Not sure what to do about this vandal[edit]

I've never reported a person before, let alone a special case like this.

Someone registered to IP 66.99.191.200 -- an IP address for a school -- vandalized the page I was working on. I know how to check user contributions, so I did; and they're a regular vandal. Their page is littered with warnings.

What's the most appropriate course of action (and who do I take this to)? meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 01:48, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The long history of vandalism means that many of the perps are now college graduates. In order for action to be taken against vandals, there must be a recent history of disruption. Since there is only one edit in the past month, there will not be any action taken.
The general process is when there is a disruption, give a warning on the page, escalating in levels. Wikipedia:Warning_templates#Multi-level_templates If within a reasonably short time (say a week or two) the warnings had reached level 5 and the vandalism continues, then you can make a report at WP:ANI -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 02:44, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree in one detail. It is preferred to report vandalism at WP:AIV. If the evidence of vandalism is clear, the vandal will be blocked, if there have been enough warnings. If the vandalism is reported at WP:ANI, then you will be told that you should have reported the vandal at WP:AIV, but the vandal will be blocked. WP:ANI is the proper forum to report disruptive editing that is not vandalism or where an argument can be made about whether it is vandalism. How to correct link rot?[edit]

Hello, I wanted to correct the link rot on the wikipedia page "Kushner Studios", however, when I go into edit, there is only one line which lists all the references:

 Fixed  @Meteor sandwich yum: Thank you  ~:71.20.250.51 (talk) 20:04, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome  meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 07:59, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

References[edit]

{{reflist}}

How can I correct the references from link rot when the actual links are not listed?

Thanks... Ajand

(i have slightly modified the formatting to allow better understanding and display-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 02:07, 17 January 2014 (UTC))[reply]
short practical answer - when looking at the article with the banner, click the blue link that says "Reflinks tools" and an automated tool will open up that can help convert the URLs. If you want to understand the "behind the scenes" you can ask for that, too.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 02:17, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I took the liberty of checking the page using CheckLinks (Kushner Studios) and there are no dead links. But the bare URLs should preferably be in citation format. ~:71.20.250.51 (talk) 02:45, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'll fix the page for you. meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 03:16, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

James E Mandler[edit]

James Mandler (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Hello,

I have contacted several times to inform that the article anout my Dad is substantially correct. However, the photo is of a teammate, not Jim Mandler. This is very hurtful to me and our family. I have previously sent the correction information, which is also available on tne U of Mich website. Please correct or, at least, delete the incorrect photo.

Thank you, Marilyn Mandler Little — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.177.167.226 (talk) 03:04, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Per the source http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/i/image/image-idx?id=S-BHL-X-BKT1942]BKT1942 it does appear that the wrong person is identified. I will remove the image from the article, but if someone who is more familiar with images could rename the image to reflect the actual person. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:12, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@TheRedPenOfDoom: Hey, I've meddled with that file a little bit. I changed the description and added a request that the file be changed to Robert Antle.jpg. UPDATE: Cropped image of guy second from left in the front row, #27. Uploaded. Integrated photo into article. Hope I got the right guy; Ms. Mandler did not provide us with more info (jersey #, for example). Regards, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:09, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:17, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The file is renamed now. Thanks for corrections. Widr (talk) 21:10, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tool to search user contributions[edit]

Is there a tool to search for text a particular user has added? Hack (talk) 05:14, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WP:Wikiblame? -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 06:21, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
WikiBlame and Article Blamer search for additions made to a specific page. I want be able to search for text added on any page by a specific user. Hack (talk) 06:46, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You can go to Special:Contributions, select User:, enter the name of that user into the search box to the right of the word User: and then select Namespace: all. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 10:41, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't really help. I'm looking for a particular piece of text added by a specific user. Hack (talk) 16:34, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thinking outside the box, but I've noticed that if you put entire blocks of text into Google it returns wiki articles that contain it. Provided the text you seek is still present in the page, you could try that? Chaheel Riens (talk) 19:00, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Alcohol content[edit]

