URL issue[edit]

The Squirrels#References indicates a broken archive-url in the first reference. The URL is simply copy-pasted from the Internet Archive; if anyone knows what's wrong with it, please fix it. - Jmabel | Talk 01:28, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As it said in the help link from the error message, the problem was that the timestamp didn't have 14 digits. I've corrected it in this edit. --David Biddulph (talk) 01:47, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please provide information about Oregon Turquoise[edit]

Why? Why is this noteworthy, either from a mining or a gemological point of view? I'm seeking to clarify how you think we can help here. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:37, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And if noteworthy, where would we find this information? in which reliable sources has it been published? - Arjayay (talk) 07:31, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot publish my article[edit]

Can Guang, like the Roly-Poly toy (不倒翁) which keeps coming back to its centre of gravity in spite of external forces, ever find his core meaning, purpose and direction in life?

Who's the author?[edit]

For an online copy of a picture from a book of a painting from a private collection displayed in a museum, who would be the "author" (for copyright purposes)? --2606:A000:4C0C:E200:AC43:3B49:CF5E:E4EF (talk) 06:53, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This can depend on a number of factors - the date of release of the painting, the date of death of the painter, the date the photograph was taken, the details of any contract between the photographer and their employer, etc. There can be more than one person with copyright in an image or other work. Can you give a URL for the online copy? Maproom (talk) 07:38, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Online copy:[1] -- although my question is somewhat hypothetical; that image is from an 1827 painting by an artist dead for more than 100 years. However, I did come across another online copy of a very old painting that had something like "© Royal Trust, Foo Museum, from the Bar collection" under it. (I could probably find a link in browser history if interested). 2606:A000:4C0C:E200:AC43:3B49:CF5E:E4EF (talk) 08:11, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Need help for creating profiles of my clients with Wikipedia[edit]

Hello I Need help for creating profiles of my clients with Wikiped for seo and top 10 rank google search engine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chinchalkarpallavi (talkcontribs) 07:31, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Please read carefully the policy on paid-contribution disclosure, the guideline on conflict of interest, and the policy detailing encyclopedic content. When you've done that, if you're absolutely sure that those profiles would be fully compliant with those three rules, feel free to come back to the help page and ask specific questions. RivertorchFIREWATER 07:45, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Chinchalkarpallavi: Sorry, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not an advertising or social media service. (See WP:WWIN.) We do not keep profiles, we build articles instead. And those articles are not for any clients, they are about them. That means, we're not interested in what specific people, companies or societies think or say about themselves; we are interested in – and we base on – what other, independent and reliable sources, say about them. (See WP:SOURCE.) --CiaPan (talk) 10:52, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

AvaTrade Italian page deleted[edit]

Hi,

I have translated the EN page of AvaTrade - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AvaTrade To Italian and it was removed from Wikipedia IT.

I see that another broker has an Italian page - https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/IG_Italia So I don't understand why it says that the page is promotional since it is informational.

Can you please explain the problem to me and how to fix it?

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnbarzzz (talkcontribs) 09:40, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Johnbarzzz: You might be better off to ask this question at the Italian Wikipedia because English Wikipedia policies do not necessarily apply on other language sites. Triptothecottage (talk) 10:02, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know Italian but it:Aiuto:Voci cancellate is their version of our Wikipedia:Why was the page I created deleted? The content of deleted pages can only be seen by administrators at the Italian Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:18, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Johnbarzzz. I'm going to give you some information about English Wikipedia which may help you understand what's going on. I don't know 100% that this is true for Italian Wikipedia, but I would be very surprised indeed if it weren't. The information is that nobody - not a person, not an organisation, not a company - in the entire world has a Wikipedia article. Not even Jimmy Wales. Your rivals do not have articles in the Italian Wikipedia: Italian Wikipedia has articles about your rivals. These may or may not comply with the policies of the Italian Wikipedia: if they don't then somebody ought to fix them or delete them. But either way, this has no bearing whatsoever on whether a page about your company meets those criteria or not. But if you had any involvement at all in creating a page about your company, it is likely that your conflict of interest would have caused you to write it in such a way that it would breach some of those criteria. --ColinFine (talk) 23:11, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

suggestion re ordering within articles[edit]

I'm a long-standing editor and still find it confusing, where exactly to ask for help. I have an idea: if enough editors like it, perhaps it could be brought to the attention of the relevant coders. The situation as I understand it is that given lists display only in one way, and I think it would be great to have a toggle button allowing the display to alter its order. I think this would be particularly of use in biographies and related articles. For example, Colvin (surname) (and presumably all our other surname articles) lists people alphabetically by forename; I'd love to toggle to a list by date of birth. A toggle option would also be useful in the bibliography section. For example, the FA on Mary Wollstonecraft has an extensive bibliography, listed alphabetically by author; I would like the option of seeing the scholarship in chronological order. I hope that I've accurately conveyed what I'm imagining. My question is, what next? How do I make this happen? Carbon Caryatid (talk) 14:02, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You might consider posting something at the Village Pump, maybe WP:Village pump (technical). (I'm often unsure which section there is best for a given discussion, but one of the sections over there would be appropriate for the suggestion you're making.) RivertorchFIREWATER 14:11, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Actually Carbon Caryatid and Rivertorch we already have a solution for this - sortable tables. -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 15:40, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both. I've had a look at Help:Sorting and it does rely on tables, when all of the examples I'm thinking of are untabulated lists. I'll leave this a day or two, and see if any other tips come to light. But I know from reading so far that I'd need significant help to make my idea come to fruition, without messing up perfectly good articles. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 16:18, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Genevieve Angelson[edit]

Hi,

I'd like to add to Genevieve's page, I work at the company that manages her - Suskin Management and she has requested that we update it.

