Trying to update information on agency page[edit]

I am trying to update the information on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) page, with no luck.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_Agriculture,_Fisheries_and_Forestry_(Australia)

This page has reference to out of date information, including:

- DAFF Biosecurity no longer exists, it is now just known as DAFF (see second paragraph on this page http://www.daff.gov.au/biosecurity and additional information here http://www.daff.gov.au/about/annualreport/2011-12/part-2/our-stakeholders - 5th paragraph).

- Andrew Metcalfe is now Secretary - not Conall O'Connell(http://www.daff.gov.au/about/contactus/secretary/bio)

- Rhonda Dickson no longer works for DAFF. Mark Tucker is now Deputy Secretary (http://www.daff.gov.au/about/contactus/org-structure2)

I have tried to update the content on this page and was told that I could not, for some reason. When trying to updat the content, I simply selected edit on the page and added the new text. The message I got back said that I could not update the page.

A simple explanation on how I can update the information on this page would be appreciated.

Thanks

According to the page history, some of the edits were reverted because you did not explain them with an edit summary. Others apparently were text copied from somewhere else which is not allowed. You've posted on the article's talk page, which is the right next step. Your requested text seems overly promotional in tone and not written in a neutral way. You should rework it so that it reads more like an encyclopedia article and less like a brochure. Also, if you are associated with the DAFF, you should ask for help with your edits by placing {{edit request}} on the article's talk page when you have the text ready to go. RudolfRed (talk) 06:29, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You made several edits to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) article, without leaving any explanation of why you had made them. They included deletion of content. They were then reverted by another editor. I recommend you to:
  • Register an account with Wikipedia. This will allow other editors to identify your edits.
  • Leave a brief "Edit summary" whenever you make an edit.
  • Do not delete content without explaining why you consider it wrong or irrelevant.
  • If possible, supply citations for the material that you add.

Englebert Humperdink Typo[edit]

This is NOT a question, but rather an advisement. I was researching Engelbert Humperdinck, and noticed that there is an error in the date of release. Specifically in respect to "Release Me" Wikipedia has it as 1999, which should read 1969. Thanks for all the work. I thoroughly enjoy your website!

Porn from external link site[edit]

While reading a Wikipedia page about the quince fruit I clicked an external link for Persian jam recipe and was directed to several porn pages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.137.6.93 (talk) 03:57, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Was it in the Quince article? Which link? The ones I tried look OK, but there's many. RudolfRed (talk) 05:41, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes websites get highjacked or re-registered. If an external link (note: not a link in a reference/citation) doesn't go anywhere, or it doesn't go to a useful and appropriate webpage, then you should feel free to remove it. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:22, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Problems to add a reference.[edit]

Hi,

I´m a beginner and I have problems to add a reference. I´ve modified the Ali Williams (rugby player) article, but I don´t know how to make a correct reference to the web and news.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ManuSamoaManuelu (talkcontribs) 06:51, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your first edit looked correct, but your second edit was confused (and it isn't clear what you were trying to achieve) so I have reverted it. I would recommend that you read WP:Referencing for beginners. - David Biddulph (talk) 07:32, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On looking again at your first edit I see that there was some confusion in that you used the <ref name = ...> construct, but the name you chose was one which had already been used in the article, so I've removed your reuse of that name. A reference doesn't need to be named unless you wish to define it once and then use it in more than one place in the article. For that reason the previous instance of that ref name didn't actually need to be named. This aspect is explained in more detail in Wikipedia:Naming references for beginners. - David Biddulph (talk) 07:44, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, volunteers at the Wikipedia Help Desk don't have expertise on all of the 4 million+ articles here, so if you could please be more specific as to what information you would like to see added, maybe explaining what REME is, and providing a source for the information, we might be able to help. Or you could do it yourself if you have a published source. And is Junior Leaders the article you are referring to, or did you have another in mind? You might also have better luck posting your request on the article's talk page. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:56, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Sound Synthesis redirected?[edit]

Sound Synthesis redirects to Synthesizer. "Sound Synthesis" is clearly not the same thing as Synthesizer yet the redirect exists. Is there a reason why? I've read the FAQ but I don't see anything that applies to this situation. Would it be inappropriate to replace the redirect with a proper "Sound Synthesis" article? I haven't written a replacement article yet but would like to start working on one.

Here are a couple of references to show that "Sound Synthesis" is clearly not the same thing as a "synthesizer". Sound Synthesis stub

