June 18[edit]

Plesase remove the ugly numbers that are all over the photos/files in eth "family" section of this page. I have tried and failed. Thanks 175.32.82.245 (talk) 00:29, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Done. The problem is when a left-aligned image encounters a bulleted or numbered list - it's often pretty ugly. I just moved the image to the right. Schazjmd Talk 00:43, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Claiming inactive account names[edit]

Helped
Sorry to bother you guys/girls, but is it possible to take control of an account that hasn't been used for over 13 years, and has no edits? For example, I would like to use the name BobRoberts, but the name was taken by an editor who hasn't made any edits for and made their account 13 years ago. Bill Williams (talk) 01:57, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @LilBillWilliams: You're not a bother. I'm glad you asked the question. Since the requested account's home is the English Wikipedia (here), they've been inactive since 2013, and they've had zero contributions: [1], the name change should process should be pretty smooth. Just follow the process here: WP:USURP. The instructions are right above the blue button (basically you'll click the blue button to start the request, enter BobRoberts in place of where you see TARGETNAME, and enter a reason in place of where you see YOUR REASON, then click the publish changes button). You can return to WP:USURP to see the status of the request. Good luck and happy editing! Orville1974 (talk) 04:39, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. Bill Williams (talk) 11:29, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again @LilBillWilliams:, I see you found the right place and got the process started. Good luck and happy editing! Orville1974 (talk) 22:43, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Split Bangkok Article[edit]

I felt that the following paragraph (its one footnote removed), from the article on Bangkok, should be split. Could anyone please provide me with suggestions as to where? I think the sentence starting with "[f]ollowing" would be best. (I split it there at first, then undid the edit and decided to get feedback here first - twice, because of an accidental edit. Sorry about that, and this long-winded explanation.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 03:59, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Thylacine24: - (sorry to edit directly, think it looked simpler) - you are definitely right it should be split at that point. But it could just as well be split into 3 paragraphs, and like in many histories, WW2 makes a good breakpoint.
"Bangkok's economy gradually expanded through international trade, first with China, then with Western merchants returning in the early to-mid 19th century. As the capital, Bangkok was the centre of Siam's modernization as it faced pressure from Western powers in the late-19th century. The reigns of Kings Mongkut (Rama IV, 1851–68) and Chulalongkorn (Rama V, 1868–1910) saw the introduction of the steam engine, printing press, rail transport and utilities infrastructure in the city, as well as formal education and healthcare. Bangkok became the centre stage for power struggles between the military and political elite as the country abolished absolute monarchy in 1932.
Allied with Japan in World War II, it was subjected to Allied bombing, but rapidly grew in the post-war period as a result of US aid and government-sponsored investment. Bangkok's role as a US military R&R destination boosted its tourism industry as well as firmly establishing it as a sex tourism destination. Disproportionate urban development led to increasing income inequalities and migration from rural areas into Bangkok; its population surged from 1.8 million to 3 million in the 1960s.
Following the US withdrawal from Vietnam in 1973, Japanese businesses took over as leaders in investment, and the expansion of export-oriented manufacturing led to growth of the financial market in Bangkok. Rapid growth of the city continued through the 1980s and early 1990s, until it was stalled by the 1997 Asian financial crisis. By then, many public and social issues had emerged, among them the strain on infrastructure reflected in the city's notorious traffic jams. Bangkok's role as the nation's political stage continues to be seen in strings of popular protests, from the student uprisings in 1973 and 1976, anti-military demonstrations in 1992, and successive anti-government demonstrations by opposing groups from 2008 on."

Template error[edit]

Hi,

I added the number of seats held to this article: Long Live Tunisia in the infobox and I get this error:

<div style="background-color: #A91101; width: Expression error: Unexpected < operator%; height: 100%;">

How can I fix it? Thanks! David O. Johnson (talk) 04:55, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed @David O. Johnson: Hi! I was looking at Template:Infobox Tunisian political party that's used on that page and it looks like for the seat parameter it says "The current number of seats the party holds in the Assembly of Representatives. Write the number only." So for this particular template we don't need to use the Composition bar template. OkayKenG (talk) 05:34, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

To restore information[edit]

Helped
Respected editors, one major problem has arrived. In Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil wikipedia a major part of information has been removed by an editor from Early life paragraph. Please! restore those information. Thanks. (223.230.133.231 (talk) 06:08, 18 June 2019 (UTC))[reply]

I have left you a message on my talk page as a reply to your message that you sent earlier today. Regards, Willbb234 (talk) 06:24, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Content was removed with this edit by Orville1974 as it was both minor and unsourced. Eagleash (talk) 07:40, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Translating wikipedia[edit]

I am trying to translate articles from english pages to the malayalam page. How can I identify the articles that need translation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Byjuvtvm (talkcontribs) 07:52, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Byjuvtvm: there was about 58,000 pages on the Malayalam Wikipedia as of August 2018 compared to nearly 6 million on the English Wikipedia. This means that the vast majority of articles you find haven’t been translated, but you can check by searching the Malayam Wikipedia before translating. Willbb234 (talk) 09:25, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Byjuvtvm:You can take a look at content translation on Malayam Wikipedia. There is a suggestion tab that recommends some artcles for translation. --94rain Talk 09:19, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Verified Editors Issue[edit]

Helped
Hello!

