ISBN problem[edit]

Hello. There is a problem with some ISBN citations here:Mohegan_people#Notes — But when I try: "Please click here to fill in your citation" I get "You do not have permission..."   (By the way, these are not sources I added – just trying to help out.)  ~Any assistance appreciated, ~Eric F 74.60.29.141 (talk) 00:39, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think you don't have permission because IP editors can't create templates, so I've created the subpage for you. Just fill out: Template:Cite isbn/978029274624. FallingGravity (talk) 08:04, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Probably better to use the code instead of a specially constructed template:
{{cite book |title= |last1= |first1= |authorlink1= |coauthors= |editor1-last= |editor1-first= |editor1-link= |year={{{year| <!--replace this comment with the publication year--> }}} |publisher= |location= |isbn=978029274624 |url= |page={{{page|}}} |pages={{{pages|}}} |ref={{{ref|}}} }}
--ukexpat (talk) 13:36, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like the ISBN is invalid. Do you know what work/book it was supposed to cite? FallingGravity (talk) 07:45, 23 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cataloguing[edit]

Dear editors: I was just wondering... has there been any discussion of giving Wikipedia articles Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress catalogue numbers? It sure would make it easier to find related articles. —Anne Delong (talk) 02:34, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know. Currently, Wikipedia uses categories instead. If you look at the bottom of an article, you will see a list of which (if any) categories it belongs to. Click the category name, and you'll get a list of all other articles also in that category. For example, Estonia. If you wanted to see other states in the Baltic you could click the Baltic States category link. RudolfRed (talk) 03:24, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, these categories sort of work. However, with two professionally developed systems available, I'm surprised no one has developed a way to add a DDS number. Too simple, maybe? —Anne Delong (talk) 04:23, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder how many people would make use of it. I'm sure it could be done, but I'm not convinced it would be worth the effort. You could suggest it at one of the departments of the WP:Village Pump; or, thinking about it, it might now be something that would fit better into Wikidata - you might bring it up at d:WD:Project chat. --ColinFine (talk) 15:50, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help moving an article with a redirect named the same as the new article name[edit]

I'm trying to move William Shakespeare's style to Shakespeare's style, a page I want to begin working on, but the name is being used by a redirect. I tried moving the redirect, but evidently something more is needed because I couldn't make it work. The reason for moving the page is to conform it to the other Shakespeare pages, and the given name is generally not needed when discussing Shakespeare. Could someone tell me what I need to do? Tom Reedy (talk) 04:42, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've done the move for you. In general you can ask at WP:Requested moves/Technical requests for any uncontroversial moves that require admin assistance. Only admins can move a page over a redirect that has non-trivial history. EdJohnston (talk) 05:32, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much. Tom Reedy (talk) 12:41, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

National Defense Mediation Board[edit]

Hi, I made a new entry entitled "National Defense Mediation Board" and I'm not sure if it went through for review. I clicked "save" many times but did not receive any confirmation that the submission went through. Could someone check for me or let me know how I can check? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonjonlam (talkcontribs) 05:42, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see, your edit was not saved. If you click the "Contributions" link at the top right of each page you will see that this help desk post is the only edit made by your account. I've also checked National Defense Mediation Board and Wikipedia talk:Articles for Creation/National Defense Mediation Board, the most likely places you might have saved the new page. Do you have another copy of your text? -- John of Reading (talk) 08:11, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK, was I supposed to create a talk page for the article? Because I did go through the article creation wizard and was editing my text through there. Perhaps I can just send you my text? Let me know how. thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonjonlam (talkcontribs) 18:05, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you have just managed to create Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/National Defense Mediation Board. Do you have any idea what you did differently this time? (I had an uppercase "C" for "Creation" in the link in my first post here) -- John of Reading (talk) 18:23, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have reviewed and passed the draft - the article is now at National Defense Mediation Board. Congratulations! (If only all drafts were so well written the first time around... :) Roger (talk) 20:49, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article star ratings have gone - why ?[edit]

