I'm sorry, this will need an expert! Looking at the page history, I found that those subheadings were added in 2013, but there has never been any text underneath them. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:53, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Request to lock edit[edit]

Hello,

I write articles on Wikipedia, my concern is regarding the pages 'Vishnu', 'Krishna' and 'Rama'. Like the other pages('Jesus' or even 'Buddha'), I request that these pages should also be locked. The three articles I named('Vishnu', 'Krishna' and 'Rama') need to have edit locks. These are the articles on the Supreme Hindu Dieties and 'Anyone can edit' should not be there. I request edit-locks on these pages so that they can be protected from unusual activists.

Thank You! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.167.107.191 (talk) 06:35, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pages are protected only if the are subject to excessive amounts of vandalism, or other disruptive activity. If there has been such activity, you should report it at WP:RVAN. The pages Jesus and Buddha are only modestly protected in any event, and confirmed users (a pretty low bar) can edit those. It's almost inconcievable that preemptive protection would be applied to a page. Rwessel (talk) 07:13, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
107.167.107.191, I see that you have never edited any of the articles you mention, at least while using that IP address. If you are making many contributions to Wikipedia, it would make things easier for everyone if you registered, and used, an account. Maproom (talk) 07:32, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
... and if they were even partially locked then you (as anon IP) wouldn't be able to edit them. Wikipedia is the encyclopaedia that anyone can edit. All pages are, in principle, open to improvement by any editor. You may contribute to articles, but, even if you are the first editor (216.250.162.253 or Clasqm in 2002) they are not "your" articles. If you see excessive repeated vandalism to a page, rather than just accidental errors or misconceptions which you are free to correct, then protection is available for a limited time. Too speedy a deletion?[edit]

I tagged Gypsy (disambiguation) for speedy deletion, so that Gypsy could be moved there and Gypsy then redirect to Romani people. Did that get done and then the page get recreated by a bot before I could do so? Clarityfiend (talk) 10:16, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Gypsy (disambiguation) is now a redirect to Gypsy. Here is the edit description of the bot edit that did it:

Add maps location[edit]

How to point to google maps location with thumbnail on wikipedia pages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SreerajMelath (talkcontribs) 12:19, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Google Maps are copyrighted, so we can't use images of them in Wikipedia articles. We can give coordinates in articles in such a way that clicking on them leads to a page on which one can select from a variety of maps, including Google Maps, that show the locations. Guessing that you may be referring specifically to the article Attenganam, I've done that there. If you want to include an infobox in the article that includes a location map, you can copy an {{Infobox settlement}} from another similar article (such as Kanhangad), replacing the information about that place with information about Attenganam. Just leave out any information in the infobox that you don't know or is not applicable. Deor (talk) 23:41, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am writing to your organization as reader of Wiki and came upon wiki information that I think is very false. Nancy Shaefer was a State senator who had honor and high credibility. She was a servant to people and always cared about what was best for others. Nancy Shaefer had a long loving marriage with her husband of 52 years of no previous abuse, neglect, or martial problems. Her husband had no psychological problems and they were both loving and dedicated people to themselves and to others. Nancy Shaefer exposed a high profile pedophile ring weeks before her death. Nancy Shaefer I believe was murdered and murdered violently. It is dishonoring to put on Wiki that her husband murdered her then turn the gun on himself, when it was a set up to look like that. Nancy Shafer was a martyr with her husband. I believe your organization should be careful that you are not falsely representing a women of honor and who is to be left in literature as a women who stood against oppression and injustice. Please reconsider what you write about this precious soul and her husband, and take personal accountability in really looking into what you are writing even though the investigation was not accurate. adding photo/creating new page[edit]

Hi,

One of my interns created a Wikipedia entry on me (Judith Boss). However, the intern did not add a photo of me. How do I add a photo? Can I do it myself? Do I have a username for Wikipedia and, if so, what is it?

Also, I have a new novel that was just published and would like to create a Wikipedia page for that novel. Can I do it myself or does someone else have to submit it?

Thank you,

Judith Boss — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.14.27.5 (talk) 20:09, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Judith. Are you Judith A. Boss? If so, I must tell you that that article is in serious need of work to be acceptable as a Wikipedia article: mostly because it lacks any inline references, so a reader has no reliable way of telling whether anything in it is accurate (or, for example, has been vandalised at some point). It also has far more external links than are allowed by our policy. Even though the text is not overly promotional, the links do make the article appear that way; and evaluative phrases such as "among the top sellers in their fields" should never appear in a Wikipedia article unless directly cited to an indepedent reliable source. Both you and your intern (is that Melissa89?) should read our policy on conflict of interest, and henceforward edit the article only in accordance with that. It is important to realise that you do not own the article, or have any control over its content.
In answer to your specific questions: you do not have a Wikipedia account until you create one: you are welcome to do so. You are very welcome to upload a photo of yourself to Wikimedia commons (so that any Wikimedia project may use it, for example other-language Wikipedias), as long as you (or whoever owns the copyright to the photo) are willing to release it under a licence such as CC-BY-SA (which will allow anybody to use it for any purpose, as long as they attribute the source). If you own the copyright yourself, please use the Upload wizard to upload it to Commons - that will take you through the appropriate copyright statement. If somebody else owns they copyright, you need to get them to go through the process in donating copyright materials before uploading. Once the photo is uploaded, you can reference it in the article by the "image=" argument in the Infobox. --ColinFine (talk) 21:57, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph of photograph[edit]

If I make a picture of a photo in a hall of fame. Am I allowed to use this on the page of the person in the picture? If yes how do I tag this? Thanks in advance VYGOcommons (talk) 20:55, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • If the original picture is still under copyright, which it most likely will be, your producing a derivative work subject to the original copyright, and may only use your picture of it under the Non Free Content Criteria. Monty845 21:04, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Creating Article From Existing Article in Another language[edit]

How does one create an article in the English version of Wikipedia which already exists in another language version? Can this be done automatically via a special translation function, or does one have to translate and create the article manually?

PT1021 (talk) 21:13, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You are very welcome to do so, provided the subject meets English Wikipedia's criteria for notability (its existence in another Wikipedia does not guarantee this, since each Wikipedia is a separate project, sometimes with different rules and policies). There is no automatic mechanism for translating (and you shouldn't try to do it with Google Translate or similar). Please see WP:Translation for more information. --ColinFine (talk) 22:03, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
