Citing the Same Source Multiple Times[edit]

This is rather a technical question. As it can be seen here, reference number 5 & 6 are the same. That's because I didn't know how to use number 5 multiple times in different locations. So, how can I do that?

Thank you! -- And Rew 03:49, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners#Same reference used more than once, or alternatively, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (footnotes)#Reference name (naming a ref tag so it can be used more than once). Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:52, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My Watchlist And Why Some Of The Bytes Are Bolded[edit]

I know what the +n and -n is, but why is it bolded sometimes?Curb Chain (talk) 04:20, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the bite count is bolded when the changed number of bytes is greater than 500. Tiggerjay (talk) 04:22, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Help:Watching pages#How to read a watchlist says: "Each line shows details of each edit: whether minor (m), whether made by a bot (b), the time, a link to the page, a link to the difference ("diff") made by the edit in question, a link to the page history ("hist"), the editor's user name or IP address, the increase (green) or decrease (red) in the number of bytes, e.g. (+76), (-490) or, if over 500, in bold: (+794), (-2,412), and the edit summary." --Teratornis (talk) 05:43, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikilinking to users and files on the Commons[edit]

How do you wikilink to a specific User or a specific File on the Commons. For example EXAMPLE (EXAMPLE) only shoots to a Wikipedia userpage; how would I wikilink instead to that user's Commons userpage?--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 09:19, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Example at Commons gives you Example at Commons. See Help:Interwiki linking. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:25, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks John.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 09:27, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of POV problems?[edit]

Hi -- I'm assuming there's probably a place where all pages tagged with POV problems are listed. I may be able to assist with editing these pages, but I can't find the list. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks, --Jp07 (talk) 09:29, 24 June 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Google searches[edit]

Given the limitations of Wikipedia's search function, I use Google for more complex Wikipedia searches, and have the site specific search saved as:- http://www.google.com/custom?sa=Google+Search&domains=en.wikipedia.org&sitesearch=en.wikipedia.org This now produces the following error message:-

We're sorry...
... but your computer or network may be sending automated queries.
To protect our users, we can't process your request right now.
See Google Help for more information.

Google Help is, predictably, no help at all. Other Google pages just keep suggesting I use Google Chrome rather than IE as a browser.
Is there another way to get site specific searches of Wikipedia on IE?
Arjayay (talk) 09:32, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A workaround is to include your desired search in the link. As an example, I typed "The quick brown fox" into my sandbox, did a preview to see this link and then clicked the link to do the search. Messy, but it gets around Google's unhelpful behaviour. There's more discussion at the Village Pump. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:39, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You can also add Wikipedia as a search provider, I think. Unfortunately, I don't have access to IE at the moment, so I can't test it, but see this page.--Kateshortforbob talk 09:41, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks both - for the moment, the following link is working

Have you tried the Miscellaneous section of Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in answering knowledge questions there; this help desk is only for questions about using Wikipedia. For your convenience, here is the link to post a question there: click here. I hope this helps. TNXMan 15:07, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Website Inquiry[edit]

I need to know the Author who created the page/listing of a certain page that is unauthorized on your website. Please email me back with your contact information so we can contact the author of this page. My email is <blanked>

Kind regards,

John D. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.232.16.203 (talk) 16:07, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but there is no one author of a page. Wikipedia is a joint effort of several volunteer editors. Furthermore, if an article is properly sourced, there is no need for official authorization. You may want to see this page for more info. TNXMan 16:12, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also see WP:OWN. There is no such thing as "unauthorized". --ColinFine (talk) 19:05, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but exactly what page is it? Also, we cannot send anything to your email because providing personal information is against the wikipedia policy. We will respond on your talk page once you provide us with the article title. Also, remember to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). Thanks! Image loaded but does not appear[edit]

Resolved

I have created & saved a new page, a bio called "Fred Chester Bond," on my user page, & it looks okay EXCEPT the image does not appear. The link to the photo works fine when I try it otherwise. Imat6441 (talk) 17:03, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that the page Fred_Chester_Bond has successfully been moved into the encyclopedia and the image problems resolved by user: Demiurge1000. CaptRik (talk) 17:56, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PDF availibility of an older article version[edit]

I was wondering if there is any way to create a PDF of an older version of an article than the current one? I'd need an original PDF of the "Wikipedia" entry from January 29th 2011, 14:22. Thanks in advance! maja färggren 17:19, 24 June 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maja färggren (talkcontribs)

Sorry, you can't. Island Monkey talk the talk 17:21, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you can. Find the version in the page history, for example http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia&oldid=410687146, and click "Download as PDF" under Print/export in the left panel. Note however that if the page makes any transclusions then you will se the current version of the transcluded page. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:55, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. What would be necessary to have Wikipedia transclude the versions of the transcluded pages as of the date of the old version that you are looking at?Naraht (talk) 21:14, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It worked! Thanks a million!! maja färggren 19:34, 25 June 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maja färggren (talkcontribs)

A request from NPS staff.[edit]

I received a request on my discussion page from the Park Interpreter at Oregon Caves National Monument. Obviously, there is some misunderstanding but I don't think the opportunity should be blown off. However, I think this should be handled by someone with a better understanding of the issues than myself and some tact. Anyone who feels qualified can respond on his/hers talk page. –droll [chat] 18:31, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

where do I go (place or even just a user) to get some help with making a bot to do some data gathering and analysis?[edit]

I would like to scan the DYK archives and compile a list of DYK articles, submitters, and hooks. I can specify the info I need and how much, and do some analyis afterward, but would like help from a bot maker to get the scrape done.

Also, if they have the ability to do some simple checks on users as well (join date, number of edits, admin flag) that would be useful as well. I'm thinking a little bit like the person who did the RFA data compilation. Will read out to him, but not sure if he likes me.

Any advise on person or "other desk" to go for help?

section link[edit]

 Done

I am trying to provide an internal Wikilink to section 3.2 of Help:Wikipedia:_The_Missing_Manual/Collaborating_with_Other_Editors/Resolving_Content_Disputes. But when I type excess detail, the link goes to the page, but not the section. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help. Kilmer-san (talk) 23:23, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Try using an internal link, this- excess detail, gives this- excess detail. Also, remember to end your nowiki. Ryan Vesey (talk) 23:34, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not familiar with this application. Can you give me a link to the application? I will look it over and see if I can help. I also don't know what I will need to know, but maybe you could link me to a couple (or all if it is not many) of the articles you wanted to use. Ryan Vesey (talk) 23:43, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I realized that the pages are included in the urls of your post. Are there any pages that are not included? Maybe they are the problem. Ryan Vesey (talk) 23:45, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The function is under "Print/Export" in the left pane and is called "Create a book". I'd appreciate any help Dalsegnomusic (talk) 23:51, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I got it to work and I think I have a theory of why it didn't for you. User:Ryan Vesey/Books/List of number one albums here is my page for the book, you can download it if you like. It is not in order, and if you would like a different order or more pages added and you still can't get it to work for yourself contact me again and I will redo it for you. Here is my theory. If you add the 5 articles to the book, you must click "Show book" from a newly refreshed article. I once clicked it from the fourth article I added, and it did not show all 5 of the articles in the book. I assume you clicked show book from the wrong article. Ryan Vesey (talk) 23:58, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I will try that. I appreciate your help. Dalsegnomusic (talk) 00:12, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