Please allow me to present myself. I am the Digital Director working in a reputable advertising agency in Lebanon. We have created a Wikipedia account to one of our clients AM Bank and reached the publication phase. Since we are still not verified editors, we couldn't publish the content online, although all is ready and approved by the client.

Can you please advise, on how we can proceed? The client is following-up continuously and we need to get back to them on this matter.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Reva Berbari — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.110.101.90 (talk) 11:14, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Before wasting any more of your, or your client's, time you need to read WP:PAID, WP:COI and WP:NOTE. Then ask yourself if your client is notable (in Wiki's terms) and are there third party references for all facts. Finally, it doesn't matter a jot whether the article has been approved by your client, once published it may be edited by anyone. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 11:19, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
One other thing: (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Martin of Sheffield (talk) 11:21, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! After following Martin of Sheffield's advice regarding the steps you'll need to take regarding disclosing your paid contributor status and conflict of interest, if this is the same bank as AmBank, there is already an article published on Wikipedia. The links provided above will guide you on how to request changes (with reliable third-party sources WP:RS) on the talk page of the article: Talk:AmBank. Orville1974
Nevermind, that appears to be a different bank group based in Malaysia. (talk) 11:28, 18 June 2019 (UTC). Updated. Orville1974 (talk) 11:32, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Note: apparently the article in question is Draft:AM Bank SAL. ‡ Єl Cid of ᐺalencia ᐐT₳LKᐬ 14:48, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@El cid, el campeador: Thanks for the link. Reva Berbari, as it stands the article has no chance of making it to main space. There are no independent reference other than the government list of banks, the bank's own web and facebook pages are not independent. It also reads like a promotional page, not a neutral assessment of the bank. WP is not social media, it summarises what third parties have said about the subject of the page. Eldorado poem by Edgar Allen Poe[edit]

Just wanted you to know (I don't know how to add this to the comment section of the poem) that the last part of the poem the paragraph "Over the mountain(s) of the Moon" was featured in an Airwolf episode Season 3, "Airwolf 2" as the location for Kaitlyn (Delrado's Canyon), Hawke and ArchAngel discover the note left behind after she was taken from Santini Air. Hawke begins with "Over the mountain of the moon, down in the valley of the shadow", and ArchAngel finishes "Ride, boldly ride,’ The shade replied,‘If you seek for Eldorado!" Hawke then says "Delrado's canyon". Hawke then contacts Dominic in the Airwolf's lair, tells him they've taken Kate and asks him if he knows where the canyon is, Dominic says "sure" and Hawke tells him "..meet me there and bring the lady" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brubik5575 (talkcontribs) 14:08, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Willbb234 (talk) 15:17, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Willbb234: I think it's unlikely that Brubik5575 thinks we are affiliated with Edgar Allan Poe, who died in 1849. I think it's much more likely that they are proposing an addition to the article Eldorado (poem).
@Brubik5575: Wikipedia articles don't have comment sections, but this is the encyclopaedia that anyone can edit, and you are encouraged to be bold and add the material yourself. You should know, however, that information added to Wikipedia articles is required to be cited to a reliable source. You may also wish to read our guidelines on Citing sources and Identifying reliable sources. I think it's unlikely that such a source could be found to support the material you're proposing, though I'd be happy to be proven wrong. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 15:53, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Arms & Hearts: I was using the generic template {{Astray}} for confusing questions. Regards, Willbb234 (talk) 18:03, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Willbb234, we can see that. And the template you chose was not appropriate to the OP's question. Maproom (talk) 06:31, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Inability to edit one specific article - how comes? How to return to editing?[edit]

By missunderstanding my GIF was deleted from article "Headphones". Now the GIF is restored in Commons (property rights for the image confirmed), but I cannot restore it in the article because this particular article has no "Edit source" tag for me - instead I see "View source". For other articles the editing option is still available. What needs to be done to return to editing of the article and restoring the information deleted by mistake? Thank you in advance for explanation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WearablesLover (talkcontribs) 14:15, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been semi-protected, as can be seen from the padlock in the top right hand corner of the article. This prevents IP addresses and non-confirmed accounts from editing and making changes to it. Alternatively, you could post an edit request on the Talk:Headphones talk page which has not been protected. Chaheel Riens (talk) 14:33, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Boaty McBoatface - references within notes[edit]

