Landing gear problems[edit]

united airlines bozeman mt landing gear would not lower 8/5/2013 for 35 minutes, they weren't sure landing gear was locked so passengers had to be in crash position for landing — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.189.56.33 (talk) 01:45, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is there an article about this aviation incident? If so, discuss at the article talk page. If not, was the incident notable enough for an article? Robert McClenon (talk) 02:52, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:AIRCRASH there would only be an article if the plane actually crashed. Technical problems are a daily routine ocurrence for airliners and of no lasting significance or notability unless the incident results in a change in the law/regulations or the aircraft's design or manufacturing process. Ref tag question[edit]

What is the tag to use when a cited reference does not support or even contain the content it supposedly sources? I believe I've seen it before but can't recall what it is. OccamzRazor (talk) 05:10, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Probably {{Failed verification}} or {{irrelevant citation}}. RudolfRed (talk) 05:16, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! Thank you for your quick response. OccamzRazor (talk) 05:39, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted article - Sadat Institute of Higher Education[edit]

Hi Everyone, I am the Publishing Manager of Sadat Institute of Higher Education[1]. I wanted to create a page describing my university, when I created it was nominated for speedy deletion, they said I violated the rules, however I am the owner of the website which I copied text from it is www.sadat.edu.af now what to do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SayedAzeemSadat (talkcontribs) 08:17, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question title added. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 09:28, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you copied text from a copyright website, then Wikipedia will regard that text as a copyright violation unless the copyright owner explicitly licences it according to the procedure in WP:Donating copyright materials. If you own the copyright, then it is open to you to donate the text in that way, and that will clear the copyright problem. However, text from a subject's own website is usually not appropriate for a Wikipedia article, because text from the website is usually too promotional in tone. It is right and proper for the institution's own website to speak of it in a promotional tone, but Wikipedia requires neutral language.
In fact, if you are employed by the institute, you probably should not edit such an article at all, as you have a conflict of interest. Your best course is to find the multiple reliable sources, independent of the subject (such as newspapers or books) which discuss the institution in some depth, and request and article at requested articles. --ColinFine (talk) 10:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Christopher Miles (Director) page[edit]

I have been a fan of the director Christopher Miles work for some time and even wrote a paper on him for a college course. I found his page, which had warnings across the top about not being enough citations to verify sources of information. I have been through it in some detail and added citations where I know them to apply. Have I done enough for this warning to be removed or do I need to do more? Or perhaps this is an automated process which just happens when Wikipedia notices the changes? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Merlin Energy (talkcontribs) 09:07, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Merlin. Looking through the article, it appears that you have done an excellent job! The article certainly doesn't need the tag anymore (which, by the way, is manually placed there by editors). I'll go back through with a fine-tooth comb and tag any more wrinkles with a {{citation needed}} tag, but you've definitely done well. Thanks for your hard work! Deadbeef 09:14, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the feedback too Deadbeef. Now feeling inspired to look at others :) Merlin Energy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Merlin Energy (talkcontribs) 09:18, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have just been going through the Wikipedia layout guidelines to see if I can get that warning removed too and it appears to comply as far as I can make out with the possible exception of not having a picture in the box on the top right with his birth date etc. Do you have any suggestions or comments? Merlin Energy (talk) 09:48, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that this has been resolved. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:49, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Adding "Authority control"[edit]

Dear Wikipedia Help Desk Team Editors:

An inquiry addressed to Wikipedia Information Team concerning "Authority control" responded with a referral to your department.

The EN, DE, ES Wikipedia articles about José Bernal require "Authority control" to provide easy access to readers doing research on this Cuban-American artist, 1925-2010: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Bernal, because there is a very large number of people named Jose Bernal, at least one Mexican artist and many other artists whose names include the name "Bernal."

