Article about West Siberian Laika[edit]

I have found an article about West Siberian Laika written by Vasko Raichev. It is full of errors and misleading statements about the breed and its history. I can write my own article on this subject based on my own experience and sources published in Russian. I have registered and can log in, but still have no idea how to get my article about West Siberian Laika in Wikipedia?

Vladimir Beregovoy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ufimych (talkcontribs) 00:49, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article does seem to have some issues and they seem to be long standing. I made a very minor correction to at least allow it to render more correctly. I think you have a slight misunderstanding of how Wikipedia works which is very common for new users. Article don't belong to any one author and are actually a community effort meaning anyone can edit any article. There are exceptions to this for administrative reasons, but they are not many. So what you want to do is edit the current article to improve it, you should see and edit towards the top of the page and at the start of each section that will allow you to change the source for the page. I provided you a welcome message on your talk page that also has a number of useful links that allow you to better understand how Wikipedia works.
As for using foreign language sources it is better to use English sources if available as most editors on English Wikipedia don't speak Russian, making it hard to verify that the article is correct, but if no other sources exist, then you can include them. See WP:A for more information about this.
Thanks for joining Wikipedia and helping improve the project. XFEM Skier (talk) 07:41, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The copyright violation issue now posted on the Wikipedia page “Milan Zeleny” I created on October 28th Comment[edit]

(Zhuyuxiang (talk) 01:15, 16 November 2013 (UTC))[reply]

I first created the Wikipedia Page "Milan Zeleny" four weeks ago https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milan_Zeleny. But then administrator Palu https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedista:Palu posted the copyright violation issue on my page on October 28th and all the related contents on that page have been blanked.

Right now the fact is first: I really get the permission from the copyright holder, which is my professor, Milan Zeleny. He allows me to post this text and photographs describing biographical information, personal CV information, professional information and professional publications on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Actually the point of that Wikipedia page I created is to introduce the biography for this Czech-American economist.

Second, Professor Milan Zeleny has already written the Permission Request Letter and sent it to permissions-en@wikimedia.org two weeks ago. But there is no reply from OTRS until now. Milan Zeleny wrote this letter in reference to the template on Wikipedia: Declaration of consent for all enquiries. As for the problem of the modification of the text from source http://ebooks.iospress.nl/Download/Pdf/29019, Milan Zeleny is copyright holder of the source book. In his Permission Request letter, he said he agree to contribute and publish that work under the free license "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported" and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).

Basically, I don't think there is still the copyright issue on the Wikipedia page of "Milan Zeleny". The reason is that I did research on the Wiki policy of Donating the copyrighted material and Milan Zeleny's permission letter meets the Wiki requirements.

How long should it take for OTRS respond to the permission from the copyright holder Milan Zeleny? In addition to OTRS, who is also responsible for "Donate Copyrighted Material" issue in Wiki? SO I COULD send the permission letter directly to other administrator so that they can help me revert my original page assuming that they check and approve my permission request?

(Zhuyuxiang (talk) 01:15, 16 November 2013 (UTC))[reply]

Zhuyuxiang - The copyright issue noted by Palu seems to have been resolved. The "text and photographs describing biographical information, personal CV information, professional information and professional publications" donated from Milan Zeleny is not usable in the Milan Zeleny article since it is not independent of Milan Zeleny. In other words, even if OTRS recognizes permission from the copyright holder Milan Zeleny, the material from Milan Zeleny is not usable in the Milan Zeleny article since it is not independent of Milan Zeleny. The article was stubbed 5 November 2013 by Ymblanter.[1] You reverted TheRedPenOfDoom.[2]

WP:CREDENTIAL does not say anything about not using post-nominal letters indicating academic degrees in infoboxes and there was no edit summary as to why they were removed from the infobox. If you have photographs of Milan Zeleny, those would be great for the article. Please upload any photos of Milan Zeleny to Wikimedia Commons. -- Jreferee (talk) 10:37, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An easier way to access Diff comparison page[edit]

Hey, is there an easier way to access Diff comparison page? Using AJAX is prefered, such as MediaWiki:Gadget-QPreview in Commons. --Capim Dourado (talk) 02:24, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I use the "show improved diff view" button at the bottom of each diff page. To get this button, go to Preferences>Gadget and put a check next to "wikEdDiff, improved diff view between article versions (not needed if wikEd is used)". -- Jreferee (talk) 10:59, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question about the WP:MOS[edit]

