November 27[edit]

on copyrights[edit]

Wikipedia plays important role on information, researches and technology. I am asking great favors from your good office to help me ask permission from the Time Magazine to use a particular magazine issue cover regarding forest conservation. I will use this as background of my advocacy about forests. I find it easy to use the issue cover but i have to seek permission first to the Time Magazine thru Photo Wonder Apps on Facebook. Please help me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Felixcagayat (talkcontribs) 06:17, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP:CONSENT and Commons:ET have the form you can send to the copyright holder to give a licnense for Wikipedia to use the image. RudolfRed (talk) 06:40, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Are you thinking of using the cover on Wikipedia or something else? If it is for Wikipedia, you need to know that Wikipedia does not welcome advocacy, even for a worthwhile cause like forests. —teb728 t c 06:48, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

COM shortcut doesn't work?[edit]

On the page Commons:Email_templates it says that the shortcut is COM:ET. But that gives a redlink. Does COM not work as a shortcut at Wikipedia? RudolfRed (talk) 06:44, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Try Commons:COM:ET - You have to get to Commons first, then you can use COM to get to project space on Commons. —teb728 t c 06:54, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, your first link doesn't work either. It should be commons:Commons:Email_templates where I'm not stuttering. The first "commons:" is an interwiki prefix. The second "Commons:" is the name of the project namespace at commons, corresponding to "Wikipedia:" here at Wikipedia. "COM:" at commons is a namespace shortcut corresponding to "WP:" at Wikipedia. Thanks for the replies and the explanations.

BUZZ WARREN[edit]

You have my grandfathers Nick name spelled incorrect. It is BUZZ , Buist Lamb Warren. I am unable to make the correction in the edit section because it is the title name. thank you for your attention in this matter.

Untitled complaint[edit]

How can you expect people to donate money to an outfit that makes it so difficult for people who KNOW the facts to correct articles written by people who do NOT KNOW the facts? I (a University Professor) have several times alerted people to errors and been insulted for my efforts. So continue with your very UN=expert writers who often are completely ignorant of recent research and ignore people who know what they are talking about. But I have no wish to give money to such a stupid outfit as yours. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.63.202.17 (talk) 08:24, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We would be in a better position to help if you could mention which article you are talking about. The fundamental principle of determining the content in an article is 'Reliable sources' not 'Expert writers'. --Anbu121 (talk me) 08:44, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Anbu, I don't think he was talking about a specific article but about the fundraising drive. - a boat that can float! (watch me float) 14:01, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just out of interest, where do you get to be a university professor using terms like "UN=expert writers"? Britmax (talk) 12:17, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are the advertising banners intrusive and misleading?[edit]

Before logging in yesterday i was greeted by the blue home page banner telling me the average Wikipedia donation is £20. Today the average is £30 and the banner is red. Have many people complained about these either for being annoying or misleading, because i'm sure they're annoying to deal with, even though i accept they are necessary. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 09:13, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Same here. Unfortunately, even though registered users can disable them (Preferences → Gadgets → Suppress display of the fundraiser banner), we still have to see them before we log in. The Anonymouse (talk • contribs) 18:26, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response. I guess my main question though is are they deliberately misleading with their "average" donation amounts? I'm sure i've seen it change from £20 to £30 in the last two days, along with the colour of the banner too. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 18:34, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My banner is showing $30 (notice the US dollars not pounds). Are you confusing dollars and pounds possibly? According to a currency converter, $30 is equal to approximately £18.72 (rounded by Wikimedia to 20, I guess). The Anonymouse (talk • contribs) 23:05, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It could have been...will have to wait for it to repeat as today it's another different one. Today it's yellow...Thanks Jenova20 (email) 09:13, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, the way I trigger the banner is by clearing the browser cookies for Wikipedia. The Anonymouse (talk • contribs) 10:04, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've considered that just now, but i think i'll leave it, it's not really important. I just wondered if anyone else had noticed too. Thanks for the assistance Jenova20 (email) 10:31, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Now I'm actually curious how Wikipedia determines which currency to use... (if it does) The Anonymouse (talk • contribs) 17:16, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes it shows the currency I use, sometimes it shows dollars. - a boat that can float! (watch me float) 14:01, 30 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

APPROVING ARTICLE!! BACKLOGGED HELP PLEASE WITH[edit]

Hello!

