[edit]Geography
[edit]I was reading the article regarding David Jackson stating he was born in Liverpool Lancshire. Liverpool is not in Lancshire. Liverpool is in Merseyside. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.0.88.23 (talk) 11:27, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- Only since 1974. When David Jackson (British actor) was born it was in Lancashire. Dorsetonian (talk) 11:35, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
Hanns Fischer - Physicist and Professor
[edit]Dear volunteer,
you are right that my submission is to some extent a copy of the emeriti homepage of the university of Zurich.
Facts are: 1) I am also the author of the Hanns Fischer article on the emeriti homepage. 2) The University of Zurich does not claim a copyright. 3) I have submitted a revised version of the Hanns Fischer article on Febr. 9, 2018, to Wikipedia which then was considered a viable draft and moved to the "location for AFC drafts" (s. revision history). Then I lost track of it. 4) In the revised version I also included the copyrights received for partly reproduced sections for the scientific literature (s References).
Given this situation, what do I have to do exactly, to satisfy the copyright rules of Wikipedia?
Thanks for you help and regards Tony Kaiser — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tony Kaiser (talk • contribs) 12:26, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- Note: Refers to Draft:Hanns Fischer. Eagleash (talk) 12:39, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Tony Kaiser: At the bottom of [1], there is
(c) Universität Zürich
, but even if there weren't, by default websites are copyrighted. I see no indication (in the "about" pages or wherever else) that this part of the UZH website is available under a Wikipedia-compatible license. So your point #2 looks outright wrong to me. If you can convince the UZH to release the content of that page under a free license (and while you're at it, ask for other pages, so that we can use them), please do, but otherwise you will need to paraphrase. That you were the original author is most likely irrelevant; you very likely gave up the copyright to the page you wrote to UZH.
- This being said, the draft review also indicated that an article
[must be] written in an acceptable tone
, meaning from a neutral point of view. For instance, sentences such ashe was a pioneer in...
orWith dedication and many personal hours in the laboratory...
are puffery (see that latest link for the "Bob Dylan" example) and do not belong in Wikipedia. TigraanClick here to contact me 13:40, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
Using a Picture from Wikipedia without Copyright Infringment
[edit]Hi all,
I found a picture the other day on Wikipedia and I would like to use set picture for non-commercial use. How can I go on by using this picture without violating copyright laws?
Thank you!
Sincerely yours,
Mauricio — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.241.64.18 (talk) 12:33, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- It depends on what license the image is using. It is more than likely licensed under Creative Commons, GFDL, or public domain unless it is being used at Wikipedia under fair use. What image are you wanting to use? PCHS-NJROTC (Messages)Have a blessed day. 12:36, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
How to respond to an obscene smear against a subject on a BLP talk page
[edit]In response to this edit by , I had written this
- I would say any claims about the content of that statement would need to be carefully considered, RELIABLY SOURCED and appropriately communicated. I am outright rejecting your statement because of the nature of it and the lack of any independent information supporting it. I find it quite galling that you think you know the trade secrets of a rival commercial entity and feel you can come here and smear his name in this manner.
but unsure if this approach is the right one so didn't post it. Also unsure if their comments should be completely struck from the record?? Rayman60 (talk) 13:09, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hey Rayman60. I just outright removed it. It's nothing aimed at improving the article, just personal opinion of the rather gossip variety (or whatever passes for that in the perfuming world). Given Draft:Arcadi Boix Camps, perhaps a touch of personal rivalry. At any rate, that article for Dove is in just terrible shape, and really needs some attention from someone who knows anything about the topic area. GMGtalk 13:19, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. I wasn't sure if it was one of those straight forward reverts or the more serious ones where you can't see the diff because of the nature of the content removed. Is it a case of don't acknowledge/ignore the poster and not post a warning on their talk page? As for the article, I have attempted to tidy it up from an outsider's perspective. We have seen some COI behaviour after my initial attempt at copyediting and de-promotionalising, but I reverted and warned off. I continue to watch the article so can jump in on obvious issues but an overhaul would also be welcome. Rayman60 (talk) 13:27, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- I have posted a suitable warning on the talk page of the editor who posted the comment referred to above. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 22:05, 30 March 2018 (UTC)

[edit]Issa Mussa is a sub-clan Isaaq Somalia and Somaliland — Preceding unsigned comment added by Issa Musa (talk • contribs) 15:54, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Issa Musa: The problem seems to be that you have entered a ref name (Cruttenden 72) but not tied that to any source. You should be typing
<ref name= Cuttenden 72>{{ref content}}</ref>
. As the page has only one reference, a ref name is not necessary in any case. Please see WP:REFB for a guide to adding references. Please do not remove maintenance templates from the page again, as this could lead to the loss of editing privileges. Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~

How to address a long overdue dispute that I did not initiate?
[edit]Trying to remove from the article Apache OpenOffice a commentary, as far as I know, not neutral, I have found myself in a previous dispute that I did not initiate. Several users have reversed my edits. Like added problem, I'm not a native English speaker. What can I do about it? --Entalpia2 (talk) 23:33, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Entalpia2: There appears to be an ongoing discussion about this on the talk page. Work with the other editors to try and get consensus about what the wording of the article should be. Do not engage in an edit war. If you are not comfortable with your level of English skills, then you can leave it to other editors to discuss. Also, please don't raise the same question in more than one help desk. RudolfRed (talk) 23:45, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