Why have the article star ratings at the bottom of each article gone ? Surely they were of some use? --Penbat (talk) 07:59, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to User:Okeyes (WMF): "On Thursday and Friday the tool will be down for a deployment; it should be up by Saturday, failing anything going wrong, and by Monday if something does :)". FallingGravity (talk) 08:31, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK thanks. Im not sure what "major deployment" means but i hope the existing ratings data is retained not lost.--Penbat (talk) 08:40, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the feedback tool is still in beta and so the roll-out will include more or all articles when it's finally ready. Hopefully that's what is happening now...Jenova20 (email) 12:12, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also I think I read that they are implementing an option to hide the tool for those who don't want to see it.--ukexpat (talk) 13:38, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think two things being confused here. I think the star ratings feature was applied to all articles for the last year or so. Yes the feedback tool is in beta and currently only applied to some articles but that isnt relevant to my enquiry. --Penbat (talk) 14:09, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Inaccuracy Problem[edit]

Problem with the following website for the NYPD detective bureau New York City Police Department Detective Bureau The page says that it was formed in 1928, which is not true. I can site several articles including wikipedia page for Thomas F Byrnes who was in the bureau in the 1800s. Thomas F. Byrnes

Someone calling himself "shadowjams" keeps changing it back to 1928! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mercurypdx (talkcontribs) 08:49, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Shadowjams is correct to revert your edits precisely because you do not actually cite an acceptable source, claiming that you can cite several articles is not the same thing as actually doing so. However, you cannot use another Wikipedia article as a cite. See WP:Reliable sources for guidance about what types of sources are acceptable. Roger (talk) 09:05, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Shadowjams has invited you to discuss this on his talk page. I think you should do that. Maproom (talk) 09:09, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Annual General Meetings[edit]

I have been looking for the concept of "meetings held at first and second call" which is not covered in the Wikipedia. I would like to know how a stub can be put in place to start an article on this subject.

It is a parliamentary procedure in common use at shareholders' meetings in Southern Europe and probably originates from the Napoleonic Code but it is also widely used in other types of meetings. Expatriates in Spain come across it if they own a condominium property in Spain, so it is not exactly a minority interest. In relation to this aspect some further information can be found in https://sites.google.com/site/oceanridgeproperty/home/property-in-spain/condominium/copy-general-meetings/procedure/unanimity-and-majority However, that article only relates to Spanish condominiums. The use of the procedure is far more extensive, not only in Spain but also in Italy, France and other European countries. 88.27.47.227 (talk) 12:02, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Phantom spacing on Citroën DS4[edit]

There's a lot of spacing before the Euro NCAP table and i can't see why. Can someone fix it please? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 12:08, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have brought some changes to the article and it looks better than before. The only way I can think of making it better is by expanding the article with more text --Ushau97 talk 12:45, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Another pic added and some other changes too. Whitespace have completely gone now. Euro NCAP test results is the only thing which doesn't look good now --Ushau97 talk 13:03, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well it does look worse at the bottom of the page now. And the citation for it was for the section it was previously placed after, which directly talks about the test results. Your move places the engines there instead...? Thanks i guess Jenova20 (email) 13:13, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've rearranged it back into sections, only i've added headers now. This way the citations are in the right place and the unused white space in the article is reduced a lot. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 13:26, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Richard Nixon[edit]

