English Version of an article[edit]

Hi Team,

I am a big fan of the band Club des Belugas but I can only seem the find the German article de:Club des Belugas.

I cannot seem to find the English version. Is it me or is that it actually doesn't exist? I see that in this article the band is mentioned but there's no link to the English article Saint-Germain-des-Prés Café.

Also, if the article does not indeed exist in English I will go ahead and write it. To do so, can we just "clone" the German version onto English or we have to write it from scratch?

Thanks, RogerPubill (talk) 06:12, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@RogerPubil: You can translate the German version into English, you can also write it completely anew. You should use Wikipedia:Article wizard to start the new article. –Ammarpad (talk) 08:29, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Advice on translation is at WP:Translation. Note that the German article has no citations, so wouldn't be acceptable here at enwiki. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:34, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Page needing discussion by experienced editors and admins[edit]

The page Apex (gang) is a contentious subject and is always going to be liable to attract editors pushing differing views. Someone has, I believe, just re-added a lot of old material that was removed a while ago. In any case it has a much longer entry than it warrants in Wikipedia, given the differing opinions cited by police as to whether it qualifies as a "gang" and whether it actually existed as a coherent whole or was just named thus after a loosely-connected group of young offenders connected on social media and only existed for a brief moment in time in 2016. It's been a bone of contention and attracted a lot of attention on tabloid media and "shock jock" radio show hosts, and used as a recruitment tool for far-right extremists, amongst other things. At this point I am just asking for some input as to how to go about admins keeping on top of changes, and trying to re-establish a NPOV and also stop it growing out of proportion to its notability, etc. (This discussion also belongs on the Talk page there, I realise, but I would like to attract a few experienced editors to it first!) Laterthanyouthink (talk) 06:27, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again Laterthanyouthink. Knowing nothing of Australian gangs (or absence thereof) I nevertheless thought your question merited some acknowledgement before the day is quite over. The banner on the article's talk page links to a couple of WikiProjects which may attract the attention of editors with insight into the issue. It also carries a link to the National Library of Australia which may be willing to help with verifying and updating citations. You mention admins, but admins don't act as arbiters in content disputes; they are ordinary mortals with a few extra tools – mainly block, delete, protect or revdel. If page protection seems called for, requests go to this page. Other specifically administrative matters can be raised on the administrators' noticeboard. But I'd start by raising your concerns on the talk page and notify ("ping") the editors whose edits you have concerns about. Hope some of this helps: Bhunacat10 (talk), 23:32, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello : Bhunacat10 and thanks for your guidance, much appreciated. I will read and learn from those pages you've directed me to, and also review the Apex article and work out the best approach for this one. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:02, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The named reference Santosh was invoked but never defined — Preceding unsigned comment added by 106.197.240.127 (talk) 10:56, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

To which article are you referring? Your contribution log shows no previous edits from that IP address. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:59, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A search on "The named reference Santosh" shows Mr Santosh Kumar. It has much bigger problems. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:03, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How to make a official artist page on Wikipedia?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dorrra (talkcontribs) 16:34, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your user page is there for you to write a little about yourself and how you hope to contribute to Wikipedia. It should not be used for an article, but you can work on an article in your sandbox. Wikipedia does not have "official pages", but an article on an artist can be published if the artist has been written about in independent WP:Reliable sources. The article should summarise what these sources say. There is more advice at WP:Your first article and Wikipedia:Notability (people). Dbfirs 17:00, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Dorra. As Dbfirs says, there is no such thing as "an official page" for somebody - in fact there is no such thing as "a page for somebody" (though people do say that loosely sometimes). What we have is articles about people (and other subjects). If we have an article about an artist, it does not belong to that artist, the artist and their associates are discouraged from editing it directly, and it is a consensus of editors who decide what should go in the article, not the artist. --ColinFine (talk) 17:59, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Mass move (or edit, rather) pages (or templates, in this case) to a new subcategory?[edit]

Hey all, I usually find answers to my MOS, editing, or guideline-type questions using various Google booleans. I couldn't really find a fitting answer this time, so I figured I'd ask. In this case, take {{1866 shipwrecks}}, which together with all the other shipwreck templates—ranging from 1850 to the present—can be found in Category:Ship navigational boxes, taking up space and drowning (no pun) out the other ship navboxes.

I get that it technically isn't the wrong category for them to be in, but for the sake of categorization itself, perhaps it would be better to move these into a subcategory of their, e.g. [[Category:Shipwreck navigational boxes]] (not yet created). The way I see it, doing this manually would be quite a task, since the templates would need to be edited to swap cat:Ship navboxes for cat:Shipwreck navboxes. Quite a daunting task even with HotCat. (Or am I missing something?)

Is there a way to speed up this process using a script? Or can anyone point me to where I can put in a request to have a bot do this? I considered WP:CFD and WP:MOVE, but neither is really the right place to ask, since only one new category will have to be created (this I can do myself) and also because none of the templates actually need to be renamed. I have a feeling I'm not using the correct search terms and that I'm overlooking something here. I look forward to your answers. Thank you. Jay D. Easy (talk) 17:22, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jay D. Easy. Have you looked at AWB? I've never used it, so I may be wrong, but from the little I've seen, that is the sort of task it can help with. --ColinFine (talk) 17:44, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Jay D. Easy This would be pretty easy with AWB. Pull in the templates and alter the cat...Naraht (talk) 17:47, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine:, @Naraht: of course! I know of its existence but never actually used it myself either. I'll get right to it and try to get acquainted with it. Thank you, both. Jay D. Easy (talk) 18:37, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Image re-sizing[edit]

