August 23[edit]

I'm lost around Wikipedia help pages[edit]

All I want to do is tak about the autoconfirmed group, because a certain thing is bugging me. Where do I exactly go to discuss? Rapidgame7 (talk) 02:59, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Rapidgame7: It depends what you want to discuss. What is it? PrimeHunter (talk) 03:38, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I actually wanted to discuss about the autoconfirmed usergroup, because it's "4 days 10 edits" thing seems to have a little exploit. I would write it here, but first I want to know if there's a place I can talk about that here. Rapidgame7 (talk) 07:41, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Rapidgame7: It still depends on what exactly you want to discuss. If you have found a way a user may avoid the autoconfirmation requirement for some actions then don't reveal it publically but see mw:Reporting security bugs. If you are just concerned that users may make 10 trivial edits to get autoconfirmed after 4 days without real work then it's well-known. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:46, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Well, I guess that my "exploit" can fall into the latter thing about trivial edits. Thanks for your help! Rapidgame7 (talk) 03:30, 24 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Usurpation of blocked accounts[edit]

Is it acceptable (and/or advisable) to WP:USURP an account that has been blocked for sockpuppetry and/or vandalism? Please explain clearly the reasoning and policy behind the answer given. Thanks, MopSeeker FoxThree! 03:14, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an expert here, but I would assume that if an account has been blocked then it has significant edits and therefore cannot be usurped. Why would anyone want to do this anyway? Dbfirs 06:45, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Mopseeker, The account you want to usurp should have no edits or significant log entries to qualify for usurpation— A blocked account will have made edits that justify the block, so not acceptable. Since many blocks are because the user name itself is also problematic, such as a company or product name, it would be additionally inadvisable. Same with blocks for sockpuppetry. I can't imagine the point of this anyway Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:52, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
CheckUsers may block accounts with no edits. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:35, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
... so there might be an account without edits, blocked on the basis of its IP address, and thus usurpable (why was this word not in any dictionary until today?) if there were a good reason to do so? I can't imagine what the reason would be. Dbfirs 15:18, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Where can I find a list of redirect pages for a specific article?[edit]

For any specific Wikipedia article page, where can I find a list of all the redirect pages that redirect to it? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 03:26, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Go to the article and click on "What links here" on the left side of the article. Dismas|(talk) 03:30, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. No. I already tried that. That lists everything (every article that links "here"). It often numbers in the hundreds, perhaps thousands. I want to know only "redirects" that link (i.e., re-direct) to the page in question. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 05:58, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To be more specific, near the top is a line that says "External tools: Show redirects only". Click on "Show redirects only". Dismas|(talk) 06:01, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Thanks. I did not see that "External tools: Show redirects only" section before. Thank you. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 06:40, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There is also "Hide links" which is part of MediaWiki so it's often faster and never goes down. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:32, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 16:54, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
When you have clicked on What links here under the tools menu, you will see a section titled "filters"; just below you will see three links "Hide transclusions | Hide links | Hide redirects" If you click on the first two (Hide transclusions and Hide links) you will be left with only redirects.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:04, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect. Thanks! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 03:19, 24 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, all. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:04, 24 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2015 Belgian Grand Prix[edit]

hi i need you you to update the result of 2015 Belgian Grand Prix race thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.2.247.6 (talk) 17:58, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The result looks fine to me - articles on recent sporting events have dozens of edits shortly afterwards - if you thing there is a problem please bring this up at Talk:2015 Belgian Grand Prix - Arjayay (talk) 18:06, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
2015 Belgian Grand Prix#Classification hasn't added the full race results yet. It only has qualifying so far (compare to 2015 Hungarian Grand Prix#Classification). You can currently see race positions in the "BEL" column at 2015 Formula One season#World Drivers' Championship standings, and full results at the official site [1]. Wikipedia is made by volunteers. You can do it yourself, but a table like that would be a hard start to Wikipedia editing and there may already be somebody working on it. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:24, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
2015 Belgian Grand Prix#Classification has now been updated. Major sports results are usually added faster in my experience but we are all volunteers and nobody is assigned to do specific work. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:32, 24 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I botched an attempt to add an incident[edit]

Dear Wikipedia help desk: Help contact suggested that I post this at the help desk. I just botched my attempt to add a Dec, 29, 2000 addition of an incident in which two younger hometown (Sumter, S. C., USA) men were the initial force...as in the recent marines on the European subway...in staving off the crash of an entire airliner.

I contribute text occasionally to Wikipedia & am an annual small financial contributor to this wonderful site. Here is the link to the MAIN topic Wikipedia page: List of (non-state) terrorist incidents - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

List of (non-state) terrorist incidents - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The following is a list of non-state terrorist incidents that have not been carried out by a state or its forces (see state terrorism and state-sponsored terrorism). Assassinations are listed at List of assassinated people. View on en.wikipedia.org Preview by Yahoo

As to the story of the two American heroes over Kenya, I have this link of a non professional web site: http://www.theeffectivetruth.info/testclb.html I offer this suggestion to list because I am a general pathologist and part time forensic pathologist since 1975.

There are many documenting articles about this Flight 2069 incident and a video or two by internet search of British Airlines Flight 2069 (this incident is a topic on Wikipedia, too) that took off from England Dec 28, 2000. [That page...for reasons completely unstated...says that the incident was by a mentally ill person. That is NOT how it was reported in 2000; and any such decision of mental case vs lone wolf non-state terror person ought to be referenced.]

I hope that you can add the incident. I meant well, and I consider this incident a worthy addition. However, I can't correct it! So Sorry, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Poptop43 (talkcontribs) 19:19, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I corrected your malformatted addition which corrupted the display of the table, but I see that the reference which you included is blank. You will need to fill in details of the reference immediately, as otherwise your addition will be reverted. David Biddulph (talk) 19:30, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia's article about this incident is British Airways Flight 2069. It cites twothree references for the claim that the hijacker was mentally ill. Maproom (talk) 19:31, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, Poptop43, thank you for contributing financially to Wikipedia: it is appreciated (I am a sponsor myself) but whether you are or not has no relevance whatever to any question about editing or content. --ColinFine (talk) 00:34, 24 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

User Name Change[edit]

Hi,

I was attempting to start a page for crime writer Anthony M. DeStefano. In error, I put his name as the user name, thinking that would be the title of the article. How can I change that username, as well as put the article title in the correct place. Thank you in advance for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anthonymdestefano (talkcontribs) 22:01, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Changing username. --David Biddulph (talk) 22:11, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Anthonymdestefano: I have added a box to User:Anthonymdestefano/sandbox which will make it easy to submit it for review. If it's accepted then the reviewer will move it to a suitable title. See Wikipedia:Notability (people) for the main requirement for biographies. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:32, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
