Removing the template name and swimming to properly say rowing

[edit]

I have edited my own wikipedia article (Brian Price, Rowing) so that it is accurate. In doing so I used a "swimming" template and so now it seems to display swimming as my sport. This also happened to pretty much all of my crew mates listed in my bio as I edited their wikipedia as well. Does anyone know how to correct this?? I would be very appreciative! Thanks Brian Price Olympic Champion Men's Eight 2008 Beijing Olympics — Preceding unsigned comment added by Briansprice (talkcontribs) 07:33, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed I have fixed your article, I have yet to fix your friends' though--Hallows AG (talk) 07:55, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This was the fix, so that's what needs doing on the others, Brian. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:32, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To the subtopic under heading sikhism

[edit]

my problem is that if a community who have heros like bhai mati dass ji, bhai sati dassji , and baba pragga ji how that community can be forgotten while mentioning about sikhs, i point out the encylopedia form artical on sikhism on wiki while the detailed history of MOHYAl/ or brahman sikhs are found on wiki itself i surprised that every one knew it very well as sikh originate from all major indian castes however due to unequality it is not used frankly in sikhism but for origin it should be taken other way like mentioning of jatt and nai etc So my sugestions are that to unite all sikh communities it is important to mentioned all who are obeying sikhism and sikh principals whatever cast or creed he is from data should be complete and unbiased, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohyal Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 106.192.183.102 (talk) 10:59, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Which article are you talking about? Discuss your suggestion at the talk page of that article: Talk:Sikhism? Talk:Mohyal? And explain more clearly what your suggestion is; don't assume people can read your mind. —teb728 t c 11:18, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if this edit is relevant? The edit notice for the portal talk namespace suggests posting at this help desk. To the original poster: if I've guessed correctly then I suggest you ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sikhism. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:11, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What to do about a user's sandbox

[edit]

A few days ago I reverted some vandalism at Ground zero where Ground Zero Official (talk · contribs) removed some content. I didn't even notice that they had actually replaced the deleted content by a piece about their band and then deleted it 15 minutes later without replacing the stuff they deleted. I have taken another look at their contributions and noticed User:Ground Zero Official/sandbox. Is that sandbox exempt from Wikipedia's policies because it is in the user space, or should WP:BAND apply there too? Astronaut (talk) 12:25, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Technically there's nothing wrong with the draft, WP:BAND doesn't really apply to user pages. Something at WP:SPEEDY may apply to it though. The user's user name is a problem, as it suggests a COI and possible role account rather than an individual, I have reported that at Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention. Яehevkor 12:41, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If the sandbox were older it might be deletable under WP:STALEDRAFT, but as it was created literally yesterday, it's not deletable. --NYKevin @728, i.e. 16:28, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dispute on article "Nair"

[edit]

{{admin help}}

Please see that the article "Nair" regarding the "Nair community" in it's current form has been purposefully presented in an extremely disgraceful manner by some anti-social elements by twisting the known history and actual facts. Kindly refer to the articles cited herein below to know what is the actual definition and related history of "Nair" community.

--Ashokkerala (talk) 12:45, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am an admin and I tell you that your best course of action is to raise the issue at the article talk page. This is not a matter for admin intervention.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:49, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I reformatted your post for readability and will discuss this on your talk page. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 12:55, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also please take note of the information boxes at the top of Talk:Nair, especially the bit about "The Wikipedia community has permitted administrators to impose discretionary sanctions..." I fear that if you continue to replace the entire article contents with your preferred versions copy & pasted from elsewhere, you could be subject to the General sanctions mentioned. Please, do discuss your issue with the article contents on Talk:Nair and gain consensus with other editors. Astronaut (talk) 13:07, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As an involved editor, we can certainly discuss this on the article talk page, but I will point out that the editor is seeking to return the article to a much older version that definitely does not have consensus, contains numerous "references" that don't meet RS, and is generally non-neutral. Also, the fact that the user is reverting to an old version very soon after beginning indicates the user is very likely a returning editor; unfortunately, I can't figure out who, so I can't request an SPI. Ashokkerala, if you want to discuss potential changes, I recommend you raise one or two of them at a time on the article's talk page; first, though, you should review WP:NPOV and WP:RS. a good school Article

[edit]

Can you please tell me what information is necessary to remove the stub tag from Carmel School Giridih. Link to guidelines and a Good School Article will be much appreciated. --ÐℬigXЯaɣ 14:03, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That article does not have a stub tag on it, and should not be classified a stub. Once an article starts to provide encyclopedic content (beyond a one or two sentences), it is no longer a stub, which this article clearly satisfies. Is that the question you wanted answering? ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 14:14, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • The stub tag was removed when it was elongated. My aim is to make it a good wiki article on school, and i obviously would not want to add content that may be considered as self promotion, can you please guide me to a good school article, regards (a school alumni) --ÐℬigXЯaɣ 14:22, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not stub, but there are no reliable third party sources giving the school a significant mention.. unless such sources are given this article is eligible for deletion. I've tagged as such, but you can present reliable sources to keep it. --lTopGunl (talk) 14:54, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Ok, thanks for clarifying. Your best resource would probably be the Schools Wikiproject, who will have a number of dedicated editors who would be much better placed to answer your questions - it might be worth dropping a note by there. You can find a list of good school articles Schools Wikiproject#Good articles|here and their guidelines on school articles here. More generally, the most important thing with a school article seems to be neutrality. It is best to stick to facts about the school (the WikiProject suggests the avoidance of things like mission statements) and to avoid comparisons with other schools) I hope that is of some help - let me know if you need anything else. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 15:00, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks a lot ItsZippy for your comment here. The Editor ToPGun (who has a history of disputes with me) seems to be upto something :) well see, neverthless thanks for your comment on AfD --ÐℬigXЯaɣ 15:44, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

