January 12[edit]

Dear editors: While checking through the stale drafts that are soon to be deleted, I came across this article. Checking to see if there were news reports about this person, I found quite a few up to July 2013, enough IMO to establish notability. However, in July there were suddenly a huge number of widespread reports. It seems that, in spite of a long career of positive contributions to society, the subject last summer was arrested in a serious criminal matter, and reports were numerous because of his prominent position. What is Wikipedia policy in a situation like this? Should the submission be made into an article and the fact of the arrest with citations be added near the end? Since the event received so much press, should the criminal matter be part of the lead? Or is there another way that Wikipedia handles items like this? —Anne Delong (talk) 01:46, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WP:1E would seem to be relevant here. Dismas|(talk) 02:18, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This person was already notable before the one event. Although the article as it was submitted last year didn't have enough references, I had no trouble finding more, such as this one.Anne Delong (talk) 04:40, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'd mention it in its own section if the event itself is significant enough, but I don't think I'd put it in the lead unless it itself was something he was known for in the sense that that may be all (or the first thing) a large percentage of people who know about him know (or if it were a large section of the article, perhaps). - Purplewowies (talk) 04:53, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the submission should be made into an article since the topic meets WP:GNG, even without the arrest sources. Moving Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Ben Levin to Ben Levin does not also require adding the fact of the arrest with citations be added near the end. If you are considering personally adding the arrest information noted in this source and this one, footnote 6 at WP:BLP notes "Generally, a conviction is secured through court or magisterial proceedings. Accusations, investigations, and arrests on suspicion of involvement do not amount to a conviction. BLPCRIME applies to low-profile individuals and not to well-known individuals, in whose cases WP:WELLKNOWN is the appropriate policy to follow." I'm not finding a multitude of reliable published sources about the arrest. The amount of external source information on an issue has nothing to do with the lead of a Wikipedia article. Per MOS:LEAD, a Wikipedia article lead merely summarizes the body of the Wikipedia article with appropriate weight. -- Jreferee (talk) 12:21, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you all for taking the time to help with this. I will create the article, and I won't add a section about the arrest unless I also find a reliable source about a conviction. —Anne Delong (talk) 22:53, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New added tool[edit]

Hi.

I am suddenly given a tool such that in every article I go, there is this gadget that has icons at the right side of the page, such as "Minimise", "Show metadata for this page", "Send appreciation to the authors", "Mark this page as unreviewed", "Add tags to indicate areas of improvement on this page", "Nominate this page for deletion", "Go to the next page in the queue".

Did I just enable a gadget? How do I disable it? Or that I am a reviewer (which I don't think so)? Is it in my preferences? If you replied, please inform me on my talk page. --Huang (talk | contribs) 05:33, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you currently patrolling new pages? This is a tool that helps with patrolling newly created articles - it's called the Curation Toolbar. You can read more about closing/re-opening it there. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:08, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Where to suggest ideas[edit]

Is there a way to suggest a feature to wikipedia? I've had certain ideas that 'd like to suggest, but cannot find ways to do so. Thank you for any response in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.117.66.158 (talk) 05:49, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear editors: As far as I know, Google usually doesn't index talk pages, but this one came up in a search that I was carry out. Is there something different about it from other talk pages? —Anne Delong (talk) 06:25, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What were you searching for? It doesn't appear (at least not on the first page) when I search for "British Rail Class 458". Rojomoke (talk) 08:37, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It was the 3rd of the 73100 results when I did that Google search. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:36, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see it on the first 3 pages. Might it be that those of you seeing the talk page had already been on that page? Samwalton9 (talk) 10:57, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Me too. I haven't been anywhere near that page but it is the third Google result when I do a Google search for "British Rail Class 458" with the quotation marks. If I search for it without quotation marks, the talk page is not listed.--Shantavira|feed me 11:09, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Appears as the 5th search result for me when I search for British Rail Class 458 wikipedia CaptRik (talk) 11:11, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Talk pages not indexed by Google indicates that NOINDEX magic word (WP:NOINDEX) is designed to take various namespaces/pages out of Google searches. Talk:British Rail Class 458 is not listed at Category:Noindexed_pages. Talk:British Rail Class 458 appearing first in Google search.[1] "Wikipedia talk:Help desk" appearing first in Google search.[2] Other Wikipedia talk pages brought up in a Google search.[3] Talk:Julia Bradbury is listed in Category:Noindexed_pages. Google searches for the talk page[4][5] do not bring up the page in Google. -- Jreferee (talk) 11:50, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I was searching for "British Rail Class 458/5" while adding references to an old Afc submission "Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/British Rail Class 458/5". I added the category >Noindexed pages" to that talk page. Should that fix it? or is there a template that should be on the page that adds the NOINDEX and is missing? or am I worried about nothing? I just thought that it was unusual. —Anne Delong (talk) 13:10, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Talk pages not indexed by Google is marked "superseded". The up-to-date description is at Wikipedia:Controlling search engine indexing. Talk pages for non-BLP articles are normally indexed, though Google seems to know that hits in articles are more important than hits in talk pages. -- John of Reading (talk) 13:40, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. —Anne Delong (talk) 22:57, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

