St Louis sculptor Bob Casilly death, includsion on recent deaths[edit]

Well loved and visionary sculptor Bob Casilly passed away this morning and he should be added to the index of recent deaths. Here is his Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Cassilly

Can somebody please add him to the index?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monstromo (talkcontribs) 00:03, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can you point us to a reliable source which provides that he died and states the cause of death?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:18, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are some news sites reporting his death, eg [1] [2] [3] [4]. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 00:22, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I searched myself before asking and only found blogs but I used the name provided which has one ess too few. I've added him to the list.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:51, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to have a sportspersons stats automatically updated[edit]

HI,

Just wondering if the is a bot or some other way of having a sportspersons stats updated from thier page at the relevant sporting associations database.

For example, can a MLB players infobox statistics be lionked to their statistics on www.mlb.com so that they do not need to be editied on a regular basis.Kreiny (talk) 03:52, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like an excellent idea to me. We already have bots that perform similar tasks, such as OKBot, which updates Alexa rankings in infoboxes. The place to suggest a new bot is Wikipedia:Bot requests. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 04:07, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you visit the page directly, for example by clicking the Peter Jetten link here, you will see that the extra message is not displayed. The extra message only appears when you reach the page via the "redirect" page, User:Campelik/Peter Jetten. I don't understand what I did wrong.[edit]

Can I update an entry about myself? I was filling in some gaps on my entry and it was deleted because of "vandalism". This modern world is just a waste of time... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Colin upton (talkcontribs) 05:55, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look at this. I think that they reverting editor was doing so mostly because your edit to the page caused a formatting issue which cause the userbox not to display correctly. Had it been me, I would have reverted without the vandalism tag, but I think he did so anyway just to make sure the template showed up on your talk page in the hopes you will be careful and preview before you post. Of slightly more importance is that if you are indeed the subject of the article, you should read and understand our conflict of interest policy before you make ANY more edits to this article. Thank you and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Trusilver 06:02, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is also possible that it was suspected to be vandalism because your edit included four "fuck" without giving a source. Vandals often add unsourced curse words to articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:05, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please help correcting Template:Player3[edit]

Please correct something in this template, because it doesn't convert kgs to lbs right. E. g., in Template:BC Žalgiris roster, even though Mantas Kalnietis is 3 kgs heavier than Ty Lawson, they both weigh 200 lbs, according to the conversion. And could anything be done that "kg" be shown as "kgs" and "lb" as "lbs"? Shakurazz (talk) 07:08, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed the rounding with this edit. For "kg/kgs" see International System of Units#Writing unit symbols and the values of quantities. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:29, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Two paragraphs of an article are only visible when logged on[edit]

In Rhinoceroses in ancient China#Rhinoceros hunting the last two paragraphs ("The earliest literary mention of hunting ..." and following blockquote) are only visible when logged on; when not logged on they are not shown (tested with Chrome and IE8, and also reported by another user). I can't see anything obviously wrong with the source, although I wonder if it is anything to do with the blockquotes. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this glitch? Alternative and most obvious answer to the riddle "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" see link; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hatter#The_Hatter.27s_riddle[edit]

Dear Sir/Madam,

In view of the fact that a reasonable or satisfactory answer to the riddle mentioned above has not been provided, by either author or any one else to date, I propose the following explanation, which to me seems more than obvious in view of its semantic/etymological implications: A RAVEN IS LIKE A WRITING DESK BECAUSE IT IS FULL OF PENS i.e., feathers or quills. See here the OED'S etymological explanation of the word 'pen':

Origin: Middle English (originally denoting a feather with a sharpened quill): from Old French penne, from Latin penna 'feather' (in late Latin 'pen').

Here's the OED link; http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/pen?rskey=xm0nrw&result=2

Please let me known if my solution to the riddle 'cuts any wood'.

Sincerely,

This help desk is intended for questions about using or editing Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, so your question doesn't really belong here.
A google search reveals many possible answers to the riddle, and as the article quotes, Carroll originally intended the riddle to have no answer at all. I have added the source for the answer that was mentioned in the article as a "recent suggestion" - it was published in 1914! -- John of Reading (talk) 09:23, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you were wondering whether your suggested solution could be added to our article then the answer is no. Wikipedia content is based on what has already been published by reliable sources. Given the large number of suggested solutions to this riddle, it would probably also have to be a solution which had received significant attention. The article only mentions three suggested solutions and they all have thousands of Google hits. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:55, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a rightsfree photo to the biography of ernst reijseger[edit]

Dear Wikipedians,

I have tried to upload a photo, wich I have 'bought' for publicity reasons from fotographer Bruno Bollaert. The image shows ernst reijseger, cellist and composer. His autorized biography has been uploaded with success in Dutch and Englisch, but the photo has been removed for the second time.. I thought i filled out all details about the photo. What am I doing wrong? Sincere greetings Fivestringbassclef — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fivestringbassclef (talkcontribs) 10:56, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • It was deleted from commons and subsequently delinked by a bot here. The bot used the summary "(Removing "Ernst_Reijseger.jpg", it has been deleted from Commons by Túrelio because: Copyright violation: File on flickr is Non-commercial and ND only." Only non-commercial use is not a valid license because it does not allow for free reuse. You could however upload to Wikipedia (instead of Commons) and claim fair use (please make sure you read about it before you do it). - Mgm|(talk) 11:26, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The reason for the photo's removal is given in this diff in the article's history. If in doubt, I sugesst that you talk to the relevant administrator on Commons. - David Biddulph (talk) 11:25, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why is my Article not showing?[edit]

