wikibooks but a different site. I think your question would be better asked at Wikibooks:Reading room/Assistance, though someone may be able to help here (we are a much larger staffed project, and have many cross-users from other projects). Note that I have removed your telephone number and email address and removed that information from public view in this page's history. We do not answer questions by email or telephone and posting your contact information here is not a good idea.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:25, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone can update it to the current date, you can do so too if you're willing to. Juze 07:39, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Autoarchive talk page[edit]

Hi, I've followed some instructions from User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo and User:Allstarecho/AutoArchive to autoarchive content on my talk page here User_talk:Darigan - Could somebody that know's a bit about this take a look at my talk page to ensure I've done it correctly - Thanks. Darigan (talk) 13:04, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looks OK to me. Just a note that the bot runs once a day-ish, so you may not see any archiving for a bit. TNXMan 13:49, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yay! Cheers for looking at it for me Tnxman Darigan (talk) 13:50, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright[edit]

Hi

I want to upload a sports team logo that I have permission to use, but it needs to have a copyright so that it cannot be used elsewhere without permission. What license should I use to acompany the image?

Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bandoza (talkcontribs) 16:22, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think {{Logo fur}} is what you need. TNXMan 16:24, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And {{Non-free logo}}. Permission that is restricted to Wikipedia only is not sufficient so you will have to use it under the non-free content criteria instead. – ukexpat (talk) 18:03, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

login / username help[edit]

Hello,

I recently made a username, KungFuJonny, and directly after confirming the account, I accidentally cancelled it in the same swoop. Now I'm not able to restore the username, KungFuJonny when I'm the one who originally created it.

my email is [details removed]

It is REALLY important that I have the same username as my email.

How do I resolve this issue? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.15.27.87 (talk) 16:48, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not include contact details in your questions. We are unable to provide answers by any off-wiki medium and this page is highly visible across the internet. The details have been removed, but if you want them to be permanently removed from the page history, please email this address.
Accounts cannot be canceled or deleted. You don't need to register an e-mail address to access your account. As long as you remember your password, just log in. The username and password is case-sensitive, and your username is "Kungfujonny", so make sure the capitalization is correct. --Mysdaao talk 17:10, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki pages reffed in the references section[edit]

A wiki page aint a reference, correct? But what to do - make it an internal link with double brackets inside the text body - sure - but definitely delete from the reference section in any case, correct? - or maybe not. Opinion please. MarkDask 17:08, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Reliable sources#Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources says:
  • "Although Wikipedia articles are tertiary sources, Wikipedia contains no systematic mechanism for fact checking or accuracy. Thus Wikipedia articles (or Wikipedia mirrors) are not reliable sources for any purpose."
What to do? Start by telling us the article(s) you have in mind, if any. There are potentially many different ways to fix a problem on Wikipedia, and the "best" way may depend on the context. --Teratornis (talk) 17:40, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, maybe the referenced information should be tagged or removed if a replacement reference cannot be found. Maybe the other Wikipedia article already has a reference which can be copied. We need to see the case to evaluate it. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:06, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - I came across a case 2 days ago on Community/cleanup but didn't mark it. I've come across several cases in the past but wasn't sure how to deal with them, thats why I asked. MarkDask 03:15, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Without specifics I will only say that there is always something better to do than leaving it, but sometimes it's worse to remove it without doing anything else than to just leave it. Leaving it can send a signal to others who come by and may investigate what to do about this case. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:27, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the opinions - better to leave it than simply delete it - agreed. MarkDask 09:40, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I lost my login.[edit]

