Referencing errors on Politics of Somaliland[edit]

Reference help requested. help in fixing a broken reference name thank you very much. Thanks, Bysomalilander (talk) 00:33, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Bysomalilander: It says <ref name = PROGRAM /> without defining PROGRAM anywhere. The fix is to give your reference but I don't know what it is. Earlier it says <ref name = PROGR> ... </ref>. If this is supposed to be the same reference then use the same name. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:49, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter (talk) just fixed it with other source thanks.Bysomalilander (talk) 01:39, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Alfred David Coxall Awarded George Medal 1961, no mention of this award????[edit]

In 1861 Alfred David Coxall, a member of the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Engineers, climbed down a static line attached to the aircraft and a novice parachutist. The jumper was entangled in the static line and could not pull reserve. Cpl Coxsll went down the line to the hung up parachutist, the line broke where Coxall had started to cut it and both fell free. Coxall untangled him self from the other man and fell free with him for several hundred feet before it became safe for Coxall to pull the other other man's reserve open. Then when the other man's reserve was about to pop open Coxall fell free and pulled his own chute open and it fully opened, at approximately top of tree altitude, 100 feet above ground. (A fraction of a second parachute ride). Both men landed close together, Coxall restored circulation to the other jumper's arm and both suffered no injuries. Both fell an estimated 3000 feet in freefall. The inspecting Military Officers did not speak to the Pilot, Coxall or the hung up jumper during their investigation. They had only second hand information from the airport staff who had only hearsay information. information. Mr. Coxall is now 90 years old but alive and well. Many people have tried to obtain the George Cross for Coxall However, apparently once a decision is made it is not changed This can all be supported as true by contact this writer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.50.244.38 (talk) 02:44, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

First, did this actually happen in 1961? Second, does this have to do with a particular article? If so, please either edit the article, citing a reliable source, or request the edit on the article talk page. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:41, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There's no problem confirming Coxall was indeed awarded the George Medal,[1] but that award does not automatically qualify him for an article. According to WP:SOLDIER, you need to be awarded the "nation's second-highest award for valour ... multiple times". Clarityfiend (talk) 03:49, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Category question[edit]

Would it be appropriate to add a category (Category:Hypocorisms) to a redirect (Steve)? Clarityfiend (talk) 03:42, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WP:RCAT seems to discourage it. But I won't tell anyone if you do. Unrelatedly, I don't understand why Steve is a redirect, but Mike isn't. Wikipedia is confusing. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 07:25, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that link. WP:INCOMPATIBLE indicates it is acceptable in this case, but I might as well make Steve a list, just to Be Like Mike. Clarityfiend (talk) 23:07, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Purge[edit]

Is there something on wikipedia that purges a particular page after a set amount of time --Varun  05:42, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • You mean purging the server cache? The cache should update automatically, though you can purge it manually if necessary. If that didn't make any sense to you, ignore it. If you mean something like deleting pages automatically, no, that doesn't happen. Stale drafts might get nominated for speedy deletion under WP:G13, but that's not automated. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 07:42, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is also the WP:JOBQUEUE. -- zzuuzz (talk) 08:18, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Songs and singles[edit]

[Not entirely sure whether I should have come here or WP:RDE]

Can someone help explain the scope distinction between Category:2008 singles and Category:2008 songs? There's a great deal of overlap between the two categories' contents, and Single (music) seems to say that a single is a type of song. Nyttend (talk) 12:23, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Category:2008 singles starts with: "This category includes articles about songs issued as singles, (phonorecords and Compact Discs) which were released in the year 2008."
Single (music) says: "In most cases, a single is a song that is released separately from an album, although it usually also appears on an album."
Many (a large majority?) of songs are not released as singles but among songs notable enough to have an article, a large part may have such a release. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:36, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
But I mean: why can't Singles be a subcategory of Songs? Going by standard thesaurus terminology, I'd be inclined to do Singles BT Songs and Songs NT Singles, rather than listing each one as an RT for the other. Nyttend (talk) 12:42, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There is a large but not full overlap. Singles don't have to be released in the year the song was made. For example, 37 Stitches is in Category:2007 songs because the song is from 2007 and was first released as part of the 2007 album Full Circle (Drowning Pool album). It was later released as a single in 2008 so it's in Category:2008 singles. Another song from the album, Shame (Drowning Pool song), is in Category:2007 songs and Category:2009 singles. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:32, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification; that makes complete sense. I thought the non-overlap was the result of some editors not being aware of both categories, i.e. they put an article in one but not the other because they didn't know that most similar articles were in both. Nyttend (talk) 13:56, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That probably contributes to the non-overlap. I don't edit in the area and haven't sampled it. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:31, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Guru Nanak[edit]

Hi, The page titled Guru Nanak says that Nanak founded Sikhism - He did not. He was the first of ten living gurus noted as Sikh. There is a big distinction - the designation 'Sikh' being the achievement of an inner state of consciousness. Nanak preached the Oneness of God, Supremecy of Nam and absolute requirement of living Guru.

The later identification of groups, communities or religious organizations as sikh or sikhism come with affiliations to many differing beliefs, including the belief that the Adi Granth or Granth Sahib, a book, is now the guru.

I wrote you because the page is locked & not accessible for editing.

Subscription newspaper[edit]

I added a couple of sources from the New York Times' TimesMachine. I believe that these articles are available only to subscribers. How should I tag these references to indicate that they are behind a paywall? I know I read it somewhere, but I can't find it. Thanks, Leschnei (talk) 16:41, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think {{paywall}} —  crh 23  (Talk) 17:05, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's the one, thanks. Leschnei (talk) 17:10, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Leschnei: Just in case you are using cite templates: these templates now have 2 integrated "Subscription or registration required" parameters - see Template:cite news all the way down in the documentation (3.4.15). So you don't have to use "paywall" separately with cite templates (it's built in). GermanJoe (talk) 17:16, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, thanks Leschnei (talk) 17:40, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Blank WebCite page[edit]

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help. I tried to archive this article through WebCite, but the link it emailed to me appears to be blank. The long URL link is also blank. I have successfully archived stuff in the past so I'm wondering if I did something wrong here. This is Paul (talk) 21:37, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I was able to archive it through Wayback Machine, but I'm still curious as to what went wrong with WebCite. This is Paul (talk) 21:51, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
According to WebCite, they are having issues with the server, and it's been on a steady decline. They said they are working to fix it as fast as they can.—cyberpowerChat:Online 06:49, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
