File[edit]

I ran across a nomination for deletion of this image file, also here, that is used on DeRidder Commercial Historic District, but the page states "There are no pages that link to this file.". I added this file to DeRidder, Louisiana. I am sure this has something to do with when files were transferred to commons but really have no idea. Can someone let me know what is going on? Should unborn children be counted in death tolls?[edit]

Someone edited the page on Susan Atkins to include Sharon Tate's unborn baby in the death toll for the LaBianca murders. I get this is a bit of a controversial subject, but is there a consensus or a policy I could reference on whether or not fetuses should be counted in death tolls? Hello Mattster3517, I don't recall any policy or guidelines on this. While different states have differing views on this (for example, the Texas law), in my opinion the article should contain as the death count precisely what is reported by reliable sources. Adding or not adding based on one's own view would be original research. You can ask for comments on the article's talk page for reaching consensus views. Joseph.india, before you create an article, please check yourself do you have WP:COI with the organization or not. wikipedia is not a free webhost of self-promotion. Copyright question[edit]

The first reference in the article Fuzzy cognitive map is a PDF from the author's university website. (In fact, the author has all of his papers available in PDF-form on his website.) However, the paper is also published in a journal called Presence, and it's definitely not free access. I don't think that even the authors can distribute free copies of published papers - am I correct in this? Leschnei (talk) 14:25, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Leschnei. I'm afraid it's not clear to me what you are asking, or why. If you are asking for the purposes of Wikipedia, then I can't see what the problem is: this is a reference, not a copy. If you are asking for other purposes, then we cannot give legal advice. Sorry, I wasn't clear. The url link goes to a PDF copy of the published paper; a paper for which MIT Press holds the copyright. My question was specifically, should I remove the url link from the reference because it's offering free access to a product that is not free. Before the days of internet, authors were given a limited number of reprints when their paper was published; if the authors wanted more reprints, they had to buy them. I don't know how/if the internet has changed this. We don't provide free access to books that are under copyright; is this any different? Leschnei (talk) 18:54, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ColinFine, he ask whatever (possible) copyvio link should be removed or not from citation. Leschnei, i don't think Wikipedia:Help desk is a place to judge whatever the publisher owned the copyright or the author. Some academic book the author retained the copyright of the text, which the publisher owned the copyright of the formatting or "edited work" only. Matthew_hk t c 19:02, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Here is what I was getting at - from the MIT Press webpage: "MIT Press allows authors to share their work for noncommercial purposes via the following nonprofit websites: their institutional repository, their personal webpages hosted at the institution, their personal website...." Other publishers have a similar policy, so the PDF on the authors's website is fine. Maybe I'm the only one who was not clear on this but my publishing days were early-internet, so I wanted to make sure that I wasn't violating copyright. Based on your quote of the MIT policy, the author has permission to have the copy at the site we link to, so its presence there does not constitute a copyright violation. We are free to link to any web page that is not a copyright violation: a link is not itself a copy and therefore cannot violate a copyright. By Wikipedia policy, we choose to not link to a page that is itself a copyright violation even though such a link violates no law, but this policy is not violated by our link. -Arch dude (talk) 00:45, 4 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DaleLaceyNZ I am one of the more active agents monitoring inquiry sent to info EN. Very roughly, those queues were severely backlogged but we were largely caught up over the summer and fall. There is a recent new backlog for couple of reasons including the influx of queries related to the donation drive. I did a search for any queries in the last year from DaleLaceyNZ, And found none but that's probably because you wrote to that address using a different name. If you would like me to track down your query sent there I can, however, that address is primarily for readers who don't know how to use Wikimedia forums. My first talk page archiving experience[edit]

I just had my first experience archiving discussions that were no longer relevant on Talk:Electric_toothbrush. I followed the manual Help:Archiving_a_talk_page#Cut_and_paste_procedure.

I noticed some edit summaries when creating archives include a Wikilink to the new archive page like this one. I tried to do that by including the page name in the edit summary but it didn't make a wikilink. :( How do I include Wikilinks properly in edit summaries?

Do most folks use an automated archiving solution? Which do you use? I've tried Archy McArchface on the sandbox which does the trick. Ericandrewlewis (talk) 22:15, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Ericandrewlewis: All wikilinks, whether in edit summaries or wikitext, must be in double square brackets. [[Talk:Electric toothbrush/Archive 1]] produces Talk:Electric toothbrush/Archive 1.