I love Wikipedia and I very much understand that review and approval takes time, and I know there has been a backlog for weeks now.

Is there any way at all that I could please request that you expedite an article for approval? I have already submitted this article for review once and all was okay except that I did not include third party sources as references. I now have listed 6 sources besides the original primary source reference (so 7 sources). I know that approval will be fast, if only someone could just have the opportunity to see it.

It is truly important that this is approved by this weekend, if at all possible. I would be grateful.

It is the page below:

Thank you so very much!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.153.51.226 (talk) 15:05, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewed. The sources provided are still woefully insufficient to demonstrate notability; as such, I have declined the submission. Yunshui  15:14, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Articles for creation process is highly backlogged. Please be patient. There are currently 1017 submissions waiting for review. It is NOT "truly important that this is approved by this weekend": Wikipedia has no deadline. That said: the draft article is still rather promotional, and is ill-formatted. Look at the existing articles on important mathematicians and academics, and compare them to this draft: note the clear formatting, the links to other articles, and the lack of promotional language. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:15, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
".. over 15 book chapters .. over 165 research papers .. well over 3400 citations". This is promotional and repetitive. Better to give the actual numbers, or if you don't know them, say "about". Maproom (talk) 16:42, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

List of Jewish Newspapers in America[edit]

Please add the following to your list

The Jewish Voice & Herald it's at 401 Elmgrove Ave, Providence, RI www.jvhri.org

Nancy Kirsch executive Editor — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.167.19.146 (talk) 15:23, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No. Lists in Wikipedia are lists of topics that have, or could have articles about them; that is to say topics which are notable in Wikipedia's special sense (they have been written about in independent reliable sources). If your newspaper meets this criterion, then somebody could create an article about it (not you, if you are affiliated with it, as you would have a conflict of interest) and then it could be added to the list. --ColinFine (talk) 16:10, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Shadow Boxers[edit]

Hello,

On the wikipedia entry for Michael Bentt, my film Shadow Boxers is mentioned but it is not in blue and clickable but it should be since there is an active Shadow Boxers wikipedia entry.

Go to Special:Preferences, although nobody can see your email address. It is only used for verification if you forget your password and need it reset. --kelapstick(bainuu) 18:55, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Log in. Click on "Preferences" at the top of any page. Near the bottom of the "My preferences" page there is a section "E-mail options", and the first item on it is an option to change your email address. Maproom (talk) 18:58, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There should be a line looking like the following:
E-mail (optional)* my.email@provider.com (Change e-mail address)
Click on the Change e-mail link in that line. On the following page, make sure the field labeled New e-mail address: is empty. Then click Change e-mail and you're done. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 19:04, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Query about the article Dabble[edit]

There is an article called "Dabble" in Wikipedia, which as far as I can see is a computer game. My reason for coming here is that the article is currently being considered for deletion in Wikipedia: Articles for deletion, and the article has a tag stating this. My question is this. The article's tag states that the article is being considered for deletion, and then says "Please share your thoughts on the matter on this article's entry on the Wikipedia -deletion page". My question is why is that the reference to "this article's entry" is a red wiki-link, when the article does indeed have a section for deletion at Wikipedia: Articles for deletion for November 27? I am at a loss to understand how it came out as a red wiki-link when the article does have any entry. Any feedback on this question will be appreciated. Thank you in advane for any help, ACEOREVIVED (talk) 19:36, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have purged the page and the link is now blue for me. You may have to bypass your browser cache as well. The problem is that when you create the AfD page, the servers don't necessarily realise that the cached HTML versions of the article page need to be discarded and rebuilt. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:46, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

hydrogen bonding article submitted[edit]

Hello:

My pen name is manusbernard and I submitted a discussion on the three dementional aspects of boiling points of water, ammonia and hydrogen fluoride. I included a discussion on why hydrogen fluoride and ammonia only make two hydrogen bonds while water makes four. This dissertation adds to the overall picture of different boiling points.