is rock climbing done on artificial rocks? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 106.208.31.161 (talk) 08:27, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This would have been better asked at the Reference Desk, as this Help Desk is strictly for questions about using Wikipedia. That said, see Indoor climbing. Rojomoke (talk) 08:35, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

can i restart dowloading from where it failed[edit]

i try to download a .zip file using google chrome ,It was aproximatly half gb. it failed due to network error at last time. can i restart down loading from where it stoped? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.202.147.235 (talk) 11:38, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You may be able to get more detail on your question at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing. Sometimes when I restart downloads, the computer starts the download from where it stopped and other times it restarts from the beginning. I'm not sure it is something the user can control. -- Jreferee (talk) 11:54, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Non Commercial Use[edit]

I have found an image that allows for non-commercial use, I would like to use it, but all the information can be a little confusing about it. Is it safe to use in the English (UK) Wikipedia? I'm guessing I can place it under fair use, also Wikipedia does not make money off of images, so it's fair use anyway? Kaleidoscopic God (talk) 12:50, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You need to read the non-free content criteria. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:58, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Page history lists me as the first author of an article I've never seen before[edit]

Dear editors: Today I received a notification that an article called The Europe List had been reviewed. I didn't remember this article, so I checked the history, and found that the first recorded edit is of me moving a sandbox from User:Mr RD/sandbox to (Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Durga Charan Panigrahi. Apparently the user then made an article in mainspace D C Panigrahi (which sadly has only primary sources), and then moved the Afc submission to User talk:Articles for creation/Durga Charan Panigrahi where it was deleted.

At this point the user removed the redirect from his sandbox and reused it. This apparently left me as the original author of his next article! My question is, is this normal, and should anything be done about it? Likely the redirect should have been deleted when the page it pointed to was deleted. —Anne Delong (talk) 13:47, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted the article and selectively restored all but the first two edits. That left Mr RD as the creator of The Europe List.[6] -- Jreferee (talk) 16:13, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Anne Delong, sorry for the inconvenience. Earlier I did not know that after moving an article into mainspace from the sandbox, one has to propose the sandbox for deletion before starting any new work. So, I started work without deletion just by clearing the sandbox which created all this history mess. I ensure you that such things will not happen again. Regards Mr RD 17:56, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You shouldn't normally need to do that, Mr RD, as normally the first edit to your sandbox will have been yours. It appears that Anne was shown as the first editor because earlier edits had been deleted from the history by an administrator. You can, of course, merely clear your old sandbox and then start your next article in a new user subpage User:Mr RD/whatever your next article title is. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:29, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It was my privilege to visit the site of Chavin de Huantar during November 2012. I cant make any learned contribution except to say that I enjoyed it very much. Luckily for me I can't speak Spanish, nor understand it. I have an idea that the guide spoke a limited Spanish with a Kwecha accent. I said luckily, because I had to relate to my senses. What amazed me was the sense of experiencing the presence of those souls which never left the site! It was a feeling which I cannot put in words or forget. Even sitting here and thinking back I still sense the experience. I am religious and a Protestant. My religion is very strict with a German influence and quite the opposite. In other words we experience our religion in the mind and not in the emotion. That is why It was such a shock to feel these emotions. What amazed me in the whole of Coastal part of Peru is the resemblance with The Old Testament of the Bible. The search for that unknown (god), the believe in the after life, sacrafices , the agriculture, buildings , etc . And yet it was many many years before the birth of Christ, let alone the history of the OT. If I had the money, the education, and youth at my side I would have researched the parallel with the ancient Peru and the history of Abraham and Daniel. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.135.95.101 (talk) 13:54, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Samwalton9 (talk) 14:13, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I get the impression the OP understands where s/he is, and just wants to contribute some input about Chavin de Huantar based on personal impressions. If so, then (speaking to the original poster) I'm afraid Wikipedia doesn't publish reviews, opinions, recollections or new theories - anything that goes into an article needs to have been published first in a reliable source and referenced so other people can check on it. But I'm glad you enjoyed your trip. You could always try writing a summary of your visit at one of the travel review sites, such as Tripadvisor, which is a much more suitable forum. - Karenjc (talk) 15:17, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cartoon pornography depicting sexual acts? WTF?[edit]

