Help with page upload[edit]

Hello,

I am trying to post a page for Albey Balgochian, but it seems someone already did and it was deleted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albey_Balgochian

He is fully qualified to be listed, he has performed with a full spectrum of people from Chuck Berry to Handy Award winning artist Paul Rishell to "Best Performances" by All About Jazz for his work with Cecil Taylor (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecil_Taylor scroll down to 2000) and Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra)

He has collaborated, performed or composed with many artists listed on your pages: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=free+jazz+musicians&title=Special:Search - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avant-garde_jazz#See_also - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free_improvising_musicians_and_groups - and many more...

Please advise as how to put up a page for him, he has been online since 1996, http://albeybalgochian.com and there is information, mp3's and video (including Cecil Taylor) here: http://albeybalgochian.com/music.html

I have spent hours on this, going to deletion logs, etc. trying to follow leads to find out what the problem is, going around and round in circles. Email does not work either.

Hopefully you can help, and I can post his information.

thank you peace JB

Help with photograph upload[edit]

I have uploaded a photograph to File:Johnson Street Bridge with VIA Rail Dayliner, 2008 May 13.jpg which I intended to be displayed embedded in the text of Johnson Street Bridge This did not happen. I tried to log into http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard but it does not accept my username (which I have been using for years). I am completely confused. Please, what do I do now? Smith9847 (talk) 00:52, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Go to Special:MergeAccount to make your account work at Commons and all other Wikimedia wikis. See Wikipedia:Picture tutorial for how to add images to articles. That's a separate process from uploading. Images can be added whether they were uploaded at the English Wikipedia or Commons. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:09, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I added the image to the article with this edit.--ukexpat (talk) 01:41, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

International church of crist[edit]

This organization has repeatedly been considered a cult. The least you cam do is include that in your article — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.237.210.66 (talk) 02:42, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Matters like that need to be discussed on the article talk page, Talk:International Churches of Christ CTF83! 02:47, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The word "cult" has been burdened with certain connotations that differ from the original definition. One must choose context wisely when using that word as a descriptor. Ditch 03:58, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
From the article "Psychologists who specialize in treating cult victims have reported that in several cities they are now treating more people from these discipling congregations than from all other groups put together. These professional counselors are unanimous in their judgment that the Boston-led hierarchy of discipling churches is a dangerous cult". Isn't that clear enough? Maproom (talk) 10:26, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just playing devil's advocate here. If you were to bring this up on the talk page of an article I was watching,I would respond as such:
  • For one thing, you didn't include a linked reference so there's no way for me (or another editor) to verify the statement. Is this a direct quote? If so, it should start with "The Medical Journal of XYZ (just for example) reported that psychologists who specialize in...etc... <ref></ref>" Also, there are some generalities in the statement: Who are the psychologists? What makes them specialists? Are they working for a University or some other reputable institution? How many more people are they treating...and as compared to what time frame? What are the "other groups?" Is it all other churches, or just the Church of Christ? "Professional counselors" means what exactly? Also, the words "unanimous," "judgement," and "dangerous" in the last sentence all trouble me when the first sentence is filled with generalities. I hope this helps when you go to the article talk page to discuss further. Ditch 15:49, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Responding to messages[edit]

I am getting messages from people and there is no explanation of how to respond- like "you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks, Jim1138" I can't find any way to learn how to use this. I have looked everywhere. Then again I got another one "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:XLinkBot" that says I can get help here = which is just more text that I can't navigate. And finally a message from a "sparksboy" who when I try to follow up apparantly doesn't exist in your system. Please help me. thanx Sally Cato — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sallycato (talkcontribs) 04:36, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Most posts to talk pages and forums will have a signature like “Jim1138 (talk)” If you click on the talk link, it will take you to the user’s talk page, where you can leave them a message. (In some cases the link to the link says something other than “talk”; for example mine is just “t”. —teb728 t c 05:14, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The welcome message on your talk page was left three years ago by SparksBoy, who has left the project since then; so his talk page is inactive. (But there is still a link to the inactive talk page in his signature.) —teb728 t c 05:20, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The message from XLinkBot is from an automatic program that reverts links that add improper links. The message on your talk page is to tell you that it reverted your edit to Smashed Gladys because it added a link to youtube. —teb728 t c 05:31, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
While I have your attention, I notice that you said a couple of places that you think you should have approval of content on Smashed Gladys. There are some other sites that allow subjects to control the content of articles about them. Wikipedia takes the opposite point of view: please read WP:COI. Since you have a conflict of interest with regard to Smashed Gladys and Sally Cato, you are discouraged from editing those articles directly. But you should feel free to make content suggestions and requests at the talk pages Talk:Smashed Gladys and Talk:Sally Cato. —teb728 t c 05:43, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sallycato, please read your own talk page. In particular, you should be aware that writing "I am getting very close to calling my council" is likely to be interpreted as a legal threat, and to get you banned from editing Wikipedia. Maproom (talk) 10:32, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Expanding Virtual collaboration article[edit]

