November 9[edit]

My edit looks sloppy![edit]

I just spent an hour and a half editing the Uri Milstein page, and somehow, half my edit got italicized and also runs way off the page! So my first question is ; how do I fix it? And the second is : how do I prevent it happening again? Thanks!Dale Stern (talk) 03:16, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looking into this.

@Dale Stern: You put a space at the beginning of each line. Whenever you put a space at the beginning of a line it formats it the way you saw where the lines extend off the side of the screen. But your edit is rather confusing. Are those words your thoughts or are they quotes of the subject, Uri Milstein? Dismas|(talk) 03:28, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I did a bit of cleanup and removed some byte order marks in the content. The BOMs are usually a result of copying from a right to left writing system such as Hebrew, and it makes it hard to edit. The article needs a lot of work. --  Gadget850 talk 05:46, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nitschke[edit]

Hey Jim,

I imagine it sux to be corporate. But, hey, were getting old.

My edits are verifiable. Your info is false.

Hello, no one named Jim has been involved in the Ray Nitschke article or posted on your talk page. In any case, this is the Help desk, where you can ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia. Whoever you're talking to, you need to do it on their talk page. Also, if you are related to Ray Nitschke as your username suggests (Ray had a son John, b. 1963), please refer to WP:COI for information about conflict of interest in Wikipedia articles. Good luck. ‑‑Mandruss  06:10, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jrnitschke 066 410: ping for good measure. ‑‑Mandruss  06:19, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have a theory Jrnitschke 066 410 is referring to Jimmy Wales.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:50, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sockpuppet investigation I filed[edit]

Dear Help Desk,

I just filed a sockpuppet investigation. I have reported an IP address and an account as they made similar, nearly the same type of vandalism. Am I doing anything wrong as I have read that Checkuser/investigators won't connect the IP address with the account?

Here is the investigation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Bamafan4lyfe

Thanks, pcfan500 (talk) 06:40, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm no expert on this, but I think to be considered a sock, one would have to be using their multiple identities to deceive or mislead for nefarious purposes. If their account had been blocked and they came back as an IP, they would be a sock. This just looks like a vandal who is careless about logging in. I've been known to edit without logging in (a few times, a long time ago) but it wasn't an attempt to deceive anyone. ‑‑Mandruss  06:50, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Mandruss pcfan500 (talk) 06:56, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But with the edits so close together, they may have hoped to deceive, but you saw right through them. In that case, they're a harmless sock. Maybe you could just put a polite nastygram on their talk page or something. "Be careful about editing without logging in. Since you also edit logged in some of the time, you might be suspected of being a sock puppet." ‑‑Mandruss  07:01, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Expert policy[edit]

Please tell me if this is not the correct place to ask about this. Is it appropriate to request a bot task to remove expert tags (Template:Expert-subject) lacking a reason or talk parameter (in this category list), or is this against WP policy or consensus? I know that the Template:Expert-subject/doc says that it's ok to remove such tags, but I want to be sure that it's ok, so I ask here. Iceblock (talk) 15:53, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Iceblock: you would probably want to open such a discussion on the template's page or at a village pump if you are suggesting a mass removal.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:01, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

there have been recent posts to my page, relating to a past issue that has been proven false

I have deleted these posts but the user has reposted them and linked them to a page that I am in the process of legal action

Can you please prevent unauthorised updates to my page

If so please let me know so I can lock my page

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Megamonsterboy (talkcontribs) 23:14, 9 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please see WP:BLP for the Wikipedia policy regarding articles about living persons. Relevant to this situation, negative information may not be suppressed if it is supported by reliable published sources. That appears to be the case, given the multiple sources, including this one and this one. If you can provide reliable published sources that contradict the allegations, that information can be included as well; however, you should not do that yourself per Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines. Instead, post a message on the article's talk page, providing links to the sources, and another editor will assess the situation and modify the article if deemed appropriate. You may also seek further guidance here at Help desk, but be aware that there is no such thing as "your page" or "unauthorised" updates to it. ‑‑Mandruss  00:09, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
While I was writing the above, another editor made changes contrary to my take on the situation (would be great if they could post here first). They consider the sources unreliable ones. I will defer to their judgment for now. ‑‑Mandruss  00:11, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
my google news search didnt get anything on the issue, and the link being used claimed that it was a Phoenix article but it was to someone's blog site . I have opened a discussion at Talk:Regina_Doherty#company_loan -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 00:17, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
