Category for Cuban American[edit]

My nephew Matt Timmons stars in the famous Disney show Suite life on Deck as "Woody" He would be considered Cuban-American His mother is Cuban

-Thank You — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.183.18.150 (talk) 02:25, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you are suggesting that Matthew Timmons be made the topic of a standalone article, you will have to provide reliable sources (such as newspaper or magazine articles) discussing him. If you can demonstrate that he satisfies any of the criteria at Wikipedia:Notability (people), only then could there be an article about him. Font color?[edit]

In Wikipedia:Reference desk archive/Humanities/October 2005, there are two stretches of text which are in a green font color. (They run, respectively, from how many muslims are there in the world to Does anyone know the name of this cartoon from the 1980s? and BIOGRAPHY OF PUNKAJ MULLICK to Countess?.) However, I don't see any "font color" tags appearing where the color changes start, so I don't know what is generating the color changes. Can anyone explain it? --Metropolitan90 (talk) 03:34, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It appears to be something with the {{User}} template. Hmm. these edits seem to have fixed it. As for why it happened - I have no clue. Avicennasis @ 04:39, 17 Tishrei 5772 / 04:39, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This page is for questions about using Wikipedia. Please consider asking this question at the Entertainment reference desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link and ask away. You could always try searching Wikipedia for an article related to the topic you want to know more about. I hope this helps.-- Obsidin Soul 07:39, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I think what he is saying is he wants the article (whichever it may be) that deals with Germany and World Cup to say that Germany has never won the World Cup in its current form, so the proper place would be that article's talk page. Though, he is wrong given that the Germany that exists today is the same one as "West Germany", or the Federal Republic of Germany. Hi!! May I ask again why my article entitled "Fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma of bone" has been deleted? It was posted yesterday October 14. I think I didn't really understand what happened. Please see the entries ARTICLE DRAFT on Help Desk. --93.146.10.122 (talk) 07:22, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Clafo--93.146.10.122 (talk) 07:22, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Aside from your post here, you have no other edits. As far as I know the article "Fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma of bone" in the mainspace or draft space has never existed. Were you logged in when you created the page? Under what username were you editing?-- Obsidin Soul 07:39, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)There is no record that any such article ever existed, so I assume that you didn't save it. Perhaps you clicked "Show preview" but didn't go on to click "Save page"? Or was there a CAPTCHA process which you perhaps didn't complete? It will be easier to keep track of the situation if you stick to using your registered account Clafo; neither of the 2 IP addresses which you have used recently, 93.146.10.122 or 93.146.6.158, show any edits other than here on the help desk. Which of the 3 (or something else) do you think you were using when you tried to create the article? - David Biddulph (talk) 07:42, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can visit the language section of the Reference Desk and ask a specific question or you could visit our articles on Passive voice and Active voice or you could put the two expressions in quotes into Google or maybe Google Books and look at selections from the numerous results.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 08:55, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

 – Tag removed and article copy edited.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:31, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have added a photo to the Henri Jean-Baptiste Victoire Fradelle entry. I believe the entry is finished now (subtitles wouldn't mean much in such a short entry especially as it is not really chronological). Could you therefore please remove the Wikipedia "warning" box at the very top. Many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Francois grosjean (talkcontribs) 13:46, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The tag was put in by the creator of the article in August. Based on improvements since, I've removed the tag. The article could use some copy edits, but I don't see any justification for the tag. I fixed the image you added (you shouldn't have used a (non-existent) infobox for it, and it created a large box).--Bbb23 (talk) 13:56, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your kind help with this. Thank heavens there are good Samaritans like you on Wikipedia. Merci! Francois grosjean (talk) 19:31, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. A box was put up asking for more inline citations. I have reorganized the references so that they are now attached to the specific information they refer to. I have also added several more references. I do hope this is sufficient and that you can remove the box. Thank you for your help.Francois grosjean (talk) 07:15, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There has been a major change. See Wikipedia:Secure server. Please specify the url where you log in to the secure server and an example url where you are no longer logged in when you think you should be. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:20, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I normally log into Wikipedia on the secure server at https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin with Also log me in to other wikis of the Wikimedia Foundation selected. Then following the link on the main page to (say) Commons ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page ) I formerly found I was also logged in there (and with a secure https connection). Now it takes me to Commons but not logged-in (likewise to Wiktionary and the other-language Wikipedias). --catslash (talk) 23:32, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
https://secure.wikimedia.org is the old secure server mentioned at Wikipedia:Secure server. It has its own login system. I don't think you should be using it in most cases now. It appears (I think it's intentional) that cross-wiki links from the old secure server now go to the new secure system where url's simply start with https: intead of http:, for example https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page instead of http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. Commons on the old secure server is at https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/wiki/Main_Page. If you stay away from https://secure.wikimedia.org and use secure Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page then you should only have to log in once. Title change[edit]