Does anybody know what the procedure is for making a change to Wikipedia's Manual of Style? There's a bit of disagreement over the use of the capital D when referring to Deaf culture and the Deaf community. This is how the Deaf community identifies, in the same way as Gay culture or African-American culture, etc. Currently there's an RfC on the talk page at Deafness. But I'm not so sure an RfC is the proper venue for something like this. Any suggestions, opinions, would be most welcome. Thanks. Malke 2010 (talk) 04:25, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Malke 2010 - An article talk page RFC won't change guideline Manual of Style/Capital letters. You can try an RFC at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters and bring attention to it via a note at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Wikipedia style and naming and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Long term editors who are interested in policy/guidelines hang out at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy). I suggest starting at Village pump (policy) first and ask something like 'I'm interested in changing policy/guideline so that Wikipedia uses a capital D when referring to Deaf culture and the Deaf community. At this time, I'm looking for help with how I can best present arguments that will provide a productive discussion. What are several arguments that I might make consistent with policy/guidelines in this area and what are the policy/guidelines that would need to be changed to make this happen.' -- Jreferee (talk) 10:17, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't think an RfC would have the force of policy which is why I came here. Thanks for the info. I left a note at the MOS and editors there have started to comment. I'll comment at the Village pump as you suggest. Appreciate the help. Malke 2010 (talk) 15:24, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Malke 2010 I would focus less on how the Deaf community identifies itself and more on how reliable sources have handled the issue. If the New York Times or other major news source or scholarly books use capital D when referring to Deaf culture and the Deaf community, that is much more persuasive in Wikipedia than pursuing a position -- how the Deaf community identifies itself -- that editors likely will see as violating WP:NOTADVOCATE. You probably have seen reliable sources using the upper case "D". Put together a list of those sources, ideally add a URL link to their manual of style policy stating to use the upper case "D" as you propose, and then argue that Wikipedia needs to use the upper case "D" if it expects to more accurately convey a thorough and representative survey of the relevant literature (see this) in this area since that is what the reliable sources are doing. -- Jreferee (talk) 15:42, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Jreferee:, Yes, you're right, I hadn't thought about the adovcacy bit. That's bad. But that wasn't my intent. I was simply equating the issue with Gay culture, Gay community, Irish culture, etc. and it just seemed like the same would apply to Deaf culture since that's how they handle it. I did do a quick Google search earlier and I found some sources that use the capital D in Deaf person, Deaf culure, etc. I listed them on the Deafness talk page. But there's an editor there insisting that only when the WHO, the NIH, and the UK government sanction the use of the big D, can it be used on Wikipedia. I think if the New York Times and academic sources are using it, we should consider doing the same. Btw, I posted on the Village pump using your exact quote above. I will post those sources at the Village pump. Malke 2010 (talk) 16:39, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
When Wikipedia consensus says to use the uppercase D for Deaf culture and the Deaf community, it be used on Wikipedia. Getting consensus requires pursuing a position ground in existing Wikipedia policy/guidelines in a respectful and considerate way. You will receive many replies and the trick is to know which to respond to, if any, and which to not respond to. There are numerous reliable sources worldwide and WHO, the NIH, and the UK government are merely a small part of that community. The Wikipedia standard to apply in this situation is not whether "the WHO, the NIH, and the UK government sanction the use of the big D." Focus on which reliable sources are using the upper case "D" and maintain the position that they are using it, so Wikipedia should, particularly since using the uppercase "D" fits in with existing policy/guidelines and past consensus discussions regarding using uppercase letters for a group (which you need to identify). -- Jreferee (talk) 17:09, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ward Melville High School Alumni[edit]

Kenneth Eriksen doesn't appear to have an article about him on Wikipedia yet, which is usually a prerequisite for appearing in such a list. Why has my Wikipedia page not been published[edit]

