Net neutrality banner[edit]

Hi all,

Could we pleace put a net neutrality banner for all readers to see, similar to the fundraising banner?

FCC is considering a law to allow US Internet providers to censor bandwidth price and slow down certain websites you visit.
Please stop this by writing a letter to your representative today! (If you're outside of US, share with a friend.)

I am a foreigner; if you're able to word this more concisely, please do.

  • Jokes apart, welcome to Wikipedia. if the logo has been released as you mention, some or the other volunteer editor will get to uploading it in due course; there's no hurry in general. @Maproom: Philippine Hybrid Hokkien was copypasted from Draft:Philippine Hybrid Hokkien, which is only a minor fixable problem (same author, 1 edit). But the draft itself was apparently copied from Hokaglish and seems to duplicate most of its content without attribution (see also the recent revert in this article). The new copy should probably be speedy deleted or redirected, but I wasn't sure about the exact handling (WP:A10 gave me a minor headache and is as accessible as Linear A - but I digress). The template to use for "Archived from the original"?[edit]

Hi all,
I'm currently working the article Kjell Ernst Viktor Ander. The article on the Swedish language Wikipedia uses this reference from the Svensk uppslagsbok archived from that source by Wayback Machine.
Just as that one-line micro-stub article took me an hour to research and write with the Nationalencyklopedin reference, I genuinely have searched for the right template to use for the archived reference. And still can't find it.
Your help most appreciated!

sv.wiki used {{webbref}} which, here, is a redirect to {{cite web}}. Renaming the parameters:

Company Page[edit]

Hi there!

I have a client who would like to list their company on Wikipedia.

Are there any rules which I, as the copywriter, will have to follow? Can the article include references to their site or to third-party sites which mention the company in question?

  • First, paid editing is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia. Please carefully read through Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. Second, Wikipedia is not a means of promotion. Please read Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#ADVERTISING. Wikipedia is not a Dun & Bradstreet catalogue of companies. If a company is notable, then it is very likely we already have an article on that company. Of course, we might not; there are companies that are becoming notable all the time. Have a read through Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). If the company you are representing is truly notable per our standards, then sure we can have an article. However, you personally writing it is not a very good idea. Instead, I would put in a request to have an article written. You can do so by reading the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested articles, and ultimately you would list the request at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Business and economics/Companies. I would like to draw your attention to that page in particular to note that it says "All requests must contain RELIABLE, INDEPENDENT, THIRD PARTY SOURCES". This is exceedingly important. Press releases, the company website itself, their marketing, etc. are not reliable, independent sources. A good rough test; pump the company's name into news.google.com. If there are multiple news articles that do more than just mention the company in passing, it's probably notable enough for an article here.
  • I would like to commend you for coming here to ask this question. What we see the vast, vast majority of the time here is a company sends someone here who creates an article about the company and then tries to defend its existence, rather than seeking help before proceeding.     Meridith.farrugia, welcome to Wikipedia (WP). Please read very carefully the link to Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure above, it includes mandatory instructions for users in your case. The rest of the advice given above is good too, but that part is crucial.
To answer your question, if you decide to write the article yourself (in which case you should probably do it via the Article Wizard): you can include references to their site and to third-party sites, see here for how to do so. If you want the article to exist on the long term, you must include references to sources that (1) are reliable, (2) are independent of the subject, and (3) deal with the subject in detail, all three at once. One way to look at this, Meridith.farrugia, is that Wikipedia has little interest in what a company (or any other subject) says about itself, and no interest at all in how the company would like to be portrayed. Wikipedia is only interested in what people unconnected with the subject have published about it, favourable or unfavourable; and the content and organisation of any article is determined by a consensus of editors, according to the independent sources and Wikipedia's policies. --ColinFine (talk) 17:00, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Data-Computer or Phone[edit]

What's the difference. computer data is like how much memory a program takes up, right? phone data seems to be how much you can watch (highspeed) videos on your phone.

The data measurement is the same: megabytes or gigabytes, and both computer and phone have memory measured in these units. Internet speed is often measured in megabits per second (eight to ten times the megabytes per second rate) whether you are downloading the data over the copper wires of a landline, the fibre-optic filament of a fibre link, or the radio transmission of a phone mast. Phone companies often impose a limit to the amount of date that can be downloaded per month. If you need more detail, ask at the computer reference desk which is designed for this sort of question. Post 2 - Need to Provide Some Sources To Prove Notability As Suggested By An Admin From This Helpdesk[edit]

Now my concern is that it is scheduled for deletion in 2 days. I would like to provide the following information to keep the page alive and get it published:

Sorry for the delay. Some of the external links are old enough that exist only in paper form and are not online. However, there are parts to this biography that make statements about the books that are wrong.

Here are the statements that need to be corrected:

Ana Veciana-Suarez is a syndicated columnist FOR TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY and former journalist with the Miami Herald. Later on:Her books include: The Chin Kiss King (FSG, 1997). IT WAS TRANSLATED INTO SEVERAL LANGUAGES, INCLUDING SPANISH AS EL REY DE LOS BESOS BY EDITORIAL PLANETA, S.A. IN 1997. I would like the corrections to those parts made to the article. As I was suggested not to edit it myself, since I'm someone hired to resolve this matter, can you do that?

Hi, first of all, I would suggest you read Your First Article and Help available for editors with conflicts of interest. I will add some of the sources you have provided to the article, thus meaning the article can't be deleted for being unsourced - however, another editor has raised other concerns (WP:SPAM, WP:AUTO, WP:SPA, fails WP:JOURN) that mean it could be deleted, so it won't be "safe" unless it is improved. Thank you for your response, I will do that in future. Can you please guide me how to remove the 4 concerns that this editor has raised? Even though I have a conflict of interest and it is a biography that the person itself is involved in, it is yet authentic. The personality is notable as proved by the resources and there is no exaggeration or favorism in the writing. It is neutral and journalistic. I will appreciate your direction, thanks!

Our guideline on the notability of politicians says we will often include Major local political figures who have received significant press coverage. Mayor of Asheville is at best marginal by that standard, and making it an autobiography does not help. However, if there is enough independent significant coverage to meet the general notability guideline, then there could be notability and so a valid article, and after that inclusion in the alumni listing. Creating a page for an existing actor.[edit]

I was editing the page of a show on Amazon Prime and while adding the cast used a redirect on them all and one actor was not cited, but in looking through wikipedia I see that there are other titles with affiliation to this person. I have never made a page for a particular person. How do I start and do I have to contact the person through imdb or another source and gain permission and/or make them aware? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Studdfudd (talkcontribs)

You don't have to get their permission. Creating an article is one of the harder things to do here on Wikipedia for someone completely new to editing. I suggest using the Article Creation Wizard to get you started. Indeed, Studdfudd. The fact is that Wikipedia is not interested in what you know or think about a subject (or what I know or think about it!), in what random fans think (hence IMDB and blogs cannot be used as a reference), and not much in what the subject or their associates say about them. It is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject have published about the subject, in places with a reputation for fact checking and editorial control. And if there is little or not such material, then no article will be accepted about them (in this case we say they are not notable).