The art of Cuban-American José Bernal, whose Wikipedia link is noted above, is published in books, articles, catalogs, monographs. Also, it is in 13 art museums, one in Spain and twelve in the U.S.A., and his artworks continue to be incorporated in art museum collections and museum exhibitions. Therefore it would be a significant and helpful addition to his EN, DE, ES articles to have "Authority control." Unfortunately, attempts to follow the guidelines in Wikipedia's "Authority control" link haven't been successful, even with assistance from Wikipedia volunteers and staff of the Smithsonian Institution. For this reason I seek assistance from the expertise of your Help Desk Team, as it was suggested by the Information Team. With appreciation for your consideration of this request, Ulla1540 (talk) 15:14, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Ulla1540[reply]

This must be about Wikipedia:Authority control. I, for one, had never heard of Authority control. I wish you luck in finding someone who understands it. Maproom (talk) 18:09, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have at times added {{Authority control}} to articles; it's quite straightforward, just a matter of searching the various databases and copying the identifiers into the template. But I have had no luck finding José Antonio Severino Bernal Muñoz in LoC, VIAF, ISNI or OGND. There are of course a lot of José Bernals, but I couldn't find one whose dates matched. He may just not be sufficiently well-known. Sorry about that, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 23:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Humanities[edit]

I want to know about humanities. if u give me a paragraph then it will be easy for me to understand — Preceding unsigned comment added by 61.247.181.70 (talk) 15:43, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you have questions to ask, try Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities. If you want to read about the topic, it is at (not surprisingly) Humanities. - David Biddulph (talk) 15:48, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

tabs help[edit]

Hi,

I am trying to figure out how to make/ configure/ or use a template to create tabs on my project page that look like these tabs: Wikipedia: GLAM/National Archives and Records Administration. I have not been able to find any templates or sources that help me do this. I want to give the tabs my own titles and have them appear blank when I first get them so I can fill them in.

Please help me figure out how to create tabs, or link me to a good template for tabs. Thanks!!!!!!! OR drohowa (talk) 15:57, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The tabs on Wikipedia:GLAM/National Archives and Records Administration are implemented through Wikipedia:GLAM/National Archives and Records Administration/Tab header. You can use a similar format and modify it to suit your requirements. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:22, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

template on my article says i dont have reliable sources[edit]

Please review my article Hanwant Mal Lodha, the template says that I do not have reliable sources or references on my article, there are no references available on the internet but the information is available on the subject's blogs which wikipedia wont allow me to add in references, other information are from the law journals, which we have referred from, and i have written in the references section. If you think they are suitable then please remove the template. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.99.194.189 (talk) 16:26, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved your message to the foot of the page, as that is where new messages are found. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:31, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Blogs are almost never reliable sources, and the subject's own publications are not independent, and so are not regarded as adequate either for notability or for supporting content other than uncontroversial factual information. References are required to be inline to identify the information that they are supporting (see WP:Referencing for beginners). Finally, the "reported cases" that you have adduced almost certainly say nothing about the subject except that he represented certain parties. In order to have a Wikipedia article about a subject, there must be multiple reliable secondary sources, independent of the subject, which have written at length about the subject; so in this case it would require articles in books or journals written about Hanwant Mal Lodha. These do not have to be online, or in English, but they have to exist and be referenced in the article, otherwise the article fails to establish that the subject is notable (in Wikipedia's special sense) and the article will be deleted. --ColinFine (talk) 17:44, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

temporarily shut down page[edit]

How can I temporarily take down a wiki page that I published too soon? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.5.254.13 (talk) 19:13, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you're the only contributor, you can just redirect the page to another relevant page (for example, redirecting a page about an album to the album's artist) or if you want it actually deleted you can put {{Db-g7}} at the top and an administrator will delete it shortly. Scarce2 (talk) 19:45, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You could also, assuming that you have an account and Move rights, move it to a sandbox under your username and then have the redirect deleted. Dismas|(talk) 21:02, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

ClueBot edit didn't stick[edit]

A few weeks ago ClueBot reverted vandalism at Chrome steel. However, the content is still visible on the page, though it's missing from the source when you go to edit. What could be causing this, and how could it be fixed? I tried purging. --BDD (talk) 19:58, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I just did a purge and it seems to have gone now, although I have no idea why that didn't work when you tried it. January (talk) 20:29, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
