January 28

[edit]

Dear editors: I am not sure what to do about these two articles. The editor of the first had help to create an article with lots of references and neutral language, but then never resubmitted the article. A new article was later created which has problems. —Anne Delong (talk) 04:52, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

one option would be to ask an admin for a history merge, then replace the spam content with the good version. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 05:06, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Adding and submitting an article

[edit]

Hi, I tried numerous times to write an article and submit it, yet I don;t seem to get anywhere. I have read the instructions, but its too confusing as to how the process works. Would REALLY appreciate a simple step by step instructions. I keep getting the "sandbox" and write my article there and then submit, but somehow it does not work. Hope to have some help from someone. Thank you. J. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.147.162.139 (talk) 05:05, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As an unregistered user, you cannot directly create any page, and the sandbox is merely for testing. You can request that an article be created at WP:RA or you can check out the criteria for the articles for creation process. Or you can create an account - its free, easy and more private than editing via your IP.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 05:10, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This question is the only saved edit by your current IP address. Did you use an account? What was the name or subject of the page you tried to save? Unregistered users cannot create an article directly in the encyclopedia but they can save a draft and submit it for review in the articles for creation process. what's the template for something that needs to be verified from a source that's already been given?

[edit]

self explanatory--need template to prompt someone to verify a claim from a book that's not available on line. μηδείς (talk) 06:26, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

{{verify credibility}}? Or perhaps {{verify source}}. - Purplewowies (talk) 07:40, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Medeis - You may want to post a request at Resource Request if want to verify the information from a book that's not available on line. -- Jreferee (talk) 13:24, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, both. I have already ordered the books in question. μηδείς (talk) 18:03, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Move a page

[edit]

Hello. Is it easy for someone to help me move this page to this one? The second page already exists but it redirects to the series' first season page. I would try to remove the redirect and make the move myself but I am not 100% sure how to do it and I don't want to mess things up. If this move is not necessary to be done, it's OK. Thanks in advance. TeamGale 07:06, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have placed the {{db-move}} template on the target page (the redirect) - see the diff. An admin would do the necessary deleting and moving soon. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:22, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, WP:RM is better for moves you are not 100% sure if they are right or not. --Mdann52talk to me! 08:23, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am sure it is correct but in any case the admin who responds to the template gets to make that call. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:28, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you all very much for your help. As I can see the move has already be done. And also thanks for the link. I didn't know there was a specific page for move requests. I'll use that one in the future if I need it. TeamGale 10:55, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Issue with "beta" Nearby

[edit]
Resolved

I don't know if this is the right place to report this but there is an issue with the "beta" nearby feature. This happens at all locations.

  • Enable "Nearby" in "beta".
  • Browse to a page with a geo-location, eg Eiffel Tower
  • click the nearby (blue box with location symbol)
  • will come up with a list of nearby locations, the first of which is Globe Céleste.
  • Click on the link, which displays a summary in the box with two links to "Read Page in full"
  • Both these links fail!

Examination shows that the links are to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%3Cspan%3EGlobe_C%C3%A9leste%3C/span%3E not https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globe_C%C3%A9leste with the <span> and </span> elements incorrectly included in the URL. -- Q Chris (talk) 10:29, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Though someone here may be able to help with your issue, if you think you've found a bug please report it here :) Samwalton9 (talk) 10:44, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I see it has |already been reported. -- Q Chris (talk) 10:53, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Contacting someone who has declined a submission

[edit]

Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Kevin Galalae

I'm new to this. I'm interested in a submission on 'Kevin Galalae' which has been 'declined' by user 'Cerebellum' I need to know how to contact Cerebellum so I can discuss his objections so that I can make the required adjustments to the submission so it becomes acceptable.Best wishes EcogrowEcogrow (talk) 15:39, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you have already left a message on Cerebellum's talk page. That is the right place. Maproom (talk) 15:49, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Go to User talk:Cerebellum, start a new section with [[Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Kevin Galalae]] and ask for advice. Best, Sam Sailor Sing 15:49, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Or leave a request for help at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Help desk.--ukexpat (talk) 14:30, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

DPL bot and corresponding tool

[edit]

DPL bot notified me of two pages linked to disambiguation pages on my talk page. However the Dab solver does not seem to be functioning at this time. I have also left a note at Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation pages with links#DPL_bot_and_corresponding_tool.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:47, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

DabSolver loads fine for me, but it says there is high rep lag, so revision will be outdated. --Mdann52talk to me! 16:46, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am getting blank pages for both of the dab solver links that have been recently placed on my talk page.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 17:54, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am on my Windows 8.1 laptop and have tried in FF and Chrome. I have a Windows 7 and an Android Google Chromebook. Both of my Window machines have 6 different browsers installed. My other browsers are MSIE, Safari, Opera and Netscape Navigator. Mdann52 What operating system and browser are you working from.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:38, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have now tested the old dab solver links from earlier in the month and they are not working either.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:51, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
More results. So far not working in Windows 8.1 in MSIE, FF, Chrome, Opera, Safari and NN; not working in Windows 7 in MSIE and FF.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 23:23, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation detector

[edit]

Hello, I'm active on it.wiki since years, and only in recent times I became active here too. On it.wiki there is an useful feature (available under Preferences) that highlights in yellow all the blue links leading to disambiguation pages. I was wondering if there is something similar on en.wiki too and, if so, how to activate it. Thanks in advance. Khruner (talk) 21:22, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure where to ask this...

[edit]

I had this idea to exclude {{selfref}} in print, and wanted to discuss it with people more knowledgeable than me, but am not sure where to go. The talk page has fewer than 30 watchers, and so I'm guessing if I post there nobody will read it. Do I propose this on the talk page, or is there some other place for discussion of this? meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 23:26, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe WP:VPR? ~HueSatLum 23:40, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks (don't know my way around this place just yet). I'll give it a shot. meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 23:59, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Meteor sandwich yum: It should already be excluded in print. Are you saying it prints for you? PrimeHunter (talk) 00:31, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, I didn't check it. I suppose I was looking for either the Category:Exclude in print or <span class="noprint">...</span>. It has neither (unless it's slightly different code, or Exclude in print is a supercategory than that listed). You know, I think I'll test it, right now, just to be sure. meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 00:38, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @PrimeHunter: False alarm. I printed out the first page of Abuse (which uses Template:selfref) — both as the "printable version" and just Ctrl+P — and it displayed fine. My knowledge of HTML isn't nonpareil; I guess <span class="plainlinks selfreference">...</span> must be equivalent to <span class="noprint">...</span>.
That's not it. {{selfref}} normally uses {{Hatnote}} which has class="dablink" and that class is excluded in print by MediaWiki:Print.css. However, if the rarely used inline parameter is present in a {{selfref}} then {{Hatnote}} is not used and the selfref is not excluded in print. Spelling is an example of that (I had to examine around 50 selfrefs to find an example with inline). PrimeHunter (talk) 01:03, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. I'm guessing we should change the code then? meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 01:06, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Moved to Template talk:Selfref
 – I'm going to link back to this thread and work on it there. I'll try the template's sandbox to see if I can fix this issue. meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 01:34, 29 January 2014 (UTC); (cr. to link 01:54, 29 January 2014 (UTC))[reply]
I don't see a reason to discuss it at Template talk:Hatnote. As mentioned, {{selfref}} does not use {{Hatnote}} when the inline parameter is present, so nothing in {{Hatnote}} can cause the selfref to be excluded in print in that case. And we certainly don't want hatnote formatting for inline selfrefs, so it is correct to not use {{Hatnote}} there. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:40, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shoot. Wrong one (corrected link). meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 01:54, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
