Antarctic snow cruiser[edit]

Hello I've come across with info on Antarctic snow cruiser. I would be very interested due to my ex wife father was the Navy helicopter Pilot who found the Snow Cruiser after it failed and was abandoned. . He also sent back a letter to my ex wife and her sister from Antarctica. Which is world famous with Smithsonian. Plus the Navy Helicopter Pilot was Howard Ordorff. Plus the Pilot cooked a frozen turkey that they found on the snow cruiser everyone said it was perfect. My ex wife name at time was Cynthia Orndorff and her sister's name was Pamela Orndorff. Later in the years Howard Orndorff was head of the Sand Point Naval Air Station: 1920-1970 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.17.213.141 (talk) 02:33, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have reliable sources to provide additional information? Was the letter published? If you have additional information that has reliable sources, you may post an edit request to Talk: Antarctic Snow Cruiser. If all that you have is an unpublished letter, it is unlikely that it would be considered appropriate to add to the article. Robert McClenon (talk) 06:42, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Footnotes#Footnotes:_groups[edit]

In Help:Footnotes#Footnotes:_groups, it says,

The syntax to define a footnote with a group is:

For the repeated note:

This is what I get:

I tried doing this in my sandbox (after it didn't work in the original article) and the didn't work in my sandbox either. You can check it out at: User:Mike_hayes/sandbox I put after all the entries with a section sign §, but none of them show up under . Could somebody help me please? Mike Hayes (talk) 09:39, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote a lot of the help page, but that part is not right; I have deleted that part. Look at the latter part of that section where it discusses names and groups. --  Gadget850 talk 10:45, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistent Nationality inserts and descriptions with famous people.[edit]

Hello there,

This might seem like a trivial observation but I thought it worth asking the question as there does not seem to be any consistency in relation to nationality and how it is displayed on famous people's pages.

As an Australian, I enjoy reading Wikipedia profiles of Australian actors and actresses and seeing all the films they have been in. I have just viewed a number of famous actor's pages and I have noticed that there seems to be an inconsistency in the way that Wikipedia allows contributors to describe where actors were born and now live/reside. For example:

1. Naomi Watts- In the first line of her page it states she is an "English" actress. I have no issue with this as she was born in England and a few years ago identified herself as English and not Australian, despite having grown up her. So be it.

2. Russell Crowe- Again the first line of his page it states he is a New Zealand actor. I accept he was born in NZ but probably now considering himself more Australian, as he has lived here for 35 years, owns a football team here and has an Australian accent.

3. Mel Gibson- As a contrast the first line of his page just says he is a "actor" without specifying nationality. It is not shown in the box on the right hand side either which is presumably where almost "indisputable" facts go about someone, like their date of birth, full name, children and partners etc. I think that this is where the facts about where someone is born should be, along with another heading that says "Residence" or "Current Citizenship".

In Mel Gibsons case he was born in the USA, rose to fame in Australia as an Australian, then moved to the USA where, I think, he now lives and works. So he is an American, but many casual visitors might think that indeed, Mel Gibson, is Australian, when he is now not.

4. Nicole Kidman is similar to Mel Gibson, except that as far as I know she still considers herself Australian and has a home in Australia.

I use these 4 actors as good examples of the inconsistency in relation to the clarity of a subjects nationality and residence on Wikipedia. These are just 4 examples but there are probably thousands of similar ones where someone has created a page and proclaim a famous person's nationality in the first line and others, like Mel Gibson where the information is deeply embedded in the article.

