Donations[edit]

Hello Wikipedia staff,

I've donated and thought you guys deserve more than my measly $3. I'm broke and that's all I could pay. Stuff even like a cup of coffee are unnecessary expenditures. I almost didn't donate out of laziness, and decided to send out this message instead of a question.

Most everyone owns a Gmail account. Most of us have Android OS's on some device and thus a Gmail account. If you ever purchased ANYTHING on it then you have your Google wallet setup.

I don't know how difficult it would be but Google play seems to be a logical option for payment. Also Steam since ALOT of us are geeks that visit this site anyway.

Also I don't know if you guys have done this yet but a voice assistant like Siri that would answer your Wikipedia questions would be amazing. It would be even easier to donate via the app. No digging for credit cards, quick as pulling off a band-aid.

Hello, and thanks for your support and your keenness to support further. The various ways you can give are listed at m:Ways to Give; but I think if you want to suggest other ways to give, you need to be making them to the Wikimedia foundation, as the people who read this page are (almost all) volunteer editors of Wikipedia, and have nothing to do with how the foundation runs. --ColinFine (talk) 20:43, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'll Take Care of You (song)[edit]

I'll take care of you (song): It is worthy to mention the performance of this song by Junior Wells an Buddy Guy. Is one of the best ever. It appears on the album "Pleading the Blues" (1979) --5.54.201.13 (talk) 10:12, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"It is one of the best ever" is a strong opinion, which we do not allow on Wikipedia.--A Wild Abigail Appears! Capture me. Moves. 18:46, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That is to say, opinions are not allowed in articles unless they are quoted from reliable sources. If you can find a reliable source| which talks about the song, you can probably then add it, with a citation, to an appropriate page. (You haven't indicated which article you propose adding it to). --ColinFine (talk) 20:43, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think the editor is proposing to add to I'll Take Care of You (song). Dwpaul Talk 21:39, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

garyn preen wiki page[edit]

Hi, My name is garyn preen and i seem to have a wikipedia page about myself with alot of information about myself which i am not happy with. I would like you to remove this page or at least direct me or give me some contact details of someone who can help me further. Hope to hear from you soon. Garynpreen (talk) 10:32, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The page is at Garyn Preen, and at first glance the information does seem to be supported by references to published reliable sources. You don't have a veto over what appears on the page, but if you believe that it is inaccurate you ought to read about conflict of interest and then post your concerns at Talk:Garyn Preen and support your concerns with references to published reliable sources. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:39, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There does not appear to have been any attempt to discuss on the article talk page, Talk:Garyn Preen. Any information that is not supported by reliable sources should be deleted as per the biographies of living persons policy, but, as noted above, the information here does appear to have been reliably sourced. If the original poster considers the information incorrect, they should discuss on the article talk page. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:52, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Procedure for removing an NPOV tag[edit]

I have been unable to find clear information on this from Wikipedia help pages or FAQ pages:

What are the specific steps than can be taken to remove an NPOV tag from a Wikipedia page?

There is a specific page which has an NPOV tag dated July, 2014. I would like to remove that NPOV tag. I have read that page, and read the talk page about its NPOV issue. It seems clear to me that all the issues presented on talk page re that NPOV tag are either 1) obsolete (actually ALL the comments on the talk page PREDATE the NPOV date), or are 2) irrelevant to any legitimate NPOV concern, or are 3) very easily resolvable with very limited editing, or are some combination of these three things.

It is obvious to me how to spell out this out on the talk page, and how to then make the few requisite edits to the Wikipedia page.

But how do I, or how does anyone, remove the NPOV tag?

The Wikipedia page in question is this one: Immigration reform — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drewkeeling (talkcontribs) 17:28, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the presence of the tag is justified. The section Immigration reform in the United_Kingdom is entirely about support for making immigration easier. There is no mention of the pressure from UK voters for immigration to be made more difficult, leading to UKIP's recent newsworthy electoral successes. (Personally I sympathise with those who want immigration made easier. But this is irrelevant to my view that the NPOV tag is justified.) Maproom (talk) 18:24, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As to the technical aspect of your question, those messages are created by templates at the top of the article's wikitext, in this case a {{POV}} template. The templates are added and removed by any editor as they deem appropriate, and these changes are subject to challenge and discussion the same as any article content. For example, you could edit the article and remove the template, but you might meet resistance from one or more of the article's 50 watchers. I wouldn't suggest doing that before at least taking a look at Maproom's concerns. For a more complete explanation, see {{POV}}. ‑‑Mandruss  19:32, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As to policy, one way to obtain consensus on the removal of a tag (or on moving the tag from the article to the section) would be a Request for Comments. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:40, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The whole article needs some serious work on tone and NPOV, and possibly splitting into two articles.--ukexpat (talk) 17:00, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
per the instructions on the NPOV tag Template:POV, it technically can be removed if there are no discussions on the talk page that have identified specific issues that can be addressed. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 21:35, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure I am the person to make this edit[edit]

I have been tidying up the article on Ariel (clipper), and the "elephant in the room" is the section on the Great Tea Race of 1866. This deals with the event covered by The Great Tea Race of 1866, so really appears to be superfluous in the article about Ariel. Furthermore, it includes one glaring inaccuracy, which originates from the cited source (the error is that the "premium" of 10s per ton was shared among the crews of the two ships - it went to the owners - it was a lot of money: 10% of their earnings for the whole voyage!). This fact is clear from all the specialist sources used for The Great Tea Race of 1866.

However, since I wrote most of The Great Tea Race of 1866, I feel I have a somewhat partisan position on this. Is it appropriate for me to edit Ariel (clipper) so that the summary of the Great Tea Race is a lot briefer (to encourage the reader to follow the link)?ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 20:52, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The place to discuss would be the article talk page, Talk: Ariel (clipper). I see that there hasn't been any recent discussion there. The fact that you have worked on an article that is related to another article does not constitute a conflict of interest, but Wikipedia policy is that substantive changes to articles should be discussed on article talk pages.
