article submission

Using an example from a paper/textbook or thesis

Hello, I wanted to use a numerical example I found in a thesis (about calculating a quantity called GBE). What is the best way of citing a source in situations like this that I want to use their calculation in an article? For example, here, it is said Consider an example adopted from John Bitzan’s Transportation Economics Notes, Let X be a binary variable that is equal to 1.... Can I just use a similar language and cite the source? Is that enough according to Wikipedia policies and guidelines? Thank you for your help. Pirehelo (talk) 03:22, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

@Pirehelokan: I haven't done writing in this field, but the first thing that strikes me is that enwiki is not supposed to write using the "we" and "consider" prevalent in math texts (see WP:TONE in general and MOS:MATH#TONE more specifically). Then what about this text in the article homeomorphism?

The third requirement, that ${\textstyle f^{-1}}$ be continuous, is essential. Consider for instance the function ${\textstyle f:[0,2\pi )\to S^{1}}$ (the unit circle in ${\textstyle \mathbb {R} ^{2}}$) defined by${\textstyle f(\phi )=(\cos \phi ,\sin \phi )}$. This function is bijective and continuous, but not a homeomorphism (${\textstyle S^{1}}$ is compact but ${\textstyle [0,2\pi )}$ is not). The function ${\textstyle f^{-1}}$ is not continuous at the point ${\textstyle (1,0)}$, because although ${\textstyle f^{-1}}$ maps ${\textstyle (1,0)}$ to ${\textstyle 0}$, any neighbourhood of this point also includes points that the function maps close to ${\textstyle 2\pi }$, but the points it maps to numbers in between lie outside the neighbourhood.

It contains the word "consider". How should it be written in the correct tone?

And on a related note, although you don't necessarily see it here, on my screen the article text splits "${\textstyle 2\pi }$" and "," on separate lines, causing what appears to be a typography error. How can they be forced to be on the same line? JIP | Talk 20:31, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

@Pirehelokan: If the article is about the math, and not really about how that person contributed to it, the cite should be enough. If his contribution were key to the result, it might be worth mentioning him in the prose.

@JIP: I try to start formulas on a new line so they have as much room as possible. I'll note that the formula above does not break for me – the whole thing appears on one line or the next (Win10/Firefox). You could try wrapping it in {{Nowrap|<math> ... </math>}} like this: ${\textstyle f:[0,2\pi )\to S^{1}}$

Ayurveda (2)

Sir, I want to request you to modify introduction part of Wikipedia Ayurveda page. In this page it is mentioned Ayurveda as pseudoscientific, protoscience and quackery. Which is not true. Ayurveda is origin of medicine and surgery and base on scientific theory. The content is sourced. Wikipedia relies on what the sources state. @331dot: they seem to have run into an abusefilter on commons. The main question is a) is CoBeZa allowed to license the logo of this company under a CC license; b) if he can, is this truely what he wants (CC-BY-SA 4.0 is very free anc c) can it be tagged as {{own}}. If it cannot, OTRS permission is probbably required. (Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer and cannot give legal advice. If you have questions about copyright law, ask a lawyer of your trust.) Hello, CoBeZa. Unless you want anybody to be able to reuse or alter your logo for any purpose, I don't think you want to release it under a free licence. Logos are often uploaded to Wikipedia itself as non-free images - see logos. Because of your Conflict of interest you should make an edit request on the talk page of the article about your company (which is not your page, by the way), giving a link to where the new logo can be found. But you must first make the mandatory declaration of yourself as a paid editor. --ColinFine (talk) 11:17, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Deleted BLP and copyright

My first BLP article was deleted due to copyright from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_E._Letendre

The Unviersity of Iowa owns the copyright for this content and I am publishing on behalf of the University of Iowa. Also, Delabra, even if you can sort out the copyright issue, it is very unlikely that material belonging to the University is appropriate for a Wikipedia article. Wikipedia has basically no interest in anything that the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or that their associates, employers, or institutions say about them. It is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and have not been prompted or provided information by the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject. Furthermore, material published by the university is unlikely to meet Wikipedia's requirements of neutrality. --ColinFine (talk) 23:16, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Dr Linda Campbell

Dr. Campbell is the Director of the Environment at St Mary's University in Halifax, NS. Along with being Senior Fellow she is deaf and has served on many boards for the environment and representing the deaf. She is a trustee at St Mary's university but on the Board of Trustees of Gallaudet in Washington D.C. She has served on the Canadian Hearing Society's Provincial Board and was Chair of the Governance Committee and was on 2014-2015 Chief Executive search committee. She was the 2009-20 President of the International Great Lakes Research. Her research is focused on containments and sustainability of the water supply. Before arriving at St. Mary's she was a Tier II Canadian Research Chair at Quenn's University Kingston Ontario.