The first article I wrote published no problem there. The next two, on documentaries can't be accessed when I Google them. I don't believe they have been deleted because I could not access them on Google from the get go. They have references they link to other pages so just wondering what the issue is. There is a message that says they have yet to be reviewed but would that stop it being published? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by MFM14 (talkcontribs) 06:01, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As soon as articles are created in Wikipedia article space (as yours were), they are 'published' as far as Wikipedia is concerned. We have no control over Google, and it may take time to discover articles here. AndyTheGrump (talk) 06:08, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Are you referring to JFK: The Lost Bullet and Living Broke in Boom Times: Lessons from the Movement to End Poverty? In your Google search string, add "Wikipedia" as in "JFK: The Lost Bullet Wikipedia."[3] The Wikipedia pages are only one day old. When enough time passes, you may not need to add "Wikipedia" to the Google search string. -- Jreferee (talk) 09:59, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Olton Hall[edit]

Having recently completed a history of both the former Olton Hall and Olton Castle in the Solihull area, there is now much more detail available than Wikipedia currently offers. Also, the Harry Potter connection which has gained the Olton name, worldwide fame. In your Famous People section, I was surprised not to find mention of a gentleman born in the Hall, who subsequently (amongst much more) became Governor of Bombay and High Commissioner of Egypt.−109.104.102.41 (talk) 08:09, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome to improve Wikipedia articles if you can provide additional relevant information cited to reliable sources. If you are contemplating citing your own published work, please read WP:SELFCITE first. Bear in mind that original research cannot be included. - Karenjc (talk) 09:30, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In regards to detail available that Wikipedia currently offers, are you referring to GWR 4900 Class 5972 Olton Hall or Oulton Hall? Also, Wikipedia does not have a Olton Castle article (I did find Bolton Castle). What article has the Famous People section to which you refer to above? For the Governor of Bombay and High Commissioner of Egypt, are you referring to George Lloyd, 1st Baron Lloyd? -- Jreferee (talk) 09:56, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The OP is probably referring to our article on Olton, which has a section on its notable people. (At Wikipedia, we prefer "notable" to the more subjective and transitory "famous". See Wikipedia:Notability (people).)--Shantavira|feed me 10:29, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Need assistance with Wikipedia page of Professor Cuno Pumpin please[edit]

Hello,

We are having troubles figuring out how to fix the errors on the English version of Professor Cuno Pumpin's Wikipedia page. There is a German version which is fine with no problems. A note on the English version however indicates the following "This article has multiple issues...".

Is there anyway we can obtain some assistance in fixing these multiple issues please ? We would be eternally grateful.

Thank you in advance

A start would be to delete each sentence in the article body that does not have a reference attached to the end of it. -- Jreferee (talk) 13:37, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
After you do that, then go through each Google Book mentioning Cuno Pümpin and summarize it into the Wikipedia article. I also added some references to the bottom of the article, and you can go through those as well and summarize them into the biography. -- Jreferee (talk) 13:59, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Articles temporarily rescued from db-g13 deletion[edit]

Dear editors: The big backlog of old AfC submissions is being "weeded". All of the editors who created the submissions are being contacted and notified that if their old submissions haven't been worked on for six months they may be deleted. There were nearly 60,000 of these when this process was started! Some of the editors had just forgotten about their submissions, and started working on them again. However, the vast majority appear to be abandoned, and a bot has been nominating them for deletion a few at a time. There are about 42,000 left. A few of the AfC reviewers have been checking them, and "postponing" deletion of ones in which a substantial effort has been put in on a potentially notable topic (Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/G13 rescue ...help, blub, blub...). In six months these submissions will be eligible for deletion again, so it's important that interested editors have a chance to adopt and improve them before then. Here's the list so far: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:AfC_postpone_G13 . I am asking willing editors to take a look at them, and adopt one or two, post info about them at appropriate Wikiprojects or other talk pages, etc. I left a message at the Article Incubator, but I understand that it's not that active these days. Is there anywhere else where it would be appropriate to post information about this? Thanks for any help with this giant project which could add at least 4,000 articles to the encyclopedia. —Anne Delong (talk) 14:19, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Miss California Teen USA 2013 Cassidy Wolf picture[edit]