Recent Tapes show that Nixon deliberately sabotaged talks former President Lyndon Baines Johnson had negotiated between the North and South Vietnamese. When these talks had been settled, LBJ wanted to let the three candidates for his office (Nixon, Humphrey, and Wallace) know of these talks. These talks would have ended the war likely six years earlier than they had, but because Nixon ran on anti-Vietnam platform, allowing for the war to end would certainly have essentially ended his 1968 Presidential Campaign against incumbent Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Neither Nixon nor Humphrey went public with this knowledge, because LBJ didn't want to let the public know that he had assigned the taping of both Richard Nixon's and the South Vietnamese's ambassadors phones. It is now also known that Hubert Humphrey chose not to go public with this knowledge because he believed he had a wide enough lead to crush his opponent, but instead lost in the election that would change the country's majority party until the 1992 Presidential Elections. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ebzbeda (talkcontribs) 12:13, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have been reading about this the past week and heard the tapes. Amazing. LBJ said a number of times what Nixon was doing with Ms. Chennault was treason. But you got one detail wrong at least from what I've heard. He didn't keep it back because he thought he had a "wide enough lead to crush his opponent" but because he could not reveal it without also giving away that he had bugged various ambassadors' phones/offices. Anyway, What about it? If it's not already in the Nixon/LBJ articles it certainly deserves an appropriately weighted mention, using highly reliable sources that are cited in the article for the content.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:41, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging an article for violating WP:NOTHOW?[edit]

Is there a template for tagging an article that is full of direct advice to the reader? Water bottle also contains many instances of directly referring to the reader - phrases such as "your water bottle" are scattered throughout the article. It was in much better shape (though far shorter) when I last looked at it - several months ago. If tagging it won't work is there a way to find out when the offending language was added and then revert it to before that point? Roger (talk) 13:46, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

{{howto}} is the tag I think you want. As for working out when the content was added, WP:BLAME might be useful. Yunshui  13:53, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like this is the edit you're concerned with. That's a long way to revert; almost a year's worth of contributions would be binned by reverting. A rewrite would be more appropriate. Yunshui  13:58, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think this question must be about Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/The_Organization_Workshop. I have no idea what that proposed article is about, it is the worst-written article I have ever seen. Although we do have an article on SevenHills Hospital & HealthCity, I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Brendan Hoban states that he "was of that branch fo the Bourke family that became known as the 'Heathfield' Bourkes, who base was at Heathfield House, in the townland of Gortatoor, a few miles from what is now the village of Ballycastle" (p. 12, Hoban, 2008). He was a descendant of Oliver fitz Richard Ruadh Bourke, and a brother of Walter Kittagh Bourke; Oliver's nephew, Tiobóid mac Walter Ciotach Bourke (died c. 1606) was the 21st Mac William Iochtar . Oliver second wife, Mary, was a sister of Tiobóid, and Mary's son, Ulick, had a son, Oliver, who married Elizabeth Rutledge. From this marriage came the Bourkes of