What is the bar for "own work"?[edit]

I came across recently-uploaded media and was surprised that the author of the piece would be alive to upload it as their own work. On closer look it seems that a title was added at an angle relative to the photo—and I'm not sure what other elements—to make this a cover of a book. I'm too new to Wikipedia to say whether this should stay or go. Does it count as an author's own work? Would it not be better to use the original photograph in this case?

I'm also wondering how I would bring this to someone's attention who knows more than I do about the workings of Wikipedia. Would posing this question on the talk page for the photo be the right course of action? Dilligentlizard (talk) 00:02, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch, but unfortunately you're asking in the wrong place. This is a Wikimedia Commons matter; Wikimedia Commons isn't Wikipedia; and I imagine that the place to ask about it is Commons:Village_pump/Copyright. My $0.02: the first question is whether the original photograph (a British newspaper cover from 1905) is copyrighted. If it lapsed into public domain, no additional copyright applies: taking a photograph of the original (at a bad angle, BTW) and slapping some text indication over it passes neither the US threshold of originality, nor the UK's sweat of the brow doctrines. Compromised accounts missing information[edit]

Hello. I originally asked this on Jimbo's talk page, but was directed here. On the Wikipedia:Compromised accounts page, there is a sentence saying "In late 2016 this became a particular concern, with many accounts being compromised by a hacker group." However, I haven't found any information anywhere elaborating on this incident. Where is more info on this, and can this be explained or linked to on that page? Thank you. API Information[edit]

I want to use about city information provided by Wikipedia. Like overview,image,maps, Area section, population information etc. I try to find out Wikipedia API that provide all information related to city in JSON format but I can’t find such type of API. Could you please suggest me that how can I use Wikipedia information in my web site. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a database. Wikidata sounds more suited for you. Click "Wikidata item" under "Tools" in the left pane of an article to see the Wikidata information about the article subject, e.g. London (Q84). Many Wikipedia articles pull some of their data from Wikidata. Wikidata does not pull data from Wikipedia but bots often copy information from Wikipedia to Wikidata. Many things are only at one of the sites and the common things are not always identical. I haven't tried the Wikidata API but see mw:Wikibase/API. Question about Huggle[edit]

By the way, a clearer way to wikilink to an article in another Wikipedia is this: [[:el:Οικογένεια Πατέρα]] displays as el:Οικογένεια Πατέρα. Help with an article that was recently flagged and moved to draft.[edit]

This page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Joey_Attawia was moved to Draft status and I am unsure why. The person is a coworker and is an active television and film producer. It appears his picture was removed for copywrite violation and then the entire article was placed into draft mode. @Paulferlita: It seems the page was moved to draft by Doc James as it appears to have been created in return for payment. The summary left by 'Doc' was "Paid articles need to go through AfC" which is the Wikipedia review process. The creator of the page (Fenopy) would need to include it in the process by adding {{subst:submit}} to the top of the page. It has also been requested that they read WP:PAID and make any disclosures necessary but it is not clear if this has been complied with. Further, any persons with a connection to the subject have what is known as a conflict of interest and should read that page and only make edit requests via the article talk page. Question about Category:Toxins[edit]

Hello. I just posted in the Talk page of Category talk:Toxins, and while doing so, saw this: "Talk pages in this namespace are generally not watched by many users. Please consider visiting the Help desk for a more prompt response or reviewing the Categorization FAQ for quick tips." As such, I'm also bringing the question here. I believe the category page may be incorrectly placed under Category:Toxicants, but we could use a subject matter expert to finalize that assessment. The Toxicant article says that Toxicants are any toxic substance and adds "The term covers substances that may be man-made, biologically produced, or naturally occurring" - X201 (talk) 15:42, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As it turns out, the source used to substantiate that claim doesn't actually substantiate it. It only says "Whether a chemical is synthetic or "natural" has no bearing on its toxicity." It doesn't explicitly say that a toxicant can be man made and/or naturally occurring. I'll take that up on the Toxicant page. I DID find a source that claims all toxins are toxicants, but, as I pointed out on the Toxicant talk page, this and this source treat them separately. Is it okay to leave in a self-link if the link covers something that lacks an article?[edit]

The page for dry cleaning has the following sentence:

"The potential for petroleum-based solvents was recognized by French dye-works operator Jean Baptiste Jolly…"

The link for "Jean Baptiste Jolly" links back to "dry cleaning" (no particular section). Should the link be removed?--75.110.35.108 (talk) 18:10, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Potentially Dangerous Spam from User Thepharma[edit]

User Thepharma keeps adding spam here that Firefox IDs as "Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead ... Firefox detected a potential security threat and did not continue to www.canadadrugs247.com. Gabrielchabojr. If you want to write an article in Swedish, please go to the Swedish Wikipedia. I don't know what the relevant policies are on sv-wiki, but on en-wiki, writing about yourself is strongly discouraged, and articles must be mostly based on what people unconnected with the subject have chosen to publish about the subject. They're not broken - they're supposed to link to the relevant chart (Adult Contemporary, Mainstream Rock Songs, etc) and then you can scroll down that page and see the peak positions for every song on that chart. Linking to a specific song would be a nightmare... there are over 120,000 song articles on Wikipedia, and it would mean going through every single one, and searching for and adding the unique ID number for each song. It's just too time-consuming for anyone to do, when the current template already shows the required information. Richard3120 (talk) 19:35, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
