March 31[edit]

Finding the origin of the views an article has.[edit]

Is there any website or application that can be used to find what city or country the views an article has come from, or at least the IPs of said views? The closest thing I could find was this, but unfortunately it does not tell where the visits come from. Thank you in advance and I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this. --190.19.83.84 (talk) 00:17, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That is the only tool that I am aware of public access. Tiggerjay (talk) 04:23, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I expect anything other than aggregated statistics by general location (i.e. U.S. county at most) would be a violation of privacy policy. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 04:43, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Death of an editor[edit]

Hi, is there anywhere to mark or place a notice about the recent death of an editor. Thanks 02:55, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello. Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians would probably be the place for it. You may also want to read Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians/Guidelines and consider adding sources that they have died first before reporting it there. Thanks. Disambiguation page formatting[edit]

Hi, should the disambiguation page look like this? or this? As you can see, the first example uses == (2nd level heading) to group the entries while the second one uses (bold) to group the entries. So which one is correct? Hz. tiang 04:01, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The 2nd level headings is correct. I've been correcting a lot lately, it makes it much easier to view on a mobile device, as the bolding doesn't seperate them into sections. CTF83! 04:09, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thank you. Hz. tiang 04:24, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Both are actually "correct", the first one uses section headings because there is a large number of articles being listed and it would be very impractical to have to scroll through the whole page looking for a specific header, which is the reason why articles use section headings. In this same reasoning, it would look awkward if section headings were used to list only a few articles. Scarce2 (talk) 05:15, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation page[edit]

Hi, should disambiguation pages include images? Hz. tiang 04:48, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

They generally do not though I've never seen anything saying that they can't. And I don't know why they would need any. Dismas|(talk) 04:52, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look 105th meridian Hz. tiang 04:55, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think that page is much clearer with the two images. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:09, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, even if there was a rule, this would be a good example of WP:IAR.--ukexpat (talk) 14:30, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I like the images, too, though it would be cleaner to have a single map with clickable links on it. Or link from the captions of the two maps instead of repeating them in a list. Other dab pages for geographic names would benefit from this, too. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 07:45, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rolf Harris[edit]

Your article says he grew up in Wembly Park - an upper class suburb in , Perth, but anyone from Perth at that time knows he was called "the boy from Bassendean" a lower class suburb. Michael Bruynesteyn — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.105.107.125 (talk) 04:58, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rolf Harris article says he was born in Wembly Park, but grew up in Bassendean. The birth part is backed by a citation. If you have concerns about it, post a message on the article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 05:03, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Old Japanese Medical Images and Copyright Settings for Public Domain[edit]

I have uploaded a few very old photos related to Japanese medical works. Some of these images have warning notices on them. I am not sure how to fix these. All the images I have uploaded are in the public domain. They are all from books written much older then 100 years ago.

Please have a look at the Anma Wiki which I am in the process of heavily updating. The images are included in this wiki. Anma Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anma

I need help to know what I need to change so the images in question do not get deleted from the wiki.

Thanks, Yotsume (Billy) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yotsume (talkcontribs) 07:33, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You need to provide evidence that the images are in the public domain. You say "All the images I have uploaded are in the public domain", but you have not provided evidence of it. The books themselves are out of copyright – but do you have evidence that the images themselves are also out of copyright? My guess is that you copied them from 町の按摩さん.com. Maybe that site has a copyright release statement, but I can't read Japanese so I can't tell. Maproom (talk) 10:03, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at File:Ishinpō1.jpg. Your description, "A section from one of the 30 scrolls of the Ishinpō", is not enough to show that the scroll is old enough to be in the public domain. Is this scroll an original dating from 984 AD, or a later copy? Provided that the scroll itself is sufficiently old, I don't think it matters when the book was published or whether the images were uploaded to a blog site. Making a faithful copy of a 2-D object such as an [unrolled] scroll is not a creative enough act to give anyone a new copyright. See Commons:Commons:2D copying. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:57, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, John of Reading, for the link. So my advice above was wrong. I find it odd that if I scan an old document, then spend an hour digitally removing the wormholes and other imperfections, I have no copyright in the product of my labour; but if I point my digital camera at someone and click the button, I immediately hold a copyright in the image. But I see that that is the law, in the US and as respected by Wikipedia. Maproom (talk) 18:39, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes that scroll was written in 984 A.D. Again I have no idea where more copyright info is to be provided. When I edit an image it is very unclear how to provide that info. Again, all the images I am uploading are 100s of years old. Yea I will get back to this after Easter and ask for more detailed instructions. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yotsume (talkcontribs) 12:38, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have edited that image page to use the "PD-Japan" template, which I think displays a better description of why the image is public domain. The best place to ask for advice on this would be the Copyright help desk at Commons. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:41, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

LOVE KORAH BABU VARGHESE — Preceding unsigned comment added by Korahlucky6 (talkcontribs) 12:59, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Korah! Sorry, but Wikipedia does not have articles about people just because they have a name that turns up in Google. Wikipedia only has articles about people that have been discussed in detail in independent reliable sources - you can read more about this at WP:42. It would be better for you to work on improving articles about topics other than yourself. Good luck! --Demiurge1000 (talk) 13:54, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but the page User:Korahlucky6/KORAH BABU VARGHESE will not be suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia for many reasons, some of which are at WP:NOT and WP:BIO, in addition to many issues with style. The personal information and family pictures (including minors that may or may not be yourself), in particular, are not suitable for an encyclopedia (any more than they would be for inclusion in the Encyclopedia Brittanica or the Oxford English Dictionary), I would urge you to remove the page and the images. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 07:29, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

lost article within wikipedia[edit]