Greetz, Helpdeskers. Can you take a look at the lead image here, and suggest why I can't enlarge it? If you look at it in source-mode, you'll see I'm using the excessively massive |upright=3 parameter, but that illustrates my point; while it should be massive, the picture itself remains the same (small) size regardless of what parameter is chosen. Any advice gratefully received, as ever. Cheers! ——SerialNumber54129 17:53, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

the image itself is 225x155, meaning it can appear no larger than that. It is a non free image, so must be low res to be safe. if you want to, you can try asking Metropolitan Police for legal permission to use a full size image, but not much else. Good luck! Possible bulk replacement of broken link to relocated website[edit]

An enormous number of links on musical theatre articles point to pages once hosted on an American university site but since moved. I have been digging a few of the old, dead links out and updating them to point at the new site, but is there a more efficient means of going about this really rather gargantuan task? Expert guidance would be gratefully received. Tim riley talk 18:32, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Could you provide an example of the old vs new?WelpThatWorked (talk) (talk) 18:36, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Stupid of me! I thought to do so but then didn't. A recent example of a single replacement within an article is here. A lot of articles have two or more different links to the old site that need replacing with the new, but it is the change from http://math.boisestate.edu/gas to https://www.gsarchive.net that needs doing each time. Tim riley talk 18:57, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Special:LinkSearch shows 683 links to http://math.boisestate.edu/gas, mostly in articles. It can be requested at Wikipedia:Bot requests. Each such edit would only take seconds with the semiautomated Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser so you could also try Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Tasks, or consider using it yourself. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:27, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Tim riley: I've got the list queued up in AWB, just before I go ahead can you confirm that you would like all 683 instances of http://math.boisestate.edu/gas/example to be replaced with https://www.gsarchive.net/example? The only thing being kept is the original page name, not the /gas/ web server structure? Many thanks, SITH (talk) 19:57, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Good gracious! That's brilliant. Yes, please all the math.bois etc links to be https://www.gsarchive.net/example Bless you! Wow! Tim riley talk 20:09, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Tim riley no problem,  all done. I'll just put my last 700 contribs through the IABot interface so the Wayback Machine URLs are updated. Many thanks, SITH (talk) 20:54, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I say! I struggle to find the words to express my gratitude. Those of us who spend our time writing the prose for Wikipedia have cause to be truly grateful to those who make the prose work on the page. Thank you so much. Tim riley talk 21:48, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Tim riley, StraussInTheHouse: That replacement didn't work here at Jenny Lind. Were these replacements verified? -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 02:48, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Michael Bednarek: yep, it appears to have only been an error on this page, most likely due to the use of nonstandard capitalisation in the URL. Now working. SITH (talk) 16:16, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Finding articles in need of editing[edit]

Hello

I am new to Wikipedia. When I initially created an account, somewhere in the process, it suggested Wikipedia articles that were in need of editing, meaning there were significant flaws, copy errors, etc. I can no longer find this feature, where articles in need of editing are suggested to me. Can you tell me how to find/access articles that are in need of editing? Otherwise, it's been hard for me to find the more flawed articles by doing random browsing.

Thanks

BahnJour9120 (talk) 19:09, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Maintenance has a comprehensive list, but I recommend Wikipedia:Community portal/Opentask to just get a random task. WelpThatWorked (talk) (talk) 19:16, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot log on through TOR[edit]

I have Wikipedia:IP block exemption. Today I attempted to log on through the Tor browser and got this error:

There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Please resubmit the form.

Trying again gives the same error

Previously I could log on through TOR, and I can still log on normally through my ISP.

Has something changed?

Note: I have IP block exemption because I often am at a remote site in China where industrial espionage is a real problem (I do consulting work in the toy industry) and my employer requires that I access the Internet through Tails and Tor. There is a lot of waiting around at the remote site so I have plenty of time to edit Wikipedia. --Guy Macon (talk) 19:51, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Searching VPT for "precaution against session hijacking" returns many results. One of those discussions might have useful info. (Search.)--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:40, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I just spend nearly two hours reading every one of those threads and trying everything anyone suggested. Nothing worked. --Guy Macon (talk) 02:48, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. That sucks. Maybe post to WP:VPT yourself – I think a more targeted place to get the ear of many with tech expertise than here.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:47, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Done. See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Cannot log on through TOR --Guy Macon (talk) 16:04, 13 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

CSD/A9 Films[edit]

Hi,

I was wondering whether film articles that afoul of the functional equivalent to A9 "none of the contributing recording artists has an article and that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant" can also be tagged under it?

I wanted to check that wasn't something I could do before I checked out interest at VPI - it's not (easily) visible there in the backlogs, but if it was already a rule, it wouldn't be.

Cheers

Nosebagbear (talk) 21:30, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Nosebagbear. The CSD are generally strictly construed—if it's not within the plain ambit of the criterion, and it's not here (not a musical recording), it won't fly. As to discussing this, we usually hold such discussions at WT:CSD (rather than the village pump). I'm not saying you shouldn't raise it again there or at the pump, but this or similar has been discussed in the past. See as a sampling:
Also, by way of analogy,:
Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:32, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit-conflict): @Fuhghettaboutit: Ah, I was looking in the wrong place - and thanks for saving me the search. Just had a batch of non-hoaxes to review and fruitlessly hunt for some refs. Rather than flog the perennial I guess I'll start the next couple of AfDs. Nosebagbear (talk) 22:38, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Nosebagbear: Anytime. I personally would expand the CSD dramatically but pragmatism as to deletion is not given the preeminence it should have in my view to save time dealing with the raging firehose of crap we face out of newpages (that would then allow the diamond sorting we could be doing much better from its output).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:52, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Fuhghettaboutit: - interestingly I'm actually an inclusionist, but it would be nice if the CSDs were in sync. Nosebagbear (talk) 22:57, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
