Help with AfD procedures[edit]

Hello, my username is ChunyangD and I'm a fairly green editor. I came across a page that appears to be a book review and is not encyclopedic. It seems to warrant AfD to me, but I've never gone through the process before. Could someone provide advice? The article is The Working Poor: Invisible in America. ChunyangD (talk) 06:13, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It needs editing, not deletion. Reviews in the New York Times and San Francisco Chronicle (also Publishers Weekly and others[1]) satisfy WP:NBOOK point #1. When you find an article that really does need to be considered for deletion, then I strongly recommend you install Twinkle, which makes the process much, much, much easier. Clarityfiend (talk) 07:31, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wikilink: Twinkle. TigraanClick here to contact me 08:47, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@ChunyangD: I've overhauled the article so it is no longer a disgrace to Wikipedia. See what you think. Clarityfiend (talk) 10:08, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you - it looks much better now! Will continue to keep this in mind for future edits. ChunyangD (talk) 18:47, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Old talk page still attached to new article[edit]

Hi,

This article was recently created: Syrian Liberation Front. If I click on the talk page link in that article, it takes me to Talk:Syrian Islamic Liberation Front instead of Talk:Syrian Liberation Front. How does this get fixed so the new article has its own talk page?

Thanks, David O. Johnson (talk) 06:42, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

David O. Johnson the problem was that Talk: Syrian Liberation Front was redirecting to Talk: Syrian Islamic Liberation Front. I've removed the redirect, so should be fine now. Joseph2302 (talk) 07:29, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Commons photos[edit]

Hello,

I uploaded pictures to Commons for the first time [2] and under "Metadata" is says: Date and time of data generation: 23:54, 31 March 2004, however they are of the Stanley Cup Finals 2009 (for example:[3]). I have photos of the Penguins winning the cup that game and Crosby is pictured so it can't be 2004, so I am sure it is the 2009 Finals. Is this an error on my part or the Commons? HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 08:40, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Most likely on your part. I would bet your camera wasn't set to date when you took the photos, and it recorded incorrect metadata. Maybe someone else can say how to correct that? TigraanClick here to contact me 08:49, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think you're right. I just uploaded another photo from a different camera/phone and the date was correct. Does this need to get fixed or is it still useable despite the date difference? HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 09:00, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I expect many photos get uploaded from cameras with mis-set clocks. But this question would be best asked at the Commons Help Desk. Maproom (talk) 09:20, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There's a warning in the Metadata section to the effect that the date/time might not be correct and it depends upon the settings within the camera. Eagleash (talk) 09:32, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, I must be blind to have missed that. Thanks a lot! HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 09:39, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Setting the date and time for the camera model in the metadata. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:33, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • If the error bothers you, you can fix it, maybe. The file is a JPEG and it contains metadata in EXIF format. There are editors available to allow you to modify the data (which is one reason that you cannot trust the data in the first place!) For example, the latest GIMP has native EXIF editing, and earlier GIMPs have plugins. Depending on your OS, there are also simpler tools: google "EXIF editor". -Arch dude (talk) 20:25, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • You can and definitely should fix the date displayed at commons:File:Pittsburgh players 2009 Stanley Cup Finals.jpg#Summary. It was automatically copied from the metadata at upload time but you are free to change it with a normal edit of the file page. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:13, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

User page has been deleted[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Mohanavalli

This is the user page I was using until before a hour.

Now I see the message saying "This page has been deleted. The deletion, protection, and move log for the page are provided below for reference."

I am not seeing any the deletion logs as well. I yesterday uploaded a picture, and then someone asked to add proper license, I have sent a mail to the author of the picture and waiting for the reply to forward to admin. But the user page got deleted. Someone please help me out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mohanavalli (talkcontribs) 09:27, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The page you are looking for is [4] (on Commons, not on English Wikipedia). Rmhermen (talk) 09:44, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks lot for you help. Page submission[edit]

Hi,

I would like to submit the following page: Draft:Niko Klansek or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:LkHk/sandbox.