I viewed your page on alcohol content and if you contact the Peterborough Regional Health Center in Ontario, Canada you will find that I, a 23 year old female survived with an alcohol content of 0.89% in may of last year. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.75.103.133 (talk) 06:14, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I guess you are talking about the article Blood alcohol content. I'm not sure where in the article such anecdotal evidence would go (the table does not say "Every single person who has a blood alcohol level above 50% will die from it", it gives the generally agreed levels from the references) but your experience could be added to the article if it has been reported in a reliable published source. Information which has not been published is generally not allowed in Wikipedia, especially if it relates to a living person. --ColinFine (talk) 13:21, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure that anyone with a blood alcohol level of 50% would not only be dead but self-embalmed ;-)
If we contact the Peterborough Regional Health Center in Ontario, Canada, they aren't likely to release patient information...and what's your point? --Onorem (talk) 14:10, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"Dear Peterborough Regional Health Center in Ontario Canada, we demand to review the full certified medical records of IP 76.75.103.133. Please send them immediately to the Wikipedia Help Desk. Sincerely, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:54, 17 January 2014 (UTC)" [reply]
Blood alcohol content#Highest recorded blood alcohol level/content already mentions several survivors with higher numbers. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:20, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

can you edit the referenxe I added[edit]

Please or....give me easier ways to edit from a cell phone. Thank you I'm not sure how to tell you which page it was but its in the reference section of American poetry contemporary American poetry. It said I didn't put them the right template for references although I think I went to that to start with but it got deleted somehow. Thank you. I entered this message from my cell phone, to. Perhaps there are some typographical errors as a result. Please forgive them. Jaeze — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaeze (talkcontribs) 06:59, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jaeze. When you made this edit, you removed the {{reflist}} template which is the one that lists all ref tagged references in the article and was the reason for the error. I've added it back in for you. Samwalton9 (talk) 08:03, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

sandbox in Wikipedia talk namespace?[edit]

I added my info box that I created in the sandbox on my main page and I got the following message:

"This sandbox is in the Wikipedia talk namespace. Either move this page into your userspace, or remove the {{User sandbox}} template."

I don't understand this. What exactly does Wikipedia want me to do? I would like the info box on my main page like everyone else.

Thank you. Richardalveranga (talk) 10:04, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Richardalveranga:  Done; You copied across {{User sandbox}}, which created the red text. I have inserted the infobox to your submission, and removed the template from it causing the issue. --Mdann52talk to me! 11:05, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Where do I nominate an image for deletion?[edit]

This arose during the Afd for Duni, Assam. Unless aliens have teleported the Washington Monument there, Duni Town.jpg is inaccurate, to say the least. (I've removed it from the article.) Or should it just be left alone and possibly used for Washington, DC? Clarityfiend (talk) 11:15, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The image is on Wikimedia Commons, and it has already been nominated for deletion there. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:21, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, good. Thanks. Clarityfiend (talk) 01:41, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is that modification a breach of 1RR rule?[edit]

I have undone 2 partial reverts within less than 24 hours. I was warned and self reverted the last one, although I guess it is not really a revert as for the 1RR rule. None of those 2 reverts are a full revert since I have not used the "Undone" feature.

  1. revert : Reverted undisputed content only, and the disputed content remains as the other side wants. In my opinion it should not be considered a revert for the 1RR rule. Is it correct?
  2. revert: This time I have reverted the disputed contents, so it should count as a 1RR revert for the 1RR rule, although it is a partial revert only. Is it correct?

Thanks Ykantor (talk) 12:57, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. WP:WAR states the following

An editor must not perform more than threeOne reverts on a single page—whether involving the same or different material—within a 24-hour period. An edit or a series of consecutive edits that undoes other editors' actions—whether in whole or in part—counts as a revert. Violations of the rule normally attract blocks of at least 24 hours. Any appearance of gaming the system by reverting a fourth time just outside the 24-hour slot is likely to be treated as an edit-warring violation. See below for exemptions.