Anyway, as I said I know its not very important, but I have never made a suggestion before, so hopefully it can assist with future clarity in articles. Finally, I wanted to let you know I think Wikipedia is great and it is a wonderful resource. Keep up the good work! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Astralman88 (talkcontribs) 11:29, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The general principle is that we describe people as they describe themselves, provided that such description is appropriately referenced. For example, Christian Bale describes himself as "English" even though he was born in Wales (see the talk page for the reams of discussion on that one).--ukexpat (talk) 12:19, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You have enumerated many of the reasons that many editors think that "infoboxes are evil" and they have certainly led to controversy. They invite black and white statements that are often better explained in their true context in the prose of the article. SpinningSpark 15:56, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Error in 'Australia–Papua New Guinea relations'[edit]

There is an error in the 'Australia–Papua New Guinea relations' article The map incorrectly identifies Papua New Guinea as including the Solomon Islands. Located here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia%E2%80%93Papua_New_Guinea_relations#mediaviewer/File:Papua_New_Guinea_Australia_Locator.png Best, Conrad — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cjmolden (talkcontribs) 14:13, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reporting this. I will correct it – within the next eight hours, probably. And for my own use, here is a link which goes to the actual image's page, not to the horrible "Media Viewer" which I thought I had seen the last of when I disabled it from my Preferences. Maproom (talk) 15:50, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Incidentally, the best place for such requests is the Map workshop. But I was pleased to pick up this nice clear request from here – many of the requests made there are much less clearly specified. Maproom (talk) 20:19, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion from last year[edit]

Can someone help me find a discussion from last year before mid October about using filesharing services. I think I asked here and got redirected to another location to make inquiries.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 14:16, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You have never asked a question containing the word "filesharing" on this forum. What was your question? SpinningSpark 16:19, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Spinningspark thanks for looking into this. I was trying to find out about what the current prominent filesharing software was. I have reformated the computer that I put that software on and don't recall what it was. I the 2013 equivalent of Limewire or whatever. I can't figure out where I asked about it and what the response was.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 22:36, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I found this but there were no responses. I also didn't find anything about file-sharing with your name and that approximate date in the Computing reference desk archives.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:43, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cancel redirect from sandbox[edit]

Hi all, I have just created a new page by moving it from my sandbox. Now when I go to my sandbox, I am redirected to the page I created. How can I cancel the redirect so I can start new pages in my sandbox? Thank you for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lucieaudibert (talkcontribs) 14:33, 15 July 2014 (UTC) Lucieaudibert (talk) 14:33, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Click on the link in the "Redirected From" on the page, that will take you back to your sandbox with a redirect=no at the top, when you edit *that*, you can just delete the "#redirect whatever"Naraht (talk) 14:43, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Lucieaudibert. You can also start a new article by creating a sub-page in your user space, such as "User:Lucieaudibert/Name of article". This is handy because you may want to work on more than one page at a time, and it prevents old redirects from previous articles showing up in the history of the new article. —Anne Delong (talk) 12:03, 16 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for Deletion - unresolved[edit]

Last month I nominated several articles for deletion (Sarah Sharp, Slim Richey, Jitterbug Vipers) and the request for a decision was never resolved. What happens from here? The tags are still on the pages and have been for the month. Upjav (talk) 16:12, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The AFD was never transcluded to the AFD log. I have now done that, it will run for 7 days. GB fan 16:26, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

biography[edit]

hii, I want my biography in the wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Harsh Bangari (talkcontribs) 17:02, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please read WP:Autobiography, WP:Conflict of interest and WP:Notability and consider whether you merit an encyclopaedia entry. Rojomoke (talk) 17:12, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Have you read the general notability criteria and the criteria for notability of people? If you have read those criteria, you should go to Requested Articles. Please also read the conflict of interest guidelines, which strongly discourage writing or editing an article that directly affects you, and specifically the autobiography policy, which strongly discourages writing an autobiography. Info box, sufficient edits for publishing, footnote descriptions! Help![edit]

To Whomever Might Be Able To Help Me!

I want to ask about how to put the “labels” next to the citation footnotes at the bottom of a wiki page (for additional description etc). I put the numbered sources but when I view them below, there is nothing next to the numbers.