I want to eliminate "Old Nevada" from the title of my piece so it will simply read "Jessi Winchester." How do I do that since it already seems to be on the Internet as "Old Nevada / Jessi Winchester?" Folks trying to search for Jessi Winchester won't be able to do it with the Old Nevada tacked on to it. Thanks so much for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.49.26.223 (talk) 19:06, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The draft is a subpage in another user's user space, at User:Old nevada/Jessi Winchester. The user concerned Old nevada (talk · contribs) asked a similar question here on 12th September and got answers then, and asked again on 18th September and received further answers then, but apparently hasn't done anything in response to the replies given. You can find the previous answers in the archives of this page. - David Biddulph (talk) 19:43, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have to admit I have been a bit confused by the references. It should be made clear what medium the reference constitutes of (some of them seem to be television or radio programs). It would in my opinion be preferable to use a citation template for the references, but I admit they can be difficult to use if you haven't used them before. Can you perhaps write behind each reference what it is? For example, from
  • North Lake Tahoe Bonanza. Candidate criticizes lobbyists. Nick Baptista. August 7, 1996
it is not immediately clear to me, what kind of reference this is (an episode of a television show, a magazine?). Can you perhaps add some information to each source making this clear? At least I find this a bit confusing and it makes identifying a particular source complicated. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 20:12, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a newspaper; see here. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:28, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Title displays in a weird way[edit]

<i>''Yume Nikki''</i>

I tried moving the article, but it didn't do any good. Any idea why this happens and how to fix it? --Urzică (talk) 19:19, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not me, it displays as:

"Yume Nikki"

Probably a problem with your JavaScript. --J (t) 19:21, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved it back, as we don't surround the article title with quote marks. - David Biddulph (talk) 19:26, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There was a large discussion a little while back that determined what categories of articles should have the article title italicized using Template:Italic title. See WP:MOST and WP:ITALICTITLE for the relevant style guidelines. In this case, the italic title formatting is embedded in Template:Infobox video game. Rights of a liscense holder to describe a photo in an article[edit]

