Tell the truth from the top down to the nation

This help desk is for assisting editors in improving Wikipedia articles — it is not a forum for discussion.

First off, I beleive all peoples male and female should have equal rights under the law. I have been married to the same women for over 30 yrs. I love and adore her with all my heart. Even during disagreements thru the years her opinion has always been very importmant to me. I understand just how smart this Lady is. We did not always agree, but we worked things out. We do not beleive in cutting each other down. My wife is much smarter than myself in education and bad as I hate to admitt it on life issues itself. But she also comes to me on issues she may not understand fully. Example farm equipment, auto,s things of that nature. We raised all three of our daughters to be a lady, but to never let a man mistreat or abuse them in any way. So to the head of NOW, how can you make a statement like the one you did today about birth control after the supreme court decision yesterday. The Hobby Lobby decision said that out of the 20 methods of birth control, only the 4 that is believed to kill the new life would not be covered. All the other 16 methods of birthcontrol have always been available to the female employees of said company. Please Stop telling lies on national t.v.. It only makes you look dishonest. The average American knows the truth about most things. You lady have a dishonest heart , Where was NOW when ED Shultz of msmbc called the talk radio host Engram a slut. Did not hear one NOW member say a word except I beleive the lady from San Diego branch NOW. Also believe she was put down by you wonderful equal rights Now members. Words have meaning and and dishonest words that you preach lady makes equal rights harder for there to be equal rights for all. Most people hate liers, along with that usually comes theives. Would love to hear back from you on this. I am a open minded man, show me where I am wrong. Lets stop deviding this country and working together for a change. As a viet nam vet what I see going on in this great nation breaks my heart. I can handle the truth no matter who,s at fault. But as a nation if all of us starting at home all the way to the White House do not start telling it as it really is, well the future does not look good for my grandchildren. This from a man who puts his wife first and always respects her wishes. After all this wonderfull lady gave birth to my children. No man is near as tuff as the female. Unable to search for page

Hi my article was just moved from template to page (EtonHouse International Education Group), but when I tried to search for the title, "EtonHouse International Education Group" on wiki, the search results did not show the page. What can I do to make the article show?

You do nothing at all. It takes a short while (anywhere for a few hours to a few days) for the search indexing to catch up with new articles. Just give it time. --Jayron32 03:10, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

However, the article needs much work (did it go through AFC?) - the tone is too promotional and it cites only 1 reference independent of the subject. In addition, EtonHouse Korea should be merged into this article.--ukexpat (talk) 14:26, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). No results on searches

Half of my searches lead to no results ('The page "xxxxxxx" does not exist. You can ask...'). I have looked at various help pages, but they seem to be biased towards getting one involved in the editing etc. of Wikipedia, not basic help in using it, The help pages about actually using it are written in computer code Geek, not plain English. For instance, in the last paragraph of the 'Talk:Grundfos' entry (beginning 'I have to disagree with Constantinobel...'), the author says 'They would do well to read the ITT Lowara Wiki entry which is more factual'. Put 'ITT Lowara' (a well known pump manufacturer)into the search box, and what do you get? The all too common 'The page "ITT Lowara" does not exist. You can ask...'. Why does the author refer to it if the page does not exist? I feel I must be doing something simple wrong. Why can I often not find what I am looking for? Why does a Google search for the SAME word(s) lead to multiple results when a Wkipedia search lead to no results? This should be explained in 'search help' in plain English. I can find no sign of an ITT Lowara Wiki entry. The post at Talk:Grundfos is from 2011. Maybe there was something at the time although I haven't found a deleted article either. I also find nothing about it by searching Wikipedia with Google: ITT Lowara site:wikipedia.org. Can you give an example where Google finds a Wikipedia article and Wikipedia's own search doesn't? Note that by default, Wikipedia's search only searches in articles and not talk pages, user pages and so on. Click "Everything" on the search results page to include all pages at en.wikipedia.org. There is a very simple reason that Google returns more results than a search on Wikipedia; the results on Wikipedia are limited to just the subjects we actually have articles on. Not every topic has an article, nor indeed is it supposed to. SpinningSpark 17:43, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Do you have a link saying "Add links" or "Edit links" at the bottom of the left pane of Țara Hațegului? You can click that and enter "ro" and "Țara Hațegului". Photo adding to article

File:Tv9KannadaLogo.jpg looks like a copyrighted logo which isn't allowed at Commons. You said it's your own work but that only applies if you made the actual logo and have the rights to it, and then we would need evidence of that. If you took a photo, scan or screen dump of a copyrighted image then it doesn't give you the right to distribute your copy of the image. Copyrighted logos can sometimes be uploaded to the English Wikipedia with a fair use claim. Placement in an infobox depends on how that infobox is coded. Which article do you want to use it in? Deleted Article