I tried to log in under my standard username, Kateri87, and it wouldn't allow any of the passwords I regularly use. I requested to have a new password sent to me, but when I checked my various e-mail accounts it wasn't there. Who can I talk to to find out what the problem is? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.88.96.210 (talk) 16:55, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Did you provide an email address for the account? If you did, you should be able to send a new password to that email address. If you didn't provide an email address, bad luck; you won't be able to gain access to your account. However, you can create another account, and using that account, edit your old account's userpage to mention that you no longer use it. Before creating the new account, please read up on Wikipedia's username policy, to make sure your account complies. Hope this has helped. --Mysdaao talk 17:15, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Your account does appear to have an email address associated with it, so the password reset email would have been sent to the email you specified when you signed up. Check the spam filters, Junk Email folders, and the like to make sure it has not been flagged as junk. ArakunemTalk 17:46, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted Image Peter Kilmartin[edit]

I've been trying to track why the Image of Peter Kilmartin was deteted. We have email confirmation of permission from the Rhode Island General Assembly to use the image as follows:

Subject: permission from ri general assembly Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2010 17:05:10 -0500 From: Larry Berman <email address removed> To: <email address removed>

November 10, 2010 To whom it may concern: Regarding http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PeterKilmartin.jpg, on behalf of the Rhode Island General Assembly, you have permission to use the legislative photo of Representative Peter Kilmartin, our state’s Attorney general-elect. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Larry Berman Communications Director Rhode Island House of Representatives

Please direct us on how to get this resolved. Innapoy (talk) 19:37, 12 November 2010 (UTC) Innapoy (talk) 19:37, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please be patient - it can take a few days for OTRS to process permissions. When it has been processed the image will be undeleted. – ukexpat (talk) 20:50, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the email addresses from this post to deter spammers. -- John of Reading (talk) 22:02, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Page hijack/usurpation[edit]

If a user goes to an existing article, blanks it and enters new article text which is entirely unrelated to the original (as here), this is (to me at least) a Bad Thing. Having reverted, which policy doc should I direct the editor to? It seems to me that this is some form of hijacking or usurpation, but I can't find a suitable policy page where such practice is discouraged, other than WP:USURPTITLE which assumes that a page move occurs first, which wasn't done in this instance. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:17, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think the best idea is to point the user to WP:DISAMBIG and let them know there is a correct way and an incorrect way to create an article that has a title already in use. They went about incorrectly, but perhaps we can help them understand how to do it the right way. TNXMan 20:23, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help! The instructions for reverting don't match up with what I'm seeing on the actual site. Some vandal, today, screwed up the Reinhardt University page. Can somone revert it back to the Rivertorch edits. They were correct.

Thanks. Too, how can we warn this vandal to stop.

Carsonmc (talk)

Actually, I think I figured it out. Not sure I noted it correctly. But page appears to be back to what it was to be. Carsonmc (talk)
Yup you got it. – ukexpat (talk) 21:41, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding warning the vandal, you can use the warning templates on his or her talk page. {{subst:uw-vandalism1}}, {{subst:uw-vandalism2}}, etc. up to vandalism-4. The number is based on how many warnings the user has previously received as well as the severity of the vandalism. This vandal, however, has already been warned with a level one template. Cite an image[edit]

How does one cite a Wikipedia image? I tried going to Special:Cite and entering the title, File:Mengerova houba.jpg, but I got nothing. -- Bk314159 (Talk to me and find out what I've done) 22:58, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would imagine that is because it's on Commons, but I'm not 100% sure. I suppose I would just cite it manually. Try reading Wikipedia:Citing Wikipedia for help on this. There are also outside websites that can help you with the format for citing images... GorillaWarfare talk 00:54, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see now! I looked into it a little more, and it looks like Commons has its own version of Special:Cite. Try this. GorillaWarfare talk 00:59, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. -- Bk314159 (Talk to me and find out what I've done) 01:40, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Note that it cites the file page and gives a permanent URL to the current version of the file page. If a new image is later uploaded then the new image will be displayed at the "permanent URL" in the citation. Wikipedia does the same as commons when the image is at Wikipedia, for example [1]. If the given page name is not at Wikipedia then nothing happens regardless of the namespace. It would have been better with an error message. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:06, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