You case falls under this, therefore is a violation of 1RR. --Mdann52talk to me! 13:32, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(e/c) :you should probably fully revert yourself. despite the common sense straightforward meaning of "revert", within the land of Wiki rules enforcement the terminology "revert" has a completely different meaning and your actions are probably in violation. They/we really need to start using a more appropriate and accurately descriptive wording. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:33, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that both actions count as a revert for the 1rr rule. thanks Mdann, TheRedPenOfDoom Ykantor (talk) 21:42, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting a page[edit]

Occasionally I come across an insignificant page that is an improper redirect, or for some other reason should be deleted. How do I do the deletion? Lou Sander (talk) 14:55, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Full width viewing of articles[edit]

I suspect I've done something stupid to my settings, but I can't figure out what...

Articles are now displaying on my browser at a set width that is significantly less than the width of my browser window, leaving a lot of blank white space to the right. Strangely, the search box and other controls still display properly at the extreme top right of the window, but below them is blank space that should be filled with brilliant, user-created content.

This problem only seems to apply to viewing articles. My watchlist and this edit page, for example, still use the full window. (Although I just checked, and my personal Talk page is, like the article pages, displaying with the narrow margins.)

Is there a way to force articles to take full advantage of the available space, letting me read more without scrolling down?

Thanks in advance for your help.

--JohnPomeranz (talk) 15:31, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect you are using one of the new Beta features:- Typography refresh.
You can disable this under "Beta features" section of your "Preferences", or, if you like the other features of Typography refresh, you can add some code to disable the maximum width - see mw:Talk:Typography refresh#Max width / Narrow pages opt out option - Arjayay (talk) 16:06, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, that fixed it. Must have clicked it by mistake. Thanks, Arjayay. --JohnPomeranz (talk) 16:49, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We have lots and lots of incomplete articles, because no one has yet added needed ionfo to them. Which specific article do you think info about the "Colac and District Darts Association" belongs in? Can you provide any published sources that discuss it? DES (talk) 17:08, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Adding to a closed discussion[edit]

Dear editors: The discussion Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/RfC for AfC reviewer permission criteria has been closed, with a comment that decisions have to be made about implementation. I have started a followup with this intent (Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/RfC for AfC reviewer permission implementation). I know that one is not supposed to add comments to closed discussions, but is it appropriate to add an announcement of a related topic at the end of the page? It's likely that most of those with an interest in this topic would have that page on their watchlist. Or, is there a better place to post an invitation to comment on this topic? —Anne Delong (talk) 17:15, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

how to create a box like the one in another article?[edit]

Looking for documentation for how to create a navigation box with links to prev, next, main article, etc (I'm just not sure what it is ... infobox? / template? / what-is-it?) like the one in the upper-right corner of the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans page? I thought it would be helpful to create the same kind of box for the pages for another annual race: 2013 24 Hours of Nürburgring Thanks Duckdreams (talk) 17:32, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It is a template Template:Le Mans Races which, looking at the code on the edit page looks fairly simple to modify, but I've been wrong before. However, please don't modify that one, copy it to a new template name first. - Arjayay (talk) 17:43, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How to use tl:DEFAULTSORT ?[edit]

I don't know what did {{DEFAULTSORT}}. According to explaination, this arrange to categories as alphabetical order automatically. But I do it in my user page, it didn't. What's wrong?--Reiro (talk) 18:41, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That's not what it does. If you go to one of the relevant category pages, such as Category:1963 establishments in England, you will see that User:Reiro is sorted under the letter "K" rather than "U" or "R". That's the effect of your DEFAULTSORT. But the guideline at WP:USERNOCAT says that user pages should not be in categories intended for articles. So once you've seen the category page, please remove them from your user page. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:17, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at one of the categories into which you have placed User:Reiro, you will find that the entry for User:Reiro is listed under K, as your DEFAULTSORT entry was "Kinks, The". --David Biddulph (talk) 19:19, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Please give a link to the explanation you refer to. {{DEFAULTSORT}} is mentioned in Help:Category#Sort order and several other places but I don't think any of them claim what you say. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:40, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