Heathfield, the Palmer-Bourke and Paget-Bourke families. Descendants include Mary Robinson , President of Ireland from 1990 to 1997, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights , from 1997 to 2002, whose great-great grandfather was John Bourke of Heathfield, a brother of Charles. Little seems to be known about Charles's parents beyond their names, Rowland Bourke and Mary Cormick, and that they were of a branch of the Heathfield family known as the Crotty Bourkes, as they had property in the townland of Crott, Carrowcubick. Among their family were John, Charles, and Ulick, a Franciscan . H owever, Bourke's family possessed enough wealth to have Charles educated at the Irish College , Salamanca in Spain following being taught at a local hedge school . He was ordained in 1792. [ edit ] Baton Rouge He volunteered for service in Spanish Louisiana , becoming the first priest of Baton Rouge in 1792. Following an investigation into his conducted by the Bishop of New Orleans , he left Louisiana, returning to County Mayo in 1800. [ edit ] Red River Mission In 1811, he became chaplain for a proposed colony of Irish Catholics and Scottish Presbyterians at what is now Red River , Manitoba , Minnesota and North Dakota , initiated by Lord Thomas Selkirk . However, he left without permission of his bishop, Dominick Bellew. he returned home in 1812 having never reached Red River. [ edit ] Appointment of Peter Waldron In 1812, Bourke became involved with a dispute over the appointment of a priest from the Diocese of Tuam , Peter Waldron, who was to succeed Bishop Bellew. Upon Waldron's appointment, Bourke continued his opposition. In 1817 he published a pamphlet , Popish Episcopal Tyranny Exposed, which led to his suspension and - according to his own account - excommunication . He appealed to Pope Pius VII . [ edit ] Popish Episcopal Tyranny Exposed In the forty-eight page pamphlet, Bourke gave his reasons for his opposition to Waldron's appointment, but also pondered on wider questions: "That the lives of the Roman Catholic clergy, at this day in Ireland, as well as on the continent, are not much more correct than those of the clergy at the time of the Reformation , which Martin Luther inveighed against them, is a melancholy truth, which cannot be denied; and which ought to make a serious impression on the minds of those who justly appreciate our most holy religion, which may suffer at present, as it did formerly, from the severe scourge of one of its own members." (p. 172, Hoban, 2008) According to his biographer, Brendan Hoban: "Bourke could hardly set himself up as a model of priesthood and his disloyalty to the priests who stood up for him does him no service. ... The key ... to understanding Bourke's comprehensive denunciation of his fellow clergy ... is that Bourke had conformed to the Established Church and the main readers of his writing were his now fellow Protestants ... So Bourke's comments have to be placed in the context of the cut and thrust of the Bible War, what Desmond Bowen called the 'Protestant crusade in Ireland', the evangelical campaign organised by fundamentalists in the Church of Ireland to convert Catholics in a 'Second Reformation.'"(p. 173, Hoban, 2008) Summing him up, Hoban describes Charles Bourke as "A flamboyant character" with "a very individual sence of humor ... He loved song, dance and drink and could be both the best and the worst of company. His great flaw was that he was always right. He was effortlessly tetchy and contentious, forver falling out with those around him, incapable of seeing other perspectives, incapable of compromise. ... He lived in interesting times and, from what we know of him, it was a fascinating adventure." (pp.181-182, Hoban, 2008) [ edit ] References A Melancholy Truth:The Travels and Travails of Fr Charles Bourke c. 1765-1820, Brendan Hoban, Dublin, 2008. ISBN 978-0-9540337-2-9 .