I'm working on the article for Virtual collaboration and had recently submitted it for good article to get advice on how to improve it. One of the things the reviewer suggested was expanding the article and using more wikipedia-type information, along with more categories. I'm wondering what kind of expanding is appropriate for this article. And also, I think my sources are pretty reliable, nearly all found by google scholar, but if they are not then I'd need advice there as well. Any help is appreciated. Mouse Pointer[edit]

Hi,

I'm using Firefox 16.0.2 on Windows 7 and whenever I hover or slightly move my mouse, it is "tweaking out". Instead of remaining in the "I" mode it rapidly switches between "I" and pointer mode. Even as I type in this box it switches with every key that I press. It is making me nauseous, please fix!

Edit: It seemed to disappeer after resizing the window. Not sure if the bug is FF or Wiki or both.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.29.97.74 (talk) 06:07, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How can we remove "User:" from the article heading? My article is "User:Dr vikram shah" Please help — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mkay905 (talkcontribs) 10:00, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest first reading WP:Your first article. Since your account is not yet autoconfirmed (less than ten edits), you will need someone else to move it for you, to Vikram Shah. This can be requested as a technical move request at WP:RM. Apteva (talk) 10:26, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Azad Kashmir[edit]

Azad Kashmir (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) I have gone through this page and there is no history column anywhere, Any other pages about places normally have, it is disappointing about Kashmir because It is must to know for any place which is taken over by Islamic people specially if it was not there origin land , wikipedia should dare to provide history page as well on this topic so the world know how it has been slowly shofting from natives to encroachers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.180.31.100 (talk) 12:21, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is History of Azad Kashmir what you are looking for? (I'm not sure what you mean by history column. Please provide a link to an example history column in Wikipedia. Thanks.) -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:13, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have added that link to the article's "See also" section. Maproom (talk) 13:25, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tables and transclusion[edit]

If a table has a hundred rows, for example, is there a way to code the table to allow only certain rows to be transcluded into another page? For example, is there a way to transclude rows 1-18 into a page 1, rows 19-84 into a page 2, and rows 85 to 100 into a page 3, while keeping the original 100 row table in tact AND allowing that original table to have a sort feature? -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:10, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't tried and don't know whether you can also make it sortable but see WP:SELECTIVETRANSCLUSION with code like this:
<onlyinclude>{{#ifeq:{{{transcludesection|SECTIONNAME}}}|SECTIONNAME|
Place table rows in here. Replace all pipes with {{!}} because it's inside a big {{#ifeq:...}}.
}}</onlyinclude>

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.--ukexpat (talk) 16:40, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry for your anguish, but what you have done here is exactly like walking into a public library somewhere in the world and shouting your message. You might happen to find somebody sympathetic enough to try and help you, but they will probably have no more idea how to find your child than you have; and you are likely to annoy many more people. Unfortunately, if you look at http://www.ukbirth-adoptionregister.com/resources.php, it says "Unfortunately, under UK law, it is illegal to try and make contact with an adopted child, at least until they turn 18 years of age.", so it appears that what you are wanting to do is probably illegal. Sorry. --ColinFine (talk) 10:11, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of my persoanl information.[edit]

I am the owner of this house. I am politely asking that my home street address be removed from your page. It appears as #21 on the list.