I also want to ask about how I can add another section such as “credits” to the info box on the upper right (first coding sequence). I have tried and reused successful coding but am unable to make it show on the final page. My coding and page views are as follow:

And..one last thing-I want to ask if I have a sufficient number of edits and proper sources in order to publish this page and add photographs. Please let me know what additional steps I might need to make in order to move forward with the publishing.

Thank you for all of your help!

Best, (User:Claudia Caporal) p.s. how can I get “User” to go away…or will it just disappear when I am able to publish my page?

@ClaudiaCaporal: Unfortunately, you are strongly recommended not to write an article about yourself. Please read Wikipedia:Autobiography for more information. Piguy101 (talk) 17:42, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Note that the user page draft at User:ClaudiaCaporal has been deleted as overly promotional. Also note that if you are not Claudia Caporal your user name is in breach of our user name policy, see Wikipedia:UN#Real names.--ukexpat (talk) 18:35, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

City and Community Entry should be City & Community[edit]

Hello. I have tried to edit the entry on City and Community... this is a journal published by the American Sociological Association, and the official name/title of the journal is City & Community (not City and Community). I can get into the edit section, but this does not allow me to edit the title of the entry. How would we do that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ray Hutchison (talkcontribs) 19:20, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved it for you. But I fear that the City & Community article may be deleted, on the grounds that it does not do enough to establish the journal's notability. Maproom (talk) 19:46, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I see that the article was created by Liz617, who specialises in creating poorly-referenced articles about journals published by Wiley-Blackwell. Maproom (talk) 19:51, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

dad served on both the From and Blyskawica.[edit]

My dad served in the Polish Navy in WW 2 and was on both destroyers the From and her sister ship. How do I get information on the crew that served? I have a picture at home and verified that there were 59 sailors lost in Norway when the From was sunk. I have a list of all names that were sailors who were lost however I am looking for more information on the ships and names of those that served. It is my understanding that he also served in the North Atlantic and is due a medal that he does not have from serving there. I hope you can help.

It is unlikely that Wikipedia will have any information on the crew. We have an article on ORP Błyskawica. Not sure about the From, did you mean ORP Grom? According to our article it was lost off Norway in 1940 with the loss of 59 lives, so it sounds like the same ship. For information on the crew you would be better off at a forum specialising in naval service such as World Naval Ships Forum. SpinningSpark 01:16, 16 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Van Cleef, chief scientist and partner of Van Cleef Bros.[edit]

Looking for information on Paul Van Cleef, inventor of rubber cement, the metal clamp of the end of the toothpaste tube, fireproof tape, duct tape, and a hundred or so other products. I remember seeing the page many years ago, but it vanished....

Is there any way to bring it back from your archives? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.76.28.134 (talk) 21:35, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Per the deleted page search provided at Special:Undelete, there has never been an article at Paul Van Cleef, Paul Cleef, Paul V. Cleef, or at any of a number of other combinations I tried. The only article at a title that looked at first like it might be a prospect was certain deleted revisions of Van Cleef, but that was about one Edwin Van Cleef. Can you pinpoint better what it might have been called?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:51, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I doubt it helps, but the Rubber cement article calls him "Paul Van Cleef". Maproom (talk) 06:03, 16 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Verbal autopsy[edit]

Verbal Autopsy (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I would like to add specific references to the text I have added on the origin of the term Verbal Autopsy and its use and utility in two major projects, but don't seem to be able to insert those references. Arnfried A. Kielmann Arnfried A. Kielmann (talk) 21:48, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You and 86.211.251.154 have both inserted a lot of errors into the article. I have reverted all that you have done, to get the article back into a readable state. I'm not referring to errors of fact, just to things like unpaired tags. Please take things more slowly, and use the "Show preview" button to check that your edits have had the effect that you intended before doing "Save page". Maproom (talk) 22:56, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved the article to Verbal autopsy as it is not a proper noun (and despite the misuse of the word "verbal", which includes both the written and spoken word).--ukexpat (talk) 14:29, 16 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.