I am 'Special Projects Coordinator' of a small charity and have been asked to post information about our charity onto Wiki. I created a document in what I thought was the relevant editing section following the editing wizard. I included some information about how the charity begun and included information about some research work we have completed and are currently involved in. I did manage to edit this piece on and off over a few weeks and it was what I would term 'work in progress'. Following some weeks away from the work, I tried to reconnect with it, but was unable to do so. I believe it was deleted. I tried to enter the information in the 'deleted log' to trace it but I am unable to find it. It was titled The Cure Parkinson's Trust.

My questions are:

- Has the work been deleted please? - We are a small charity and I am attempting to get a relatively low-key presence on Wiki..... please direct me to the most user-friendly and appropriate help pages where someone like myself, who is not fully conversant with the myriad of pages/editing functions on Wiki can get straightforward guidance in creating a 'small' page.

Click "Contributions" at the top right of any page to see your edits. It doesn't show edits to deleted pages but I can see you don't have any so I guess you refer to User:BaileyBoo/sandbox or Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/The Cure Parkinson's Trust. An article about your organization should have references to satisfy Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). New users may find Wikipedia:Teahouse a friendlier place. Suspicious donation header

There's a suspicious looking donation header that refuses to go away when I hit X, and is asking for credit card info. It is not formatted like the rest of the page, and stays on top as I scroll. Is this on Wikipedia's end or mine, or is it legitimate? --Pichu0102 (talk) 13:28, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

There have been many donation banners and I don't work with them so it's hard to tell without more info. As far as I know, all donation banners have a link to somewhere at https://donate.wikimedia.org or possibly https://wikimediafoundation.org, and only ask for credit card info when you get there. If you are taken to another site then it sounds like a fake but it could be made in different ways, for example malware at your end, vandalism of a Wikipedia page, or it could be website spoofing. Make sure you are at wikipedia.org or another Wikimedia site. Please post a url where you see the banner, also if it appears to be on all Wikipedia pages. I got a donation banner today which actually leads to a page with a long query url at https://payments.wikimedia.org. It's legitimate, and unauthorized people cannot place content there, but it seems unfortunate that the main page https://payments.wikimedia.org is empty for people who try to check out the site asking for their credit card info. Retrieving content from my sandbox

Hi Have been practising creating a page in my sandbox - entered content, saved page, previewed, logged out. When I log back in to edit, I can no longer see my content and am struggling to find how to retrieve it. Any help greatly appreciated.Adproductionguy (talk) 13:50, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

@Adproductionguy: Special:Contributions/Adproductionguy shows no sandbox edits and you have no deleted edits. If you were logged in to this account then it seems the page was not saved. New users sometimes misunderstand the interface and think they have saved when they have only previewed, or need another step to save. If it doesn't show up when you click "Contributions" at the top right then either it wasn't saved here or the page has already been deleted. As mentioned, your account has no deleted edits currently. Copying text direct from website with permission

Deleted Wikipedia Page- request for source code for editing

Hi I edited the Wikipedia page for my company on June 30, 2014 (Phoenix Nuclear Labs) but it was deleted today. The Wikipedia text may look like advertising but I am still in the process of editing it. Could you please at least let me retrieve my source code to the text file? I won't be putting the deleted content up until I am done editing them.

The article, Phoenix Nuclear Labs was not deleted. Your contributions to it were reverted. If you click on the link to the article, then at the top of the page you will see a tab that says "View history". Click on that and you can see the history of the article. However, the article doesn't appear to provide indications that it passes general notability guidelines, so that it is likely to be nominated for deletion. Because an article can be nominated for deletion as soon as it is moved into article space, it is a good idea to keep a draft article in user space until you have put enough information in it so that it will survive a deletion discussion. I see that you didn't originate the article. It still looks as though the article may be nominated for deletion. I see that your edits were reverted as promotional. Please read the conflict of interest guidelines, which in particular apply if you are employed by the company (as you appear to indicate that you are). Consider creating an account. As Arjayay notes, this is the only edit made from this IP address, which is a dynamic IP address, so that you do not have a reliable contribution history. E,employment Scams

I was contacted for a data entry job by a company called Star Tel Data Incs their web domain is protected by a privacy company and all of their IP's point to other Proxy servers. I went through an on line interview using yahoo messenger. I cant find out anything on the net good or bad. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Is the article in question Brewster Hughes? Do you have a reliable secondary source with your date of birth? It may seem counter-intuitive, but Wikipedia requires reliable secondary sources. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:52, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

