Question about titles[edit]

Hi there. If we have a geographical place that has a current name and a former name. If the former name is more commonly used (more commonly found in the internet) than the current name, which name we choose for the title of the article? The former name or the current name of the place? Thanks in advance.--SharʿabSalam▼ (talk) 01:26, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Follow the most up-to-date, modern, authoritative sources. It may depend on how long the new name has been in place for; if the change is very recent, consider waiting to see whether the new name becomes more common in reliable sources' usage. See the guideline on former/modern place names and the rest of the naming conventions for places. – Teratix 03:28, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Placeholder "no image available. Add one?" template when a list row lacks an available image[edit]

I think I remember from long ago some sort of template you could insert as a placeholder when no image is currently available. Might have been an image, I can't remember. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, or if it even actually existed. It would go where it currently says "NEEDS IMAGE" for Chimney Rock Wilderness here. Any ideas? — Preceding unsigned comment added by CJK09 (talkcontribs) 05:16, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@CJK09: Those were discontinued years ago. You can read about them at Wikipedia:Image placeholders, and the 2008 discussion is at Wikipedia:Centralized discussion/Image placeholders. I think the current view is that rows with no image should just leave the image column blank; there's an example at Landmark Trust. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:03, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Page Rename & Logo Upload[edit]

Hello!

I would like to change the page name for my organisation and upload its new logo, but it seems I need some sort of authorisation to do so. What kind? Thank you.

GreenfieldIntS (talk) 07:32, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

GreenfieldIntS Hello. You will need to change your username immediately, as per the username policy usernames cannot be that of an organization; your username must reflect that a specific individual is exclusively operating your account(your real name is not required). A name formatted at "Username of GreenfieldIS" would be acceptable. Please visit Special:GlobalRenameRequest or WP:CHUS to make a username change request.
In terms of editing, you should not edit the article about your school directly, but you make make a formal edit request(click for instructions) on the article talk page (Talk:Greenfield Community School). You can request that the article be retitled at Requested Moves. Lastly, please read about conflict of interest and paid editing as you have some required disclosures to make. Thank you. 331dot (talk) 07:41, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The article name and logo are the least of your worries at the moment. None of the references (the ones that work) establish the notability of the school. The page is in dire need of good quality reliable references. Help:Referencing for beginners is a good place to start, in order to understand what is required. - X201 (talk) 07:45, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I cleaned up and moved the article and added the logo, but it's still woefully lacking in sources. The only one I could find with a quick search is this [[1]], which at least confirms that it exists and that the new name is right. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 19:41, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cancel registration[edit]

How can I cancel my registration from Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rcortelletti (talkcontribs) 08:25, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Rcortelletti There is no way to "cancel" or delete your account; if you no longer wish to participate here, just abandon your account. A courtesy vanishing may be an option for you as well. 331dot (talk) 08:33, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Factual content[edit]

The wiki page of my father Giorgio Chinaglia has been locked by an unknown entity with false information that I’ve corrected several times. I would like to know how to remedy this situation as it is imperative that the page be accurate. Thank you in advance, Giorgio Chinaglia Jr. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GChinagliaJr (talkcontribs) 11:36, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you've commented at Talk:Giorgio Chinaglia, but you need to support your proposed changes with references to published independent reliable sources to satisfy the requirement for verifiability. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:51, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Fort Macleod Google Heading[edit]

Good day.

When you search for the town "Fort Macleod" in google, the wikipedia page comes up, but the heading is "Fort MacLeod", which is incorrect. Once you click on the article and go to the wikipedia page the spelling is correct. Is there a way to correct how it shows up when you enter it in google? Or is this a problem for google?

Thanks for the help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.71.245.198 (talk) 15:13, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. As you say, the Wikipedia article is correctly titled Fort Macleod, but Fort MacLeod also exists as a Wikipedia redirect, in case anybody types that in in error. Wikipedia has no control over what Google does with the information. --ColinFine (talk) 15:16, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's inaccurate to say "the wikipedia page comes up". You refer to the box at the top right but it's made by Google and all other fields than the paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" can be from sources unrelated to Wikipedia. This includes the heading. See also Template:HD/GKG. I don't think the Wikipedia redirect caused the capitalization. Google Maps at the top of the box also says "Fort MacLeod". The Wikipedia page does "come up" in the search page but not in the box. It's in the search results to the left and correctly names the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:39, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

how can i make my profile on wikidiedia[edit]

Please how can i make my profile on wikipedia , processes — Preceding unsigned comment added by Epheamsmems (talkcontribs) 16:24, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Epheamsmems There is not a single "profile" on Wikipedia. Wikipedia has articles . Those articles summarize what independent reliable sources say about article subjects, not what the subject wants to say about themselves. In order to merit an article on Wikipedia, you must demonstrate that you meet Wikipedia's special definition of a notable person. If you do, you should not be the one to write an article about you, per the autobiography policy. If you just want to tell the world about yourself, please use social media. 331dot (talk) 16:55, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Opening pages in new tab[edit]

hi. how is it i cant find an option to open pages inside wiki in another tab? i mean i press a link in a wiki page but it opens in the same window. i would love to change this by default. THANKS — Preceding unsigned comment added by JKim (talkcontribs) 19:19, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

JKim That's something you would have to set your browser to do on your end; by your use of the word "press" I assume you are using a tablet- on my tablet if I hold the link for a few seconds the option comes up to open the link in another tab. 331dot (talk) 19:30, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, if you use a desktop, some browsers have a keyboard shortcut, such as holding shift when clicking a link to open in a new tab. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 22:27, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

thanks. i asumed wiki has his own tab link rules, but it has not. google.com ie has an option for that . it works in google pages only and it is great. i am using an ipad so i think i cant do this BY DEFAULT. thanks anyway --JKim (talk) 03:06, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

JKim Hi, I found this tip: "To open that Safari link in a new tab, just tap on it with two fingers at once (as noted by a recent post on r/Apple). By default, Safari will bring you to that new tab, but if you’d rather load it in the background that’s an option, too. Just head into Settings, then Safari, then Open Links, and choose to open new links in the background." I use Firefox on a PC, so can't help much further. Thats really cool. Thanks ♦--JKim (talk) 19:41, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error ref no input[edit]

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Arefa sultana (talkcontribs) 19:26, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In the error message the words "help page" are in blue, indicating that they are a wikilink, in this case to Help:Cite errors/Cite error ref no input. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:31, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Arefa sultana, this is quite easy to do. There is a button to add ref tags, but if you accidentally press this then don't notice, it leaves empty ref tags on the page. To fix it, look for <ref></ref> on the page, then remove it. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 20:01, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