The content in both pages is the same. Please, let me know if I have to do any corrections regarding references or template.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by LkHk (talkcontribs) 09:53, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@LkHk: Hello, I have left a welcome message and also some useful links at your talk page. I have also tidied up the draft a bit. (Punctuation goes before refs etc.) The image seems to have been copied from Klansek's social media pages and there is probably a copyright issue unless you have obtained the necessary permission from the copyright holder. Links to social media have been deleted per WP:ELNO. If you feel the draft is ready for mainspace, you can place {{subst:submit}} at the top of the page which will submit it for review. You should probably request deletion of the sandbox page by placing {{Db-G7}} at the top of the page. Thank you. Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). How to create general links[edit]

If I wanted "religiou sister" to direct to "nun#Distinction between a nun and a religious sister", rather than to the top of this long article on all sorts of nuns, how could I make it so that this would happen? Jzsj (talk) 14:00, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You'd use the pipe character, so [[nun#Distinction between a nun and a religious sister|religious sister]] renders as religious sister. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:07, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Virat Kohli[edit]

please correct the date of Virat Kohli' last T20 match. It is written as 18 Oct 2018. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.224.158.39 (talk) 15:16, 19 February 2018‎ (UTC)[reply]

Convenience link. As for what the date should be, I have no idea. I would have fixed it if OP had given us a source... †dismas†|(talk) 15:21, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

how do I get to the simplified/traditional chinese Wikipedia (I mean the link, nothing is censored here)[edit]

Hi,

So I see that on the left-hand side the interwiki links (on any article, pick whatever article you want as long as it's not terribly obscure) go to pages like this one https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:首页

For example if I search for cat it goes to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat and then if I mouse over the chinese-looking links on the left I eventually see "Chinese" in the mouseover description, and that one links here https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/猫

How do I choose the Simplified versus Traditional wikies? Which one is linked normally? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:AB88:2481:FC80:74F7:8967:473C:1EE6 (talk) 15:41, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

When I got to Cat, I see Classical Chinese just below Walon and above West Valm in the list, abd I see Wu Chinese just below Wolof. -Arch dude (talk) 17:40, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
See Chinese Wikipedia#Automatic_conversion_between_traditional_and_simplified_Chinese_characters. There is a single Standard Chinese version of Wikipedia, which automatically displays traditional or simplified characters depending upon your preference settings. Its article on cats is listed second to last on the Cat article. There are also separate Wikipedias for some Chinese varieties that differ significantly from Standard Chinese, including Wu, Classical and Cantonese. TSP (talk) 18:12, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Arch dude. Ideally every language version of every page would be linked to in the sidebar as you describe (assuming I'm understanding your question correctly). These are linked together via our sister project Wikidata. To change the entries and add a link to a language project that is missing, you need only to click on the "edit links" button below the listed language versions. Often, if there is a link missing, it means that there has not yet been an article created in that particular language yet, and if you speak that language competently, you are welcome to add it and then add the link to it. GMGtalk 18:09, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • (I'm not the OP) Thanks for the information. To summarize for the OP:
    • There are several chinese Wikipedias, one great big one and and bunch of smaller ones. See Chinese Wikipedia.
    • The interwiki links in the left sidebar provide one link to each Wikipedia that has a corresponding article, as listed in the Wikidata item for the subject.
    • The big Chinese Wikipedia allows a user a preference for the orthography used to display an article, and another preference for some minor vocabulary variants, but it's still only one Wikipedia, so it has only one entry in the sidebar.
    • If you are logged into Wikipedia when you hit that link, the Chinese Wikipedia will serve the page based on your preferences.
    • If you are not logged in, the Chinese Wikipedia may make a guess on your preferences based on your location(?)
Formatting too strong. GMGtalk 20:37, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Got it. So without logging in I cannot see the simplified character version, since I'm being served the traditional character version? (Based on a guess by their servers). I don't really want to make an account. 2A02:AB88:2481:FC80:74F7:8967:473C:1EE6 (talk) 07:09, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should ask at the help desk of the Chinese Wikipedia, the link to which is on the left sidebar of this page. -Arch dude (talk) 07:33, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I asked it there (in English). 2A02:AB88:2481:FC80:74F7:8967:473C:1EE6 (talk) 10:58, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The Chinese Wikipedia has a tab to select the writing system. I don't know how long the choice is remembered or what is required to remember it. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:33, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've answered the OP at Chinese Wikipedia, but I will post my answer here too. In Chinese Wikipedia, you should be able to switch to different text encoding/writing system even when logged out (I've just tried it). Hover to the tab located at the right side of 讨论 (talk) on the top left hand corner of every page, and a dropdown menu should appear (allows you to choose from five different options). Alex Shih (talk) 11:46, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, I replied to you on the Chinese help desk. (I asked for a translation of those options.) Thanks for the help. 2A02:AB88:2481:FC80:74F7:8967:473C:1EE6 (talk) 12:11, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think I made a mess[edit]