Lose the pornography or the FCC is going to get a few phone calls. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.109.53.15 (talk) 18:17, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea what you are talking about - there are over 4 million articles on Wikipedia but Cartoon pornography depicting sexual acts isnt one of them. You will need to be more specific about your concerns if you wish to have them addressed, but you should be aware that Wikipedia is WP:NOTCENSORED. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:18, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And please also read No legal threats - Thanks - Arjayay (talk) 18:21, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Is that multiple calls from yourself or calls from multiple people? Just that calling them multiple times yourself might come across as harassment, and then the police will be getting a few phone calls. Darkwarriorblake (talk) 18:23, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That was not a legal threat. The OP is threatening to phone the FCC. I, at least, see no reason to deter him. Maproom (talk) 19:39, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If the FCC had enforcement power over Wikipedia (to the best to my understanding it doesn't) that would be a legal threat, and it is clearly intended to imply an attempt to imitate law enforcement action against Wikipedia. As such I think it probably comes under the "perceived legal threats" section of WP:NLT. That said, I doubt very much that any of Wikipedia's images could be prosecuted under obscenity laws in the US under the Miller test of the application of the First amendment. I am curious just what page or image the OP was objecting to. There was only one edit -- the one to this page -- made with that IP address. DES (talk) 20:17, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to disable a Wikipedia account in a specific location?[edit]

Hello,

ongoing problems with the style, problems are handled inside the german Wikipedia have culminated in a way, that I'm no longer willing to take part in that part of Wikipedia. Unfortunately Accounts have been unified, so I'm automatically logged into the german Wikipedia, if I log into any part of the Wikipedia universe. Is there a way to disable my account for the german Wikipedia only?

Regards --BerlinSight (talk) 18:17, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This may be wrong, but is vanishing an option on the German WP? If you change the username there (part of the vanishing process, at least here), it would cut it off from the SUL. Though I don't really see why it matters if you're not actually going to said Wikipedia. - Purplewowies (talk) 18:50, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the prompt reply. I'll keep that in mind, though it does seem to involve some noticeable amount of work for some administrators, which I don't think is justified. If vanishing is the only option, I think I'll better keep it the way it is and watch out if I run into any problems. What I wanted to avoid is to be presented with any of the german User menues when I change to a german WP page being logged in. --BerlinSight (talk) 19:31, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@BerlinSight: Can you expand on what you mean by user menus (maybe with a link to an example)? There may very well be a way for you to hide them at the German Wikipedia through preferences or through changes to your .js or .css pages.---Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:21, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Fuhghettaboutit: Sorry, I was too busy to be able to answer. Mainly the menu at the top of the page, the notifications, the watchlist and perhaps the edit buttons ... everything which is useful only if you intend to actively take part in the project. --BerlinSight (talk) 00:11, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
To hide the personal toolbar completely, you can use #p-personal { display: none; } on your css page. You could theoretically do the same thing with the message name for the edit button, but I wouldn't recommend it as it could make it very difficult to reverse, though it *might* be possible to replace the word "edit" with something like "view source" (I do not know how to replace the text (I've tried) though it's something I personally would like to know for another purpose). - Purplewowies (talk) 00:21, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Purplewowies: Thanks, that sounds useful, alas, I wasn't successful in finding information on how to use modified CSS with WP. Can you point me to any such piece of information or isn't there anything WP specific about it? --BerlinSight (talk) 02:46, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Replied on talk page because this is now archived. - Purplewowies (talk) 03:25, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You might be able to find more information through the links at Wikipedia:Unified login. -- Jreferee (talk) 05:42, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jreferee: Thanks, there are quite some links on the page but everything seems more concerned with merging accounts rather than splitting. --BerlinSight (talk) 00:11, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reference to site Briglin.com[edit]

Hi,I added an article a few years back, Briglin Pottery. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Briglin_Pottery - I am an avid collector of this now closed British pottery and I started the site to help other collectors.

I would like to add a link in the reference section to my own website. Briglin.com. Which is a free page dedicated solely to collecting Briglin Ceramics. It carries a wealth of additional free information on this subject.

I understand that there is an advertising issue but someone has added a link to Pottery Studio. My site is no different than theirs. I do and have not carried any advertising - I just supply free information.

Would it be possible to add a reference link to Briglin.com?
