Help with Page creation

[edit]

Hi,

I am trying to create a Wikipedia page for New Heights Education Group, Ohio. I volunteer with them and would like to submit an article.

The current account I was using kept disapproving the article submitted. Now it says the page may have been deleted as it was not edited for 6 months.

Could you please help me with this?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by NewHeights1 (talkcontribs) 00:03, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@NewHeights1: given that in order to have a wikipedia article, the subject must meet some minimum requirements like having had significant coverage about the subject in reliably published sources that are independent from the subject and it doesnt appear that any news organization has written about the subject at all, it is unlikely that anyone can help "fix" that.
Also, please read our conflict of interest policies -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 02:41, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism found

Please delete item under Accomplishments - Father of the Year (2007) and Runner Up (2008)

2007 was the year this person committed a murder-suicide of his family.

Done I've removed 'Father of the Year' as clear vandalism - thank you for letting us know. You can also make an edit request on protected articles in the future samtar {t} 08:12, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for doing that, @Samtar:, but when you encounter vandalism it is advisable to look in the article history to see what other vandalism the editor has committed on the article, and revert the lot. I have now done so. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:39, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies David Biddulph, I quickly looked over this one (something I don't often do!) and missed that bit out. Thank you for catching it samtar {t} 13:48, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you are referring to your edit to E Clampus Vitus, the error message said "Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).", and the word "help" was in blue to indicate that it was a wikilink, in this case to Help:Cite errors/Cite error ref no input. I have reverted the edit for you. - David Biddulph (talk) 15:13, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reference number 175 is showing cite error. --Galaxy Kid (talk) 17:25, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed by using different ref names for different references.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 18:46, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

giant white space under Table of Contents on pages with infoboxes

[edit]

I'm suddenly seeing whitespace like this on every article with a TOC that ends before infobox. Happening on both Chrome/Firefox for Mac. —'''''YO 😜 18:21, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is being dealt with at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 141#TOC problem and at phab:T118475. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:27, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Note: yes, I'm seeing the same "effect" also with images, added in a section, that are longer than the section. Btw, this effect doesn't appear in other WP editions. My message is just to add a further detail and because I was going to ask the question. My thanks to Мандичка and John :) --Dэя-Бøяg 18:48, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have made a temporary fix to MediaWiki:Common.css until the underlying issue in phab:T118475 is fixed.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 20:55, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If you fixed something, it doesn't appear to be fixed at this moment in time in IE 11, even when I do an Alt-F5. It appears to work in Chrome 47. • SbmeirowTalk21:58, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My fix worked but was reverted because it apparently broke other things. I doubt it was worse than literally millions (according to a small Special:Random sample) of articles with a large gap before the first section heading. A modified fix has now been made.[3] PrimeHunter (talk) 22:15, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
phab:T118475 has now been fixed. This should be a permanent solution. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:40, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with infobox film

[edit]

I have inserted a TV-film infoboks in The March (1990 film) with some success. The annoying part is that the box seams to have pushed the first chapter down under the box, for no apparent reason. Infoboxes aren't known to cause such problems. Could someone take a look and fix it.--Ezzex (talk) 19:39, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just ignore it. It's a Wikipedia-wide problem discussed at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 141#Blank spaces left when second-level headings follow floating boxes. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:47, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Thanks for the info.--Ezzex (talk) 19:53, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Flying the American Flag

[edit]

We have been told that No other flag can fly with the American Flag on the same pole. Yet, we see many flags, i.e. POWS, Marine, Navy etc. on the same pole below the American flag. It has been suggested that we hang any other flag from a yard arm Please help 19:51, 12 November 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.4.165.170 (talk)

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. --S Philbrick(Talk) 20:03, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That said, the code of conduct for flying the flag can be found here. Dismas|(talk) 20:04, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error references duplicate key

[edit]

see Battle of Buna–Gona there is one cite error in this article. It has only just 'appeared'. Tried pasting the first over the second to make them identical but didn't work. Help! Cinderella157 (talk) 23:39, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Cinderella157: The error message comes from a check recently added to the MediaWiki software. It's supposed to report different definitions of the same ref name but in this case the article has two identical:
{{sfn|Blakeley|1956|p=67|ps=. Cited in Advance to Buna – Part 2 of The 32nd 'Red Arrow' Infantry Division in World War II.<ref name=32ndDiv/>}}
The use of {{sfn}} creates the ref name FOOTNOTEBlakeley195667. The nested reference <ref name=32ndDiv/> apparently causes an error not currently covered by the linked help page Help:Cite errors/Cite error references duplicate key (written by me). There has always been limitations on nested references. This looks like a new limitation. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:24, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have added it to the help page.[4] PrimeHunter (talk) 00:44, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@PrimeHunter, thanks for the reply. I had previously run HarvErrors.js without errors. The recently added error check has identified as an error something which was not in error? It worked quite well before. This would appear to be a problem with the new software? Cinderella157 (talk) 00:48, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have posted to the developer at User talk:Matma Rex#Nested references with identical definitions. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:36, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Cinderella157: The reply is at User talk:PrimeHunter#Re: Nested references with identical definitions. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:27, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@User:Matma Rex, thank you for your reply and suggestion; however, some of my frustration is that this nested citation was working perfectly well before the new software and was not an error when HarvErrors.js was run. My point is that this error would appear to be an artifact of the software! Nested references are quite appropriate and even necessary if compliance with policies of accuracy in citing and verifiability are to be followed. Cinderella157 (talk) 21:43, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@User:Matma Rex I have not been able to successfully apply your suggested fixes. Cinderella157 (talk) 22:58, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The code by Matma Rex was for a simplified example by me. It works fine when it's adapted to the real example.[5] PrimeHunter (talk) 23:33, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@PrimeHunter, thanks, I appreciate your efforts but did you look at the resultant citation? It looks like this:

101. ^Blakeley 1956, p. 67.
102. ^ab[101]. Cited in Advance to Buna – Part 2 of The 32nd 'Red Arrow' Infantry Division in World War II.[57]

This doesn't make a lot of sense compared with how it looks originally even if it does get rid of the reference error.

101. ^abBlakeley 1956, p. 67. Cited in Advance to Buna – Part 2 of The 32nd 'Red Arrow' Infantry Division in World War II.[57]

Regards Cinderella157 (talk) 00:59, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see you fixed the part I forgot.[6] PrimeHunter (talk) 01:12, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter, just noticed that you used {{sfn}} and not {{harvnb}} as suggested. Just tried it with {{harvnb}} and it looks like it should thanks. @User:Matma Rex, I am still a little concerned that this is an artifact of the new software that has created an 'apparent' problem and has made a reasonable task more problematic?