I have just created an article and saved as instructed in the tutorials but when I search to find the article nothing appears in the search results. Is this correct and does each article have to go through a reviewing process before going 'live'?. If not why is my article not showing in the search results as I received no warnings regarding the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.162.158.172 (talk) 11:11, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your contribution record shows no article that you have created, so I assume that perhaps you didn't hit the "Save" button. Another possibility is that as a user who isn't auto-confirmed you may have had to go through a CAPTCHA process to save the article; did you see that stage? - David Biddulph (talk) 11:20, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can you say whether you were logged in or what the article was called? If you were logged in when you saved then we would not be able to find the page without knowing the username. If you were not logged in then it is still possible that your IP address had changed between saving it and posting here. IP addresses can change although you are on the same computer with the same Internet connection. It takes some time before newly created pages are indexed by the search function. Without more information it is impossible for us to say whether you saved something. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:23, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I did hit the 'Save' button and presumed that the article would now be able to be viewed by everyone. There was also a CAPTCHA process that appeared after I hit the 'save' button, and I entered the letters as instructed and hit 'save' again but still nothing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tony Rushmer (talkcontribs) 14:45, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

After saving, everybody can see the saved edit even if the search function hasn't indexed it yet. Special:Contributions/Tony Rushmer shows no saved edits besides the post here. As an administrator I can see the account has no deleted edits either. It appears something went wrong and it wasn't saved. After successfully saving a page you should be looking at the saved page with no edit box, like when you save a post here. Did that happen? You may have to try to save the page again. Hopefully you have a copy of the content. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:01, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can you tell us the exact title of the page you created? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 15:07, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have re-submitted the article, saved the page and saved again after the CAPTCHA process and it seemed to have worked. Not sure why it didn't before. Thanks for everyone's help and assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.162.158.172 (talk) 20:40, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

redirect/new article[edit]

I made a mistake in creating a new article. I created Industrial Revenue Bond without paying attention to the capitalization. A redirect page Industrial revenue bond already existed. I can delete my new page and add the content to the existing redirect page, or vice versa. I'm new to editing wikipedia and thought it best to ask for guidance.

--Dkdantastic (talk) 11:52, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, you don't want to do a copy-paste move, because then you can't track the changes in the page histories. What you would want to do is create an entry at WP:Requested moves. —Akrabbimtalk 12:07, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In general what you say is true, but in this case if he were to copy from his new article to the existing one, it wouldn't create a history problem because no-one else has contributed to the new article. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:33, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to restore a dead reference link with the help of the publisher[edit]

In the article Singapore Exchange there is a source link I added. The links have been linked to copies cached at WebCite, but unfortunately the link in question "died" before the archiving was performed. The specific reference I am referring to is no 25

Singapore Exchange Limited Completes Acquisition Of Singapore Commodity Exchange Limited, Thomson Reuters, retrieved 1 October 2010

That reference is a relatively crucial reference for the article, since it seems to be the only reference (that I found online) supporting the specific statement in question. Now my question is, would it make sense to contact Thomson Reuters and ask them to restore the page? If they still have the page on their servers but don't want to put it up online again, is it possible to cite sources that once had been published but now may only exist on the servers of the publisher? z font problem in Equipartition_theorem[edit]

The entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equipartition_theorem has an equation File:Http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/0/1/8/01810f646e00ef46728bad02069a4bb9.png The final subscript 'z' has lost it's center so it looks like two squiggles, like an approximate symbol. Author information on images[edit]

I found a set on Flickr of images that are properly licensed for upload to Wikipedia or Commons (I'll more than likely go Commons). Some of them might make it into an article or just be available with a commonscat link. The images do have a notation on the bottom of "[author's name] photography". I was under the impression that this was not acceptable but was not sure and can't find anything forbidding it. Anyone know if there is a guideline regarding this?Cptnono (talk) 19:53, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WP:WATERMARK. – ukexpat (talk) 20:00, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
They are acceptable. There's a subgroup (Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop/Eight Requests) in Wikipedia:Graphic Lab that work to remove the watermarks (either by cutting it out or photographic manipulation) in images used in articles (i.e. the most visible ones). If you have the skills, you're encouraged to watchlist it and help out every now and then. -- Obsidin Soul 21:04, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"...have any credits in the image itself...". Thanks, Ukexpat. I might shot a request over per Obsidian Soul's suggestion but assume the author would not have license it appropriately if he he knew that the credit could be removed.Cptnono (talk) 21:15, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Right - credits belong in image info pages, not in the image itself nor in captions where the image is used in articles.

thumbnail image sizes[edit]

I know that if you omit the thumbnail size in image markup (ie. [[File:example.jpg|thumb|Example]]), then the thumbnail is set to the default width set in the user's preferences. What is that default width for IP users? Astronaut (talk) 22:51, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

According to MOS:IMAGES, the default width is 220 px. However, I don't know how old that information is. My search of "default image width" resulted in three other hits (though not from policy pages), stating respectively 180, 240 and 250 px, with the increase in size correlated with the posts progressing to later dates, so it may have increased over time.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:56, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Linking Images[edit]

You may notice that on my userpage I've created a little hall of fame for FAs. I would like to link each star to its corresponding featured article, and have the name of the article appear when the mouse moves over it. How can this be done? Interchangeable|talk to me 23:49, 27 September 2011 (UTC) Update: I just moved the stars to a subpage to decrease my main userpage size. Interchangeable|talk to me[reply]

[[File:Cscr-featured.svg|20px|link=Masako Katsura]] makes .--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:44, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
{{Click}} also does what you are asking for. Mjroots (talk) 18:02, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