So, this is another question related to the sukkah one I asked earlier. I built the sukkah and am taking the photo to put in the article dealing with sukkot (as in plural of sukkah, not Sukkot :p). However I am wondering, as I am the source of the photo and it is my own work, what restrictions, if any, are placed on my description. I wish to say it is "a decorated North American non-kosher sukkah". I know it is not kasher because there are trees above it and the s'cach (the roof) has been used past Sukkot before, but can I say that? I know it is normally OR, but don't I technically count as a source? I'm honestly not sure here. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 17 Tishrei 5772 20:07, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is a long standing agreement (don't ask me to cite it :o ) that photo captions do not need to be sourced, but by themselves cannot be used as sources. The photo itself can be used as a source - "Flinders Petrie's sukkah stands under a tree" would be self-evident from the picture (which would I think be a primary source), but "Flinders Petrie's sukkah is in North America" could not be sourced to the photo caption.--Elen of the Roads (talk) 00:34, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think the salient idea would be the need to cite controversial material or material likely to be challenged. Would someone have a good reason to doubt or challenge the contention that the picture was taken in North America? If not, then there isn't a compelling need to "prove" it. Pictures can be controversial, and where challenged (or likely to be challenged) there needs to be some sort of discussion and vetting process. But if there isn't a good reason to challenge it, then I'm not sure there's a need to omit otherwise simple and uncontroversial statements. --Jayron32 00:42, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh no no, you misunderstand the part I am worried about. See I would only say it's in North America because all the others one in that article are in Israel; it is good to have one in another part of the world and from an angle other than the back of the sukkah (also with decoration). The part I am worried about is that I want to specifically state that it is not in compliance with the laws of Kashrut pertaining to sukkot (given that it is under a tree and the covering on the roof has been used past Sukkot). Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 18 Tishrei 5772 00:51, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Are those facts a) visible in the picture and b) uncontroversially not in compliance with the laws of Kashrut? Then you may be OK. The thing which would need to be cited, perhaps, is a reliable codification of the laws which state that the whole tree & roof covering thing is out of complaince, but as long as those things are obvious in the picture, you wouldn't have to cite that there's a tree in the picture! After all, no one would need a citation to prove that the tree is there! They may need one to prove that the tree makes the sukkah out of compliance, but that could also be made clear in the body text, and wouldn't need to be cited twice then. --Jayron32 01:17, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can a viewer of the photograph detect that it is not kosher? Is its un-kosher status visually detectable? For instance if the material used to cover the roof—the s'chach—was used a previous year, and if such prior use renders the sukkah un-kosher, but if this is not readily detectable in the photograph, then I would think there would be no reason to mention it. But if the temporary dwelling is under a tree, and it is apparent in the photograph that the temporary dwelling is under a tree, I think such a fact should be pointed out. But I think another question arises—why illustrate an article on sukkahs with a picture of a temporary dwelling that, strictly speaking is not a sukkah? Bus stop (talk) 01:21, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Is the phrase "non-kosher sukkah" uncontroversial. My guess (and it is just that) is that it is probably not and should, in that case, be avoided per WP:NPOV. --FormerIP (talk) 01:28, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. If it doesn't comply with all the rules, is it in fact a sukkah, or just a temporary dwelling in the style of a sukkah? Elen of the Roads (talk) 01:41, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Moving an archived discussion from VPR to VPRPP[edit]

Can I move an archived discussion from WP:VPR to WP:VPRPP and if so, what is the correct procedure to do this? The discussion in question is Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 76#Automatically archive all reference links when an article gets FA nominated. If I understand the advice at the top of VPRPP correctly, I can simply paste it to a new section at WP:VPRPP and give it the same heading as the one it had at WP:VPR. Is that correct? Archive bots[edit]

I love Wikipedia! But, there is a problem. I have discovered that there are archive bots on Wikipedia, that can keep user talk pages clean. I am asking if there is a bot that leaves a link to the page it moved the history too, but leaves a section alone. You can contact me here. Thank you very much!

Larsona 23:51, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Please edit your signature to contain a link to your user or talk page. That way you won't need to insert a link to same. I haven't a clue what you are asking though, it sounds like "is there a bot that moves the page but leaves the content in the same place", which obviously it can't be. --Elen of the Roads (talk) 00:29, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds to me like they want to archive their talk page but also leave a copy at the talk page which will be unaffected by the archiving. In which case, I don't see the point in archiving it at all. Unless you want a snapshot of how the page looked at a certain date/time, in which case that's what the page history is for. Dismas|(talk) 01:49, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I could be more specific. I want an archive bot that leaves a link to the page it sent all the data to, but I also want it to leave a specific section alone so I can apply a different rule to it. I offer a "Guideline Check" on my page, and I want it to leave that portion alone, yet still archive the rest. Is there such a bot that does that for you?
Thank you! Larsona (talk) 14:36, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind. I am just going to create seperate pages. That should do it! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Larsona (talkcontribs) 19:47, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Larsona (talk) 19:47, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The usual bot for archiving of user talk pages is described at User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo. It doesn't touch anything before the first sub-heading on the page, so it would not archive your "guideline check". There are various ways to link a talk page to its archives; I use {{Talk header}} to do it. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:02, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