She would like her page to reflect some of her press? "One to watch" from variety -http://variety.com/gallery/10-tv-stars-to-watch/ and breakout star from Hollywood reporter - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/video/good-girls-revolt-star-genevieve-angelson-plays-first-best-last-worst-939800?

Also to add that she will be staring in Relatively Happy - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6477082/fullcredits/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2000:EF43:2800:B9F4:384B:30FA:3F14 (talk) 14:04, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You need to read the advice about conflict of interest and the rules about paid editing. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:19, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You can post suggestions for the article at Talk:Genevieve Angelson, but you definitely should read the pages David Biddulph linked just above. I also would note that it is contrary to policy to use Wikipedia for promotional purposes; content needs to be encyclopedic in nature. RivertorchFIREWATER 14:25, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Footnotes/References[edit]

Hey I am making my first Wikipedia draft page for my job. I now that you need to make a footnote before you make a reference, but for some reason my footnotes and reference sections do not look how they are supposed to. I do not think my links are are working and I have looked at the Reference page and Footnote page on Wikipedia, but I still do not understand. Please help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hostageus (talkcontribs) 14:13, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The page you ought to read is Help:Referencing for beginners. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:21, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Hostageus: Hi,I have tidied the refs and ext links. In addition to the page suggested by David, you should also read WP:COI and WP:PAID as you mention a connection with your occupation. Eagleash (talk) 14:29, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I made a mistake when writing this article. The title says Koguan law school, but it should be KoGuan Law School. Please can you change this so that the grammar is correct.

Improving articles[edit]

Hello! I am a relatively new editor and while looking through the "Help" section on the Community Portal, I saw this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Department_of_Management and wanted to help make it better. I started to work on it and came across some problems where I just didn't know how to use wikipedia's tools well enough to work effectively. There may be a better place to ask for help, (with the size of this website there probably is) I have already done the wikiadventure and that helped alot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kb10r (talkcontribs) 15:35, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello Kb10r, while you could see HELP:Cheatsheet for nice editing tips, if you have any specific question on editing, feel free to ask on this help desk itself. Lourdes 15:52, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Moving page[edit]

I was attempting to correct the letter casing of this page to Gwei Lun-mei, but I can't work out how as the following message keeps showing up:

You do not have permission to move this page, for the following reason: The page could not be moved: a page of that name already exists, or the name you have chosen is not valid. Please choose another name, or use Requested moves to ask an administrator to help you with the move. Do not manually move the article by copying and pasting it; the page history must be moved along with the article text.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Treysand (talkcontribs) 15:37, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Treysand, you received the message because the page Gwei Lun-mei already exists as a redirect to the main article. Any administrator seeing this message would probably assist you with this move in due course. Thanks. Lourdes 15:48, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done --NeilN talk to me 15:49, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And undone by David Biddulph. You'll have to discuss the move. --NeilN talk to me 15:51, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Both references which have an anglicised representation, and both external links, have the previous capitalisation, so you would need reliable sources for the change. See WP:COMMONNAME. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:00, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Treysand:, Wikipedia:Requested moves has some additional information about how to proceed, if you disagree with the revert and/or want to propose a potentially controversial move in general. GermanJoe (talk) 15:56, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks all. This is so much more complicated than one would think. People from Taiwan usually have the first letter in the second character of their names in lower case. Almost all of major local publications list her English name as Gwei Lun-mei - 1, 2, 3. So not exactly sure why this is a 'controversial move'...Treysand (talk) 16:23, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Michael J. Walker[edit]

I have found an entry referring to me, which contains some inaccurate information, in the Spanish version when I clicked on my name (as in subject/headline). I should like to enter an accurate entry in both English and Spanish versions of Wikipedia (I write in both languages). Please tell me how I can do so. Thank you. Michael J. Walker Michael J. Walker (talk) 16:29, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As far as the English Wikipedia is concerned, the advice is at WP:Autobiography#If Wikipedia already has an article about you. The Spanish Wikipedia advice on autobiography is at es:WP:Autobiografía. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:42, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome, Michael J. Walker. The gist of the above link is that in the English Wikipedia, you should refrain from performing the changes yourself, but instead make a request "change X to Y, add the following sentence: (blah blah)" accompanied by suitable references on the talk page. If you place the "template" (programming code) {{request edit}} at the top of your post on the talk page, you will get a much faster reply, too. I am not sure which of the Michael Walker you are, but assuming the article is Mickey Walker (footballer), the talk page is located at Talk:Mickey Walker (footballer). Register my Company[edit]

I have a question.

How can I list my company on Wikipedia?

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by ONDEVAN CAMPERVAN (talkcontribs) 17:13, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • ONDEVAN CAMPERVAN, welcome to Wikipedia. The quick answer to your question is, if your company is notable enough, then it would eventually have its page on Wikipedia. You should avoid editing or creating articles about your own company. Please read WP:COI for details on Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines. Thanks. Lourdes 17:57, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good article status for small towns[edit]

I'm trying for my fourth Good Article with Kingsley, Iowa. I was wondering where the best place is to ask for what an article about a small city would need for that status. Maybe just the Good Article talk page? SL93 (talk) 20:41, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
