Help with uploading a history website to Wikipedia - good idea? how to do it automatically?[edit]

Hi,

I am working with an organisation who have amassed a lot of local history information on a website hosted by them (they are a charity), the purpose of this is to make historical information available to a wider audience. In many ways this seems to be a natural fit with Wikipedia and perhaps a way to move away from the technical support problem that we currently face, to one of providing, maintaining and editing content - which is really where we can add value.

Our site is contained mainly in these pages: http://history.nlcaonline.org.uk/category/street

I wonder if there is an opinion on how suitable this would be as Wikipedia content, and then the best way to "automatically" upload this to the site ready for editing?

Any thoughts would be very welcome

It would be a WP:copyright violation to copy to Wikipedia (even to a draft or sandbox) any material which has been previously published elsewhere. You would need to rewrite it in your own words before putting it on Wikipedia. "This website is by and for the residents of North Laine. The North Laine Community Association received funding from Awards for All in 2008 to build a website that enables residents to talk, write to, and support each other." [1] From the WP-standpoint, this looks WP:USERGENERATED and not something we can use as a WP:RELIABLE SOURCE. It's possible that something from it could be reasonable as a WP:EXTERNAL LINK, but that would be on a case-by-case basis and should not be added by people involved with the website. Hello, Gareth. Apart from the copyright question, it would almost certainly be wholly unsuitable. If it is entirely a summary of reliable published sources, then it might be suitable, if you could resolve the copyright question. Separating comma in London[edit]

For the GVA per capita, the converted US dollar value currently has no separating comma ($62637). Is it possible to add a separating comma (so it becomes $62,637) while keeping the convert template ({{To USD|48857|GBR|2017|round=yes}})? I tried adding a comma between '48' and '857' in the template (as you can see from the page history) but it says Expression error: Unrecognized punctuation character ",". If this research has been reported in reliable sources (WP:RS), then it may be used to support statements you add to existing articles. A university research project that has not been so reported is not considered a reliable source. The subject does not warrant a separate article unless it it "notable" by our definition (WP:N). Otherwise your research is WP:OR, and does not belong in Wikipedia. If you wish to add material after reading these guidelines, then come back here. Please consider using your expertise to improve existing articles based on reliable sources: we could use the help. Devil/devil[edit]

Hi, an editor has been going through articles on Christianity and Satan and changing Devil to devil wherever it is capitalized. MOS:ISMCAPS is unclear if it should be capitalized. "Proper names and titles referencing deities are capitalized," but the Devil is not a deity (at least in Christianity). "Do not capitalize terms denoting types of religious or mythical beings, such as angel, fairy or deva." My sense is that Devil should be capitalized when referring to Satan, and lowercase when referring to devils in general, but I would like to confirm before I go ahead and revert the edits. - thanks - Epinoia (talk) 19:03, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Epinoia: I have no opinion on the capitalization, but as a process matter I think you should discuss this with the other editor in a location that has a bunch of interested parties. Perhaps the talk page of Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion? -Arch dude (talk) 22:08, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As a general rule (eg per the Oxford Manual of Style) it would be "a devil" (ordinary devil) but "the Devil" (Satan).--Shantavira|^{feed me} 16:21, 9 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Epinoia: Reading through MOS:ISMCAPS, my take is that it depends on whether the reference is the name of an individual religious entity, or a generic name to describe a class of such entitities. So "the Devil" if it refers to one specific entity, or "a devil" if it is one of many. Whether or not the Devil counts as a god is a question beyond my purview, but capitalization also applies to "important religious figures". I would suggest first contacting the editor in question and asking them to hold off until the matter can be discussed and a consistent approach agreed. Then I agree that WikiProject Religion is probably the best place to get the conversation going.--Gronk Oz (talk) 14:41, 10 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, can images taken by the United Nations be used on Wikipedia? On their guidelines page, https://www.unmultimedia.org/photo/guidelines.jsp, they state: "Written permission is, however, not required for reproduction of photo material as allowed by statutory exemptions (e.g. UN-affiliated non-governmental organizations and United Nations Associations, UN system organizations, including Specialized Agencies) or Fair Use.