"Article Feedback page not enabled for this page"[edit]

Don't see anything in archive on this. On my watchlist, when I click Feedback from my watched pages, for a moment I see the page of feedback, but after a split second it's replaced by the message Article Feedback page not enabled for this page. The url I end up on is [1], which I think is correct.

It certainly used to work OK but it's been this way for at least a few weeks. I have some vague image that maybe I changed my Preferences a while ago but maybe not; anyway, I've reviewed my Prefs and don't see anything that might affect this, though of course there are now 8,345,298 preference items on 297 different tabs, so I might have missed something.

Any ideas? EEng (talk) 17:51, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Need pointers on dealing with "sneaky vandalism"[edit]

I recently reverted what appears to be a case of sneaky vandalism. This IP editor changed a significant value buried in a table by a factor of 100, and blandly claimed "fixed decimal point error" to hide his tracks. Deliberate and undetected damage to complex technical tables (or equations, which I've also caught and reverted) is a serious threat to the reliability of Wikipedia articles, and some vandals may be competing to see who can get away with the most subtle sabotage. The anonymous IP seems to be generating subtle as well as frank vandalism. I'm just wondering if there are any special measures to report suspected sneaky vandalism, or if there are any Wikipedia people investigating this insidious problem. Thank you for any guidance or pointers you can provide on this topic. Reify-tech (talk) 19:31, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Reify, a reply to your important question is in order. Persistent vandalism, sneaky or not, needs to be reported. This IP address has received numerous warnings and a couple of blocks in 2012. You cannot report users or IPs for vandalism if it is stale (i.e. no recent activity), what is sure though is that this address only makes vandalism edits. Old example
As they appear to have woken up, and their last three edits were all vandalism,[2][3] the correct place(s) to report this would be Administrator Intervention against Vandalism, and, in more serious cases, directly at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents.
In future, to make it easier for other editors to follow what's going on, check the history of user contributions and so on, use the following template for IPs. Thanks
CaptainScreebo Parley! 12:03, 22 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the pointers (I will use the handy template you pointed out). In the past, I've just reverted vandalism when I stumbled across it, and sometimes manually edited in a warning on the User Talk page when I thought it might do any good. I pretty much relied on Admins in the background to notice the reverts and to eventually act when appropriate. But recently I've noticed more rampant serial vandalism or sneaky vandalism (perhaps also because I'm better at detecting it now), and some of it was so bad that I've finally resorted to reporting it directly, as best I could. I've done a lot of editing of articles, but I'm a relative novice at fighting deliberate sabotage.
Could you point me to the tools experienced editors use when dealing with vandalism? I've gradually learned how to use some of the many article editing tools, but I think I might be ready to learn some more efficient methods for issuing warnings and rapidly reporting the most serious cases of sabotage.
Also, in the event anyone comes across any Wikipedia project groups or researchers interested in identifying and combating sneaky vandalism (as distinguished from the blatantly obvious type), I would appreciate pointers to them as well. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! Reify-tech (talk) 17:47, 22 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, good news, I don't know if it's pursuant to this exchange, or your reporting of the IP, but User:Materialscientist blocked the IP for 6 months for the same pointless vandalism of a technical table.
Also, I see you're using Twinkle, which I use as well, I see that you have used it to revert, and also issue warnings, are you aware that the first abbreviation in the drop-down from the TW tab when on user or IP talk pages, ARV, automatically files a report at WP:AIV? I used it yesterday for an IP vandal just off a 3-day block and less than 10 minutes later an admin had popped by and further blocked the IP for a week! Pretty efficient, although you must use sufficient warnings before this sort of action, especially for low-level stuff.
Otherwise, there are other tools such as Stiki or Huggle, I'm sure they have their info pages somewhere here, I don't know what their advantages are, I find Twinkle to be an easy interface to use, efficient, undemanding and so on. Maybe some other editors could advise the OP about more efficient vandalism fighting? CaptainScreebo Parley! 12:33, 23 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I do use Twinkle currently, but was unaware of the extra feature, enabled only on User Talk pages. I will read up on it. As for User:24.131.136.147, I'm glad they're blocked for a reasonable period; when looking at the numerous contribs, I was unable to find any evidence of non-vandalous edits, and the tone of the edit summaries was escalating in hostility. Thank you for the pointers! Reify-tech (talk) 13:55, 23 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting exchange, have you been to these places too? Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit, and Wikipedia:Recent changes patrol, these would appear to be places that NEED you! ;-) CaptainScreebo Parley! 17:37, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I enter information to add a person to the notable people from Midland, MI. under that catagory? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Midland Belle (talkcontribs) 21:20, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you're talking about adding someone to the list at Midland, Michigan#Notable people, then each entry is for someone who already has a Wikipedia article. If that article already exists, then you would simply click edit at the Midland, Michigan article and add to the section "* [[Name of article]], short description". If the person does not yet have an article, on the other hand, it would have to be created. If you plan on doing so, please note our general notability requirements, as supplemented by our notability requirements specific to people. See also our policy on articles about living person, this page about writing a first article, and if you are at all involved with the person at issue, please see our conflict of interest guidelines. coloured print[edit]

Why are some parts of articles in blue, some in red and some in black?Maade123454 (talk) 22:46, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The black sections of the articles are just normal text. The blue words are links to other articles. You can click on them and get an explanation of that word or concept. The red words are also links but to articles that have not been created yet. GB fan 22:52, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Footnotes[edit]

I was wondering how to add in footnotes properly for citations in HTML. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Csc104h1 (talkcontribs) 23:29, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are a number of way to do references. Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners may help. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 23:32, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
References use Wiki markup, not html. Roger (talk) 07:01, 22 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