My presentation was first rejected as nothing new, I wrote a rebuttal and have not received a response. Please let me know the status of my work.

Thank you

Please see the comments on your draft at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/depth discussion on hydrogen bonding and boiling points. At the moment the draft reads like an academic paper rather than an encyclopedia article.-ukexpat (talk) 20:34, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In your comments on the reviewer’s talk page you talk as though you think a novel approach would be a good thing on Wikipedia. But Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, we do not publish original research. In response to your specific question, you haven’t fixed the defects in your draft article and resubmitted it; so nothing has changed since it was rejected. —teb728 t c 23:38, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Official Facebook page for CSULA[edit]

California State University, Los Angeles' official web page is CSULA News at http://www.facebook.com/CSULAnews

The other Facebook pages online are created by campus affiliates or students. Thanks for your attention.

130.182.27.127 (talk) 20:16, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure I understand your question. Please elaborate.--ukexpat (talk) 20:29, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The article California State University, Los Angeles gives this external link: Official Website. It seems to me to be correct. But the OP may be wanting it changed to the Facebook page that he cites. Maproom (talk) 20:47, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My reading of IP 130's comment is that perhaps they want CSULA's official Facebook page to be added to the External Links section. When they said "official web page", my initial thought was that they intended to say offical "Facebook" page. If I'm wrong, then the only other thing IP 130 could be referring to is cite 27, which links to this affiliate Facebook page instead of the official school page. --76.189.101.221 (talk) 04:57, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

userspace background colour showing through some cells of a table[edit]

I'm guessing that this is a simple task, but I've failed to get it to work myself. At user talk:Thryduulf and User:Thryduulf/Barnstars I have tables that are set with "background: #ffffff" yet the blue userspace background colour is still showing through some cells. I'd like the entire area within the black borders to have a white background. Please can someone fix this or explain how I can fix it myself. If there is a better and still simple way to achieve the layout I have then please do feel free to suggest that as well! Thryduulf (talk) 20:51, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I originally posted this at Wikipedia:User page design center/Help and collaboration/Help requests before spotting that page is inactive (sorry). Thryduulf (talk) 20:53, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is happening because of the following code in MediaWiki:Monobook.css, and as far as I know MediaWiki does not allow using inline CSS on the elements in question. I am not yet sure whether the ", div#content div.thumb" part is unnecessary; IE 6 bugs might come into play. You might want to bring up this issue at MediaWiki talk:Monobook.css or Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). PleaseStand (talk) 22:37, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
div#content,
div#p-cactions li a:hover,
div#p-cactions li.selected a,
div#content div.thumb { /* "Margin" for thumbs, padding for galleries */
    background-color: #F8FCFF; /* Light blue */
}

A different reply: The blue part is the margins and captions of the images. You could control the background of the captions by wrapping them in divs, but I know of no way to control the margins except to remove the frame (or thumb) parameters of the images. If you did this, however, you would lose the captions; you would have to handle them separately like in your yellow boxes. —teb728 t c 23:02, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Breaking out the images sounds like the simplest thing to do, thanks. Thryduulf (talk) 23:05, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How do I save/article/list a page for further reading later?[edit]

There are some lists that I want to save and go back to later as they are long and detailed. How do I do this as a registered user of Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pennyvm (talkcontribs) 22:44, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The closing thing to what you are talking is probably the watchlist (please see the linked page for detailed information). Simply click on the "star" button to the left of the search box to "watch" an article. A watchlist not only lists articles, but it also shows you when they were last modified, who modified them, and even if you have read the new revision (article revisions that you haven't read yet will appear bold). Also, you could just create a subpage within your userspace with a list and add/remove articles manually. The Anonymouse (talk • contribs) 23:15, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alternatively, if you just want to read the contents instead of watching how people modify them, you can download them as PDFs. On the left side of your screen, just left of the article text, there should be a "print/export" line. Under it you'll find a "Download as PDF" option. You can also create a single large document of multiple lists; use the books feature to create a book of the articles you want, and then you can download the book as a single large PDF.