DBigXray, as TopGun alluded to, please do not accuse people of being "up to something". As you and I both are, he is also trying to improve the encyclopedia - he may simply have different views. Let's keep the discussion on the article itself, and not on the editors involved. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 16:21, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

digitizer

[edit]

In the article, it would be nice if you mentioned James L. Rodgers who came up with the word in his electronic busines in the 70's.Thank you, Barbara Pyle-Rodgers — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.10.122.187 (talk) 14:19, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you supply a reference for that from a reliable source? Astronaut (talk) 15:07, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The word is much older. See for example this 1950 patent application for a digitizer. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:24, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What is the difference between National park, Sanctuary & biosphere. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.197.234.179 (talk) 15:33, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In your context, Animal sanctuary and World Network of Biosphere Reserves may be of special interest. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:43, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I added a navigation bar to my userpage and now text is small!

[edit]

I added a navigation bar to my userpage and now text is small!, how can I make the text regular size, Thanks, TBrandley.

It looks normal to me. If you mean all of wikipedia.org is small hold down Ctrl and scroll down on your mouse wheel or press '-' or '0'. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:56, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User page

[edit]

On my user page, there is a big gap on the cool stuff section, is there a way to make there be no gap, Thanks, TBrandley (talk) 21:32, 25 February 2012 (UTC).[reply]

This is because the userbox holder and the show/hide box cannot be displayed next to each other. I don't know a way to fix it without really modifying the userpage. The only two options I can think of are to remove the show/hide box, or to add a block of text to your userpage that reaches to/past the userbox container's end. I had this problem with the to do list transcluded to my userpage, but I had a small enough group of userboxes on my page that I could add a small amount of text about myself and my editing. There might be a better solution to your problem, but I don't know of one. - Purplewowies (talk) 01:38, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

[edit]

I fear that I do not really understand HTML, although I am able to use it on a very basic level. In the Bulova article, there is a section on the Accutron, some of which I have written (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulova#Accutron). There are two photos of Accutron tuning fork movements displayed, but there are a total of 5 different movements. I would like to add photos of the other movements below the existing photos. Exactly how do I do this? And one thing not mentioned here is how one finds one's answer. I am hoping that when an answer is posted I will receive an email notice with a link to the answer. If that is the case, it might be helpful to mention it in this page's instructions. If it isn't the case, I don't know how I'm going to actually get my answer.Tmaca (talk) 23:23, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To answer the second part of your question, in the 3rd bullet at the top of this page it says "Answers will be provided on this page; we are unable to provide answers via email." By default, any page that you edit will be added to your Watchlist, which you can see using the "My watchlist" link at the top of any Wikipedia page, so you can see when any changes are made to this page. - David Biddulph (talk) 02:39, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think that feature is disabled by default. See Help:Watching pages#Controlling which pages are watched. You can see pages you have edited like this one by clicking "My contributions" at the top of any page. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:50, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In answer to your first question, see Help:Files for how to upload and use pictures. (You have to upload them: the HTML img element is disabled on Wikipedia.) I will leave you talkback on your user talk page. —teb728 t c 07:50, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

image on the left screws up left-justification

[edit]

An image on the left screws up left-justification (specifically, bulleted lists don't left-justify to preceeding text; I notice also that blockquotes don't indent). Is there any way to counteract this, to somehow tell the system that the image changes the logical location of the left margin, so a bulleted list will align with preceeding text? Thank you. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 23:47, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please link to a page version where you see the problem and say which browser you have. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:50, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I created simple examples here, for both bullets and a blockquote.
Let me clarify I'm not reporting this as a *software bug*, I'm instead asking if there is some way to counter the bad effect on bullets and blockquotes by a left-placed image. (For example, some technique, or HTML, or magic word, that would counter it and allow bulleted lists and blockquotes to look normally under the new logical left margin set by the image. If there is no existing way to counter, it seems some new command could be written by some code-savvy expert, placed before and after the image, to tell text/lists/blockquotes that the location of the margin has changed. Where would I feed such a request to a WP programmer? The benefit of capability to move the logical left margin is of course that lists and blockquotes could then look the way they should. Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 04:40, 26 February 2012 (UTC) p.s. I'm using IE8 browser.[reply]
Bulleted lists do get messed up when there's an image on the left along side the list... I usually resolve this by keeping the image to the right of the list. Maybe there's a work around some one else can specify. --lTopGunl (talk) 00:53, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