National Register of Historic Places listings in Allen County, Indiana

I have a problem with people coming on my property and vandalism. I had asked before that the full description of my house omit the street address and Wiki happily deleted it and created a block so users will not be able to post the street address anymore. Not sure why it is posted on this link.

I enjoy having the house on Wiki. However, posting my home street address is just too much.

I also made the property "address restricted" when I made it a National Register of Hist. Places.

If you can please advise? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JohnDHaynes (talkcontribs) 16:24, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Follow the steps at WP:RFO to get your home address removed. RudolfRed (talk) 19:33, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's been removed - the street address isn't listed in the NRHP. I haven't suppressed the previous information, hopefully just getting it off the wiki page will be enough. --Elen of the Roads (talk) 19:28, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Christian Science[edit]

The article on "Christian Science" is full of innacuracies and much highly subjective commentary/argument which is not appropriate in an encylopedia entry purporting to give balanced information on a topic. I am very knowledgeable on the subject of C.S., and the few changes I made, using primary source material, to improve accuracy, as well as deletions, to reduce innacuracies and the subjective/argumentative nature of some of the content, have been deleted and old content returned. Since the Christian Science Church has a full-time public information department in Boston known as The Committe On Publication, it would make sense to consult them on the topic. I can't imagine many other Wikipedia articles about religious denominations/churches are dominated by the kind of critical analysis included in this one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rlbraun (talkcontribs) 18:55, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Then you haven't read many articles about religious denominations/churches here. You should be aware that we avoid the use of primary sources here, since secondary sources are more likely to provide neutral analysis; and that we don't consult the subjects of articles, since they have an extreme conflict of interest and are unlikely to be reliable sources on matters of controversy or analysis. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:02, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If the content you wish to remove is sourced to an independent reliable source, then you should not remove it without discussion: if it is unsourced opinion or evaluation, you may do so. But since this issue is evidently contentious, it would be best to discuss the matter on the article's Talk page; and if you and other editors cannot reach consensus, to follow Wikipedia's procedure for dispute resolution. --ColinFine (talk) 10:18, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adding info about actor Stephan Todd.[edit]

How can I add the current info and photo regarding myself on Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SCAR4775 (talkcontribs) 19:53, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

First, read WP:NACTOR and WP:GNG. You must satisfy at least one of these criteria in order to qualify for an article about you on Wikipedia. To understand why, see WP:N.
Second, if you believe you can show how you satisfy one of the above, then gather together factual information about yourself and your career, and the reliable published sources that support it, and post it at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. If you have a photo that the copyright holder is willing to release under a licence allowing others to reuse it freely, follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Uploading images.
Third, wait until someone writes the article. Writing about yourself is strongly discouraged here, because of the conflict of interest. - Karenjc 20:43, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Editing[edit]

This Wikipedia site is very bad at making sure that the contents of its pages is accurate. Inaccurate information has been displayed on here about many subjects and attempts to correct them with references has been unsuccessful. Please make sure that all your material is backed up by correct information as our children are using this site to help with homework and when they are given wrong information, it can be the difference between an A and an F.

No teacher worth his or her salt would accept any term paper or other submission based upon a Wikipedia article alone. The articles here should serve only to point the willing student to a more authoritative source, like an encyclopedia, or a BOOK! That said, the editors here do their best to avoid mestakes. You are welcome to correct the errors you find; just be sure you cite WP:Reliable Sources. GeorgeLouis (talk) 04:29, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! Then you have an opportunity to teach your pupils in an immediate, practical way, the single most important thing about using the internet: to approach everything you find in a critical frame of mind. But as GeorgeLouis says, many of the thousands of editors who care about the millions of articles in Wikipedia do indeed do all they can to ensure its accuracy, and you are welcome to help, and indeed to encourage your pupils to help once they have learnt the importance of critical thinking. --ColinFine (talk) 10:24, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That seems to have been a two-layered mistake - first an anonymous editor vandalized your talk page, then a recent changes patroller tagged the vandalism for deletion. Don't worry - you're still quite welcome to edit here! I hope this helps. WikiPuppies bark dig 00:41, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