I was planning to delete the stated date of birth as questionable biographies of living persons material. The subject of the article is not living, but his children are living, so that BLP does apply. However, I don't see the names of his children in the article at all. Are you referring to the statement in the reference http://www.oxforddnb.com/templates/article.jsp?articleid=100490&back= by Val Wilmer? That website is not affiliated with Wikipedia and we have no control over their content. You will have to contact them and not us. They have a contact form at http://global.oup.com/oxforddnb/info/contact/. Your name and alleged birth year isn't mentioned at all in Wikipedia's own article Brewster Hughes. I removed the ref because it was malformed and was causing a flag to appear. As PrimeHunter says, Wikipedia's article Brewster Hughes doesn't mention the original poster at all. Reporting web pages which disseminate viruses

Dear editors: While searching for a reference for a rap musician article, I loaded a web page which my virus checker reported tried to install something nasty on my computer. It's likely important that Wikipedia articles don't link to such pages (so I didn't add it... ). Is there a spot to report things like this? Well, the project that Anne mentioned certainly isn't applicable. It is about biological viruses. Since this is a question (not a complaint), and since reporting the corrupt web site might help other editors, I would suggest that Anne might also post this at Village Pump (Technical). I infer that the web site that was corrupt or malicious is off-wiki. I don't think that Wikipedia is or maintains a list of corrupt or malicious web sites. You could reporting the web site to its Internet Service Provider. Robert McClenon (talk) 20:18, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks to all who replied. I saw the Spam blacklist, but didn't realize that it could be used for other things besides advertising. Robert McClenon has kindly offered to do the ISP notification; it doesn't appear that the web site was spreading malware deliberately, so maybe the ISP will remove the "infection" and no more action will be needed. —Anne Delong (talk) 14:13, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Adding web sites to the spam blacklist if they contain malware cannot do any harm and may help. However, as I understand, the spam blacklist prevents a web site from being inserted as a reference or external link to an article. If I understand correctly, Anne had encountered the web site off-wiki. She was doing a Google search for a rapper, and retrieved the site, but her virus checker and mine both warned that the web site was bad. This was an off-wiki search trying to locate content to add to the wiki. Logging the web site in the blacklist can't hurt, and will prevent the web site from being added to a reference, but the real protection from having one's PC corrupted before creating the article is one's virus checker. An editor who didn't have reasonable virus checking would have already had a virus (or other malware) loaded. Removing the malware from the web site is a responsibility of the ISP. What can be done is to do a WHOIS on the web site and notify the registrar and the name server. If anyone wants more information on this process, I have Reference Desk, Computing watchlisted. Yes, I was aware that it wasn't directly a Wikipedia problem, but since the web page contained information about a draft article, I thought it might be a good idea to prevent anyone from adding a link to it, as service to our fellow Wikipedia readers. For some reason web pages about musical topics and/or downloads seem to be frequent sources of infection; I have several musician friends who seem unable to resist clicking "okay" on nefarious pop-up windows and wouldn't think to keep their virus checkers' databases up to date. Frederick Russell Burnham

I found the article on Frederick Russell Burnham to be highly offensive and non factual.First of all it is claimed that Frederick Russell Burnham killed "Mlimo".This is utter nonsense since "Mlimo" is the native Zimbabwean name for God.The man killed was merely a Priest of the "Mlimo" cult.This article is based on the early writings of European settlers who were ignorant about African culture and religion.Secondly the description of the priest of Mlimo's priest as having a cruel crafty look is based on Western propaganda at the time to justify the brutal murder of Africans and the illegal usurpation of their land. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.246.55.148 (talk) 21:07, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Having read the article, I believe the points 77 makes are valid. That section of the article reads like an uncritical copy of colonialist propaganda written over 100 years ago. I hope 77 will take this up on the article's talk page. I would do so myself, but 77 clearly knows the subject better than I do. Maproom (talk) 23:06, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

I was bored,and I check "What links here" for Minecraft.I found Meincraft and Meinkraft.It looks like CSD R3.Both redirect was old.I requested speedy deletion. @Ssaz 12: Hey Ssaz 12. I might have declined even if the redirects had been recently created. Why do you think these aren't "common misspellings" or "generally useful ... misnomers"? They're not obviously not, and the CSD are usually for clear cut cases. I would expect people who speak German and related languages might very well guess "mein" as the spelling just hearing it if they didn't already know the game. Note that the article appears to be accessed through each of these redirects about 15-20 times per month using the Wikipedia article traffic statistics tool.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:36, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