Vam drainpipe (talk) 10:36, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There's absolutely no reason not to do that, although maybe you should check with yourself first that you have content in mind that will not just be about how a synthesizer works. Formerip (talk) 10:38, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The page started out as a redirect then was changed into an article and then back to a redirect. The last time it was an article is here. You might ask @Redheylin: why they converted it from an article to a redirect. GB fan 10:44, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I can't immediately see the need for a new article. In your stub you list a number of different methods, and there is a very similar list of techniques in the second paragraph of the lede of the existing article. It isn't clear what the difference in scope between old & new articles is intended to be, and I would have thought that it might be better to try to improve the existing article rather than writing a further article in parallel. You have done the right thing by raising the question in the talk page of the article, and hopefully the discussion can continue there. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:49, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are some overlaps in the material because they are closely related subjects. In my mind "Sound Synthesis" should be board article about the theory and history of "sound synthesis". There is only one theory of "subtractive synthesis". In contrast, a synthesizer is a tool. It is a specific implementation of "sound synthesis" ideas that can be used to create sound. There are many different synthesizers that implement "subtractive synthesis". The synthesizer page should give a board overview of the history of synthesizers (ie the tools). Vam drainpipe (talk) 23:43, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The current "synthesizer" and old "sound synthsis" articles are very low quality. I think that is in part because both pages because there has been a blurring of these subject boundaries. In my opinion both pages contain material that is off-topic for the page. Vam drainpipe (talk) 23:43, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The article was merged to Synthesizer, as noted, because of "total overlap". I apologise for omitting the destination. The text-dump merged version appears here [1] . As will be evident from the history of this latter page, this occurred in the course of a three-day edit, merging a half-dozen stub and overlapped articles into a single page - the page that is most likely to be found, and where all the merged information was most useful. At that stage there was no data in the Sound synthesis article that did not or could not appear in Synthesizer, and things seem to have stayed that way for 3 1/2 years. Transclusion using <onlyinclude>[edit]

Can anyone have two parts of the page enclosed in <onlyinclude> and use those two transclusions separately? –HTD 10:46, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean that one page should display one section and another page display the other section then it requires complicated code. See meta:Help:Template#Alternatives. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:22, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Let's say I have an article called "Banana". I want to use the text in the "Apple" section in "Banana" on another article "Orange". Meanwhile, I want to use the text in Banana#Pineapple on the same "Orange" article. Can I do that? –HTD 14:45, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Articles created[edit]

Dear editors: What is the best way to find out how many articles a user has created? —Anne Delong (talk) 11:55, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

By using the "Articles created" link in the box at the foot of the user's contribution record, but that does rely on the relevant tool server being alive & kicking. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:06, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a clue about what a "best way" may be, but here is a "good enough" link. For example, replacing "name=Anne+Delong" with "name=Shirt58" yields this. Is this an OK answer to what you are looking for? Peter in Australia aka --Shirt58 (talk) 12:21, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fake article[edit]

Dear editors: On this notice board Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion#August 6, 2013, a user page is being nominated for deletion as a WP:FAKEARTICLE. It was created two days ago. Don't we encourage users to work on articles on their own user or sandbox pages before adding them to the encyclopedia or submitting them for review at Afc? I have unfinished articles in my userspace much older than this one; can someone give me some guidance about what is inappropriate about the particular article under discussion? —Anne Delong (talk) 12:19, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The real problem that I see is that the article is in the primary user page, not a subpage in user space. It is as if you, Anne Delong, had written an autobiography and put it on your user page in the form of a real Wikipedia article. This also raises the question of the account name of the editor, which is that of the group, and account names should be names or pseudonyms of people, not of organizations. I think that the problem isn't that just that it is a draft in user space on a subpage, which is permitted, but that it is a draft on a primary user page. It's a subtle rule, but I think that the nomination here is correct. I have occasionally seen the same problem before, a (promotional) biographical article on a primary user page. In this case, the difference is that it isn't a biography of a living person, but an article about a group of living people.

Finding articles linking to another[edit]

How do I get a list of articles that link to a specific article? I want to disambiguate links that currently go to a particular disambiguation page. Just searching for the title phrase is no good, because the great majority of hits that come up are not actually links. Thanks. Duoduoduo (talk) 15:39, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Open the article page, then under "Toolbox" in LH margin, select "What links here" it lists all the articles that link to that - articles indented in the list are usually linked via a redirect. Arjayay (talk) 15:44, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Shanar/ chanar Caste redirects to Nadar Caste - Wikipedia please create separate Link (Wrong Information copied and posted from other websites)[edit]

Hi Wikipedia,

Please Create a Separate Page for Chanar(Shanar) Caste of Tamilnadu in India, which is currently being redirected to Nadar Caste of Tamilnadu in India.

Extended content
            Chanars(Shanars) - Plural ; Chanar (Shanar) - Singular
            Nadars - Plural ; Nadar - Singular

This is totally incorrect and mis represented and wrong Information copied and pasted from some blogs posted in another website as shown below. Chanar(Shanar) Caste is totally different from Nadar Caste. This is an ambiguity and is misrepresented here in Wikipedia from wrong Sources. This Wrong Information is copied and pasted from another website from these links below:"

Travelling from Shanar to Nadar - [1] and
Explain the Shanar caste and the dress restrictions imposed [2]

In India Caste system is based on the Ancient Profession of Ancient Indian Families.

Ancient Professional Skills are passed down to their own Children to maintain the secrecy or confidence of their Family Profession and protect the skill set and hence the Caste System came into Existence in INDIA.

Nadars are Landlords.

They own large swathes of Agricultural Lands, Gardens and Farm Houses. Nadars hired laborers belonging to other communities to work in the Agricultural Lands owned by them. Nadars also sometimes Leased their Lands for Agricultural Purposes to other people belonging to same Nadar Community.