Some weeks ago I submitted a bio article to Wikipedia for Aaron Mazie, the most talented musician of our time. It is very sad and wrong that there is no information out there and I do not have the article saved, although it was very accurate for when it was written. Please retrieve the article so that I can add to it and resubmit it.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aamazie (talkcontribs) 15:51, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft seems to be at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Aaron Mazie. It currently has no references from independent reliable sources, so it won't be accepted in this form. You can read WP:42 for more details. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 15:54, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's been deleted for "G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion" which is why that link is now red. RJFJR (talk) 00:50, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A lot of leeway is given to articles in AfC space. I'm not entirely sure why you deleted it. Ryan Vesey 00:51, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(Sorry I was unclear: I didn't delete it, I just reported that it had been deleted.) RJFJR (talk) 16:26, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Based on your username, I'll also assume you are the subject of the article, in which case you also need to read WP:AB and WP:COI. In general, it is not acceptable for you to write the article about yourself. There are lots of places on the web that are specifically designed to promote you, and let you promote yourself, for free. Wikipedia's purpose is entirely different. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 07:15, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

BLP[edit]

Hi, i have a article about some guy (not on english wiki). he has been convicted of threats of violence but he would not want me in the article writes that he is head of a company or he gets a lawyer. Is it in discrepancy with http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution:Biographies_of_living_people that you do not have to mention which companies they head for? --80.161.143.239 (talk) 16:30, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot guess where the article is, or who the guy is, which makes it hard for me to understand your question. I think that if a Wikipedia article says that someone is head of a company, it ought to say what company. A statement in a Wikipedia article that a guy has been convicted of threats of violence would be accepted only if there is a reliable reference for it; what the guy wants would not be relevant. If you don't want this guy to know that it's you writing about him, then you should register an account with Wikipedia: the source of registered accounts cannot be traced, but IP addresses can often be traced to regions or even to individual buildings. User Page section edits[edit]

Is it possible to hide the section edit link on a particular page (in this case, my user page)? Revolution1221 (talk) 17:47, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yep! __NOEDITSECTION__ is what you're looking for. —Theopolisme (talk) 17:55, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You should add __NOEDITSECTION__. Ruslik_Zero 17:57, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note, __NOEDITSECTION__ applies to the whole page... You can't disable editing "a" section per-say. The only way to disable "a" specific section is to create a pseudo section header <div style="margin-bottom: 0.6em; font-size: 150%; color: black; background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% transparent; font-weight: normal; overflow: hidden; padding-top: 0.5em; padding-bottom: 0.17em; border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(170, 170, 170);"> ...YOUR CONTENT HEADING... </div>. If you want the section to be referable from another page, just use the {{Anchor}} Template. Just a note, I added <nowiki> tags around __NOEDITSECTION__ in your comment above, since it broke the whole page without them and it took me forever to figure out where the section edit buttons went :). --NickContact/Contribs 21:41, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Conrado Colina Tudtud[edit]

How may I add a reference - Ma. Bernadette A. Parco, "Museo sa Sugbu: Rare Pieces of Old Cebu", Cebu Daily News, August 17, 2008, p. 4? in the part of the article where Conrado's ice drops were mentioned. How may I add links to the page - such as Philippine Airlines Flight 206, which details a relative of Conrado Tudtud - Catholic Bishop of Marawi Bienvenido Tudtud - and Museo Sugbu - where Conrado Colina Tudtud's memorabilia are housed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by April May Tudtud Ramos (talkcontribs) 18:29, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Try putting your references inside "ref" tags like this: <ref>Ma. Bernadette A. Parco, "Museo sa Sugbu: Rare Pieces of Old Cebu", Cebu Daily News, August 17, 2008, p. 4</ref>. Then place the reference in the article where it supports the text. For links, you can put them in "ref" tags too, or you could put them in a new section titled "External links". Hope this helps! Missing links golf course on your web page[edit]

Please note. Formby Ladies Golf Club (1896) is a challenging 18 hole links course set inside Formby Golf Club links. I was disappointed to see you had missed this lovely course from your list of courses in the North West of England. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.44.8.98 (talk) 19:10, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you'd like to suggest that the article be written, you can list it here, in Requested Articles. If you'd like to write it yourself, you can either list your proposed article on Articles for Creation, or create an account so that you can create it yourself (using the article wizard might help). --NickContact/Contribs 21:02, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Image link[edit]

Is it possible to make an image so that clicking on it will link you to a page? Revolution1221 (talk) 20:51, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

They did it with the map at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:FOP Click a country on the map and it jumps to that section. Beyond my skill to do it here though.--Canoe1967 (talk) 20:56, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! There is a "link=" parameter that can be used to make the image link to another page, external URL, etc. See Wikipedia:Picture tutorial#Links for the best explanation of how to do it. --NickContact/Contribs 20:58, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just keep in mind that you can't use |link= and |alt= for the same image. User:Technical 13   ( C • M • Click to learn how to view this signature as intended ) 21:31, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