The naming section of Boaty McBoatface contains the sentence "These incidents suggest there is still a clear deficit in understanding how to engage crowds and avoid failures and demonstrate the backlash from NERC’s neglecting the crowd’s choice, which resulted in a sophisticated reaction in other campaigns" - which is backed up by a reference note. However, the reference note itself contains references. Is this an acceptable way of doing things? It seems a bit clunky to me - that a reader would have to follow a ref to find a sentence which is backed up itself by refs? Chaheel Riens (talk) 14:37, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Notes add information, that information needs to be cited and so it is normal to use references within notes. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 15:22, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
But having "Notes" and "Citations" as subsections of a section called "References" is questionable. Maproom (talk) 06:35, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect detail about Antoni Gaudí[edit]

The page for Hotel Attraction – almost certainly incorrectly – states that Gaudí was a communist. I brought this up on the talk page of that article last April, which no one has replied to yet:

That doesn't seem right, what with Gaudí's devout Catholic beliefs, and the main Wikipedia page makes no reference to Gaudí being a Communist. I know the link in the footnote says he was, but it seems to be one of only a few sources that make mention of Gaudí as a communist, all of which concern the Hotel Attraction. This leads me to believe that what I think is the original source for this, a page from the blacklisted website Untapped Cities, fabricated it, intentionally or unintentionally.

Could anyone please help me on this? Sorry that I haven't been using block quotes on my other quotes here. (Edit: Also sorry to keep editing the title of this post, among other things; I have OCD.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 17:29, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Done I'm no expert on the subject, but I don't see this corroborated anywhere but one or two generic website of dubious reliability. GMGtalk 18:29, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks.--Thylacine24 (talk) 19:37, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Mind you, Gaudí did seem to have a humble leisure life of dressing like a beggar (which, notably, indirectly led to his death) and was involved in the design of the College of the Teresians, a building for a Carmelite community that took a vow of poverty, so it's possible that the intention of the project, to serve upper-class hotel patrons, could have offended him, but this is all guesswork on my part.--Thylacine24 (talk) 20:05, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

About talkpage[edit]

Is it possible to ping or notify the editors of an article for a discussion in talkpage? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arnabsaha2212 (talkcontribs) 19:05, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Arnabsaha2212: Yes. You can do {{ReplyTo|USER}} replacing USER with the editor's username. RudolfRed (talk) 19:25, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
forgot to mention: see {{ReplyTo}} for more info on this. RudolfRed (talk) 19:25, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
One may also prefer {{u}} or even {{bcc}} over the "@username:" formatting. Eman235/talk 19:52, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A requirement that is often overlooked, is that you must add the ping and your signature in the same edit, or it will not work - Arjayay (talk) 09:29, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Help tying up EnWiki, Wikisource, and Wikidata[edit]

We have an article C. H. Bovill. That author is on Wikisource as Charles Harry Bovill, and on Wikidata as both Charles Harry Bovill and C. H. Bovill. These articles do not link up to each other properly. How do I sort this out? Thanks, DuncanHill (talk) 19:11, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

One of the entries in Wikidata should be deleted. Ruslik_Zero 20:03, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That would leave broken links between projects. DuncanHill (talk) 20:09, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
wikidata:Help:Merge will probably help. Eman235/talk 20:19, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant, thank you Eman235. It appears I have now successfully merged them and the different project pages link to each other. DuncanHill (talk) 20:25, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Special:Nearby for arbitrary locations?[edit]

Special:Nearby usefully gives a list of nearby articles sorted by distance from my current location. But I would like a tool that allows me to enter a latitude and longitude and get a list of articles close to that location. This was apparently requested several years ago (see phabricator:T51413), but I can't figure out if it was implemented or how to use it. See also Wikipedia:Nearby. Any help would be appreciated. —Granger (talk · contribs) 22:53, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Mx. Granger: If you download the free Wikipedia app on a mobile device, there is a map which allows you to locate anywhere in the world and search for articles located in that area. I did a search on the app store by typing ‘Wikipedia’ and it is the first result. I hope that helps, Willbb234 (talk) 06:12, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Adding to Willbb234's comment, Under Wikipedia:WikiProject Geographical coordinates in one of the sections here, it gives a link to copernix.io which is like an online version of the same feature. OkayKenG (talk) 06:29, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I was hoping for a list format, but that is somewhat helpful. In the meantime I've figured out that the Firefox extension Location Guard allows me to use a fake location, which is inconvenient but gives me the desired functionality. —Granger (talk · contribs) 11:35, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