However, Some People belonging to Nadar Community haven't owned any Land. Such Nadars, migrated to other places as Merchants or traveled far west to Persia (Ancient Middle-east) to seek their fortune.

But,

Shanars (Chanars) are Blacksmiths.

They make Iron Tools for Household as well as for Agricultural purposes and also provide Services for maintenance of these tools like repairing and sharpening of these Tools. Most of them in this Shanar(Chanar) community were very poor that they even worked odd jobs which involves in working with these tools in Farm Houses owned by rich Nadar Community Land Lords also called Zamindars.

Sickle Users of Shanar (Chanar) community worked as Climbers or Reapers in Palmyra and Coconut tree farms. Plough Users of Shanar (Chanar) community worked in the paddy fields and farm houses. While other members of Shanar (Chanar) community provided Tool Maintenance Services like Sharpening of Knives and other Sharp Tools made by the Shanar (Chanar) Blacksmith Community. Some of the members of Shanar (chanar) Community even associated themselves with the Warrior Tribes (Kshatriya)

Shanars(Chanars) also worked as laborers in the Agricultural Lands, Farm Houses and Paddy Fields owned by the Nadars.
The Travancore Kingdom

Politically, Both of these Tamil speaking Communities were suppressed and treated as Slaves by the Malayalam speaking Travancore Kingdom and its Malayalam People. Although there were exceptions where the rich Nadar community people were given some relaxations by the Travancore Kingdom. Some of the Tamil Speaking Nadar community People were even considered and treated as equal along side Malayalam Speaking Travancore People — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.202.167.200 (talk) 15:53, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Magic Words or Other Options to Generate Username[edit]

Hello, everyone! I think that this is a long shot, but is there a way to pull the user's name for an inputbox. Example: User:Jackson_Peebles/Adoption/Lesson_1 has an input box at the bottom. Right now, it requires users to manually put their username into the input box, but you'd be amazed how hard some new users find this (no offense to them, they're learning) without including parentheses or quotes or something. So, I'd like the input box to come preloaded with User:Jackson Peebles/Adoption/Jackson Peebles Exam 1 rather than User:Jackson Peebles/Adoption/(YOURUSERNAME) Exam 1 (assuming the person using the page was me; otherwise, I'd want it to be the person using the page.

I've thought of using a version of the signature, but that won't work because of the variation of signatures and talk link AND I can't get it to parse correctly (it always includes my signature from the time I created the preload page). I've thought of using the magic word for the last revision user, but that's alway me, as the lesson pages are all in my userspace. This is actually quite relevant to some grantwork going on at MW; I may be looking at moving a course to WP space, but this is (one of many) complications. Any help? Is there a magic word I'm missing? Thanks! --Jackson Peebles (talk) 20:06, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There was for a long time a bug that allowed a magicword to pull the username of the person viewing a page, and use it in such a way. Unfortunately, the bug was fixed, and now the magic word only works when an edit is submitted. For WP:ACE what we do is have a candidate create their main candidate page using a first input box, that then creates the proper input boxes for later use, see Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2010/Candidates/Preloader. Unfortunately, this still requires entering a username the first time. If you do find a way that doesn't involve the editor making an edit first, I'd be very interested to see it. Also, may have more luck at WP:VPT. Monty845 21:26, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

footnotes- moving the long ones to the section end[edit]

background- There is a readability problem (when editing a source or in a Diff page) with a long (explanatory) footnote (with quotation).

I tried to improve it, in this test section. I have moved the long footnote to the section end, and used only shortened (repeated) footnotes inline. It appears fine, but there is an accumulation of footnotes marks immediately after the section last word.

questions:

  1. is it possible to hide those marks?
  2. Is there an alternative method ? (for using long footnotes without the source readability problem ? Ykantor (talk) 21:23, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Try WP:List-defined references. That lets you put long footnotes down at the bottom of the page, and lkeep only <ref name=Name /> up in the text. WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:14, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. It seems promising. Ykantor (talk) 03:40, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you (again). This is exactly what I was looking for. Ykantor (talk) 01:55, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This question is probably better suited for the reference desk, since the help desk is for how to use Wikipedia. Try this link: [3] and if that doesnt help, ask on the reference desk. RudolfRed (talk) 02:19, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template loop warnings[edit]

What's wrong with the redirect code template on Inflation theory? {{Redr|nick|related|unprintworthy}} is the code in question, but I couldn't find anything in the documentation explaining what not to do. Nyttend (talk) 21:52, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just picking random ones at the category, it looks like it also puts them into the category "Redirects for Discussion". I think this is a problem with the paramaters, but I can't see where looking at the code of what {{redr}} redirects to... User:Technical 13 comes to mind as someone who may know. ~Charmlet -talk- 22:04, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's due to Template:R related being nominated for deletion. I fixed Inflation theory in [4] but a general fix is needed to remove a lot of other redirects from Category:Template loop warnings. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:28, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

How do you add new people to Wikipedia? Can you please tell me how to make information live, if I have created a bio on a specific person...

I've added a welcome message to @MelvinSmith45:'s talk page. That should help out. Dismas|(talk) 23:43, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