I think I made a mess by accidentally hitting a wrong key. I was trying to post a proposal for summary deletion of the new article Mutual energy principle. Please would someone with suitable Wiki editing skills fix it.Chjoaygame (talk) 17:59, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've properly formatted the deletion discussion page. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 18:04, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a service that allows non-university affiliated people access to academic journals and an interlibrary loan?[edit]

Wondering if something like this has been created for which, you could pay a monthly fee or something similar and get access? I figured if anyone would know if something like this, it would be other Wikipedians. :) - Scarpy (talk) 18:08, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Scarpy. It doesn't really help with interlibrary loans, but if you apply at the Wikipedia Library you can request access to a number of publications that are not normally available to someone without access to a university library system. GMGtalk 18:15, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
User:GreenMeansGo Gotcha. Are you aware of anything along the lines of subscription libraries or private libraries that would facilitate and interlibrary loan service? - Scarpy (talk) 22:24, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No Scarpy, other than going to an actual library, I'm afraid that's all I know to recommend. GMGtalk 22:30, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Second Amendment[edit]

Why does the definition of this amendment not refer to the first words contained in the paragraph, that is, “a well regulated militia”? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.109.23.145 (talk) 18:35, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to read the text of the amendment, you'll find it at Second Amendment to the United States Constitution#Text. Perhaps you didn't read that far? --David Biddulph (talk) 19:03, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Interpretation of that particular phrase is covered at Second Amendment to the United States Constitution#Meaning of "well regulated militia". -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 07:27, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

where/how to request changes to particular article[edit]

What's the proper way to submit a suggestion for improvement (or request additional info be added) for a particular wikipedia article/page? Can anyone make a suggestion or does it require a wikipedia account? — Preceding unsigned comment added by CookiePJones (talkcontribs) 20:24, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You can use the article's talk page. Ruslik_Zero 20:31, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hey CookiePJones. Wikipedia encourages users to boldly make changes to improve the encylopedia and the vast majority of articles can be edited by anyone, including those who do not have a registered account. If these bold changes are reverted by someone else, it is expected that the users will discuss the changes on the article's talk page and reach a consensus regarding article content.
In case you have come across one of the few articles that are protected so that only more experienced editors can change them, or if you aren't comfortable technically with making the change yourself, you can request someone review your suggestion by posting it on the article's talk page, along with sources to support your suggestion, and include {{Help me}}, which will add it to a list of requests to be reviewed by experienced volunteers. GMGtalk 20:32, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pending Changes Protection[edit]

Hello, my father has been receiving a lot of vandalism from anonymous users on his Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julio_Herrera_Velutini. There has been harassment, insults, and completely blanking the page. Please help me create a Pending Changes Protection so this does not happen anymore! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Banvelca1890 (talkcontribs) 21:02, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Banvelca1890: Hello, you can make a request for protection at WP:RFPP. Eagleash (talk) 21:07, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Though I dunno if it'll work, as it's getting just like an act of vandalism every two weeks, with even less during last summer and autumn. That's actually really light vandalism. Ian.thomson (talk) 21:11, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, it's persistent but sporadic. Eagleash (talk) 21:14, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