How do I update a photo? I would like to updt to a photo of her crowning moment an replace the swimsuit audition photo currently being used. First of all, since the articel is about your daughter, you have a clear conflict of interest, It would be better if you did not directly edit it at all, but merely made suggestions on the talk page (Talk:Cassidy Wolf), disclosing your relationship as you make them. You may also want to register an account so that your IP address is not publicly disclosed with every edit you make.
That said, Wikipedia:Uploading images explains how to upload pictures to wikipedia. Note that you will need to release such pictures under a free license, which you probably cannot do if they were taken by a commercial photographer (9unless the photographer agrees). This means that anyone may reuse the picture, or create modified versions of it, for any purpose, provided that they attribute the source properly and usually that they allow the same rights to others.
Wikipedia:Picture tutorial describes how an image can be added to a Wikipedia article or other page, once it has been uploaded. DES (talk) 17:41, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. By the way, do not start lines off with a space, please. It doesn't indent them, it triggers a display mode intended for program code and other specialized purposes. I have corrected this entry. DES (talk) 17:25, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

United Methodist Church[edit]

I have been a Methodis my entire life. One of the main things that sets Methodists apart from other Christian denominations has been omitted from your article. EVERYONE is welcome to take the Sacrament of Communion in our church, whether you are a member or not. It is he Lord's Table, not a Methodist Table, and everyone is welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.230.212.156 (talk) 17:10, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You should mention this on Talk:United Methodist Church. It would be beter if you could quote a reliable source, perhaps a published church policy to this effct, not simply your own personal knowledge. DES (talk) 17:23, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A church policy published by the Methodist church (or any of its subsidiary functions) could not be used to support the claim that something "sets Methodists apart from other Christian denominations"- that is a self promotional claim. You would need to provide a third party ( preferably someone who has bona fides in comparative religion), who makes such an analysis.
A church document published by the church could generally be used as a source for the simple self-claim that "Methodists allow X" . -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 21:50, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Quite correct, I should have sdaid as much above. More over, my understanding (which may be limited as I am not a Christian of any variety) is that some other Christian groups have similar inclusive policies. DES (talk) 22:03, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is already in the article ("and practices open communion") and has been since at least 2007. Rmhermen (talk) 02:17, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

how to edit wikipedia[edit]

While there is a lot of information, I suggest that you read Help:Editing. In general, you click an edit link as you did here, and well edit. There is much in the way of formatting anf convention, but much of that can be safely ignored at the start. DES (talk) 19:21, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Search question[edit]

Is there a way to check all user names for a particular string (not at the beginning of the name)? I've looked at the Help page and don't see any way to do it. For example, if I search "user:*here", it returns all instances of someone signing an edit in which they used the string "here". That's useless to me.--Bbb23 (talk) 21:00, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

the relevant page is Special:ListUsers. It doesn't really do the kind of search you want. You could download the whole list, then search in an offline tool. Doing the downloads would take a while, but you would get your answer. Why do you want this information? Maybe there is an easier way to your goal. DES (talk) 21:17, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
How about a Google search like this, replacing "cinnamon" (picked randomly because there's a container of it in front of me) with the string.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:25, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That might be helpful, but depending on the string it might find many userspace drafts and sandboxes. Still, it's worth a try, good thought. DES (talk) 21:28, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Using the "real" string, Fuhghettaboutit's search, which I don't really understand, didn't work (turned up nothing, even though I know there are usernames out there with the string). DES, I don't mind downloading all the usernames, but is there any way to do that short of displaying 500 of them, downloading them, going to the next 500, etc.? As for my purpose, I'd rather not say.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:15, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The Google search may not work well if the string is not a separate word, as I gather it is not. If you searched for "urg" hoping to find both "surge" and "urgent" for example, the google search might not return the desired results. You can change the count in the url at listusers to a larger value than the interface allows. For example this link gets batches of 5000 at a time. i would advise not getting much bigger than that, or the http request will probably time out. Using that will be tedious, but I don't know a better way. Sorry. DES (talk) 17:50, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. The string is not a separate word. There's nothing to be sorry about. I appreciate your help.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:07, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

interwiki and interlanguage link[edit]

There does not seem to be an article on that wiki entitled "Desenvolupament de fractals mitjan". Additionally, you should generally use spaces instead of underscores in wikilinks. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 21:32, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Are you trying to link ca:Desenvolupament de fractals mitjançant el mètode de Mandelbrot? From Commons you can do it with [[:wikipedia:ca:Desenvolupament de fractals mitjançant el mètode de Mandelbrot]], or just [[:ca:Desenvolupament de fractals mitjançant el mètode de Mandelbrot]]. The latter works because Commons does not have language editions, and Wikipedia is the default target for interlanguage links. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:47, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
